Verse 1
tad adbhutatamaṃ vākyaṃ śrutvāgastyasya rāghavaḥ | gauravād vismayāc caiva bhūyaḥ praṣṭuṃ pracakrame
Having heard that most wondrous speech of Agastya, Rāghava, out of reverence and amazement, began to ask again:
Verse 2
bhagavaṃs tad vanaṃ ghoraṃ tapas tapyati yatra saḥ | śveto vaidarbhako rājā kathaṃ tad amṛgadvijam
"Revered one, that terrible forest where he practiced austerity — Śveta, the king of Vidarbha — how was it bereft of beasts and birds?
Verse 3
niḥsattvaṃ ca vanaṃ jātaṃ śūnyaṃ manujavarjitam | tapaś cartuṃ praviṣṭaḥ sa śrotum icchāmi tattvataḥ
And how did the forest become devoid of creatures, empty, bereft of men, that he entered it to practice austerity? I wish to hear the truth of it."
Verse 4
rāmasya bhāṣitaṃ śrutvā kautūhalasamanvitam | vākyaṃ paramatejasvī vaktum evopacakrame
Hearing Rāma's speech, filled with curiosity, the supremely radiant Agastya began to speak:
Verse 5
purā kṛtayuge rāma manur daṇḍadharaḥ prabhuḥ | tasya putro mahān āsīd ikṣvākuḥ kulavardhanaḥ
"Of old, in the Kṛta age, O Rāma, Manu was the lord, the wielder of the rod of justice; his son was the great Ikṣvāku, the increaser of the line.
Verse 6
taṃ putraṃ pūrvake rājye nikṣipya bhuvi durjayam | pṛthivyāṃ rājavaṃśānāṃ bhava kartety uvāca ha
Setting that invincible son upon the earth in the ancestral kingdom, he said: 'Be the founder of royal dynasties on the earth.'
Verse 7
tatheti ca pratijñātaṃ pituḥ putreṇa rāghava | tataḥ paramasaṃhṛṣṭo manuḥ punar uvāca ha
And 'So be it' was promised to the father by the son, O Rāghava; thereupon, exceedingly pleased, Manu spoke again:
Verse 8
prīto 'smi paramodārakartā cāsi na saṃśayaḥ | daṇḍena ca prajā rakṣa mā ca daṇḍam akāraṇe
'I am pleased, and you are a doer of most noble deeds, no doubt; protect the subjects with the rod of justice, but do not wield the rod without cause.
Verse 9
aparādhiṣu yo daṇḍaḥ pātyate mānaveṣu vai | sa daṇḍo vidhivan muktaḥ svargaṃ nayati pārthivam
The punishment that is inflicted upon offending men — that rod, applied according to rule, leads the king to heaven.
Verse 10
tasmād daṇḍe mahābāho yatnavān bhava putraka | dharmo hi paramo loke kurvatas te bhaviṣyati
Therefore, O mighty-armed one, be diligent in just punishment, my son; for the highest righteousness in the world shall come to you who act thus.'
Verse 11
iti taṃ bahu saṃdiśya manuḥ putraṃ samādhinā | jagāma tridivaṃ hṛṣṭo brahmalokam anuttamam
Having thus instructed his son at length with concentrated mind, Manu, delighted, went to heaven, to the unsurpassed world of Brahmā.
Verse 12
prayāte tridive tasminn ikṣvākur amitaprabhaḥ | janayiṣye kathaṃ putrān iti cintāparo 'bhavat
When he had departed to heaven, Ikṣvāku of boundless splendor became absorbed in the thought: 'How shall I beget sons?'
Verse 13
karmabhir bahurūpaiś ca tais tair manusutaḥ sutān | janayām āsa dharmātmā śataṃ devasutopamān
By rites of many and various kinds, the righteous son of Manu begot a hundred sons, like the sons of the gods.
Verse 14
teṣām avarajas tāta sarveṣāṃ raghunandana | mūḍhaś cākṛtividyaś ca na śuśrūṣati pūrvajān
The youngest of them all, O dear one, O delight of the Raghus, was dull and untutored, and would not serve his elders.
Verse 15
nāma tasya ca daṇḍeti pitā cakre 'lpatejasaḥ | avaśyaṃ daṇḍapatanaṃ śarīre 'sya bhaviṣyati
And his father gave that one of little splendor the name Daṇḍa (the Rod), [thinking] 'Inevitably the falling of the rod will come upon his body.'
Verse 16
sa paśyamānas taṃ doṣaṃ ghoraṃ putrasya rāghava | vindhyaśaivalayor madhye rājyaṃ prādād ariṃdama
Seeing that dread fault in his son, O Rāghava, his father gave him a kingdom in the region between the Vindhya and the Śaivala mountains, O subduer of foes.
Verse 17
sa daṇḍas tatra rājābhūd ramye parvatarodhasi | puraṃ cāpratimaṃ rāma nyaveśayad anuttamam
There Daṇḍa became king, on the lovely slope of the mountains; and he founded there, O Rāma, a peerless and unsurpassed city.
Verse 18
purasya cākaron nāma madhumantam iti prabho | purohitaṃ cośanasaṃ varayām āsa suvratam
And he made the city's name Madhumanta, O lord; and he chose as his house-priest the virtuous Uśanas (Śukra).
Verse 19
evaṃ sa rājā tad rājyaṃ kārayat sapurohitaḥ | prahṛṣṭamanujākīrṇaṃ devarājyaṃ yathā divi
Thus that king, with his house-priest, governed that kingdom, thronged with gladdened folk, like the kingdom of the gods in heaven."
