Now, when night had set in, Śatrughna questioned the brahmin Cyavana, the delight of Bhṛgu's line, about the strength and weakness of Lavaṇa.

śūlasya ca balaṃ brahman ke ca pūrvaṃ nipātitāḥ | anena śūlamukhena dvandvayuddham upāgatāḥ
"And the power of the trident (śūla), O brahmin — who were they that formerly, coming to single combat, were struck down by the point of this trident?"

Hearing those words of the great-souled Śatrughna, the mightily radiant Cyavana answered the delight of the Raghus.

"Innumerable are his deeds, O bull among men. Hear from me what once befell a king born in the lineage of Ikṣvāku.
Verse 5
ayodhyāyāṃ purā rājā yuvanāśvasuto balī | māndhatā iti vikhyātas triṣu lokeṣu vīryavān
Long ago in Ayodhyā there was a mighty king, the son of Yuvanāśva, renowned as Māndhātā, valiant throughout the three worlds.
Verse 6
sa kṛtvā pṛthivīṃ kṛtsnāṃ śāsane pṛthivīpatiḥ | suralokam atho jetum udyogam akaron nṛpaḥ
That lord of the earth, having brought the whole earth under his sway, then set about an effort, the king, to conquer the world of the gods.
Verse 7
indrasya tu bhayaṃ tīvraṃ surāṇāṃ ca mahātmanām | māndhātari kṛtodyoge devalokajigīṣayā
Keen was the fear in Indra and in the great-souled gods when Māndhātā made his effort out of the wish to conquer the realm of the gods.

ardhāsanena śakrasya rājyārdhena ca pārthivaḥ | vandyamānaḥ suragaṇaiḥ pratijñām adhyarohata
Though honored by the hosts of gods with the offer of half of Śakra's seat and half his kingdom, the king held firm to his resolve.
Verse 9

Knowing his sinful intent, the Chastiser of Pāka (Indra) spoke these words, prefaced with conciliation, to the son of Yuvanāśva:
Verse 10
rājā tvaṃ mānuṣaṃ loke na tāvat puruṣarṣabha | akṛtvā pṛthivīṃ vaśyāṃ devarājyam ihecchasi
"You are but a king in the world of men, O bull among men; not having yet made the whole earth subject to you, you already covet the kingdom of the gods here.
Verse 11
yadi vīra samagrā te medinī nikhilā vaśe | devarājyaṃ kuruṣveha sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ
If, O hero, the entire earth in its whole extent is under your sway, then exercise the kingship of the gods here, with your servants, your forces, and your mounts."
Verse 12
indram evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ tu māndhātā vākyam abravīt | kva me śakrapratihataṃ śāsanaṃ pṛthivītale
To Indra speaking thus, Māndhātā made reply: "Where upon the face of the earth is my command anywhere thwarted?"
Verse 13
tam uvāca sahasrākṣo lavaṇo nāma rākṣasaḥ | madhuputro madhuvane nājñāṃ te kurute 'nagha
To him the Thousand-eyed (Indra) said: "There is a rākṣasa named Lavaṇa, the son of Madhu, in the Madhu forest, who does not carry out your command, O sinless one."
Verse 14

Hearing that harsh and terrible speech uttered by the Thousand-eyed, the king, abashed and with downcast face, was unable to say a word.
Verse 15
āmantrya tu sahasrākṣaṃ hriyā kiṃ cid avāṅmukhaḥ | punar evāgamac chrīmān imaṃ lokaṃ nareśvaraḥ
Taking leave of the Thousand-eyed, his face somewhat lowered in shame, the illustrious lord of men came back once more to this world.
Verse 16
sa kṛtvā hṛdaye 'marṣaṃ sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ | ājagāma madhoḥ putraṃ vaśe kartum aninditaḥ
Harboring indignation in his heart, with his servants, forces, and mounts, the blameless one marched against the son of Madhu to bring him under his sway.

That bull among men, longing to engage Lavaṇa in battle, sent a messenger to the presence of Lavaṇa.
Verse 18
sa gatvā vipriyāṇy āha bahūni madhunaḥ sutam | vadantam evaṃ taṃ dūtaṃ bhakṣayām āsa rākṣasaḥ
Having gone, the messenger spoke many offensive words to the son of Madhu; and as the messenger spoke thus, the rākṣasa devoured him.
Verse 19
cirāyamāṇe dūte tu rājā krodhasamanvitaḥ | ardayām āsa tad rakṣaḥ śaravṛṣṭyā samantataḥ
When the messenger delayed and did not return, the king, filled with wrath, assailed that rākṣasa on every side with a rain of arrows.
Verse 20

Then Lavaṇa, with a laugh, took the trident in his hand and loosed that supreme weapon to slay the king together with his retinue.

tac chūlaṃ dīpyamānaṃ tu sabhṛtyabalavāhanam | bhasmīkṛtya nṛpaṃ bhūyo lavaṇasyāgamat karam
That blazing trident, having reduced the king together with his servants, forces, and mounts to ashes, returned once more to Lavaṇa's hand.
Verse 22
evaṃ sa rājā sumahān hataḥ sabalavāhanaḥ | śūlasya ca balaṃ vīra aprameyam anuttamam
Thus was that mighty king slain, together with his army and mounts. And the power of that trident, O hero, is beyond measure and unsurpassed.

But tomorrow at dawn you shall slay Lavaṇa — of that there is no doubt — swiftly, while his weapon is not in his hand; for your victory is assured."
