Verse 1
rāvaṇagrahaṇaṃ tat tu vāyugrahaṇasaṃnibham | ṛṣiḥ pulastyaḥ śuśrāva kathitaṃ divi daivataiḥ
But that capture of Rāvaṇa, like the capturing of the very wind, the sage Pulastya heard of, as it was told in heaven by the gods.
Verse 2
tataḥ putrasutasnehāt kampyamāno mahādhṛtiḥ | māhiṣmatīpatiṃ draṣṭum ājagāma mahān ṛṣiḥ
Then, trembling out of affection for his son's son, the great sage of great firmness came to see the lord of Māhiṣmatī.
Verse 3
sa vāyumārgam āsthāya vāyutulyagatir dvijaḥ | purīṃ māhiṣmatīṃ prāpto manaḥsaṃtāpavikramaḥ
That twice-born, taking the wind's path, going swift as the wind, reached the city of Māhiṣmatī, his prowess now turned to anguish of mind.
Verse 4
so 'marāvatisaṃkāśāṃ hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛtām | praviveśa purīṃ brahmā indrasyevāmarāvatīm
He, the son of Brahmā, entered that city, resembling Amarāvatī, thronged with glad and well-nourished folk, as Indra enters Amarāvatī.
Verse 5
pādacāram ivādityaṃ niṣpatantaṃ sudurdṛśam | tatas te pratyabhijñāya arjunāya nyavedayan
Like the sun descending on foot, exceedingly hard to behold — then, recognizing him, they announced him to Arjuna.
Verse 6
pulastya iti taṃ śrutvā vacanaṃ haihayādhipaḥ | śirasy añjalim uddhṛtya pratyudgacchad dvijottamam
Hearing the word, "It is Pulastya," the Haihaya lord, lifting his joined palms to his head, went forth to meet the best of the twice-born.
Verse 7
purohito 'sya gṛhyārghyaṃ madhuparkaṃ tathāiva ca | purastāt prayayau rājña indrasyeva bṛhaspatiḥ
His house-priest went in front, bearing the argha-offering and likewise the madhuparka (honey-mixture), as Bṛhaspati before Indra.
Verse 8
tatas tam ṛṣim āyāntam udyantam iva bhāskaram | arjuno dṛśya saṃprāptaṃ vavandendra iveśvaram
Then, seeing that sage arriving, come near like the rising sun, Arjuna bowed to him as to the lord Indra.
Verse 9
sa tasya madhuparkaṃ ca pādyam arghyaṃ ca dāpayan | pulastyam āha rājendro harṣagadgadayā girā
Presenting to him the madhuparka, the water for the feet and the argha, the king of kings said to Pulastya, in a voice faltering with joy:
Verse 10
adyeyam amarāvatyā tulyā māhiṣmatī kṛtā | adyāhaṃ tu dvijendrendra yasmāt paśyāmi durdṛśam
"Today this Māhiṣmatī is made equal to Amarāvatī; and today indeed am I (blessed), O lord of the lords of the twice-born, since I behold one so hard to behold."
Verse 11
adya me kuśalaṃ deva adya me kulam uddhṛtam | yat te devagaṇair vandyau vande 'haṃ caraṇāv imau
"Today is my welfare, O god; today is my line uplifted, in that I reverence these two feet of yours, worthy of the reverence of the hosts of the gods."
Verse 12
idaṃ rājyam ime putrā ime dārā ime vayam | brahman kiṃ kurma kiṃ kāryam ājñāpayatu no bhavān
"This kingdom, these sons, these wives, this very self — O Brahman, what shall we do, what is to be done? Let your honour command us."
Verse 13
taṃ dharme 'gniṣu bhṛtyeṣu śivaṃ pṛṣṭvātha pārthivam | pulastyovāca rājānaṃ haihayānāṃ tadārjunam
Having inquired after the king's well-being in respect of dharma, the sacred fires and his servants, Pulastya then said to that Arjuna, king of the Haihayas:
Verse 14
rājendrāmalapadmākṣapūrṇacandranibhānana | atulaṃ te balaṃ yena daśagrīvas tvayā jitaḥ
"O king of kings, whose face is like a spotless lotus and the full moon — unequalled is your strength, by which the ten-necked one has been conquered by you."
Verse 15
bhayād yasyāvatiṣṭhetāṃ niṣpandau sāgarānilau | so 'yam adya tvayā baddhaḥ pautro me 'tīvadurjayaḥ
"For fear of whom the ocean and the wind stood motionless — that very one, exceedingly hard to conquer, my grandson, has today been bound by you."
Verse 16
tat putraka yaśaḥ sphītaṃ nāma viśrāvitaṃ tvayā | madvākyād yācyamāno 'dya muñca vatsa daśānanam
"Thus, dear son, abundant fame, a (great) name, has been spread abroad by you. Entreated now by my word, release, dear one, the ten-faced one."
Verse 17
pulastyājñāṃ sa gṛhyātha akiṃcanavaco 'rjunaḥ | mumoca pārthivendrendro rākṣasendraṃ prahṛṣṭavat
Then Arjuna, accepting Pulastya's command, with the word of one who has nothing (to refuse), that king of the kings of the earth joyfully released the rākṣasa-lord.
Verse 18
sa taṃ pramuktvā tridaśārim arjunaḥ; prapūjya divyābharaṇasragambaraiḥ | ahiṃsākaṃ sakhyam upetya sāgnikaṃ; praṇamya sa brahmasutaṃ gṛhaṃ yayau
Having freed that foe of the gods, Arjuna, honouring him with divine ornaments, garlands and garments, and entering upon a harmless friendship with him before the fire, bowed to the son of Brahmā and went to his house.
Verse 19
pulastyenāpi saṃgamya rākṣasendraḥ pratāpavān | pariṣvaṅgakṛtātithyo lajjamāno visarjitaḥ
And the valiant rākṣasa-lord too, having met with Pulastya, his hospitality shown by an embrace, was dismissed, abashed.
Verse 20
pitāmahasutaś cāpi pulastyo munisattamaḥ | mocayitvā daśagrīvaṃ brahmalokaṃ jagāma saḥ
And the son of the grandsire too, Pulastya, best of sages, having freed the ten-necked one, went to the world of Brahmā.
Verse 21
evaṃ sa rāvaṇaḥ prāptaḥ kārtavīryāt tu dharṣaṇāt | pulastyavacanāc cāpi punar mokṣam avāptavān
Thus that Rāvaṇa, taken by Kārtavīrya through his assault, through Pulastya's word again attained release.
Verse 22
evaṃ balibhyo balinaḥ santi rāghavanandana | nāvajñā parataḥ kāryā ya icchec chreya ātmanaḥ
Thus there are the mighty mightier than the mighty, O delight of the Rāghavas; contempt toward another should not be shown by one who desires his own good.
Verse 23
tataḥ sa rājā piśitāśanānāṃ; sahasrabāhor upalabhya maitrīm | punar narāṇāṃ kadanaṃ cakāra; cacāra sarvāṃ pṛthivīṃ ca darpāt
Then that king of the flesh-eaters, having gained the friendship of the thousand-armed one, again wrought havoc among men, and roamed over all the earth out of pride.
