atha putraḥ pulastyasya viśravā munipuṃgavaḥ | acireṇaiva kālena piteva tapasi sthitaḥ

satyavāñ śīlavān dakṣaḥ svādhyāyanirataḥ śuciḥ | sarvabhogeṣv asaṃsakto nityaṃ dharmaparāyaṇaḥ

    Truthful, of good conduct, able, devoted to sacred study, pure, unattached to all enjoyments, ever intent on dharma;

jñātvā tasya tu tadvṛttaṃ bharadvājo mahān ṛṣiḥ | dadau viśravase bhāryāṃ svāṃ sutāṃ devavarṇinīm

Learning of that conduct of his, the great sage Bharadvāja gave to Viśravas his own daughter, of divine complexion, as wife.

  4. Verse 4

pratigṛhya tu dharmeṇa bharadvājasutāṃ tadā | mudā paramayā yukto viśravā munipuṃgavaḥ

Having received the daughter of Bharadvāja in due rite, Viśravas, the bull among sages, was filled with the highest joy.

Upon her that righteous one begot an offspring endowed with valour, most wondrous, furnished with all brahminical virtues.

When he was born, Pulastya became a joyful grandsire; and well pleased, together with the divine sages, he then made a name for him.

That Vaiśravaṇa, dwelling there in the penance-grove, grew in great splendour like a fire fed with oblations.

  9. Verse 9

To that great soul, abiding in the hermitage, this thought arose: "I shall practise dharma steadfastly, for dharma is the highest goal."

Living on water, then feeding on air, and likewise fasting utterly — thus those thousands of years passed for him as though they were single years.

"For I am even now engaged in creating a fourth among the world-guardians (lokapālas); and the station of Yama, Indra, and Varuṇa is indeed what you desire."

"Venerable one, I have obtained a boon from the lotus-born (Brahmā); but that god, the Prajāpati, appointed no dwelling for me."

"That delightful city, with archways of gold and lapis lazuli (vaidūrya), was long ago forsaken by the rākṣasas, tormented by fear of Viṣṇu — left empty, all the rākṣasa hosts having gone down to the nether world (rasātala)."

By thousands of nairṛtas (rākṣasas), ever glad and joyful, it was in no long time wholly filled, at his command.

From time to time, humble of soul, the lord of wealth would go, full of joy, in the Puṣpaka to his father and his mother.

Praised by the hosts of gods and gandharvas, and likewise by the siddhas together with the cāraṇas, encircled by splendour like the sun girt by its rays through its own radiance, he journeyed, wrapped in glory, to his father's presence.
