  1. Verse 1

nikumbho bhrātaraṃ dṛṣṭvā sugrīveṇa nipātitam | pradahann iva kopena vānarendram avaikṣata

Nikumbha, seeing his brother struck down by Sugrīva, as if burning with wrath, gazed upon the lord of vānaras.

  2. Verse 2

tataḥ sragdāmasaṃnaddhaṃ dattapañcāṅgulaṃ śubham | ādade parighaṃ vīro nagendraśikharopamam

Then the hero took up an auspicious iron bludgeon, bound with garland-wreaths and stamped with the mark of a hand, resembling the peak of a lordly mountain,

  3. Verse 3

hemapaṭṭaparikṣiptaṃ vajravidrumabhūṣitam | yamadaṇḍopamaṃ bhīmaṃ rakṣasāṃ bhayanāśanam

bound round with plates of gold, adorned with diamond and coral, like the rod of Yama, terrible, the dispeller of the rākṣasas' fears.

  4. Verse 4

tam āvidhya mahātejāḥ śakradhvajasamaṃ raṇe | vinanāda vivṛttāsyo nikumbho bhīmavikramaḥ

Whirling it, equal to the banner of Śakra, in the battle, the greatly splendid Nikumbha of fearsome valour, his mouth gaping wide, roared.

  5. Verse 5

urogatena niṣkeṇa bhujasthair aṅgadair api | kuṇḍalābhyāṃ ca mṛṣṭābhyāṃ mālayā ca vicitrayā

With the niṣka upon his chest, and the armlets on his arms, with his two polished earrings and a variegated garland,

  6. Verse 6

nikumbho bhūṣaṇair bhāti tena sma parigheṇa ca | yathendradhanuṣā meghaḥ savidyutstanayitnumān

Nikumbha shone with his ornaments and with that iron bludgeon, like a cloud charged with lightning and thunder, shining with the rainbow of Indra.

  7. Verse 7

parighāgreṇa pusphoṭa vātagranthir mahātmanaḥ | prajajvāla saghoṣaś ca vidhūma iva pāvakaḥ

By the tip of the bludgeon the whirling of that great-souled one split the air with a crack; and it blazed with a roar, like smokeless fire.

  8. Verse 8

nagaryā viṭapāvatyā gandharvabhavanottamaiḥ | saha caivāmarāvatyā sarvaiś ca bhavanaiḥ saha

The city of Viṭapāvatī, with the finest mansions of the gandharvas, and Amarāvatī too, with all its dwellings,

  9. Verse 9

satārāgaṇanakṣatraṃ sacandraṃ samahāgraham | nikumbhaparighāghūrṇaṃ bhramatīva nabhastalam

with its hosts of stars and constellations, the moon and the great planets — the vault of heaven, swept by Nikumbha's bludgeon, seemed to whirl about.

  10. Verse 10

durāsadaś ca saṃjajñe parighābharaṇaprabhaḥ | krodhendhano nikumbhāgnir yugāntāgnir ivotthitaḥ

And he grew unassailable, of the splendour of his bludgeon-ornament; the fire that was Nikumbha, with wrath for its fuel, rose like the fire at the end of an age.

  11. Verse 11

rākṣasā vānarāś cāpi na śekuḥ spandituṃ bhayāt | hanūmaṃs tu vivṛtyoras tasthau pramukhato balī

The rākṣasas and the vānaras too could not stir, for fear; but the mighty Hanumān, baring his breast, stood before him.

  12. Verse 12

parighopamabāhus tu parighaṃ bhāskaraprabham | balī balavatas tasya pātayām āsa vakṣasi

His arm like an iron bludgeon, the mighty Nikumbha brought down the sun-bright bludgeon upon the chest of that mighty one.

  13. Verse 13

sthire tasyorasi vyūḍhe parighaḥ śatadhā kṛtaḥ | viśīryamāṇaḥ sahasā ulkā śatam ivāmbare

Upon his firm, broad chest the bludgeon was made into a hundred pieces, suddenly shattering, like a hundred meteors in the sky.

  14. Verse 14

sa tu tena prahāreṇa cacāla ca mahākapiḥ | parigheṇa samādhūto yathā bhūmicale 'calaḥ

But by that blow the great ape reeled, shaken by the bludgeon, like a mountain in an earthquake.

  15. Verse 15

sa tathābhihatas tena hanūmān plavagottamaḥ | muṣṭiṃ saṃvartayām āsa balenātimahābalaḥ

Thus struck by him, Hanumān, best of the leaping monkeys, exceedingly mighty in strength, clenched his fist.

  16. Verse 16

tam udyamya mahātejā nikumbhorasi vīryavān | abhicikṣepa vegena vegavān vāyuvikramaḥ

Raising it, the greatly splendid, valorous one, swift and of the Wind's prowess, hurled it with force upon Nikumbha's chest.

  17. Verse 17

tataḥ pusphoṭa carmāsya prasusrāva ca śoṇitam | muṣṭinā tena saṃjajñe jvālā vidyud ivotthitā

Then his skin burst, and blood flowed; and by that fist there arose a flame like risen lightning.

  18. Verse 18

sa tu tena prahāreṇa nikumbho vicacāla ha | svasthaś cāpi nijagrāha hanūmantaṃ mahābalam

But by that blow Nikumbha reeled; yet, recovering, he seized the mighty Hanumān.

  19. Verse 19

vicukruśus tadā saṃkhye bhīmaṃ laṅkānivāsinaḥ | nikumbhenoddhṛtaṃ dṛṣṭvā hanūmantaṃ mahābalam

Then the dwellers of Laṅkā cried out dreadfully in the battle, seeing the mighty Hanumān carried off by Nikumbha.

  20. Verse 20

sa tathā hriyamāṇo 'pi kumbhakarṇātmajena hi | ājaghānānilasuto vajravegena muṣṭinā

Though being carried off thus by the son of Kumbhakarṇa, the son of the Wind struck him with a fist of the force of the thunderbolt.

  21. Verse 21

ātmānaṃ mocayitvātha kṣitāv abhyavapadyata | hanūmān unmamathāśu nikumbhaṃ mārutātmajaḥ

Then, freeing himself, he descended to the earth; and Hanumān, son of the Wind, swiftly crushed Nikumbha.

  22. Verse 22

nikṣipya paramāyatto nikumbhaṃ niṣpipeṣa ca | utpatya cāsya vegena papātorasi vīryavān

Pinning him down with utmost effort, he ground Nikumbha; and, springing up, the valorous one fell with force upon his chest.

  23. Verse 23

parigṛhya ca bāhubhyāṃ parivṛtya śirodharām | utpāṭayām āsa śiro bhairavaṃ nadato mahat

And seizing him with his two arms and twisting the neck, he tore off the great head of that one who was roaring dreadfully.

  24. Verse 24

atha vinadati sādite nikumbhe; pavanasutena raṇe babhūva yuddham | daśarathasutarākṣasendracamvor; bhṛśataram āgataroṣayoḥ subhīmam

Then, when Nikumbha, roaring, was struck down by the son of the Wind in the battle, a most terrible fight arose between the armies of Daśaratha's son and the lord of rākṣasas, their fury greatly risen.
