Verse 27

Verse 28
pradhyāyata ivāpaśyat pradīpāṃs tatra kāñcanān | dhūrtān iva mahādhūrtair devanena parājitān
As though absorbed in thought, he beheld there the golden lamps, like gamblers worsted at play by master-gamblers.
The lamps are likened to defeated gamblers standing dejected/motionless; the image is elliptical in the Sanskrit.
Verse 29

Then he beheld, seated upon the carpet, a thousand choice women in garments and garlands of many hues, adorned in manifold attire.
Verse 31
parivṛtte 'rdharātre tu pānanidrāvaśaṃ gatam | krīḍitvoparataṃ rātrau suṣvāpa balavat tadā
Midnight having turned, they had fallen under the sway of drink and sleep; having sported, they ceased their play, and in the night slept deeply then.
Verse 32
tat prasuptaṃ viruruce niḥśabdāntarabhūṣaṇam | niḥśabdahaṃsabhramaraṃ yathā padmavanaṃ mahat
That company, asleep, its ornaments now silent within, shone like a great lotus-grove with its swans and bees fallen silent.
Verse 33
tāsāṃ saṃvṛtadantāni mīlitākṣāṇi mārutiḥ | apaśyat padmagandhīni vadanāni suyoṣitām
The son of the Wind beheld the faces of those fair women, their teeth hidden and their eyes closed, fragrant with the scent of lotus.
Verse 34
prabuddhānīva padmāni tāsāṃ bhūtvā kṣapākṣaye | punaḥsaṃvṛtapatrāṇi rātrāv iva babhus tadā
Like lotuses that had opened at the ebbing of night and then by night again closed their petals, so did their faces appear then.
Verse 35
imāni mukhapadmāni niyataṃ mattaṣaṭpadāḥ | ambujānīva phullāni prārthayanti punaḥ punaḥ
"Surely the drunken bees seek again and again these lotus-faces, taking them for full-blown water-lilies" —
Verse 36
iti vāmanyata śrīmān upapattyā mahākapiḥ | mene hi guṇatas tāni samāni salilodbhavaiḥ
so the glorious great monkey reflected, with reason; for by their qualities he deemed those faces equal to the blossoms born of water.
Verse 37
sā tasya śuśubhe śālā tābhiḥ strībhir virājitā | śāradīva prasannā dyaus tārābhir abhiśobhitā
That hall of his shone, made radiant by those women, like the clear autumn sky made beautiful by the stars.
Verse 38
sa ca tābhiḥ parivṛtaḥ śuśubhe rākṣasādhipaḥ | yathā hy uḍupatiḥ śrīmāṃs tārābhir abhisaṃvṛtaḥ
And he too, the lord of the Rākṣasas, surrounded by them, shone like the glorious moon encircled by the stars.
Verse 39
yāś cyavante 'mbarāt tārāḥ puṇyaśeṣasamāvṛtāḥ | imās tāḥ saṃgatāḥ kṛtsnā iti mene haris tadā
"The stars that fall from the sky when the remnant of their merit is spent — all these, gathered together, are surely here," the monkey then thought.
Verse 40
tārāṇām iva suvyaktaṃ mahatīnāṃ śubhārciṣām | prabhāvarṇaprasādāś ca virejus tatra yoṣitām
The radiance, hue, and grace of those women there shone forth, as plainly as those of great stars of auspicious light.
Verse 41
vyāvṛttagurupīnasrakprakīrṇavarabhūṣaṇāḥ | pānavyāyāmakāleṣu nidrāpahṛtacetasaḥ
Their heavy garlands displaced and their fine ornaments scattered, their senses stolen by sleep after the hours of drink and dalliance;
Verse 42
vyāvṛttatilakāḥ kāś cit kāś cid udbhrāntanūpurāḥ | pārśve galitahārāś ca kāś cit paramayoṣitaḥ
some with their forehead-marks smudged, some with their anklets slipped awry, and some of those peerless women with their necklaces fallen to one side;
कुछ के तिलक मिट गए थे, कुछ के नूपुर टेढ़े हो गए थे, और उन परम सुन्दरियों में से कुछ के हार एक ओर खिसक गए थे;
Verse 43
mukhā hāravṛtāś cānyāḥ kāś cit prasrastavāsasaḥ | vyāviddharaśanā dāmāḥ kiśorya iva vāhitāḥ
others with faces wrapped in their pearl-strings, some with garments slipped loose, their girdle-strings undone — like young fillies worn out with toil.
Verse 44
sukuṇḍaladharāś cānyā vicchinnamṛditasrajaḥ | gajendramṛditāḥ phullā latā iva mahāvane
Others wearing fair ear-rings, their garlands torn and crushed, like blossoming creepers in a great forest trampled by a lordly elephant.
Verse 45
candrāṃśukiraṇābhāś ca hārāḥ kāsāṃ cid utkaṭāḥ | haṃsā iva babhuḥ suptāḥ stanamadhyeṣu yoṣitām
The necklaces of some, bright as the rays of the moon, rose and fell upon their breasts, shining like sleeping swans between the women's bosoms.
Verse 46
aparāsāṃ ca vaidūryāḥ kādambā iva pakṣiṇaḥ | hemasūtrāṇi cānyāsāṃ cakravākā ivābhavan
Of others, the beryls were like kādamba birds, and the golden threads of others became like cakravāka birds.
Verse 47
haṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇāś cakravākopaśobhitāḥ | āpagā iva tā rejur jaghanaiḥ pulinair iva
Strewn with swans and water-fowl and graced with cakravākas, they shone like rivers, their hips for sandbanks.
Verse 48
kiṅkiṇījālasaṃkāśās tā hemavipulāmbujāḥ | bhāvagrāhā yaśastīrāḥ suptā nadya ivābabhuḥ
With their tinkling networks of bells for ripples, their great golden ornaments for lotuses, their amorous feeling for crocodiles and their fame for banks, they shone like sleeping rivers.
Verse 49
mṛduṣv aṅgeṣu kāsāṃ cit kucāgreṣu ca saṃsthitāḥ | babhūvur bhūṣaṇānīva śubhā bhūṣaṇarājayaḥ
Upon the soft limbs of some, and resting upon the tips of their breasts, the bright strings of ornaments were like ornaments themselves.
Verse 50
aṃśukāntāś ca kāsāṃ cin mukhamārutakampitāḥ | upary upari vaktrāṇāṃ vyādhūyante punaḥ punaḥ
The ends of the fine garments of some, stirred by the breath of their mouths, were wafted again and again above their faces.
Verse 51
tāḥ pātākā ivoddhūtāḥ patnīnāṃ ruciraprabhāḥ | nānāvarṇasuvarṇānāṃ vaktramūleṣu rejire
Those bright-shining garment-ends of the wives, raised like banners, of varied and golden hues, glowed about the roots of their faces.
Verse 52
vavalguś cātra kāsāṃ cit kuṇḍalāni śubhārciṣām | mukhamārutasaṃsargān mandaṃ mandaṃ suyoṣitām
And there the ear-rings of some fair women of auspicious lustre swung gently, gently, from the touch of the breath of their mouths.
Verse 53
śarkarāsavagandhaḥ sa prakṛtyā surabhiḥ sukhaḥ | tāsāṃ vadananiḥśvāsaḥ siṣeve rāvaṇaṃ tadā
The breath of their mouths, by nature fragrant and sweet with the scent of sugar-wine, then waited upon Rāvaṇa.
Verse 54
rāvaṇānanaśaṅkāś ca kāś cid rāvaṇayoṣitaḥ | mukhāni sma sapatnīnām upājighran punaḥ punaḥ
And some of Rāvaṇa's women, mistaking them for Rāvaṇa's face, smelt again and again the faces of their co-wives.
Verse 55
atyarthaṃ saktamanaso rāvaṇe tā varastriyaḥ | asvatantrāḥ sapatnīnāṃ priyam evācaraṃs tadā
Those choice women, their hearts exceedingly bound to Rāvaṇa and not their own mistresses, did then only what pleased their rival-wives.
Verse 56
bāhūn upanidhāyānyāḥ pārihārya vibhūṣitāḥ | aṃśukāni ca ramyāṇi pramadās tatra śiśyire
Others, adorned with bracelets, lay there resting their arms as pillows and their lovely garments beneath them.
Verse 57
anyā vakṣasi cānyasyās tasyāḥ kā cit punar bhujam | aparā tv aṅkam anyasyās tasyāś cāpy aparā bhujau
One upon another's breast, another again upon that one's arm; another upon the lap of another, and yet another upon those two's arms;
एक दूसरी के वक्षःस्थल पर, कोई फिर उसकी भुजा पर, कोई दूसरी की गोद में, और कोई उन दोनों की भुजाओं पर सोई थी;
Verse 58
ūrupārśvakaṭīpṛṣṭham anyonyasya samāśritāḥ | parasparaniviṣṭāṅgyo madasnehavaśānugāḥ
leaning each upon another's thigh, flank, waist, and back, their bodies resting upon one another, yielding to the sway of drink and affection;
एक-दूसरे की जाँघ, पार्श्व, कमर और पीठ का सहारा लिए, एक-दूसरे में अंग मिलाए, मद और स्नेह के वश में पड़ी हुई;
Verse 59
anyonyasyāṅgasaṃsparśāt prīyamāṇāḥ sumadhyamāḥ | ekīkṛtabhujāḥ sarvāḥ suṣupus tatra yoṣitaḥ
delighting in the touch of one another's limbs, all those slender-waisted women slept there with arms entwined as one.
Verse 60
anyonyabhujasūtreṇa strīmālāgrathitā hi sā | māleva grathitā sūtre śuśubhe mattaṣaṭpadā
That garland of women, strung together by the thread of one another's arms, shone like a garland strung on a cord, humming with drunken bees.
Verse 61
latānāṃ mādhave māsi phullānāṃ vāyusevanāt | anyonyamālāgrathitaṃ saṃsaktakusumoccayam
Like creepers in the month of Mādhava, blossoming from the touch of the wind, strung together in a garland with one another, their clusters of flowers close-pressed,
माधव मास में वायु के सेवन से खिली हुई लताओं के समान, एक-दूसरे से माला की भाँति गुँथी हुई, जिनके पुष्पगुच्छ परस्पर जुड़े हुए थे;
Verse 62
vyativeṣṭitasuskantham anyonyabhramarākulam | āsīd vanam ivoddhūtaṃ strīvanaṃ rāvaṇasya tat
their fair stems intertwined, humming all about with bees — so was that grove of women of Rāvaṇa, like a forest shaken by the wind.
Verse 63
uciteṣv api suvyaktaṃ na tāsāṃ yoṣitāṃ tadā | vivekaḥ śakya ādhātuṃ bhūṣaṇāṅgāmbarasrajām
Even where it was fitting, no clear distinction could then be drawn among those women, between their ornaments, their limbs, their garments, and their garlands.
Verse 64
rāvaṇe sukhasaṃviṣṭe tāḥ striyo vividhaprabhāḥ | jvalantaḥ kāñcanā dīpāḥ prekṣantānimiṣā iva
As Rāvaṇa lay at his ease, those women of varied lustre, and the blazing golden lamps, gazed on as it were without blinking.
Verse 65
rājarṣipitṛdaityānāṃ gandharvāṇāṃ ca yoṣitaḥ | rakṣasāṃ cābhavan kanyās tasya kāmavaśaṃ gatāḥ
They were the daughters of royal sages, of ancestors, of Daityas and Gandharvas, and the maidens of the Rākṣasas, all come under the sway of his desire.
Verse 66
na tatra kā cit pramadā prasahya; vīryopapannena guṇena labdhā | na cānyakāmāpi na cānyapūrvā; vinā varārhāṃ janakātmajāṃ tu
Not one of those women there had been won by force; each had been gained by his valour and his worth; and none loved another, nor had been another's before — save only the worthy daughter of Janaka.
Verse 67
na cākulīnā na ca hīnarūpā; nādakṣiṇā nānupacāra yuktā | bhāryābhavat tasya na hīnasattvā; na cāpi kāntasya na kāmanīyā
None was of low birth, nor ill-formed, nor unskilled, nor wanting in graces; no wife of his was of mean spirit, nor unloved by her lord, nor unlovely.
Verse 68
babhūva buddhis tu harīśvarasya; yadīdṛśī rāghavadharmapatnī | imā yathā rākṣasarājabhāryāḥ; sujātam asyeti hi sādhubuddheḥ
And this thought arose in the mind of the lord of the monkeys, of righteous judgement: "If Rāghava's lawful wife, who is such a one, were like these wives of the Rākṣasa-king, then well would it be for him" —
Verse 69
punaś ca so 'cintayad ārtarūpo; dhruvaṃ viśiṣṭā guṇato hi sītā | athāyam asyāṃ kṛtavān mahātmā; laṅkeśvaraḥ kaṣṭam anāryakarma
and again he reflected, his aspect pained: "Surely Sītā surpasses these in excellence. Alas, this great-souled lord of Laṅkā has done, concerning her, a base and ignoble deed."
