  1. Verse 1

saṃdīpyamānāṃ vidhvastāṃ trastarakṣo gaṇāṃ purīm | avekṣya hānumāṃl laṅkāṃ cintayām āsa vānaraḥ

Beholding Laṅkā ablaze, laid waste, its rākṣasa hosts terrified, the monkey Hanumān fell to thought.

  2. Verse 2

tasyābhūt sumahāṃs trāsaḥ kutsā cātmany ajāyata | laṅkāṃ pradahatā karma kiṃsvit kṛtam idaṃ mayā

There arose in him a very great dread, and self-reproach was born within: "What deed, alas, is this that I have done in burning Laṅkā!"

  3. Verse 3

dhanyās te puruṣaśreṣṭha ye buddhyā kopam utthitam | nirundhanti mahātmāno dīptam agnim ivāmbhasā

"Blessed are those best of men, the great-souled, who with their understanding restrain rising anger, as one [quenches] a blazing fire with water."

  4. Verse 4

yadi dagdhā tv iyaṃ laṅkā nūnam āryāpi jānakī | dagdhā tena mayā bhartur hataṃ kāryam ajānatā

"If this Laṅkā is burned, then surely the noble Jānakī too is burned; and by me, not knowing it, my lord's purpose has been destroyed."

  5. Verse 5

yad artham ayam ārambhas tat kāryam avasāditam | mayā hi dahatā laṅkāṃ na sītā parirakṣitā

"The very purpose for which this undertaking was made has been undone; for I, in burning Laṅkā, have not safeguarded Sītā."

  6. Verse 6

īṣatkāryam idaṃ kāryaṃ kṛtam āsīn na saṃśayaḥ | tasya krodhābhibhūtena mayā mūlakṣayaḥ kṛtaḥ

"This task was all but accomplished — no doubt of it; yet I, overcome by wrath, have wrought its ruin at the root."

  7. Verse 7

vinaṣṭā jānakī vyaktaṃ na hy adagdhaḥ pradṛśyate | laṅkāyāḥ kaś cid uddeśaḥ sarvā bhasmīkṛtā purī

"Jānakī is plainly destroyed, for no spot of Laṅkā is seen unburned; the whole city has been reduced to ashes."

  8. Verse 8

yadi tad vihataṃ kāryaṃ mayā prajñāviparyayāt | ihaiva prāṇasaṃnyāso mamāpi hy atirocate

"If that task has been foiled by me through a perversion of wisdom, then the laying down of my own life-breath, here and now, is most pleasing to me."

  9. Verse 9

kim agnau nipatāmy adya āhosvid vaḍavāmukhe | śarīram āho sattvānāṃ dadmi sāgaravāsinām

"Shall I cast myself today into the fire, or into the mare's-mouth (the submarine fire)? Or shall I give my body to the creatures that dwell in the ocean?"

  10. Verse 10

kathaṃ hi jīvatā śakyo mayā draṣṭuṃ harīśvaraḥ | tau vā puruṣaśārdūlau kāryasarvasvaghātinā

"For how, living, can I behold the lord of the monkeys, or those two tigers among men — I who have destroyed the whole of the enterprise?"

mayā khalu tad evedaṃ roṣadoṣāt pradarśitam | prathitaṃ triṣu lokeṣu kapitam anavasthitam

"Surely this [folly] of mine has been displayed through the fault of wrath — the monkey-fickleness, unsteady, famed through the three worlds."

  12. Verse 12

dhig astu rājasaṃ bhāvam anīśam anavasthitam | īśvareṇāpi yad rāgān mayā sītā na rakṣitā

"Fie upon the rajas-born temperament, uncontrolled and unsteady, through which I, though master of myself, out of passion did not protect Sītā!"

  13. Verse 13

vinaṣṭāyāṃ tu sītāyāṃ tāv ubhau vinaśiṣyataḥ | tayor vināśe sugrīvaḥ sabandhur vinaśiṣyati

"If Sītā is destroyed, those two (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa) will both perish; and at their destruction, Sugrīva with his kinsmen will perish."

  14. Verse 14

etad eva vacaḥ śrutvā bharato bhrātṛvatsalaḥ | dharmātmā sahaśatrughnaḥ kathaṃ śakṣyati jīvitum

"Hearing this very news, how shall Bharata, loving his brother, the righteous-souled, together with Śatrughna, be able to live?"

  15. Verse 15

ikṣvākuvaṃśe dharmiṣṭhe gate nāśam asaṃśayam | bhaviṣyanti prajāḥ sarvāḥ śokasaṃtāpapīḍitāḥ

"The righteous line of Ikṣvāku being come to ruin — no doubt of it — all the folk will be afflicted, scorched with grief."

  16. Verse 16

tad ahaṃ bhāgyarahito luptadharmārthasaṃgrahaḥ | roṣadoṣaparītātmā vyaktaṃ lokavināśanaḥ

"Thus am I bereft of all fortune, having undone the gathering of dharma and artha, my soul beset by the fault of wrath — plainly a destroyer of the world."

  17. Verse 17

iti cintayatas tasya nimittāny upapedire | pūram apy upalabdhāni sākṣāt punar acintayat

As he was thinking thus, favorable omens presented themselves; and recalling what had before been apprehended, he reflected again, now with the matter before his very eyes:

  18. Verse 18

atha vā cārusarvāṅgī rakṣitā svena tejasā | na naśiṣyati kalyāṇī nāgnir agnau pravartate

"Or rather — she of fair limbs in every part, guarded by her own splendor, the auspicious one, will not perish; fire does not act upon fire."

  19. Verse 19

na hi dharmān manas tasya bhāryām amitatejasaḥ | svacāritrābhiguptāṃ tāṃ spraṣṭum arhati pāvakaḥ

"For the mind of the upholder of dharma — the fire of measureless splendor — would not deign to touch her, the wife of Rāma, shielded by her own [chaste] conduct."

  20. Verse 20

nūnaṃ rāmaprabhāvena vaidehyāḥ sukṛtena ca | yan māṃ dahanakarmāyaṃ nādahad dhavyavāhanaḥ

"Surely it is through Rāma's power and the good deeds of Vaidehī that this fire, whose office is to consume, has not consumed me."

  21. Verse 21

trayāṇāṃ bharatādīnāṃ bhrātṝṇāṃ devatā ca yā | rāmasya ca manaḥkāntā sā kathaṃ vinaśiṣyati

"She who is the very deity of the three brothers, Bharata and the rest, and the beloved of Rāma's heart — how should she perish?"

  22. Verse 22

yad vā dahanakarmāyaṃ sarvatra prabhur avyayaḥ | na me dahati lāṅgūlaṃ katham āryāṃ pradhakṣyati

"Or — this fire, whose office is to consume, the imperishable lord everywhere, does not burn my tail; how then should it burn the noble lady?"

  23. Verse 23

tapasā satyavākyena ananyatvāc ca bhartari | api sā nirdahed agniṃ na tām agniḥ pradhakṣyati

"By her austerity, by her truthful speech, and by her single devotion to her husband, she might rather burn up the fire; the fire shall not burn her."

  24. Verse 24

sa tathā cintayaṃs tatra devyā dharmaparigraham | śuśrāva hanumān vākyaṃ cāraṇānāṃ mahātmanām

As Hanumān was thus pondering upon the queen's store of dharma, he heard the speech of the great-souled cāraṇas:

  25. Verse 25

aho khalu kṛtaṃ karma durviṣahyaṃ hanūmatā | agniṃ visṛjatābhīkṣṇaṃ bhīmaṃ rākṣasasadmani

"Ah, truly a deed hard to endure has been done by Hanumān — loosing fire, fierce and unceasing, upon the dwellings of the rākṣasas."

  26. Verse 26

dagdheyaṃ nagarī laṅkā sāṭṭaprākāratoraṇā | jānakī na ca dagdheti vismayo 'dbhuta eva naḥ

"This city of Laṅkā is burned, with its mansions, ramparts, and gateways; yet Jānakī is not burned — this is to us a wonder, marvelous indeed!"

  27. Verse 27

sa nimittaiś ca dṛṣṭārthaiḥ kāraṇaiś ca mahāguṇaiḥ | ṛṣivākyaiś ca hanumān abhavat prītamānasaḥ

Then Hanumān, by those omens of manifest meaning, by causes of great virtue, and by the words of the sages, became glad at heart.

  28. Verse 28

tataḥ kapiḥ prāptamanorathārthas; tām akṣatāṃ rājasutāṃ viditvā | pratyakṣatas tāṃ punar eva dṛṣṭvā; pratiprayāṇāya matiṃ cakāra

Then the monkey, the object of his longing attained, knowing the princess unharmed, and beholding her once more before his eyes, made up his mind for the return journey.
