  1. Verse 1

tatas te rākṣasendreṇa coditā mantriṇaḥ sutāḥ | niryayur bhavanāt tasmāt sapta saptārcivarcasaḥ

Then, urged on by the lord of the rākṣasas, the ministers' sons went forth from that palace — seven of them, blazing like the seven-flamed fire.

  2. Verse 2

mahābalaparīvārā dhanuṣmanto mahābalāḥ | kṛtāstrāstravidāṃ śreṣṭhāḥ parasparajayaiṣiṇaḥ

Attended by a mighty retinue, bearing bows, of great strength, foremost among those skilled in weapons, each eager to surpass the other in victory.

  3. Verse 3

hemajālaparikṣiptair dhvajavadbhiḥ patākibhiḥ | toyadasvananirghoṣair vājiyuktair mahārathaiḥ

    With great chariots overspread with golden network, bannered and flagged, rumbling like thunderclouds, yoked with swift horses;

    वे सोने की जाली से मढ़े, ध्वजाओं और पताकाओं से सुशोभित, मेघ-गर्जना के समान शब्द करते हुए, तेज़ घोड़ों से जुते विशाल रथों पर सवार थे।

  4. Verse 4

taptakāñcanacitrāṇi cāpāny amitavikramāḥ | visphārayantaḥ saṃhṛṣṭās taḍidvanta ivāmbudāḥ

those warriors of measureless valor, exultant, bent their bows bright with refined gold, like rain-clouds charged with lightning.

  5. Verse 5

jananyas tās tatas teṣāṃ viditvā kiṃkarān hatān | babhūvuḥ śokasaṃbhrāntāḥ sabāndhavasuhṛjjanāḥ

Then their mothers, with their kinsmen and friends, learning that the kiṃkaras had been slain, were overwhelmed and bewildered with grief.

  6. Verse 6

te parasparasaṃgharṣās taptakāñcanabhūṣaṇāḥ | abhipetur hanūmantaṃ toraṇastham avasthitam

Vying with one another, adorned with refined gold, they rushed upon Hanumān as he stood upon the archway.

  7. Verse 7

sṛjanto bāṇavṛṣṭiṃ te rathagarjitaniḥsvanāḥ | vṛṣṭimanta ivāmbhodā vicerur nairṛtarṣabhāḥ

Loosing a rain of arrows, roaring with the thunder of their chariots, those bulls among the rākṣasas ranged about like raining clouds.

  8. Verse 8

avakīrṇas tatas tābhir hanūmāñ śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ | abhavat saṃvṛtākāraḥ śailarāḍ iva vṛṣṭibhiḥ

Then, covered by their showers of arrows, Hanumān became one whose form was veiled, like the king of mountains beneath the rains.

  9. Verse 9

sa śarān vañcayām āsa teṣām āśucaraḥ kapiḥ | rathavegāṃś ca vīrāṇāṃ vicaran vimale 'mbare

That swift-moving monkey eluded their arrows and the rushing of the heroes' chariots, ranging through the clear sky.

  10. Verse 10

sa taiḥ krīḍan dhanuṣmadbhir vyomni vīraḥ prakāśate | dhanuṣmadbhir yathā meghair mārutaḥ prabhur ambare

Sporting with those bowmen, the hero shone forth in the heavens, as the mighty Wind-god shines among the lightning-armed clouds in the sky.

  11. Verse 11

sa kṛtvā ninadaṃ ghoraṃ trāsayaṃs tāṃ mahācamūm | cakāra hanumān vegaṃ teṣu rakṣaḥsu vīryavān

Having uttered a terrible roar and so terrified that great army, the valorous Hanumān hurled his force upon those rākṣasas.

  12. Verse 12

talenābhihanat kāṃś cit pādaiḥ kāṃś cit paraṃtapaḥ | muṣṭinābhyahanat kāṃś cin nakhaiḥ kāṃś cid vyadārayat

The scorcher of foes struck some with his palm, some with his feet; some he smote with his fist, and some he tore with his nails.

  13. Verse 13

pramamāthorasā kāṃś cid ūrubhyām aparān kapiḥ | ke cit tasyaiva nādena tatraiva patitā bhuvi

Some the monkey crushed with his breast, others with his thighs; and some fell to the ground at the very sound of his roar.

  14. Verse 14

tatas teṣv avapanneṣu bhūmau nipatiteṣu ca | tat sainyam agamat sarvaṃ diśo daśabhayārditam

Then, when these had been laid low and fallen upon the earth, that whole army fled in the ten directions, tormented by fear.

  15. Verse 15

vinedur visvaraṃ nāgā nipetur bhuvi vājinaḥ | bhagnanīḍadhvajacchatrair bhūś ca kīrṇābhavad rathaiḥ

The elephants trumpeted discordantly, the horses fell to the ground, and the earth was strewn with chariots whose frames, banners, and parasols lay shattered.

  16. Verse 16

sa tān pravṛddhān vinihatya rākṣasān; mahābalaś caṇḍaparākramaḥ kapiḥ | yuyutsur anyaiḥ punar eva rākṣasais; tad eva vīro 'bhijagāma toraṇam

Having slain those mighty rākṣasas, that monkey of great strength and fierce valor, eager still to fight yet other rākṣasas, returned once more to that very archway.
