Verse 1
tathā bruvati tāre tu tārādhipativarcasi | atha mene hṛtaṃ rājyaṃ hanumān aṅgadena tat
As Tāra, radiant as the lord of stars (the moon), spoke thus, Hanumān judged that the kingdom had been as good as seized by Aṅgada.
Verse 2
buddhyā hy aṣṭāṅgayā yuktaṃ caturbalasamanvitam | caturdaśaguṇaṃ mene hanumān vālinaḥ sutam
Hanumān deemed the son of Vālī endowed with the eightfold intelligence, possessed of the four kinds of power, and gifted with the fourteen qualities,
The 'eightfold intelligence,' 'four powers,' and 'fourteen qualities' are the standard categories of statecraft and character, named here in brief.
Verse 3
āpūryamāṇaṃ śaśvac ca tejobalaparākramaiḥ | śaśinaṃ śuklapakṣādau vardhamānam iva śriyā
ever waxing in splendour, strength, and prowess, like the moon in the first days of the bright fortnight, increasing in glory;
जो तेज, बल और पराक्रम से निरंतर बढ़ता जा रहा था — शुक्लपक्ष के आरंभ में श्री से बढ़ते हुए चंद्रमा के समान;
Verse 4
bṛhaspatisamaṃ buddhyā vikrame sadṛśaṃ pituḥ | śuśrūṣamāṇaṃ tārasya śukrasyeva puraṃdaram
equal to Bṛhaspati in intellect, like his father in prowess, obedient to Tāra as Purandara (Indra) is to Śukra.
The comparison is to the attendance of a pupil upon a preceptor; Tāra here is Aṅgada's counsellor-uncle.
Verse 5
bhartur arthe pariśrāntaṃ sarvaśāstraviśāradam | abhisaṃdhātum ārebhe hanumān aṅgadaṃ tataḥ
Then Hanumān set about winning over Aṅgada — who was wearied for his master's sake and skilled in all the sciences.
Verse 6
sa caturṇām upāyānāṃ tṛtīyam upavarṇayan | bhedayām āsa tān sarvān vānarān vākyasaṃpadā
Employing the third of the four expedients, he set all those monkeys at variance by the richness of his speech.
The 'four expedients' (upāyas) are conciliation, gift, dissension (bheda), and force; here Hanumān uses dissension.
Verse 7
teṣu sarveṣu bhinneṣu tato 'bhīṣayad aṅgadam | bhīṣaṇair bahubhir vākyaiḥ kopopāyasamanvitaiḥ
When they had all been set at variance, he then struck fear into Aṅgada with many terrifying words, employing the expedient of wrath.
Verse 8
tvaṃ samarthataraḥ pitrā yuddhe tāreya vai dhuram | dṛḍhaṃ dhārayituṃ śaktaḥ kapirājyaṃ yathā pitā
"You, son of Tāra, are even more able than your father to bear the yoke in battle, and able to hold the monkey-kingdom firmly, as your father did."
Verse 9
nityam asthiracittā hi kapayo haripuṃgava | nājñāpyaṃ viṣahiṣyanti putradārān vinā tvayā
"Monkeys are ever fickle of mind, O bull among monkeys; they will not endure to be commanded while they are away from their sons and wives, without you."
Verse 10
tvāṃ naite hy anuyuñjeyuḥ pratyakṣaṃ pravadāmi te | yathāyaṃ jāmbavān nīlaḥ suhotraś ca mahākapiḥ
"These here will not follow you — I tell you plainly — namely this Jāmbavān, Nīla, and the great monkey Suhotra."
Verse 11
na hy ahaṃ ta ime sarve sāmadānādibhir guṇaiḥ | daṇḍena na tvayā śakyāḥ sugrīvād apakarṣitum
"For I, and all these here, cannot be drawn away from Sugrīva by you — not by the arts of conciliation, gift, and the rest, nor by force."
Verse 12
vigṛhyāsanam apy āhur durbalena balīyasaḥ | ātmarakṣākaras tasmān na vigṛhṇīta durbalaḥ
"Even in a quarrel, they say, the weaker should make terms with the stronger; therefore let the weak one, mindful of his own safety, not enter into strife."

"And this which you take for a nursing shelter — this cavern you have heard of — this is but a trifling task for Lakṣmaṇa's arrows to rend asunder."
Verse 14
svalpaṃ hi kṛtam indreṇa kṣipatā hy aśaniṃ purā | lakṣmaṇo niśitair bāṇair bhindyāt patrapuṭaṃ yathā | lakṣmaṇasya ca nārācā bahavaḥ santi tadvidhāḥ
"For small indeed was the feat of Indra when of old he hurled his thunderbolt; Lakṣmaṇa with his whetted arrows could split it as one splits a leaf-cup; and Lakṣmaṇa has many iron shafts of that kind."
Verse 15
avasthāne yadaiva tvam āsiṣyasi paraṃtapa | tadaiva harayaḥ sarve tyakṣyanti kṛtaniścayāḥ
"The very moment you sit here in fasting, O scorcher of foes, that very moment all the monkeys, their minds made up, will forsake you,"

smarantaḥ putradārāṇāṃ nityodvignā bubhukṣitāḥ | kheditā duḥkhaśayyābhis tvāṃ kariṣyanti pṛṣṭhataḥ
"remembering their sons and wives, ever anxious and hungry, wearied by their beds of sorrow — they will leave you behind."

Verse 17

"Then you, bereft of friends and of kinsmen who wish you well, will be made to tremble greatly even by a blade of grass that stirs."

Verse 18
na ca jātu na hiṃsyus tvāṃ ghorā lakṣmaṇasāyakāḥ | apavṛttaṃ jighāṃsanto mahāvegā durāsadāḥ
"And the dreadful arrows of Lakṣmaṇa will surely not fail to strike you — those swift, unapproachable shafts, eager to slay you when you turn away."

asmābhis tu gataṃ sārdhaṃ vinītavad upasthitam | ānupūrvyāt tu sugrīvo rājye tvāṃ sthāpayiṣyati
"But if you come with us, presenting yourself in humility, Sugrīva will in due course establish you upon the throne."

"He wishes the good of your mother, and for her sake his very life is lived; and he has no other offspring. Therefore, Aṅgada, let us go."
