Verse 1
sahatārāṅgadābhyāṃ tu gatvā sa hanumān kapiḥ | sugrīveṇa yathoddiṣṭaṃ taṃ deśam upacakrame
Together with Tārā and Aṅgada, the monkey Hanumān went on and reached that region which Sugrīva had pointed out.
Verse 2
sa tu dūram upāgamya sarvais taiḥ kapisattamaiḥ | vicinoti sma vindhyasya guhāś ca gahanāni ca
Having gone far together with all those best of monkeys, he searched the caves and dense thickets of the Vindhya.
Verse 3
parvatāgrān nadīdurgān sarāṃsi vipulān drumān | vṛkṣaṣaṇḍāṃś ca vividhān parvatān ghanapādapān
Mountain-tops, river-fastnesses, lakes, great trees, varied clumps of trees, and mountains thick with trees —
Verse 4
searching everywhere, those heroic monkeys did not see Sītā, Maithilī, the daughter of Janaka.
Verse 5
te bhakṣayanto mūlāni phalāni vividhāni ca | anveṣamāṇā durdharṣā nyavasaṃs tatra tatra ha | sa tu deśo duranveṣo guhāgahanavān mahān
Eating roots and various fruits as they searched, those unassailable ones dwelt here and there; but that region was hard to search, vast, full of caves and dense thickets.
Verse 6
tyaktvā tu taṃ tadā deśaṃ sarve vai hariyūthapāḥ | deśam anyaṃ durādharṣaṃ viviśuś cākutobhayāḥ
Then, leaving that region, all the monkey-leaders entered another, unassailable region, free of any fear from any quarter.
Verse 7
yatra vandhyaphalā vṛkṣā vipuṣpāḥ parṇavarjitāḥ | nistoyāḥ sarito yatra mūlaṃ yatra sudurlabham
There the trees bore barren fruit, were without blossom, stripped of leaves; there the rivers were without water, and roots were exceedingly hard to find.
Verse 8
na santi mahiṣā yatra na mṛgā na ca hastinaḥ | śārdūlāḥ pakṣiṇo vāpi ye cānye vanagocarāḥ
There were no buffaloes there, no deer, no elephants, no tigers, nor birds, nor any other forest-roaming creatures.
Verse 9
snigdhapatrāḥ sthale yatra padminyaḥ phullapaṅkajāḥ | prekṣaṇīyāḥ sugandhāś ca bhramaraiś cāpi varjitāḥ
There on the ground lotus-plants with glossy leaves and open lotuses, lovely to look upon and fragrant, were yet forsaken even by the bees.
Verse 10
kaṇḍur nāma mahābhāgaḥ satyavādī tapodhanaḥ | maharṣiḥ paramāmarṣī niyamair duṣpradharṣaṇaḥ
There was a greatly blessed, truth-speaking sage, rich in austerity, named Kaṇḍu — a great seer, exceedingly severe, and through his vows unassailable.
Verse 11
tasya tasmin vane putro bālako daśavārṣikaḥ | pranaṣṭo jīvitāntāya kruddhas tatra mahāmuniḥ
His son, a boy of ten years, was lost in that forest and met his end; and at that the great sage grew wrathful.
Verse 12
tena dharmātmanā śaptaṃ kṛtsnaṃ tatra mahad vanam | aśaraṇyaṃ durādharṣaṃ mṛgapakṣivivarjitam
By that righteous one the whole of that great forest there was cursed — made a place of no refuge, unassailable, bereft of beasts and birds.
Verse 13
tasya te kānanāntāṃs tu girīṇāṃ kandarāṇi ca | prabhavāni nadīnāṃca vicinvanti samāhitāḥ
Its woodland borders, the mountains' caverns, and the sources of its rivers they searched with full attention.
Verse 14
tatra cāpi mahātmāno nāpaśyañ janakātmajām | hartāraṃ rāvaṇaṃ vāpi sugrīvapriyakāriṇaḥ
Yet there too those great-souled ones who sought to please Sugrīva did not see the daughter of Janaka, nor her ravisher Rāvaṇa.
Verse 15
te praviśya tu taṃ bhīmaṃ latāgulmasamāvṛtam | dadṛśuḥ krūrakarmāṇam asuraṃ suranirbhayam
Entering that fearful place overgrown with creepers and thickets, they beheld an asura of cruel deeds, fearless of the gods.
Verse 16
taṃ dṛṣṭvā vanarā ghoraṃ sthitaṃ śailam ivāparam | gāḍhaṃ parihitāḥ sarve dṛṣṭvā taṃ parvatopamam
Seeing that dreadful one standing like a second mountain, all the monkeys, beholding him resembling a peak, girded themselves tightly.
Verse 17
so 'pi tān vānarān sarvān naṣṭāḥ sthety abravīd balī | abhyadhāvata saṃkruddho muṣṭim udyamya saṃhitam
That mighty one too, crying out to all those monkeys, "You are lost!", rushed at them in fury, raising his clenched fist.
Verse 18
tam āpatantaṃ sahasā vāliputro 'ṅgadas tadā
Then, as he came swooping down, Aṅgada, the son of Vālī, [struck him].
The half-verse is elliptical; the verb of Aṅgada's action is supplied only in the next verse, where it is said the asura was struck down by Vālī's son.
Verse 19
sa vāliputrābhihato vaktrāc choṇitam udvaman | rāvaṇo 'yam iti jñātvā talenābhijaghāna ha
Struck by the son of Vālī, vomiting blood from his mouth, he (Aṅgada), thinking "This is Rāvaṇa," smote him with the flat of his hand.
The subject and object shift within the verse: the asura, struck, vomits blood; Aṅgada, taking him for Rāvaṇa, strikes him down with his palm.
Verse 20
asuro nyapatad bhūmau paryasta iva parvataḥ | te tu tasmin nirucchvāse vānarā jitakāśinaḥ | vyacinvan prāyaśas tatra sarvaṃ tad girigahvaram
The asura fell to the ground like an overturned mountain. When he had breathed his last, the monkeys, looking victorious, searched almost all of that mountain cavern there.
Verse 21
vicitaṃ tu tataḥ kṛtvā sarve te kānanaṃ punaḥ | anyadevāparaṃ ghoraṃ viviśur girigahvaram
Having searched that forest, they all once again entered yet another dreadful mountain cavern.
Verse 22
te vicintya punaḥ khinnā viniṣpatya samāgatāḥ | ekānte vṛkṣamūle tu niṣedur dīnamānasāḥ
Having searched it, wearied once more, they came out and gathered together, and sat down apart at the foot of a tree, downcast in mind.
