  43. Verse 43

tatra tat kopajaṃ tejaḥ kṛtaṃ hayamukhaṃ mahat | asyāhus tan mahāvegam odanaṃ sacarācaram

There is that great fire born of wrath, made with a mare's mouth; they say its food, of mighty rush, is all that moves and moves not.

The Vaḍavā or mare's-mouth fire submerged beneath the sea.

  44. Verse 44

tatra vikrośatāṃ nādo bhūtānāṃ sāgaraukasām | śrūyate cāsamarthānāṃ dṛṣṭvā tad vaḍavāmukham

There is heard the cry of the helpless beings dwelling in that ocean, as they behold that mare's-mouth fire.

  45. Verse 45

svādūdasyottare deśe yojanāni trayodaśa | jātarūpaśilo nāma mahān kanakaparvataḥ

In the region north of the Sweet-Water sea, thirteen yojanas distant, is a great golden mountain named Jātarūpaśila.

  46. Verse 46

āsīnaṃ parvatasyāgre sarvabhūtanamaskṛtam | sahasraśirasaṃ devam anantaṃ nīlavāsasaṃ

—seated upon the summit of that mountain, honored by all beings, is the thousand-headed god Ananta, clad in dark blue.

  47. Verse 47

triśirāḥ kāñcanaḥ ketus tālas tasya mahātmanaḥ | sthāpitaḥ parvatasyāgre virājati savedikaḥ

A three-headed golden banner with a palm-tree emblem, belonging to that great soul, set upon the mountain's crest, shines together with its altar-platform.

  48. Verse 48

pūrvasyāṃ diśi nirmāṇaṃ kṛtaṃ tat tridaśeśvaraiḥ | tataḥ paraṃ hemamayaḥ śrīmān udayaparvataḥ

That structure was fashioned in the eastern quarter by the lords of the thirty gods. Beyond it is the glorious golden Udaya mountain.

  49. Verse 49

tasya koṭir divaṃ spṛṣṭvā śatayojanam āyatā | jātarūpamayī divyā virājati savedikā

Its peak, touching heaven, stretches a hundred yojanas, golden and divine, and shines with its altar-platform.

  50. Verse 50

sālais tālais tamālaiś ca karṇikāraiś ca puṣpitaiḥ | jātarūpamayair divyaiḥ śobhate sūryasaṃnibhaiḥ

With sālas, tālas, tamālas, and blossoming karṇikāras, divine and golden, resembling the sun, it is resplendent.

  51. Verse 51

tatra yojanavistāram ucchritaṃ daśayojanam | śṛṅgaṃ saumanasaṃ nāma jātarūpamayaṃ dhruvam

There, a yojana broad and ten yojanas high, is a peak named Saumanasa, of gold, fixed and abiding.

  52. Verse 52

tatra pūrvaṃ padaṃ kṛtvā purā viṣṇus trivikrame | dvitīyaṃ śikharaṃ meroś cakāra puruṣottamaḥ

There, in his three strides of old, Viṣṇu set his first foot; and the Supreme Person made his second upon the peak of Meru.

  53. Verse 53

uttareṇa parikramya jambūdvīpaṃ divākaraḥ | dṛśyo bhavati bhūyiṣṭhaṃ śikharaṃ tan mahocchrayam

Circling Jambūdvīpa by the north, the Sun becomes most abundantly visible from that peak of great height.

  54. Verse 54

tatra vaikhānasā nāma vālakhilyā maharṣayaḥ | prakāśamānā dṛśyante sūryavarṇās tapasvinaḥ

There the great sages named Vaikhānasas and Vālakhilyas, radiant, are seen — ascetics of the hue of the sun.

  55. Verse 55

ayaṃ sudarśano dvīpaḥ puro yasya prakāśate | yasmiṃs tejaś ca cakṣuś ca sarvaprānabhṛtām api

This is the island Sudarśana, before which the sun shines — that in which is the light and the eye of all breathing creatures.

  56. Verse 56

śailasya tasya kuñjeṣu kandareṣu vaneṣu ca | rāvaṇaḥ saha vaidehyā mārgitavyas tatas tataḥ

In the bowers, the caverns, and the woods of that mountain, Rāvaṇa, together with Vaidehī, is to be sought, here and there.

  57. Verse 57

kāñcanasya ca śailasya sūryasya ca mahātmanaḥ | āviṣṭā tejasā saṃdhyā pūrvā raktā prakāśate

Pervaded by the splendor of that golden mountain and of the great-souled Sun, the eastern twilight shines red, as if steeped in it.

  58. Verse 58

tataḥ paramagamyā syād dik pūrvā tridaśāvṛtā | rahitā candrasūryābhyām adṛśyā timirāvṛtā

Beyond that, the eastern quarter, encompassed by the thirty gods, is impassable — void of sun and moon, unseen, wrapped in darkness.

  59. Verse 59

śaileṣu teṣu sarveṣu kandareṣu vaneṣu ca | ya ca noktā mayā deśā viceyā teṣu jānakī

On all those mountains, in the caverns and the forests, and in the regions I have not named, Jānakī is to be searched for.

  60. Verse 60

etāvad vānaraiḥ śakyaṃ gantuṃ vānarapuṃgavāḥ | abhāskaram amaryādaṃ na jānīmas tataḥ param

Thus far is it possible for monkeys to go, O bulls among monkeys; the sunless, boundary-less region beyond that we do not know.

  61. Verse 61

adhigamya tu vaidehīṃ nilayaṃ rāvaṇasya ca | māse pūrṇe nivartadhvam udayaṃ prāpya parvatam

Having found Vaidehī and the abode of Rāvaṇa, return when the month is full, having reached the Udaya mountain.

  62. Verse 62

ūrdhvaṃ māsān na vastavyaṃ vasan vadhyo bhaven mama | siddhārthāḥ saṃnivartadhvam adhigamya ca maithilīm

You must not stay beyond a month; one who stays longer shall merit death at my hand. Having found Maithilī, return with your ends achieved.

  63. Verse 63

mahendrakāntāṃ vanaṣaṇḍa maṇḍitāṃ; diśaṃ caritvā nipuṇena vānarāḥ | avāpya sītāṃ raghuvaṃśajapriyāṃ; tato nivṛttāḥ sukhito bhaviṣyatha

Having skillfully ranged that eastern quarter, beloved of great Indra and graced with woodland thickets, O monkeys, and won tidings of Sītā, dear to the scion of the Raghu line, then, returned, you shall be happy.
