  1. Verse 1

samīkṣya vimalaṃ vyoma gatavidyudbalāhakam | sārasāravasaṃghuṣṭaṃ ramyajyotsnānulepanam

Beholding the sky grown clear, its lightnings and clouds departed, resounding with the cries of cranes and anointed with lovely moonlight—

  2. Verse 2

samṛddhārthaṃ ca sugrīvaṃ mandadharmārthasaṃgraham | atyartham asatāṃ mārgam ekāntagatamānasaṃ

—and seeing Sugrīva, his aims fulfilled but slack in the pursuit of righteousness and gain, his mind wholly given over to the ways of the base—

  3. Verse 3

nivṛttakāryaṃ siddhārthaṃ pramadābhirataṃ sadā | prāptavantam abhipretān sarvān eva manorathān

—his task laid aside, his purpose attained, forever given to the delights of women, having won all his cherished desires—

  4. Verse 4

svāṃ ca pātnīm abhipretāṃ tārāṃ cāpi samīpsitām | viharantam ahorātraṃ kṛtārthaṃ vigatajvalam

—sporting day and night with his own longed-for wife, and with Tārā too, now won, his purpose achieved and his fever gone—

  5. Verse 5

krīḍantam iva deveśaṃ nandane 'psarasāṃ gaṇaiḥ | mantriṣu nyastakāryaṃ ca mantriṇām anavekṣakam

—like the lord of the gods disporting in Nandana with troops of apsarases, his duties laid upon his ministers and his ministers themselves no longer heeded—

  6. Verse 6

utsannarājyasaṃdeśaṃ kāmavṛttam avasthitam | niścitārtho 'rthatattvajñaḥ kāladharmaviśeṣavit

—the charge of his kingship fallen into neglect, and himself abiding in the indulgence of desire; then the son of the Wind, firm of purpose, knower of the truth of statecraft, versed in the special duties of the season,

  7. Verse 7

prasādya vākyair madhurair hetumadbhir manoramaiḥ | vākyavid vākyatattvajñaṃ harīśaṃ mārutātmajaḥ

skilled in speech, having won over with sweet, reasoned, and pleasing words the lord of the monkeys, himself a knower of the import of speech,

  8. Verse 8

hitaṃ tathyaṃ ca pathyaṃ ca sāmadharmārthanītimat | praṇayaprītisaṃyuktaṃ viśvāsakṛtaniścayam | harīśvaram upāgamya hanumān vākyam abravīt

approaching that lord of the monkeys, spoke words beneficial, true, and wholesome, fraught with conciliation, righteousness, gain, and policy, joined with affection and goodwill, and framed to inspire trust:

  9. Verse 9

rājyaṃ prāptaṃ yaśaś caiva kaulī śrīr abhivarthitā | mitrāṇāṃ saṃgrahaḥ śeṣas tad bhavān kartum arhati

The kingdom is won, and fame as well; the ancestral fortune is increased. What remains is the gathering-in of allies, and this your lordship ought to do.

  10. Verse 10

yo hi mitreṣu kālajñaḥ satataṃ sādhu vartate | tasya rājyaṃ ca kīrtiś ca pratāpaś cābhivardhate

He who, knowing the fit time, acts ever rightly toward his friends — his kingdom, his renown, and his majesty all increase.

  11. Verse 11

yasya kośaś ca daṇḍaś ca mitrāṇy ātmā ca bhūmipa | samavetāni sarvāṇi sa rājyaṃ mahad aśnute

That lord of the earth whose treasury, army, allies, and own self are all gathered together — he enjoys a great kingdom.

  12. Verse 12

tad bhavān vṛttasaṃpannaḥ sthitaḥ pathi niratyaye | mitrārtham abhinītārthaṃ yathāvat kartum arhati

Therefore your lordship, endowed with good conduct and set upon the faultless path, ought duly to perform the service of your ally.

  13. Verse 13

But he who busies himself with a friend's affairs when their proper times are past — though he accomplish great things, gains not the fruit of that friendship.

  14. Verse 14

kriyatāṃ rāghavasyaitad vaidehyāḥ parimārgaṇam | tad idaṃ vīra kāryaṃ te kālātītam ariṃdama

Let this be done — the search for Rāghava's Vaidehī. This task of yours, O hero, O subduer of foes, is already past its due hour.

  15. Verse 15

na ca kālam atītaṃ te nivedayati kālavit | tvaramāṇo 'pi san prājñas tava rājan vaśānugaḥ

And, knowing the time, he does not tell you that your time is overpast; though, even as a wise man who feels the urgency, he remains obedient to your will, O king.

  16. Verse 16

kulasya ketuḥ sphītasya dīrghabandhuś ca rāghavaḥ | aprameyaprabhāvaś ca svayaṃ cāpratimo guṇaiḥ

Rāghava is the banner of a flourishing line and a steadfast ally, of immeasurable power, and himself matchless in his virtues.

  17. Verse 17

tasya tvaṃ kuru vai kāryaṃ pūrvaṃ tena kṛtaṃ tava | harīśvara hariśreṣṭhān ājñāpayitum arhasi

Do you indeed perform his task, since he first performed yours. O lord of the monkeys, you ought now to command the foremost of the monkeys.

  18. Verse 18

na hi tāvad bhavet kālo vyatītaś codanād ṛte | coditasya hi kāryasya bhavet kālavyatikramaḥ

For in truth the time is not reckoned past until a summons is given; only of a task once enjoined can there be a transgression of its time.

  19. Verse 19

akartur api kāryasya bhavān kartā harīśvara | kiṃ punaḥ pratikartus te rājyena ca dhanena ca

O lord of the monkeys, you would act even in a cause not your own; how much more in one that repays a kindness, now that through it you have gained kingdom and wealth.

  20. Verse 20

śaktimān asi vikrānto vānararṣka gaṇeśvara | kartuṃ dāśaratheḥ prītim ājñāyāṃ kiṃ nu sajjase

You are mighty and valorous, O lord of the hosts of monkeys and bears; in doing the pleasure of Daśaratha's son, why then do you tarry over his bidding?

  21. Verse 21

kāmaṃ khalu śarair śaktaḥ surāsuramahoragān | vaśe dāśarathiḥ kartuṃ tvatpratijñāṃ tu kāṅkṣate

Truly, though Daśaratha's son is able with his arrows to bring under his sway gods, asuras, and the great serpents, yet he awaits the fulfillment of your pledge.

  22. Verse 22

prāṇatyāgāviśaṅkena kṛtaṃ tena tava priyam | tasya mārgāma vaidehīṃ pṛthivyām api cāmbare

Reckless of the loss of his very life, he did you a good office; let us then seek out Vaidehī for him, upon the earth and in the sky.

  23. Verse 23

na devā na ca gandharvā nāsurā na marudgaṇāḥ | na ca yakṣā bhayaṃ tasya kuryuḥ kim uta rākṣasāḥ

Neither gods nor gandharvas, neither asuras nor the hosts of the Maruts, nor the yakṣas could strike fear into him — how much less the rākṣasas?

  24. Verse 24

tad evaṃ śaktiyuktasya pūrvaṃ priyakṛtas tathā | rāmasyārhasi piṅgeśa kartuṃ sarvātmanā priyam

Therefore, O lord of the tawny ones, to Rāma, so endowed with might and the former doer of your good, you ought with all your soul to render service.

  25. Verse 25

nādhastād avanau nāpsu gatir nopari cāmbare | kasya cit sajjate 'smākaṃ kapīśvara tavājñayā

There is no path below upon the earth, nor in the waters, nor above in the sky that is barred to any of us, O lord of the monkeys, at your command.

  26. Verse 26

tad ājñāpaya kaḥ kiṃ te kṛte vasatu kutra cit | harayo hy apradhṛṣyās te santi koṭyagrato 'nagha

Therefore give command: who is to do what, and where he is to be stationed. For yours, O sinless one, are unassailable monkeys, numbering more than a crore.

  27. Verse 27

tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā kāle sādhuniveditam | sugrīvaḥ sattvasaṃpannaś cakāra matim uttamām

Hearing that speech of his, well spoken in season, Sugrīva, endowed with resolve, formed the best of resolutions.

  28. Verse 28

sa saṃdideśābhimataṃ nīlaṃ nityakṛtodyamam | dikṣu sarvāsu sarveṣāṃ sainyānām upasaṃgrahe

He charged Nīla, ever diligent in effort, to muster all the armies in all the quarters:

  29. Verse 29

yathā senā samagrā me yūthapālāś ca sarvaśaḥ | samāgacchanty asaṃgena senāgrāṇi tathā kuru

So order the vanguards of the host that my whole army and all the troop-leaders may assemble without hindrance.

  30. Verse 30

ye tv antapālāḥ plavagāḥ śīghragā vyavasāyinaḥ | samānayantu te sainyaṃ tvaritāḥ śāsanān mama | svayaṃ cānantaraṃ sainyaṃ bhavān evānupaśyatu

Let those swift-going, resolute monkeys who are the wardens of the frontiers bring in the army in haste at my command; and do you yourself thereafter oversee the host.

  31. Verse 31

tripañcarātrād ūrdhvaṃ yaḥ prāpnuyān neha vānaraḥ | tasya prāṇāntiko daṇḍo nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

Whatever monkey arrives here beyond thrice five nights, for him the penalty is death — herein let there be no deliberation.

  32. Verse 32

harīṃś ca vṛddhān upayātu sāṅgado; bhavān mamājñām adhikṛtya niścitām | iti vyavasthāṃ haripuṃgaveśvaro; vidhāya veśma praviveśa vīryavān

And let your lordship, together with Aṅgada, go to the elder monkeys, holding fast to my firm command. Having thus laid down the ordinance, the valorous lord of the bulls among monkeys entered his palace.
