  1. Verse 1

rāmasya vacanaṃ śrutvā bharataḥ pratyuvāca ha | kiṃ me dharmād vihīnasya rājadharmaḥ kariṣyati

Having heard Rāma's words, Bharata replied: "What will the duties of kingship do for me, who am bereft of the right to them?

  2. Verse 2

śāśvato 'yaṃ sadā dharmaḥ sthito 'smāsu nararṣabha | jyeṣṭha putre sthite rājan na kanīyān bhaven nṛpaḥ

This is the eternal dharma, ever established among us, O bull among men: while the eldest son lives, O king, the younger may not be king.

  3. Verse 3

sa samṛddhāṃ mayā sārdham ayodhyāṃ gaccha rāghava | abhiṣecaya cātmānaṃ kulasyāsya bhavāya naḥ

Come with me to prosperous Ayodhyā, O Rāghava, and consecrate yourself, for the welfare of this our line.

  4. Verse 4

rājānaṃ mānuṣaṃ prāhur devatve saṃmato mama | yasya dharmārthasahitaṃ vṛttam āhur amānuṣam

They call a king a man; but in my view he is held of divine nature, whose conduct, joined with dharma and artha, they call superhuman.

  5. Verse 5

kekayasthe ca mayi tu tvayi cāraṇyam āśrite | divam ārya gato rājā yāyajūkaḥ satāṃ mataḥ

While I was in the land of the Kekayas and you were dwelling in the forest, the king — a performer of many sacrifices, esteemed by the good — has gone to heaven, O noble one."

  6. Verse 6

uttiṣṭha puruṣavyāghra kriyatām udakaṃ pituḥ | ahaṃ cāyaṃ ca śatrughnaḥ pūrvam eva kṛtodakau

"Rise, O tiger among men; let the water-offering be made for our father. I and this Śatrughna have already made ours.

  7. Verse 7

priyeṇa kila dattaṃ hi pitṛlokeṣu rāghava | akṣayyaṃ bhavatīty āhur bhavāṃś caiva pituḥ priyaḥ

For what is given with love, they say, becomes imperishable in the ancestors' worlds, O Rāghava; and you are dear to our father."

  8. Verse 8

tāṃ śrutvā karuṇāṃ vācaṃ pitur maraṇasaṃhitām | rāghavo bharatenoktāṃ babhūva gatacetanaḥ

Hearing that piteous speech, touching his father's death, spoken by Bharata, Rāghava became bereft of consciousness.

  9. Verse 9

vāgvajraṃ bharatenoktam amanojñaṃ paraṃtapaḥ | pragṛhya bāhū rāmo vai puṣpitāgro yathā drumaḥ | vane paraśunā kṛttas tathā bhuvi papāta ha

At that word — a thunderbolt of speech, unwelcome, spoken by Bharata — Rāma, the scorcher of foes, having raised his arms, fell to the ground like a flower-crowned tree felled by the axe in the forest.

  10. Verse 10

tathā hi patitaṃ rāmaṃ jagatyāṃ jagatīpatim | kūlaghātapariśrāntaṃ prasuptam iva kuñjaram

At Rāma so fallen upon the earth — the lord of the earth, like an elephant worn out with battering a riverbank and lying asleep —

  11. Verse 11

bhrātaras te maheṣvāsaṃ sarvataḥ śokakarśitam | rudantaḥ saha vaidehyā siṣicuḥ salilena vai

his brothers, those great archers, worn utterly with grief, weeping together with Vaidehī, sprinkled him with water.

  12. Verse 12

sa tu saṃjñāṃ punar labdhvā netrābhyām āsram utsṛjan | upākrāmata kākutsthaḥ kṛpaṇaṃ bahubhāṣitum

But he, regaining his senses, shedding tears from both eyes, Kākutstha began piteously to speak much:

  13. Verse 13

kiṃ nu tasya mayā kāryaṃ durjātena mahātmanā | yo mṛto mama śokena na mayā cāpi saṃskṛtaḥ

"What now must I do for him, that great soul so ill-fated in death, who has died of grief for me, and whom I did not even bring to the rites?

  14. Verse 14

aho bharata siddhārtho yena rājā tvayānagha | śatrugheṇa ca sarveṣu pretakṛtyeṣu satkṛtaḥ

Ah, Bharata, you are one whose purpose is fulfilled, by whom, O sinless one, together with Śatrughna, the king has been honored in all the funeral rites.

  15. Verse 15

niṣpradhānām anekāgraṃ narendreṇa vinākṛtām | nivṛttavanavāso 'pi nāyodhyāṃ gantum utsahe

Though my forest-dwelling is ended, I have no heart to go to Ayodhyā — bereft of its chief, no longer single-minded, robbed of the lord of men.

  16. Verse 16

samāptavanavāsaṃ mām ayodhyāyāṃ paraṃtapa | ko nu śāsiṣyati punas tāte lokāntaraṃ gate

When my exile is completed, O scorcher of foes, who now will guide me in Ayodhyā, now that our father has gone to the other world?

  17. Verse 17

purā prekṣya suvṛttaṃ māṃ pitā yāny āha sāntvayan | vākyāni tāni śroṣyāmi kutaḥ karṇasukhāny aham

Those words my father spoke of old, consoling me, beholding my good conduct — whence now shall I hear them, sweet to the ear?"

  18. Verse 18

evam uktvā sa bharataṃ bhāryām abhyetya rāghavaḥ | uvāca śokasaṃtaptaḥ pūrṇacandranibhānanām

Having spoken thus to Bharata, Rāghava, scorched with grief, came to his wife, whose face was like the full moon, and said:

  19. Verse 19

sīte mṛtas te śvaśuraḥ pitrā hīno 'si lakṣmaṇa | bharato duḥkham ācaṣṭe svargataṃ pṛthivīpatim

"Sītā, your father-in-law is dead; you, Lakṣmaṇa, are bereft of a father; Bharata brings the sorrowful word — the lord of the earth has gone to heaven."

  20. Verse 20

sāntvayitvā tu tāṃ rāmo rudantīṃ janakātmajām | uvāca lakṣmaṇaṃ tatra duḥkhito duḥkhitaṃ vacaḥ

Having consoled her, Janaka's weeping daughter, Rāma there spoke to Lakṣmaṇa — himself grieving — these grieving words:

  21. Verse 21

ānayeṅgudipiṇyākaṃ cīram āhara cottaram | jalakriyārthaṃ tātasya gamiṣyāmi mahātmanaḥ

"Bring the ingudi-paste, and fetch the bark upper-garment; I shall go for the water-rite of our great-souled father.

  22. Verse 22

sītā purastād vrajatu tvam enām abhito vraja | ahaṃ paścād gamiṣyāmi gatir hy eṣā sudāruṇā

Let Sītā go in front; you walk close beside her; I shall go behind — for this path of mourning is most grievous."

  23. Verse 23

tato nityānugas teṣāṃ viditātmā mahāmatiḥ | mṛdur dāntaś ca śāntaś ca rāme ca dṛḍha bhaktimān

Then their ever-attendant, high-minded Sumantra — gentle, controlled, calm, and firmly devoted to Rāma, of self-possessed soul —

  24. Verse 24

sumantras tair nṛpasutaiḥ sārdham āśvāsya rāghavam | avātārayad ālambya nadīṃ mandākinīṃ śivām

having consoled Rāghava along with those princes, led them down, supporting them, to the auspicious river Mandākinī.

  25. Verse 25

te sutīrthāṃ tataḥ kṛcchrād upāgamya yaśasvinaḥ | nadīṃ mandākinīṃ ramyāṃ sadā puṣpitakānanām

Then those illustrious ones, coming with difficulty to a fair ford of the lovely Mandākinī, its groves ever in blossom,

  26. Verse 26

śīghrasrotasam āsādya tīrthaṃ śivam akardamam | siṣicus tūdakaṃ rājñe tata etad bhavatv iti

reaching the swift-flowing stream at an auspicious, mud-free ford, poured out the water for the king, saying, "Let this be for you."

  27. Verse 27

pragṛhya ca mahīpālo jalapūritam añjalim | diśaṃ yāmyām abhimukho rudan vacanam abravīt

And the lord of the earth, taking up a cupped handful filled with water, facing the southern (Yama's) quarter, weeping, spoke these words:

  28. Verse 28

etat te rājaśārdūla vimalaṃ toyam akṣayam | pitṛlokagatasyādya maddattam upatiṣṭhatu

"This clear, imperishable water, O tiger among kings, offered by me today, may it reach you, now gone to the ancestors' world."

  29. Verse 29

Then, coming up again from the bank of the Mandākinī, the splendid Rāghava made the offering for his father, together with his brothers.

  30. Verse 30

aiṅgudaṃ badarīmiśraṃ piṇyākaṃ darbhasaṃstare | nyasya rāmaḥ suduḥkhārto rudan vacanam abravīt

Laying upon the darbha-spread the ingudi-paste mixed with jujube, Rāma, sore stricken with grief, weeping, spoke these words:

  31. Verse 31

idaṃ bhuṅkṣva mahārājaprīto yad aśanā vayam | yadannaḥ puruṣo bhavati tadannās tasya devatāḥ

"Partake of this, O great king, and be pleased with that whereon we feed; for of whatever food a man partakes, of that same food are his deities (the manes)."

  32. Verse 32

tatas tenaiva mārgeṇa pratyuttīrya nadītaṭāt | āruroha naravyāghro ramyasānuṃ mahīdharam

Then by that same path, coming up again from the river-bank, the tiger among men climbed the mountain with its lovely slopes.

  33. Verse 33

tataḥ parṇakuṭīdvāram āsādya jagatīpatiḥ | parijagrāha pāṇibhyām ubhau bharatalakṣmaṇau

Then, reaching the door of the leaf-hut, the lord of the earth clasped in both his arms the two, Bharata and Lakṣmaṇa.

  34. Verse 34

teṣāṃ tu rudatāṃ śabdāt pratiśrutkābhavad girau | bhrātṝṇāṃ saha vaidehyā siṃhānāṃ nardatām iva

From the sound of their weeping — the brothers' together with Vaidehī's — there arose an echo in the mountain, as of roaring lions.

  35. Verse 35

vijñāya tumulaṃ śabdaṃ trastā bharatasainikāḥ | abruvaṃś cāpi rāmeṇa bharataḥ saṃgato dhruvam | teṣām eva mahāñ śabdaḥ śocatāṃ pitaraṃ mṛtam

Hearing that tumultuous sound, Bharata's soldiers were struck with fear and said, "Surely Bharata has met with Rāma; this great sound is of them, grieving for their dead father."

  36. Verse 36

atha vāsān parityajya taṃ sarve 'bhimukhāḥ svanam | apy eka manaso jagmur yathāsthānaṃ pradhāvitāḥ

Then, abandoning their quarters, all of them, turned toward that sound, went as if of one mind, each hastening from his place.

  37. Verse 37

hayair anye gajair anye rathair anye svalaṃkṛtaiḥ | sukumārās tathaivānye padbhir eva narā yayuḥ

Some by horses, some by elephants, some by well-adorned chariots, and others — the delicate ones — the men went on foot alone.

  38. Verse 38

aciraproṣitaṃ rāmaṃ ciraviproṣitaṃ yathā | draṣṭukāmo janaḥ sarvo jagāma sahasāśramam

All the people, longing to see Rāma — but a short while gone, yet as though long absent — went at once to the hermitage.

  39. Verse 39

bhrātṝṇāṃ tvaritās te tu draṣṭukāmāḥ samāgamam | yayur bahuvidhair yānaiḥ khuranemisamākulaiḥ

Eager to behold the brothers' meeting, they hastened in vehicles of many kinds, thick with the din of hooves and wheel-rims.

  40. Verse 40

sā bhūmir bahubhir yānaiḥ khuranemisamāhatā | mumoca tumulaṃ śabdaṃ dyaur ivābhrasamāgame

That ground, struck by the many vehicles' hooves and wheel-rims, let forth a tumultuous sound, as the sky does at the gathering of clouds.

  41. Verse 41

tena vitrāsitā nāgāḥ kareṇuparivāritāḥ | āvāsayanto gandhena jagmur anyad vanaṃ tataḥ

Terrified by it, the elephants, surrounded by their cow-elephants, scenting the air with their fragrance, went thence to another wood.

  42. Verse 42

varāhamṛgasiṃhāś ca mahiṣāḥ sarkṣavānarāḥ | vyāghra gokarṇagavayā vitreṣuḥ pṛṣataiḥ saha

Boars, deer, and lions, buffaloes with bears and monkeys, tigers, gokarṇas, and gavayas took fright along with the spotted deer.

  43. Verse 43

rathāṅgasāhvā natyūhā haṃsāḥ kāraṇḍavāḥ plavāḥ | tathā puṃskokilāḥ krauñcā visaṃjñā bhejire diśaḥ

The cakravākas (rathāṅga-named), the waterfowl, swans, karaṇḍavas, and coots, and likewise the cuckoos and curlews, bewildered, fled to every quarter.

  44. Verse 44

tena śabdena vitrastair ākāśaṃ pakṣibhir vṛtam | manuṣyair āvṛtā bhūmir ubhayaṃ prababhau tadā

With birds terrified by that sound the sky was covered, and with men the earth; and both then shone resplendent.

  45. Verse 45

tān narān bāṣpapūrṇākṣān samīkṣyātha suduḥkhitān | paryaṣvajata dharmajñaḥ pitṛvan mātṛvac ca saḥ

Seeing those men, their eyes brimming with tears and sore grieved, the knower of dharma embraced them, as a father and a mother would.

  46. Verse 46

sa tatra kāṃś cit pariṣasvaje narān; narāś ca ke cit tu tam abhyavādayan | cakāra sarvān savayasyabāndhavān; yathārham āsādya tadā nṛpātmajaḥ

There he embraced some of the men, and some of the men saluted him; and the prince, meeting them, treated them all, with their comrades and kinsmen, as each deserved.

  47. Verse 47

tataḥ sa teṣāṃ rudatāṃ mahātmanāṃ; bhuvaṃ ca khaṃ cānuvinādayan svanaḥ | guhā girīṇāṃ ca diśaś ca saṃtataṃ; mṛdaṅgaghoṣapratimo viśuśruve

Then the sound of those great souls weeping, making earth and sky resound, re-echoing without cease through the caves of the mountains and the quarters, was heard like the roll of a mṛdaṅga drum.
