Verse 1
tāṃ tathā garhayitvā tu mātaraṃ bharatas tadā | roṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭaḥ punar evābravīd vacaḥ
Having thus reproached his mother, Bharata then, filled with a mighty wrath, spoke yet again:
Verse 2
rājyād bhraṃśasva kaikeyi nṛśaṃse duṣṭacāriṇi | parityaktā ca dharmeṇa mā mṛtaṃ rudatī bhava
"Fall from the kingdom, Kaikeyi, you cruel and evil-doing woman; forsaken by righteousness, weep rather for the dead."
Verse 3
kiṃ nu te 'dūṣayad rājā rāmo vā bhṛśadhārmikaḥ | yayor mṛtyur vivāsaś ca tvatkṛte tulyam āgatau
"What wrong did the king do you, or Rama of surpassing righteousness, that both death and banishment have come alike upon them through your doing?"
Verse 4
bhrūṇahatyām asi prāptā kulasyāsya vināśanāt | kaikeyi narakaṃ gaccha mā ca bhartuḥ salokatām
"You have brought upon yourself the guilt of slaying an unborn child, by the destruction of this house. Go to hell, Kaikeyi, and share not your husband's world."
Verse 5
yat tvayā hīdṛśaṃ pāpaṃ kṛtaṃ ghoreṇa karmaṇā | sarvalokapriyaṃ hitvā mamāpy āpāditaṃ bhayam
"For that you have done so dreadful a sin by this terrible deed, casting aside one dear to all the world, you have brought peril upon me too."
Verse 6
tvatkṛte me pitā vṛtto rāmaś cāraṇyam āśritaḥ | ayaśo jīvaloke ca tvayāhaṃ pratipāditaḥ
"Through your doing my father is dead and Rama has betaken himself to the forest; and in the world of the living you have fastened infamy upon me."
Verse 7
"O foe of mine in a mother's shape, cruel one, lusting after the kingdom, you are not to be spoken to by me, you of evil conduct, you slayer of your husband."
Verse 8
kausalyā ca sumitrā ca yāś cānyā mama mātaraḥ | duḥkhena mahatāviṣṭās tvāṃ prāpya kuladūṣiṇīm
"Kausalya and Sumitra and my other mothers are seized with great grief, having got you, the defiler of the house."
Verse 9
na tvam aśvapateḥ kanyā dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ | rākṣasī tatra jātāsi kulapradhvaṃsinī pituḥ
"You are no daughter of Ashvapati, that wise king of righteousness; a demoness were you born there, the destroyer of your father's line."
Verse 10
yat tvayā dhārmiko rāmo nityaṃ satyaparāyaṇaḥ | vanaṃ prasthāpito duḥkhāt pitā ca tridivaṃ gataḥ
"In that you have sent the righteous Rama, ever bent on truth, to the forest in sorrow, and have sent your husband to the heavens —"
Verse 11
yat pradhānāsi tat pāpaṃ mayi pitrā vinākṛte | bhrātṛbhyāṃ ca parityakte sarvalokasya cāpriye
"this is the chief of your sins: that I am left without my father, forsaken by my two brothers, and hateful to all the world."
Verse 12
kausalyāṃ dharmasaṃyuktāṃ viyuktāṃ pāpaniścaye | kṛtvā kaṃ prāpsyase tv adya lokaṃ nirayagāminī
"Having set Kausalya, joined to righteousness, apart from the king by your wicked resolve, what world shall you win today, you who are bound for hell?"
Verse 13
kiṃ nāvabudhyase krūre niyataṃ bandhusaṃśrayam | jyeṣṭhaṃ pitṛsamaṃ rāmaṃ kausalyāyātmasaṃbhavam
"Why do you not understand, cruel one, that Rama, the eldest, like a father, Kausalya's own offspring, was the sure refuge of his kinsmen?"
Verse 14
aṅgapratyaṅgajaḥ putro hṛdayāc cāpi jāyate | tasmāt priyataro mātuḥ priyatvān na tu bāndhavaḥ
"A son is born of the limbs and from the very heart of his mother; therefore is he dearer to a mother out of that love than any other kinsman."
Verse 15
anyadā kila dharmajñā surabhiḥ surasaṃmatā | vahamānau dadarśorvyāṃ putrau vigatacetasau
"Once, it is said, the cow Surabhi, knower of righteousness, honoured by the gods, beheld upon the earth two of her sons fallen senseless."
Verse 16
tāv ardhadivase śrāntau dṛṣṭvā putrau mahītale | ruroda putra śokena bāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇā
"Seeing those two sons wearied upon the ground at midday, she wept for grief at her sons, her eyes brimming with tears."
Verse 17
adhastād vrajatas tasyāḥ surarājño mahātmanaḥ | bindavaḥ patitā gātre sūkṣmāḥ surabhigandhinaḥ
"As she passed below, upon the body of the great-souled king of the gods there fell tiny drops, fragrant with her sweet scent."
Verse 18
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā śokasaṃtaptāṃ vajrapāṇir yaśasvinīm | indraḥ prāñjalir udvignaḥ surarājo 'bravīd vacaḥ
"Seeing her, the illustrious one, consumed with grief, Indra of the thunderbolt, king of the gods, troubled, with hands joined, spoke this word:"
Verse 19
bhayaṃ kaccin na cāsmāsu kutaś cid vidyate mahat | kuto nimittaḥ śokas te brūhi sarvahitaiṣiṇi
"'Is there no great danger threatening us from any quarter? From what cause is your grief? Tell me, you who wish the good of all.'"
Verse 20
evam uktā tu surabhiḥ surarājena dhīmatā | patyuvāca tato dhīrā vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradā
Thus addressed by the wise king of the gods, Surabhi, steadfast and skilled in speech, then answered him:
Verse 21
śāntaṃ pātaṃ na vaḥ kiṃ cit kutaś cid amarādhipa | ahaṃ tu magnau śocāmi svaputrau viṣame sthitau
"Peace be upon you; no mischief from any quarter befalls you, O lord of the immortals. But I grieve for my two sons, sunk in distress, set to a hard lot."
Verse 22
etau dṛṣṭvā kṛṣau dīnau sūryaraśmipratāpinau | vadhyamānau balīvardau karṣakeṇa surādhipa
"Seeing these two, lean and wretched, scorched by the sun's rays, being beaten by the ploughman — these two bullocks, O lord of the gods —"
Verse 23
mama kāyāt prasūtau hi duḥkhitau bhāra pīḍitau | yau dṛṣṭvā paritapye 'haṃ nāsti putrasamaḥ priyaḥ
"born of my own body, suffering, oppressed by the load, seeing whom I am consumed with pain: there is nothing so dear as a son."
Verse 24
yasyāḥ putra sahasrāṇi sāpi śocati kāmadhuk | kiṃ punar yā vinā rāmaṃ kausalyā vartayiṣyati
"If even she, the wish-granting cow, whose sons are in their thousands, grieves thus — how much more will Kausalya go on living without Rama?"
Verse 25
ekaputrā ca sādhvī ca vivatseyaṃ tvayā kṛtā | tasmāt tvaṃ satataṃ duḥkhaṃ pretya ceha ca lapsyase
"A virtuous woman with but one son, she has been made childless by you; therefore shall you forever reap sorrow, both hereafter and here."
Verse 26
ahaṃ hy apacitiṃ bhrātuḥ pituś ca sakalām imām | vardhanaṃ yaśasaś cāpi kariṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ
"For I shall render all this reverence that is due to brother and to father, and I shall make his fame to grow — of this there is no doubt."
Verse 27
ānāyayitvā tanayaṃ kausalyāyā mahādyutim | svayam eva pravekṣyāmi vanaṃ muniniṣevitam
"Having had Kausalya's son of great splendour brought back, I shall myself enter the forest frequented by sages."
Verse 28
iti nāga ivāraṇye tomarāṅkuśacoditaḥ | papāta bhuvi saṃkruddho niḥśvasann iva pannagaḥ
Thus speaking, like an elephant in the forest goaded by lance and hook, he fell to the ground, enraged, hissing like a serpent.
Verse 29
saṃraktanetraḥ śithilāmbaras tadā; vidhūtasarvābharaṇaḥ paraṃtapaḥ | babhūva bhūmau patito nṛpātmajaḥ; śacīpateḥ ketur ivotsavakṣaye
With bloodshot eyes, his garments loose, all his ornaments cast off, that scorcher of foes, the prince, lay fallen upon the ground, like the banner of Indra at the ending of the festival.
