Thus questioned, Kaikeyi spoke the word according to truth: "The king, lamenting 'Rama! Alas, Sita! Lakshmana!' that great soul, best of those who go the good way, passed to the highest world."

"Where now is that righteous one, the increaser of Kausalya's joy, gone, together with his brother Lakshmana and with Sita?"

tathā pṛṣṭā yathātattvam ākhyātum upacakrame | mātāsya yugapad vākyaṃ vipriyaṃ priyaśaṅkayā
Thus questioned, his mother set about to tell him truly, but, under the guise of pleasant news, spoke at once a thing unwelcome:

Verse 37
kaccin na brāhmaṇavadhaṃ hṛtaṃ rāmeṇa kasya cit | kaccin nāḍhyo daridro vā tenāpāpo vihiṃsitaḥ
"Surely Rama has not carried off some brahmin's wealth? Surely he has done no harm to some innocent man, rich or poor?"
Verse 38
"Surely the prince has not cast eyes upon another's wife? Why was he banished to the Dandaka forest, as if he had slain an unborn child?"
Verse 39

Verse 40

"Rama has carried off no brahmin's wealth from anyone; no innocent man, rich or poor, has been harmed by him; nor does Rama look even with his eyes upon another's wife."

"But I, my son, hearing of the very consecration of Rama, asked of your father the kingdom for you, and the banishment of Rama."

"Holding to his own way of truth, your father did even so; and Rama, together with the son of Sumitra, was sent away with Sita."
Verse 43

"Not seeing his dear son, the illustrious lord of the earth, worn down by grief for his son, met his death."

tat putra śīghraṃ vidhinā vidhijñair; vasiṣṭhamukhyaiḥ sahito dvijendraiḥ | saṃkālya rājānam adīnasattvam; ātmānam urvyām abhiṣecayasva
"So, my son, in due form, together with the lords of the twice-born headed by Vasishtha who know the rites, perform the king's obsequies, and, undaunted in spirit, consecrate yourself as king over the earth."
