True to his word, pure and glorious, gazing upon the Shilavaha, he passed beyond the great mountains toward the Chaitraratha forest.

  4. Verse 4

"This Ayodhya, charioteer, famed for her holy gardens, pale-earthed, does not appear to me as she was wont; seen from afar, she is not clear to my sight."

  20. Verse 20

  23. Verse 23

But he, his heart distracted, having returned the greeting of those gatekeepers, said then to the wearied charioteer of Ashvapati, the Raghava:

  24. Verse 24

śrutā no yādṛśāḥ pūrvaṃ nṛpatīnāṃ vināśane | ākārās tān ahaṃ sarvān iha paśyāmi sārathe

"Such tokens as we have heard of before at the death of kings — all those I behold here, charioteer."

  25. Verse 25

"I see the people of the city, both women and men, soiled, their eyes full of tears, wretched, sunk in brooding, wasted away, and full of longing."

  26. Verse 26

ity evam uktvā bharataḥ sūtaṃ taṃ dīnamānasaḥ | tāny aniṣṭāny ayodhyāyāṃ prekṣya rājagṛhaṃ yayau

Having thus spoken to the charioteer, Bharata, downcast in heart, beholding those unwelcome signs in Ayodhya, went on to the royal palace.

  27. Verse 27

tāṃ śūnyaśṛṅgāṭakaveśmarathyāṃ; rajo'ruṇadvārakapāṭayantrām | dṛṣṭvā purīm indrapurī prakāśāṃ; duḥkhena saṃpūrṇataro babhūva

Seeing the city, once bright as the city of Indra, now with its squares and houses and roads deserted, its gates and door-panels reddened with dust, he grew yet more filled with grief.

  28. Verse 28

bahūni paśyan manaso 'priyāṇi; yāny annyadā nāsya pure babhūvuḥ | avākśirā dīnamanā nahṛṣṭaḥ; pitur mahātmā praviveśa veśma

Beholding many things unwelcome to the mind, such as had never been in his city before, with bowed head and downcast heart, joyless, that great-souled one entered his father's dwelling.
