kathayitvā suduḥkhārtaḥ sumantreṇa ciraṃ saha | rāme dakṣiṇa kūlasthe jagāma svagṛhaṃ guhaḥ

Having conversed long and in great sorrow with Sumantra, Guha went to his own home, Rama being now upon the southern bank.

  2. Verse 2

anujñātaḥ sumantro 'tha yojayitvā hayottamān | ayodhyām eva nagarīṃ prayayau gāḍhadurmanāḥ

Then Sumantra, taking leave, having yoked the excellent horses, went on to the city of Ayodhya, deeply downcast.

  3. Verse 3

sa vanāni sugandhīni saritaś ca sarāṃsi ca | paśyann atiyayau śīghraṃ grāmāṇi nagarāṇi ca

Beholding the fragrant woodlands, the rivers and the lakes, he passed swiftly on by villages and towns.

tataḥ sāyāhnasamaye tṛtīye 'hani sārathiḥ | ayodhyāṃ samanuprāpya nirānandāṃ dadarśa ha

Then at the hour of evening on the third day the charioteer, reaching Ayodhya, beheld her bereft of joy.

  5. Verse 5

sa śūnyām iva niḥśabdāṃ dṛṣṭvā paramadurmanāḥ | sumantraś cintayām āsa śokavegasamāhataḥ

Seeing her as if empty and silent, utterly downcast, Sumantra, smitten by the force of grief, fell to musing:

  6. Verse 6

kaccin na sagajā sāśvā sajanā sajanādhipā | rāma saṃtāpaduḥkhena dagdhā śokāgninā purī | iti cintāparaḥ sūtas tvaritaḥ praviveśa ha

"Is the city, with its elephants and horses, its people and their lord, burnt up with the fire of grief, by the sorrow and anguish for Rama?"—so musing, the charioteer entered in haste.

  7. Verse 7

sumantram abhiyāntaṃ taṃ śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ | kva rāma iti pṛcchantaḥ sūtam abhyadravan narāḥ

As Sumantra came on, men by hundreds and by thousands, asking "Where is Rama?", ran up to the charioteer.

To them he said: "Having taken leave of Raghava at the Ganga, I am come back, dismissed by that righteous great soul."

  9. Verse 9

te tīrṇā iti vijñāya bāṣpapūrṇamukhā janāḥ | aho dhig iti niḥśvasya hā rāmeti ca cukruśuḥ

Knowing them crossed over, the people, their faces full of tears, sighing "Alas, shame!" and crying "Alas, Rama!"

  10. Verse 10

śuśrāva ca vacas teṣāṃ vṛndaṃ vṛndaṃ ca tiṣṭhatām | hatāḥ sma khalu ye neha paśyāma iti rāghavam

And he heard the words of those who stood in troop after troop: "Slain indeed are we, who shall not behold Raghava here—

  11. Verse 11

at giving of gifts, at sacrifices, at marriages, and at great assemblies—nevermore shall we see the righteous Rama among us."

  12. Verse 12

kiṃ samarthaṃ janasyāsya kiṃ priyaṃ kiṃ sukhāvaham | iti rāmeṇa nagaraṃ pitṛvat paripālitam

"What is fitting for this folk? what dear to them? what brings them comfort?"—so by Rama had the city been cherished, like a father.

  13. Verse 13

vātāyanagatānāṃ ca strīṇām anvantarāpaṇam | rāmaśokābhitaptānāṃ śuśrāva paridevanam

And from the women set at their windows along the row of shops, afflicted with grief for Rama, he heard lamentation.

Sumantra, his face veiled, by the middle of the royal highway, went on to that very house where King Dasharatha was.

Alighting quickly from the chariot and entering the royal dwelling, he passed through the seven courtyards thronged with a great multitude.

Then from the palaces here and there of the women of Dasharatha, afflicted with grief for Rama, he heard low murmuring:

  17. Verse 17

"He who set forth with Rama is come back here without Rama; what then will the charioteer answer to the grieving Kausalya?

  18. Verse 18

As I think it, hard is it to live, yet surely not easy, there where Kausalya lives on, her son torn from her and gone."

  19. Verse 19

Hearing those true-seeming words of the king's women, as if ablaze with grief, he entered the dwelling in haste.

  22. Verse 22

sa tūṣṇīm eva tac chrutvā rājā vibhrānta cetanaḥ | mūrchito nyapatad bhūmau rāmaśokābhipīḍitaḥ

The king, hearing it in silence, his mind reeling, fell swooning to the ground, stricken with grief for Rama.

  23. Verse 23

tato 'ntaḥpuram āviddhaṃ mūrchite pṛthivīpatau | uddhṛtya bāhū cukrośa nṛpatau patite kṣitau

Then the inner household was thrown into tumult, the lord of the earth lying in a swoon; raising their arms, they cried aloud, the king fallen upon the earth.

  26. Verse 26

Having today wrought this wrong, are you ashamed, O Raghava? Rise; may it be well with you; grief brings no help.

O lord, you ask not the charioteer for news of Rama, for fear of her, of Kaikeyi; here she is not; let him be answered freely."

  28. Verse 28

sā tathoktvā mahārājaṃ kausalyā śokalālasā | dharaṇyāṃ nipapātāśu bāṣpaviplutabhāṣiṇī

Having thus spoken to the great king, Kausalya, overcome with grief, fell straightway to the ground, her speech drowned in tears.

  29. Verse 29

evaṃ vilapatīṃ dṛṣṭvā kausalyāṃ patitāṃ bhuvi | patiṃ cāvekṣya tāḥ sarvāḥ sasvaraṃ ruruduḥ striyaḥ

Seeing Kausalya lamenting thus, fallen upon the earth, and looking upon her husband, all the women wept aloud with loud voices.

  30. Verse 30

Then, beholding that cry risen up in the inner apartments, the old men and the young, and all the women, wept on every side; and the city then was once more thrown into confusion.
