  1. Verse 1

vilapantīṃ tathā tāṃ tu kausalyāṃ pramadottamām | idaṃ dharme sthitā dharmyaṃ sumitrā vākyam abravīt

As Kausalya, best of women, lamented thus, the righteous Sumitra, firm in righteousness, spoke these fitting words:

  2. Verse 2

"Your son, O noble lady, is endowed with every excellence, that best of men; what avails you this lamenting and this wretched weeping?

  3. Verse 3

yas tavārye gataḥ putras tyaktvā rājyaṃ mahābalaḥ | sādhu kurvan mahātmānaṃ pitaraṃ satyavādinām

He who, your son, O noble lady, has gone forth renouncing the kingdom, that one of great strength—doing good, making true his great-souled and truthful father—

  4. Verse 4

śiṣṭair ācarite samyak śaśvat pretya phalodaye | rāmo dharme sthitaḥ śreṣṭho na sa śocyaḥ kadā cana

Rama, firm in the righteousness rightly practised by the good, ever bringing its fruit hereafter, the most excellent—he is never to be grieved for.

  5. Verse 5

vartate cottamāṃ vṛttiṃ lakṣmaṇo 'smin sadānaghaḥ | dayāvān sarvabhūteṣu lābhas tasya mahātmanaḥ

And Lakshmana, ever sinless, maintains the highest conduct toward him, compassionate to all creatures; this is the gain of that great soul.

  6. Verse 6

araṇyavāse yad duḥkhaṃ jānatī vai sukhocitā | anugacchati vaidehī dharmātmānaṃ tavātmajam

Vaidehi, knowing well the sorrow of life in the wilderness, though used to comfort, follows the righteous one, your son.

  7. Verse 7

kīrtibhūtāṃ patākāṃ yo loke bhrāmayati prabhuḥ | damasatyavrataparaḥ kiṃ na prāptas tavātmajaḥ

Your son, who waves aloft in the world the banner of his glory, devoted to self-restraint and the vow of truth—what has he not attained?

  8. Verse 8

vyaktaṃ rāmasya vijñāya śaucaṃ māhātmyam uttamam | na gātram aṃśubhiḥ sūryaḥ saṃtāpayitum arhati

Knowing clearly the purity and surpassing greatness of soul of Rama, the sun will not venture to scorch his body with his beams.

  9. Verse 9

śivaḥ sarveṣu kāleṣu kānanebhyo viniḥsṛtaḥ | rāghavaṃ yuktaśītoṣṇaḥ seviṣyati sukho 'nilaḥ

Auspicious at all seasons, issuing from the woodlands, the breeze, tempered of heat and cold, will wait upon Raghava with comfort.

  10. Verse 10

śayānam anaghaṃ rātrau pitevābhipariṣvajan | raśmibhiḥ saṃspṛśañ śītaiś candramā hlādayiṣyati

As he lies at night, sinless, the moon, embracing him like a father, touching him with cool rays, will bring him delight.

  11. Verse 11

dadau cāstrāṇi divyāni yasmai brahmā mahaujase | dānavendraṃ hataṃ dṛṣṭvā timidhvajasutaṃ raṇe

He to whom Brahma gave celestial weapons—to that one of mighty valour, when he beheld the lord of the danavas, the son of Timidhvaja, slain in battle—

  12. Verse 12

pṛthivyā saha vaidehyā śriyā ca puruṣarṣabhaḥ | kṣipraṃ tisṛbhir etābhiḥ saha rāmo 'bhiṣekṣyate

that bull among men, Rama, will soon be anointed together with these three: with the earth, with Vaidehi, and with Royal Fortune.

  13. Verse 13

duḥkhajaṃ visṛjanty asraṃ niṣkrāmantam udīkṣya yam | samutsrakṣyasi netrābhyāṃ kṣipram ānandajaṃ payaḥ

When you beheld him departing, shedding tears born of grief—soon from your two eyes you will pour forth instead the water born of joy.

  14. Verse 14

abhivādayamānaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā sasuhṛdaṃ sutam | mudāśru mokṣyase kṣipraṃ meghalekeva vārṣikī

Beholding your son returned and saluting you with his friends, you will quickly let fall tears of gladness, like a streak of cloud in the rainy season.

  15. Verse 15

putras te varadaḥ kṣipram ayodhyāṃ punar āgataḥ | karābhyāṃ mṛdupīnābhyāṃ caraṇau pīḍayiṣyati

Your son, the giver of boons, soon come back to Ayodhya, will press your feet with his soft and well-filled hands.

  16. Verse 16

niśamya tal lakṣmaṇamātṛvākyaṃ; rāmasya mātur naradevapatnyāḥ | sadyaḥ śarīre vinanāśa śokaḥ; śaradgato megha ivālpatoyaḥ

Hearing those words of the mother of Lakshmana, the grief straightway vanished from the body of Rama's mother, the king's consort, as a cloud of little water vanishes when autumn has come.
