  1. Verse 1

mahāmātravacaḥ śrutvā rāmo daśarathaṃ tadā | anvabhāṣata vākyaṃ tu vinayajño vinītavat

Having heard the minister's words, Rama then answered Dasharatha, knowing the ways of discipline, with words full of humility:

  2. Verse 2

tyaktabhogasya me rājan vane vanyena jīvataḥ | kiṃ kāryam anuyātreṇa tyaktasaṅgasya sarvataḥ

"For me, O king, who have renounced enjoyments, who shall live in the forest on forest fare, and who have cast off all attachment utterly—what need is there of a following retinue?

  3. Verse 3

yo hi dattvā dvipaśreṣṭhaṃ kakṣyāyāṃ kurute manaḥ | rajjusnehena kiṃ tasya tyajataḥ kuñjarottamam

For one who, having given away the best of elephants, yet sets his heart upon its tether—what use to him is love of the rope, when he lets the noble elephant go?

  4. Verse 4

tathā mama satāṃ śreṣṭha kiṃ dhvajinyā jagatpate | sarvāṇy evānujānāmi cīrāṇy evānayantu me

So too for me, O best of the good, what use is an army with its banners, O lord of the world? I resign all these; let them bring me only bark garments.

  5. Verse 5

khanitrapiṭake cobhe mamānayata gacchataḥ | caturdaśa vane vāsaṃ varṣāṇi vasato mama

And bring me, as I depart, both a spade and a basket, for the fourteen years that I am to dwell in the forest."

  6. Verse 6

atha cīrāṇi kaikeyī svayam āhṛtya rāghavam | uvāca paridhatsveti janaughe nirapatrapā

Then Kaikeyi herself, fetching the bark garments, said to Raghava, shameless before the assembled throng, "Put these on."

  7. Verse 7

The tiger among men took those bark garments from Kaikeyi, and casting off his fine raiment, put on the garb of a sage.

  8. Verse 8

lakṣmaṇaś cāpi tatraiva vihāya vasane śubhe | tāpasāc chādane caiva jagrāha pitur agrataḥ

And Lakshmana too, right there, laid aside his fair robes and took the ascetic's dress before his father.

  9. Verse 9

athātmaparidhānārthaṃ sītā kauśeyavāsinī | samīkṣya cīraṃ saṃtrastā pṛṣatī vāgurām iva

Then, to wrap about herself, Sita, clad in silk, looking upon the bark garment, trembled like a doe before a snare.

  10. Verse 10

sā vyapatrapamāṇeva pratigṛhya ca durmanāḥ | gandharvarājapratimaṃ bhartāram idam abravīt | kathaṃ nu cīraṃ badhnanti munayo vanavāsinaḥ

Abashed and low in spirit, taking it up, she spoke thus to her husband, who was like the king of the gandharvas: "How then do the sages who dwell in the forest bind on the bark?"

  11. Verse 11

kṛtvā kaṇṭhe ca sā cīram ekam ādāya pāṇinā | tasthau hy akuṣalā tatra vrīḍitā janakātmaja

And tying one bark garment about her neck and taking another in her hand, Janaka's daughter stood there bewildered and abashed, not knowing how.

  12. Verse 12

tasyās tat kṣipram āgamya rāmo dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ | cīraṃ babandha sītāyāḥ kauśeyasyopari svayam

Coming quickly to her, Rama, best of the upholders of righteousness, himself bound the bark garment of Sita over her silken robe.

  13. Verse 13

tasyāṃ cīraṃ vasānāyāṃ nāthavatyām anāthavat | pracukrośa janaḥ sarvo dhik tvāṃ daśarathaṃ tv iti

As she, who had a protector, put on the bark like one who had none, all the people cried out, "Shame on you, Dasharatha!"

  14. Verse 14

Sighing hotly, the Ikshvaku king said to his wife: "Kaikeyi, Sita does not deserve to go in bark of kusha grass.

  15. Verse 15

nanu paryāptam etat te pāpe rāmavivāsanam | kim ebhiḥ kṛpaṇair bhūyaḥ pātakair api te kṛtaiḥ

Was the banishing of Rama not enough for you, O wicked woman? Why these further wretched sins that you have done?"

  16. Verse 16

evaṃ bruvantaṃ pitaraṃ rāmaḥ saṃprasthito vanam | avākśirasam āsīnam idaṃ vacanam abravīt

As his father spoke thus, Rama, setting out for the forest, said these words to the king, who sat with his head bowed down:

  17. Verse 17

iyaṃ dhārmika kausalyā mama mātā yaśasvinī | vṛddhā cākṣudraśīlā ca na ca tvāṃ devagarhite

"This, my glorious mother Kausalya, O righteous one, is aged and of no mean character, and she does not reproach you, O you whom the gods revere.

  18. Verse 18

mayā vihīnāṃ varada prapannāṃ śokasāgaram | adṛṣṭapūrvavyasanāṃ bhūyaḥ saṃmantum arhasi

Bereft of me, O giver of boons, plunged into an ocean of grief, having known no such calamity before—you ought to show her the greater honour.

  19. Verse 19

imāṃ mahendropamajātagarbhiṇīṃ; tathā vidhātuṃ janamīṃ mamārhasi | yathā vanasthe mayi śokakarśitā; na jīvitaṃ nyasya yamakṣayaṃ vrajet

You ought so to cherish my mother, who bore a son like great Indra, that, worn by grief while I dwell in the forest, she may not yield up her life and go to the realm of Yama."
