Verse 1
pratiprayāte bharate vasan rāmas tapovane | lakṣayām āsa sodvegam athautsukyaṃ tapasvinām
When Bharata had gone back, Rāma, dwelling in the penance-grove, perceived the agitation and the anxiety of the ascetics.
Verse 2
ye tatra citrakūṭasya purastāt tāpasāśrame | rāmam āśritya niratās tān alakṣayad utsukān
Those who there, in the ascetics' hermitage before Citrakūṭa, having resorted to Rāma, had been content — them he now perceived uneasy.
Verse 3
nayanair bhṛkuṭībhiś ca rāmaṃ nirdiśya śaṅkitāḥ | anyonyam upajalpantaḥ śanaiś cakrur mithaḥ kathāḥ
With their eyes and knitted brows, pointing at Rāma, apprehensive, murmuring to one another, they softly held converse among themselves.
Verse 4
teṣām autsukyam ālakṣya rāmas tv ātmani śaṅkitaḥ | kṛtāñjalir uvācedam ṛṣiṃ kulapatiṃ tataḥ
Noticing their anxiety, Rāma, himself misgiving, with folded hands then said this to the sage, the head of the community:
Verse 5
na kaccid bhagavan kiṃ cit pūrvavṛttam idaṃ mayi | dṛśyate vikṛtaṃ yena vikriyante tapasvinaḥ
"Is there not, reverend one, something of my former conduct seen as amiss in me, whereby the ascetics are disturbed?
Verse 6
pramādāc caritaṃ kaccit kiṃ cin nāvarajasya me | lakṣmaṇasyarṣibhir dṛṣṭaṃ nānurūpam ivātmanaḥ
Has some unseemly act been done, through heedlessness, by my younger brother Lakṣmaṇa, seen by the sages as unbecoming of him?
Verse 7
kaccic chuśrūṣamāṇā vaḥ śuśrūṣaṇaparā mayi | pramadābhyucitāṃ vṛttiṃ sītā yuktaṃ na vartate
Does Sītā, who serves you and is devoted to serving me, perhaps fail to bear herself in the manner befitting a gentle lady?"
Verse 8
atharṣir jarayā vṛddhas tapasā ca jarāṃ gataḥ | vepamāna ivovāca rāmaṃ bhūtadayāparam
Then the sage, aged with years and by austerity come to age, as if trembling, said to Rāma, who was intent on compassion for all beings:
Verse 9
kutaḥ kalyāṇasattvāyāḥ kalyāṇābhirates tathā | calanaṃ tāta vaidehyās tapasviṣu viśeṣataḥ
"Whence, dear one, could there be any wavering of Vaidehī, of auspicious nature, devoted to the auspicious — especially toward the ascetics?
Verse 10
tvannimittam idaṃ tāvat tāpasān prati vartate | rakṣobhyas tena saṃvignāḥ kathayanti mithaḥ kathāḥ
This that befalls the ascetics is, moreover, on your account; distressed by the rākṣasas because of it, they whisper among themselves.
Verse 11
rāvaṇāvarajaḥ kaś cit kharo nāmeha rākṣasaḥ | utpāṭya tāpasān sarvāñ janasthānaniketanān
There is here a certain rākṣasa named Khara, the younger brother of Rāvaṇa, who, uprooting all the ascetics that dwell in Janasthāna —
Verse 12
dhṛṣṭaś ca jitakāśī ca nṛśaṃsaḥ puruṣādakaḥ | avaliptaś ca pāpaś ca tvāṃ ca tāta na mṛṣyate
insolent and flushed with victory, cruel, a man-eater, arrogant and wicked — does not brook you, dear one.
Verse 13
tvaṃ yadā prabhṛti hy asminn āśrame tāta vartase | tadā prabhṛti rakṣāṃsi viprakurvanti tāpasān
From the day, dear one, that you have dwelt in this hermitage — from that day the rākṣasas have harassed the ascetics.
Verse 14
darśayanti hi bībhatsaiḥ krūrair bhīṣaṇakair api | nānā rūpair virūpaiś ca rūpair asukhadarśanaiḥ
For they show themselves in loathsome, cruel, and terrifying guises, of sundry misshapen shapes, forms unpleasant to behold;
Verse 15
apraśastair aśucibhiḥ saṃprayojya ca tāpasān | pratighnanty aparān kṣipram anāryāḥ purataḥ sthitaḥ
and, bringing things impure and unholy into contact with the ascetics, the ignoble ones, standing before them, quickly strike down some of them.
Verse 16
teṣu teṣv āśramasthāneṣv abuddham avalīya ca | ramante tāpasāṃs tatra nāśayanto 'lpacetasaḥ
Lurking unseen in those various hermitage-sites, they take their sport there, destroying the ascetics, who are of little strength.
Verse 17
apakṣipanti srugbhāṇḍān agnīn siñcanti vāriṇā | kalaśāṃś ca pramṛdnanti havane samupasthite
They cast away the sacrificial ladles and vessels, drench the fires with water, and smash the pots when the oblation is at hand.
Verse 18
tair durātmabhir āviṣṭān āśramān prajihāsavaḥ | gamanāyānyadeśasya codayanty ṛṣayo 'dya mām
With their hermitages beset by those evil ones, the sages, wishing to depart, now urge me to go away to another region.
Verse 19
tat purā rāma śārīrām upahiṃsāṃ tapasviṣu | darśayati hi duṣṭās te tyakṣyāma imam āśramam
Therefore, Rāma, before those wicked ones work bodily harm upon the ascetics — for so they threaten — we shall forsake this hermitage.
Verse 20
bahumūlaphalaṃ citram avidūrād ito vanam | purāṇāśramam evāhaṃ śrayiṣye sagaṇaḥ punaḥ
I shall resort again, with my community, to my old hermitage — a wood not far from here, varied and rich in roots and fruits.
Verse 21
kharas tvayy api cāyuktaṃ purā tāta pravartate | sahāsmābhir ito gaccha yadi buddhiḥ pravartate
Khara does wrong even toward you, dear one, henceforth; go you hence together with us, if such a mind should arise in you.
Verse 22
sakalatrasya saṃdeho nityaṃ yat tasya rāghava | samarthasyāpi hi sato vāso duḥkha ihādya te
For your dwelling here now is painful, O Rāghava — you who have a wife; since for one who has a wife there is constant danger, even for one well able to defend himself."
Verse 23
ity uktavantaṃ rāmas taṃ rājaputras tapasvinam | na śaśākottarair vākyair avaroddhuṃ samutsukam
Rāma the prince could not, with words of reply, hold back that ascetic who had thus spoken and was eager to go.
Verse 24
abhinandya samāpṛcchya samādhāya ca rāghavam | sa jagāmāśramaṃ tyaktvā kulaiḥ kulapatiḥ saha
Having blessed, taken leave of, and reassured Rāghava, the community-head departed, forsaking the hermitage, together with his households.
Verse 25
rāmaḥ saṃsādhya tv ṛṣigaṇam anugamanād; deśāt tasmāccit kulapatim abhivādyarṣim | samyakprītais tair anumata upadiṣṭārthaḥ; puṇyaṃ vāsāya svanilayam upasaṃpede
Rāma, having sped the host of sages on their departure from that region, and having saluted the community-head sage, honored by those well-pleased ones and counseled in his course, returned to his own holy dwelling for his abode.
Verse 26
āśramaṃ tv ṛṣivirahitaṃ prabhuḥ; kṣaṇam api na jahau sa rāghavaḥ | rāghavaṃ hi satatam anugatās; tāpasāś carṣicaritadhṛtaguṇāḥ
But the lord Rāghava did not abandon, even for a moment, the hermitage now emptied of its sages; for ascetics who held fast the virtues of the seers' practice ever followed Rāghava.
