Verse 1
jābāles tu vacaḥ śrutvā rāmaḥ satyātmanāṃ varaḥ | uvāca parayā yuktyā svabuddhyā cāvipannayā
But hearing Jābāli's words, Rāma, best of the truthful-souled, replied, with supreme reasoning and with his own unfailing understanding:
Verse 2
bhavān me priyakāmārthaṃ vacanaṃ yad ihoktavān | akāryaṃ kāryasaṃkāśam apathyaṃ pathyasaṃmitam
"What you have here spoken, out of wish for my pleasure, is a thing-not-to-be-done wearing the semblance of a thing-to-be-done, unwholesome though it seem wholesome.
Verse 3
nirmaryādas tu puruṣaḥ pāpācārasamanvitaḥ | mānaṃ na labhate satsu bhinnacāritradarśanaḥ
A man without bounds of conduct, given over to sinful ways, seen to be broken in character, wins no honor among the good.
Verse 4
kulīnam akulīnaṃ vā vīraṃ puruṣamāninam | cāritram eva vyākhyāti śuciṃ vā yadi vāśucim
Whether a man be well-born or base-born, heroic or but self-conceited, pure or impure — his conduct alone proclaims him.
Verse 5
anārays tv ārya saṃkāśaḥ śaucād dhīnas tathā śuciḥ | lakṣaṇyavad alakṣaṇyo duḥśīlaḥ śīlavān iva
(By your doctrine) the ignoble would pass for the noble, the impure for the pure, the ill-marked for the auspicious, the ill-charactered for the virtuous.
Verse 6
adharmaṃ dharmaveṣeṇa yadīmaṃ lokasaṃkaram | abhipatsye śubhaṃ hitvā kriyāvidhivivarjitam
If, forsaking the good, I should embrace this unrighteousness clad in the garb of dharma — this confounder of the world, void of rite and rule —
Verse 7
kaś cetayānaḥ puruṣaḥ kāryākāryavicakṣaṇaḥ | bahu maṃsyati māṃ loke durvṛttaṃ lokadūṣaṇam
what thinking man, discerning the to-be-done from the not-to-be-done, would esteem me in the world — me of evil conduct, a defiler of the world?
Verse 8
kasya yāsyāmy ahaṃ vṛttaṃ kena vā svargam āpnuyām | anayā vartamāno 'haṃ vṛttyā hīnapratijñayā
Whose conduct should I then follow, or by what should I win heaven, were I to live by this course, with my pledge debased?
Verse 9
kāmavṛttas tv ayaṃ lokaḥ kṛtsnaḥ samupavartate | yadvṛttāḥ santi rājānas tadvṛttāḥ santi hi prajāḥ
This whole world, moreover, follows after its own desire (by the example set); for as the kings are in conduct, so too are the subjects.
Verse 10
satyam evānṛśaṃsyaṃ ca rājavṛttaṃ sanātanam | tasmāt satyātmakaṃ rājyaṃ satye lokaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ
Truth and non-cruelty — that is the eternal conduct of kings; therefore the kingdom has truth for its soul, and the world is established upon truth.
Verse 11
ṛṣayaś caiva devāś ca satyam eva hi menire | satyavādī hi loke 'smin paramaṃ gacchati kṣayam
The sages and the gods alike have esteemed truth alone; for a truth-speaker in this world attains the supreme imperishable state.
Verse 12
udvijante yathā sarpān narād anṛtavādinaḥ | dharmaḥ satyaṃ paro loke mūlaṃ svargasya cocyate
Men shrink from a liar as from serpents; dharma, that is truth, is supreme in the world, and is called the root of heaven.
Verse 13
satyam eveśvaro loke satyaṃ padmā samāśritā | satyamūlāni sarvāṇi satyān nāsti paraṃ padam
Truth is the lord in the world; upon truth does Padmā (Lakṣmī) rest; all things are rooted in truth; there is no state higher than truth.
Verse 14
dattam iṣṭaṃ hutaṃ caiva taptāni ca tapāṃsi ca | vedāḥ satyapratiṣṭhānās tasmāt satyaparo bhavet
Gift, sacrifice, oblation, the austerities performed, and the Vedas — all are founded upon truth; therefore one should hold truth supreme.
Verse 15
ekaḥ pālayate lokam ekaḥ pālayate kulam | majjaty eko hi niraya ekaḥ svarge mahīyate
By truth one upholds the world, by truth one upholds his family; by it a man alone sinks into hell, or alone is exalted in heaven.
The verse turns on truth and its keeping as the single ground of weal and woe.
Verse 16
so 'haṃ pitur nideśaṃ tu kimarthaṃ nānupālaye | satyapratiśravaḥ satyaṃ satyena samayīkṛtaḥ
How then should I not keep my father's command — I who have pledged truth, bound in truth by truth to the truth?
Verse 17
naiva lobhān na mohād vā na cājñānāt tamo'nvitaḥ | setuṃ satyasya bhetsyāmi guroḥ satyapratiśravaḥ
Neither from greed, nor delusion, nor ignorance clouded by darkness, shall I break the dike of truth; I stand pledged in truth to my elder.
Verse 18
asatyasaṃdhasya sataś calasyāsthiracetasaḥ | naiva devā na pitaraḥ pratīcchantīti naḥ śrutam
Of a man false to his pledge, fickle and unsteady of mind, neither the gods nor the ancestors accept the offerings — so have we heard.
Verse 19
pratyagātmam imaṃ dharmaṃ satyaṃ paśyāmy ahaṃ svayam | bhāraḥ satpuruṣācīrṇas tad artham abhinandyate
This dharma — truth — I myself behold as the inmost self; the burden borne by good men is for that reason gladly welcomed.
Verse 20
kṣātraṃ dharmam ahaṃ tyakṣye hy adharmaṃ dharmasaṃhitam | kṣudraur nṛśaṃsair lubdhaiś ca sevitaṃ pāpakarmabhiḥ
I would forsake even the kṣatriya's dharma, were it an unrighteousness clad as dharma, such as the base, the cruel, and the greedy, doers of sinful deeds, pursue.
Verse 21
kāyena kurute pāpaṃ manasā saṃpradhārya ca | anṛtaṃ jihvayā cāha trividhaṃ karma pātakam
By the body one does sin, having resolved it in the mind, and with the tongue one speaks untruth — threefold is the sinful deed.
Verse 22
bhūmiḥ kīrtir yaśo lakṣmīḥ puruṣaṃ prārthayanti hi | svargasthaṃ cānubadhnanti satyam eva bhajeta tat
Land, renown, fame, and fortune do indeed seek out the man of truth, and attend him even in heaven; one should hold therefore to truth alone.
Verse 23
śreṣṭhaṃ hy anāryam eva syād yad bhavān avadhārya mām | āha yuktikarair vākyair idaṃ bhadraṃ kuruṣva ha
What you, after weighing me, have told me in reasoning words — 'do this, it is good' — would be most ignoble indeed (were I to follow it).
Verse 24
kathaṃ hy ahaṃ pratijñāya vanavāsam imaṃ guroḥ | bharatasya kariṣyāmi vaco hitvā guror vacaḥ
For how, having promised this forest-dwelling to my elder, shall I do Bharata's word, casting aside my elder's word?
Verse 25
sthirā mayā pratijñātā pratijñā gurusaṃnidhau | prahṛṣṭamānasā devī kaikeyī cābhavat tadā
A firm pledge was pledged by me in my elder's presence; and Queen Kaikeyī then became glad of heart.
Verse 26
vanavāsaṃ vasann evaṃ śucir niyatabhojanaḥ | mūlaiḥ puṣpaiḥ phalaiḥ puṇyaiḥ pitṝn devāṃś ca tarpayan
Dwelling thus in the forest, pure, of regulated fare, gratifying the ancestors and the gods with roots, flowers, and holy fruits,
Verse 27
saṃtuṣṭapañcavargo 'haṃ lokayātrāṃ pravartaye | akuhaḥ śraddadhānaḥ san kāryākāryavicakṣaṇaḥ
content in the five senses, I shall carry on my course of life in the world — guileless, full of faith, discerning the to-be-done from the not-to-be-done.
Verse 28
karmabhūmim imāṃ prāpya kartavyaṃ karma yac chubham | agnir vāyuś ca somaś ca karmaṇāṃ phalabhāginaḥ
Having reached this field of action, one must do the deed that is auspicious; Agni, Vāyu, and Soma are sharers in the fruits of such deeds.
Verse 29
śataṃ kratūnām āhṛtya devarāṭ tridivaṃ gataḥ | tapāṃsy ugrāṇi cāsthāya divaṃ yātā maharṣayaḥ
Having performed a hundred sacrifices, the king of the gods went to the third heaven; and having undertaken fierce austerities, the great sages went to heaven.
Verse 30
satyaṃ ca dharmaṃ ca parākramaṃ ca; bhūtānukampāṃ priyavāditāṃ ca | dvijātidevātithipūjanaṃ ca; panthānam āhus tridivasya santaḥ
Truth, and dharma, and valor, and compassion for beings, and kindly speech, and the honoring of Brahmins, gods, and guests — this the good declare to be the path of heaven.
Verse 31
dharme ratāḥ satpuruṣaiḥ sametās; tejasvino dānaguṇapradhānāḥ | ahiṃsakā vītamalāś ca loke; bhavanti pūjyā munayaḥ pradhānāḥ
Devoted to dharma, in the fellowship of the good, splendid, pre-eminent in the virtue of giving, harmless and free of stain — such are the foremost sages, worthy of worship in the world."
