  1. Verse 1

    saṃjaya uvāca tasmiṃs tathā vartamāne karṇarākṣasayor mṛdhe alāyudho rākṣasendro vīryavān abhyavartata

    Sanjaya said: While that battle of Karṇa and the Rākṣasa (Ghaṭotkaca) was thus proceeding in the fray, the valorous lord of the Rākṣasas, Alāyudha, advanced.

  2. Verse 2

    mahatyā senayā yuktaḥ suyodhanam upāgamat rākṣasānāṃ virūpāṇāṃ sahasraiḥ parivāritaḥ nānārūpadharair vīraiḥ pūrvavairam anusmaran

    Joined with a great host, he approached Suyodhana (Duryodhana), surrounded by thousands of hideous Rākṣasas, heroes bearing various forms, remembering the old enmity.

  3. Verse 3

    tasya jñātir hi vikrānto brāhmaṇādo bako hataḥ kirmīraś ca mahātejā hiḍimbaś ca sakhā tathā

    For his kinsman, the valorous, brahmin-devouring Baka, had been slain, and the greatly energetic Kirmīra, and Hiḍimba his friend likewise.

  4. Verse 4

    sa dīrghakālādhyuṣitaṃ pūrvavairam anusmaran vijñāyaitan niśāyuddhaṃ jighāṃsur bhīmam āhave

    Remembering the enmity harboured for a long time, and learning of this night-battle, he wished to slay Bhīma in the fight.

  5. Verse 5

    sa matta iva mātaṅgaḥ saṃkruddha iva coragaḥ duryodhanam idaṃ vākyam abravīd yuddhalālasaḥ

    He, like a rutting elephant, like an enraged serpent, spoke these words to Duryodhana, eager for battle:

  6. Verse 6

    viditaṃ te mahārāja yathā bhīmena rākṣasāḥ hiḍimbabakakirmīrā nihatā mama bāndhavāḥ

    'It is known to thee, O great king, how by Bhīma my Rākṣasa kinsmen, Hiḍimba, Baka and Kirmīra, were slain.'

  7. Verse 7

    parāmarśaś ca kanyāyā hiḍimbāyāḥ kṛtaḥ purā kim anyad rākṣasān anyān asmāṃś ca paribhūya ha

    'And the outrage upon the maiden Hiḍimbā was committed of old — what more (need be said), having despised the other Rākṣasas and us as well?'

  8. Verse 8

    tam ahaṃ sagaṇaṃ rājan savājirathakuñjaram haiḍimbaṃ ca sahāmātyaṃ hantum abhyāgataḥ svayam

    'I have come, O king, myself to slay him with his troops, with his horses, chariots and elephants, and the son of Hiḍimbā (Ghaṭotkaca) with his counsellors.'

  9. Verse 9

    adya kuntīsutān sarvān vāsudevapurogamān hatvā saṃbhakṣayiṣyāmi sarvair anucaraiḥ saha nivāraya balaṃ sarvaṃ vayaṃ yotsyāma pāṇḍavān

    'This day, having slain all the sons of Kuntī, with Vāsudeva at their head, I shall devour them with all my followers; hold back the whole host; we shall fight the Pāṇḍavas.'

  10. Verse 10

    tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā hṛṣṭo duryodhanas tadā pratipūjyābravīd vākyaṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ

    Hearing that word of his, Duryodhana then, delighted, honouring him, spoke these words, surrounded by his brothers:

  11. Verse 11

    tvāṃ puraskṛtya sagaṇaṃ vayaṃ yotsyāmahe parān na hi vairāntamanasaḥ sthāsyanti mama sainikāḥ

    'Placing thee with thy troops in the van, we shall fight the foes; for my soldiers, their minds set on the end of the enmity, will (now) stand firm.'

  12. Verse 12

    evam astv iti rājānam uktvā rākṣasapuṃgavaḥ abhyayāt tvarito bhīmaṃ sahitaḥ puruṣāśanaiḥ

    Saying 'So be it' to the king, that bull among Rākṣasas swiftly advanced against Bhīma, together with the man-eaters.

  13. Verse 13

    dīpyamānena vapuṣā rathenādityavarcasā tādṛśenaiva rājendra yādṛśena ghaṭotkacaḥ

    With a blazing body and a chariot of the splendour of the sun, O king of kings, of such a kind as was Ghaṭotkaca's,

  14. Verse 14

    तस्याप्य् अतुलनिर्घोषो बहुतोरणचित्रितः ऋक्षचर्मावनद्धाङ्गो नल्वमात्रो महारथः

    tasyāpy atulanirghoṣo bahutoraṇacitritaḥ ṛkṣacarmāvanaddhāṅgo nalvamātro mahārathaḥ

    his (chariot) too of matchless roar, variegated with many arches, its body covered with bear-skin, of the measure of a nalva, a great chariot;

    उसका भी (रथ) अतुल घोषवाला, बहुत से तोरणों से चित्रित, भालू के चर्म से ढँके शरीरवाला, नल्व-प्रमाण एक महान रथ था;

  15. Verse 15

    तस्यापि तुरगाः शीघ्रा हस्तिकायाः खरस्वनाः शतं युक्ता महाकाया मांसशोणितभोजनाः

    tasyāpi turagāḥ śīghrā hastikāyāḥ kharasvanāḥ śataṃ yuktā mahākāyā māṃsaśoṇitabhojanāḥ

    his steeds too were swift, elephant-bodied, ass-voiced, a hundred yoked, huge-bodied, feeding on flesh and blood;

    उसके भी घोड़े तीव्र, हाथी के समान शरीरवाले, गधे के समान स्वरवाले, सौ की संख्या में जुते हुए, विशालकाय, माँस और रक्त का भोजन करनेवाले थे;

  16. Verse 16

    तस्यापि रथनिर्घोषो महामेघरवोपमः तस्यापि सुमहच् चापं दृढज्यं बलवत्तरम्

    tasyāpi rathanirghoṣo mahāmegharavopamaḥ tasyāpi sumahac cāpaṃ dṛḍhajyaṃ balavattaram

    the rattle of his chariot too was like the roar of a great cloud; his bow too was very great, firm-stringed, most mighty;

    उसके रथ का घोष भी महान मेघ की गर्जना के समान था; उसका भी अत्यन्त विशाल, दृढ़ प्रत्यञ्चावाला, अत्यन्त बलवान धनुष था;

  17. Verse 17

    tasyāpy akṣasamā bāṇā rukmapuṅkhāḥ śilāśitāḥ so 'pi vīro mahābāhur yathaiva sa ghaṭotkacaḥ

    his arrows too were as large as axles, gold-nocked, stone-whetted; and he too was a hero, mighty-armed, even as that Ghaṭotkaca.

  18. Verse 18

    tasyāpi gomāyubaḍābhigupto; babhūva ketur jvalanārkatulyaḥ sa cāpi rūpeṇa ghaṭotkacasya; śrīmattamo vyākuladīpitāsyaḥ

    His banner too, guarded by (devices of) jackals and cranes, blazed like fire or the sun; and he too, in form, was most resplendent, like Ghaṭotkaca, with an agitated, blazing face,

  19. Verse 19

    dīptāṅgado dīptakirīṭamālī; baddhasraguṣṇīṣanibaddhakhaḍgaḥ gadī bhuśuṇḍī musalī halī ca; śarāsanī vāraṇatulyavarṣmā

    with blazing armlets, garlanded with a blazing crown, bound with garlands and a turban, with sword fastened, bearing mace, bhuśuṇḍi, club and plough, and bow, of stature like an elephant —

  20. Verse 20

    rathena tenānalavarcasā ca; vidrāvayan pāṇḍavavāhinīṃ tām rarāja saṃkhye parivartamāno; vidyunmālī megha ivāntarikṣe

    with that chariot of the splendour of fire, putting to flight that host of the Pāṇḍavas, he shone in the battle, wheeling about, like a lightning-garlanded cloud in the sky.

  21. Verse 21

    te cāpi sarve pravarā narendrā; mahābalā varmiṇaś carmiṇaś ca harṣānvitā yuyudhus tatra rājan; samantataḥ pāṇḍavayodhavīrāḥ

    And all those foremost lords of men (of the Pāṇḍava side), mighty, mailed and shield-bearing, filled with joy, fought there, O king, on every side — the heroic warriors of the Pāṇḍavas.
