Verse 1
saṃjaya uvāca tam āgatam abhiprekṣya bhīmakarmāṇam āhave harṣam āhārayāṃ cakruḥ kuravaḥ sarva eva te
Sanjaya said: Beholding him (Alāyudha) come, of dreadful deeds, in the battle, the Kurus, all of them, gave way to joy.
Verse 2
tathaiva tava putrās te duryodhanapurogamāḥ aplavāḥ plavam āsādya tartukāmā ivārṇavam
Likewise thy sons, with Duryodhana at their head, were as men without a raft that have found a raft, wishing to cross the ocean.
Verse 3
punarjātam ivātmānaṃ manvānāḥ pārthivās tadā alāyudhaṃ rākṣasendraṃ svāgatenābhyapūjayan
Deeming themselves as though born again, the kings then honoured Alāyudha, the lord of the Rākṣasas, with a welcome.
Verse 4
tasmiṃs tv amānuṣe yuddhe vartamāne bhayāvahe karṇarākṣasayor naktaṃ dāruṇapratidarśane
While that superhuman, fear-inspiring battle of Karṇa and the Rākṣasa (Ghaṭotkaca) was proceeding by night, of dreadful aspect,
Verse 5
upapraikṣanta pāñcālāḥ smayamānāḥ sarājakāḥ tathaiva tāvakā rājan ghūrṇamānās tatas tataḥ
the Pāñcālas together with their kings looked on smiling; and likewise thy (warriors), O king, wheeling this way and that,
Verse 6
cukruśur nedam astīti droṇadrauṇikṛpādayaḥ tat karma dṛṣṭvā saṃbhrāntā haiḍimbasya raṇājire
cried 'This cannot be!' — Droṇa, Drauṇi, Kṛpa and the rest, beholding, alarmed, that deed of the son of Hiḍimbā on the battlefield.
Verse 7
sarvam āvignam abhavad dhāhābhūtam acetanam tava sainyaṃ mahārāja nirāśaṃ karṇajīvite
All (thy host) became agitated, crying 'Alas!', senseless; thy army, O great king, despaired of Karṇa's life.
Verse 8
duryodhanas tu saṃprekṣya karṇam ārtiṃ parāṃ gatam alāyudhaṃ rākṣasendram āhūyedam athābravīt
But Duryodhana, seeing Karṇa reduced to extreme distress, summoned Alāyudha, the lord of the Rākṣasas, and then said this:
Verse 9
eṣa vaikartanaḥ karṇo haiḍimbena samāgataḥ kurute karma sumahad yad asyaupayikaṃ mṛdhe
'This Karṇa the son of the Sun-god (Vaikartana), having closed with the son of Hiḍimbā, is doing a very great deed, that is befitting of him in the fray.'
Verse 10
paśyaitān pārthivāñ śūrān nihatān bhaimaseninā nānāśastrair abhihatān pādapān iva dantinā
'Behold these heroic kings slain by the son of Bhīmasena (Ghaṭotkaca), struck with various weapons, like trees by an elephant.'
Verse 11
tavaiṣa bhāgaḥ samare rājamadhye mayā kṛtaḥ tavaivānumate vīra taṃ vikramya nibarhaya
'This has been made thy portion in the battle by me, in the midst of the kings; with thy own consent, O hero, slay him with valour.'
Verse 12
purā vaikartanaṃ karṇam eṣa pāpo ghaṭotkacaḥ māyābalam upāśritya karśayaty arikarśanaḥ
'Formerly this sinful Ghaṭotkaca, that afflicter of foes, has been afflicting Karṇa the son of the Sun-god (Vaikartana), resorting to the power of illusion.'
Verse 13
evam uktaḥ sa rājñā tu rākṣasas tīvravikramaḥ tathety uktvā mahābāhur ghaṭotkacam upādravat
Thus addressed by the king, that Rākṣasa of fierce valour, saying 'So be it,' the mighty-armed one rushed upon Ghaṭotkaca.
Verse 14
tataḥ karṇaṃ samutsṛjya bhaimasenir api prabho pratyamitram upāyāntaṃ mardayām āsa mārgaṇaiḥ
Then, quitting Karṇa, the son of Bhīmasena (Ghaṭotkaca) too, O lord, crushed with his arrows the foe (Alāyudha) as he came on.
Verse 15
tayoḥ samabhavad yuddhaṃ kruddhayo rākṣasendrayoḥ mattayor vāśitāhetor dvipayor iva kānane
There arose a battle between those two enraged lords of the Rākṣasas, like that of two rutting elephants in a forest over a she-elephant.
Verse 16
rakṣasā vipramuktas tu karṇo 'pi rathināṃ varaḥ abhyadravad bhīmasenaṃ rathenādityavarcasā
Being released by the Rākṣasa (Ghaṭotkaca), Karṇa too, best of car-warriors, rushed upon Bhīmasena with his chariot of the splendour of the sun.
Verse 17
tam āyāntam anādṛtya dṛṣṭvā grastaṃ ghaṭotkacam alāyudhena samare siṃheneva gavāṃ patim
Disregarding him (Karṇa) coming on, seeing Ghaṭotkaca seized in battle by Alāyudha, as kine (are seized) by a lion, the lord of the herd —
Verse 18
rathenādityavapuṣā bhīmaḥ praharatāṃ varaḥ kirañ śaraughān prayayāv alāyudharathaṃ prati
with his chariot of the splendour of the sun, Bhīma, best of smiters, scattering floods of arrows, advanced toward Alāyudha's chariot.
Verse 19
tam āyāntam abhiprekṣya sa tadālāyudhaḥ prabho ghaṭotkacaṃ samutsṛjya bhīmasenaṃ samāhvayat
Beholding him coming on, that Alāyudha then, O lord, quitting Ghaṭotkaca, challenged Bhīmasena.
Verse 20
taṃ bhīmaḥ sahasābhyetya rākṣasāntakaraḥ prabho sagaṇaṃ rākṣasendraṃ taṃ śaravarṣair avākirat
Bhīma, that ender of Rākṣasas, O lord, suddenly approaching him, covered that lord of the Rākṣasas together with his troops with showers of arrows.
Verse 21
tathaivālāyudho rājañ śilādhautair ajihmagaiḥ abhyavarṣata kaunteyaṃ punaḥ punar ariṃdamaḥ
Likewise Alāyudha, O king, with stone-whetted, straight-flying arrows, rained (them) upon the son of Kuntī (Bhīma) again and again, that tamer of foes.
Verse 22
tathā te rākṣasāḥ sarve bhīmasenam upādravan nānāpraharaṇā bhīmās tvatsutānāṃ jayaiṣiṇaḥ
Then all those Rākṣasas, dreadful, bearing various weapons, rushed upon Bhīmasena, seeking the victory of thy sons.
Verse 23
sa tāḍyamāno balibhir bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ pañcabhiḥ pañcabhiḥ sarvāṃs tān avidhyac chitaiḥ śaraiḥ
Though struck by those mighty ones, the mighty Bhīmasena pierced them all, five by five, with sharp arrows.
Verse 24
te vadhyamānā bhīmena rākṣasāḥ kharayonayaḥ vinedus tumulān nādān dudruvuś ca diśo daśa
Those ass-born Rākṣasas, being slain by Bhīma, uttered tumultuous roars, and fled in the ten directions.
Verse 25
tāṃs trāsyamānān bhīmena dṛṣṭvā rakṣo mahābalam abhidudrāva vegena śaraiś cainam avākirat
Seeing them terrified by Bhīma, that mighty Rākṣasa (Alāyudha) rushed with speed and covered him with arrows.
Verse 26
taṃ bhīmasenaḥ samare tīkṣṇāgrair akṣiṇoc charaiḥ alāyudhas tu tān astān bhīmena viśikhān raṇe ciccheda kāṃś cit samare tvarayā kāṃś cid agrahīt
But Bhīmasena wounded him in the battle with sharp-pointed arrows; and Alāyudha cut some of those arrows loosed by Bhīma in the fray, and swiftly seized others.
Verse 27
sa taṃ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasendraṃ bhīmo bhīmaparākramaḥ gadāṃ cikṣepa vegena vajrapātopamāṃ tadā
Beholding that lord of the Rākṣasas, Bhīma of dreadful prowess then hurled his mace with speed, like the fall of the thunderbolt.
Verse 28
tām āpatantīṃ vegena gadāṃ jvālākulāṃ tataḥ gadayā tāḍayām āsa sā gadā bhīmam āvrajat
That mace, whirling on with speed, wreathed in flame, he (Alāyudha) struck with his own mace; and that (latter) mace went flying toward Bhīma.
Verse 29
sa rākṣasendraṃ kaunteyaḥ śaravarṣair avākirat tān apy asyākaron moghān rākṣaso niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
The son of Kuntī (Bhīma) covered that lord of the Rākṣasas with showers of arrows; but the Rākṣasa made those too vain with his sharp arrows.
Verse 30
te cāpi rākṣasāḥ sarve sainikā bhīmarūpiṇaḥ śāsanād rākṣasendrasya nijaghnū rathakuñjarān
And all those Rākṣasa soldiers, dreadful of form, by the command of the lord of the Rākṣasas, slew (Bhīma's) chariots and elephants.
Verse 31
pāñcālāḥ sṛñjayāś caiva vājinaḥ paramadvipāḥ na śāntiṃ lebhire tatra rakṣasair bhṛśapīḍitāḥ
The Pāñcālas and the Sṛñjayas, and the horses and the great elephants, found no peace there, being sorely afflicted by the Rākṣasas.
Verse 32
taṃ tu dṛṣṭvā mahāghoraṃ vartamānaṃ mahāhave abravīt puruṣaśreṣṭho dhanaṃjayam idaṃ vacaḥ
But beholding that most dreadful (battle) proceeding in the great fray, that best of men (Kṛṣṇa) spoke these words to Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna):
Verse 33
paśya bhīmaṃ mahābāho rākṣasendravaśaṃ gatam padavīm asya gaccha tvaṃ mā vicāraya pāṇḍava
'Behold Bhīma, O mighty-armed one, come under the sway of the lord of the Rākṣasas; go thou in his track, O Pāṇḍava; do not deliberate.'
Verse 34
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca yudhāmanyūttamaujasau sahitā draupadeyāś ca karṇaṃ yāntu mahārathāḥ
'Let Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍin, Yudhāmanyu and Uttamaujas, together with the sons of Draupadī, those great car-warriors, go against Karṇa.'
Verse 35
nakulaḥ sahadevaś ca yuyudhānaś ca vīryavān itarān rākṣasān ghnantu śāsanāt tava pāṇḍava
'Let Nakula and Sahadeva, and the valorous Yuyudhāna (Sātyaki), slay the other Rākṣasas, by thy command, O Pāṇḍava.'
Verse 36
tvam apīmāṃ mahābāho camūṃ droṇapuraskṛtām vārayasva naravyāghra mahad dhi bhayam āgatam
'And do thou too, O mighty-armed one, check this host led by Droṇa, O tiger among men; for a great danger has come.'
Verse 37
evam ukte tu kṛṣṇena yathoddiṣṭā mahārathāḥ jagmur vaikartanaṃ karṇaṃ rākṣasāṃś cetarān raṇe
When Kṛṣṇa had thus spoken, the great car-warriors, as directed, went against Karṇa the son of the Sun-god (Vaikartana), and against the other Rākṣasas in the battle.
Verse 38
atha pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭaiḥ śarair āśīviṣopamaiḥ dhanuś ciccheda bhīmasya rākṣasendraḥ pratāpavān
Then with (arrows) loosed from a fully-drawn (bow), resembling venomous serpents, the valorous lord of the Rākṣasas (Alāyudha) cut Bhīma's bow.
Verse 39
hayāṃś cāsya śitair bāṇaiḥ sārathiṃ ca mahābalaḥ jaghāna miṣataḥ saṃkhye bhīmasenasya bhārata
And with sharp arrows the mighty one slew his steeds and his charioteer in the fight, before the eyes of Bhīmasena, O Bhārata.
Verse 40
so 'vatīrya rathopasthād dhatāśvo hatasārathiḥ tasmai gurvīṃ gadāṃ ghorāṃ sa vinadyotsasarja ha
He (Bhīma), descending from the platform of his chariot, his steeds and charioteer slain, roaring, hurled at him (Alāyudha) a heavy, dreadful mace.
Verse 41
tatas tāṃ bhīmanirghoṣām āpatantīṃ mahāgadām gadayā rākṣaso ghoro nijaghāna nanāda ca
Then that dreadful Rākṣasa struck down with his own mace that great, dread-sounding mace as it rushed on, and roared.
Verse 42
tad dṛṣṭvā rākṣasendrasya ghoraṃ karma bhayāvaham bhīmasenaḥ prahṛṣṭātmā gadām āśu parāmṛśat
Beholding that dreadful, fear-inspiring deed of the lord of the Rākṣasas, Bhīmasena, delighted in soul, swiftly grasped his mace.
Verse 43
tayoḥ samabhavad yuddhaṃ tumulaṃ nararakṣasoḥ gadānipātasaṃhrādair bhuvaṃ kampayator bhṛśam
There arose a tumultuous battle between the man and the Rākṣasa, both making the earth tremble exceedingly with the crash of their falling maces.
Verse 44
gadāvimuktau tau bhūyaḥ samāsādyetaretaram muṣṭibhir vajrasaṃhrādair anyonyam abhijaghnatuḥ
Having cast away their maces, those two, again closing with one another, smote each other with fists that crashed like the thunderbolt.
Verse 45
rathacakrair yugair akṣair adhiṣṭhānair upaskaraiḥ yathāsannam upādāya nijaghnatur amarṣaṇau
With chariot-wheels, yokes, axles, chariot-frames and appurtenances, taking up whatever was near, those two furious ones smote one another.
Verse 46
tau vikṣarantau rudhiraṃ samāsādyetaretaram mattāv iva mahānāgāv akṛṣyetāṃ punaḥ punaḥ
Those two, streaming with blood, closing with one another, were dragged back again and again, like two rutting great elephants.
Verse 47
tam apaśyad dhṛṣīkeśaḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ hite rataḥ sa bhīmasenarakṣārthaṃ haiḍimbaṃ pratyacodayat
Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa), devoted to the good of the Pāṇḍavas, beheld him (Bhīma); and for the protection of Bhīmasena, he urged on the son of Hiḍimbā (Ghaṭotkaca).
