Sanjaya said: In the battle Partha, Dhananjaya, ranged about, a sight worth beholding, displaying his wondrous weapons at once in all quarters. Then, wrathful, the mighty-armed one brought forth the invincible Aindra weapon (of Indra), O great king, terrifying all the Bharatas. Thereupon arrows, charged with the mantras of celestial weapons, blazing and flame-mouthed, appeared by the hundred and by the thousand. By those shafts, loosed drawn back to the ear, resembling the beams of fire and of the sun, the sky became hard to look upon, as if covered over with meteors. Then that darkness of weapons raised up by the Kauravas, which others could not disperse even in thought, the Pandava, ranging as if bewildered, destroyed by his valour with shafts charged by celestial-weapon mantras, swiftly, as the sun at day's dawn scatters the darkness of night with his beams. Then with his blazing arrow-rays he flung aside thy host, as the summer sun, that lord, dries up the waters of the pools. Then the arrow-beams sent forth by him who knew the celestial weapons flooded over the enemy's host, as the beams of the sun flood the world. Others again, keen shafts of fierce energy loosed by him, swiftly entered the hearts of the heroes, as dear kinsmen enter the heart. Those of thy warriors who, deeming themselves brave, came against him in battle went to destruction, like blazing moths that, reaching a fire, perish. Thus crushing both the lives and the fame of his foes, Partha ranged over the field like Death in embodied form. Diademed heads in their turbans, broad arms adorned with armlets, and ears with their pairs of earrings, of some he struck off with his arrows. The arms of elephant-riders together with their lances, those of horsemen with their pikes, those of foot-soldiers with their shields, those of car-warriors with their bows, and those of charioteers with their goads, the Pandava severed. Radiant there with his blazing, fierce arrow-flames, Dhananjaya shone like the sacrificial fire ablaze with spark-tipped crests. Him, the equal of the king of the gods, foremost of all bearers of weapons, standing upon his car and seen at once in all quarters, that bull among men, displaying his mighty weapons, Dhananjaya, a sight worth beholding, dancing along the tracks of his car and making the air resound with the twang of his bowstring and the slap of his palm, the kings, though they strove, could not even gaze upon, even as they cannot gaze upon the sun scorching in the midday sky. Bearing his blazing, fierce, gathered shafts, the diademed one shone like a great cloud swollen with water in the rains, together with Indra's bow, the rainbow. When that flood of mighty weapons had been set flowing by Jishnu, most difficult to cross and terrible, the bulls among warriors sank down within it. With bodies whose faces were cut off, with trunks whose arms were severed, with arms fallen from the hands, with hands whose fingers were cut away; with elephants, their trunk-tips severed and their tusks broken, mad with rut; with horses, their hoofs and necks cut through; with cars broken to pieces; with warriors whose entrails were torn out, whose feet were cut off, and others whose joints were severed, some motionless and some writhing and moaning by the thousand, that great battlefield of Partha, dear as the sport of Death, O guardian of the earth, augmenting the terror of the timid, we beheld, like the playground of Rudra when of old he destroyed the creatures. In places the earth, strewn with elephants' trunks loosed by razor-headed shafts, seemed as if strewn with serpents; in places it shone as if garlanded, covered over with those curved trunks like lotuses. With varied turbans and crowns, with bracelets, armlets and earrings, with gold-embroidered armour, and with the trappings of elephants and horses, strewn here and there and heaped with hundreds of diadems, the earth, exceedingly varied, shone brightly like a new bride. Its mire was marrow and fat, its current the flood of blood, unfathomable with vital parts and bones, its moss and turf the hair of the slain; its banks and stones were heads and arms, its narrows the broken breast-bones; rich with varied banners and pennons, garlanded with waves of parasols and bows; filled with the vast lifeless bodies and the carcasses of elephants; strewn with hundreds of cars for its rafts, its banks the heaps of slain horses; most difficult to pass by reason of wheels, yokes, poles, axles and car-shafts; hard to approach for its pikes, swords, spears, axes and serpent-like shafts; with cranes and herons for its great crocodiles, terrible with jackals for its sea-monsters, with vultures for its fierce great sharks, dreadful with the howling of she-jackals; thronged by the thousand with dancing ghosts, pisachas and other spirits; bearing along hundreds of the motionless bodies of lifeless warriors, most fearsome and dreadful, like the very Vaitarani; such a river, augmenting the fear of the timid, did he cause to flow. Beholding that prowess of his, like the Ender himself in form, a fear never known before came upon the Kurus on the field of battle. Then, taking up the celestial weapons of the heroes with his own weapons, the Pandava, set upon fierce deeds, showed himself terrible. Then, O king, Arjuna passed beyond those foremost of car-warriors.

  2. Verse 2

madhyaṃdinagataṃ sūryaṃ pratapantam ivāmbare na śekuḥ sarvabhūtāni pāṇḍavaṃ prativīkṣitum

Like the sun risen to the meridian and scorching in the sky, all beings were unable to look upon the Pandava.

  3. Verse 3

prasṛtāṃs tasya gāṇḍīvāc charavrātān mahātmanaḥ saṃgrāme samapaśyāma haṃsapaṅktīr ivāmbare

The volleys of shafts that streamed forth from the Gandiva of that great-souled one we beheld in the battle like rows of swans in the sky.

  4. Verse 4

vinivārya sa vīrāṇām astrair astrāṇi sarvaśaḥ darśayan raudram ātmānam ugre karmaṇi dhiṣṭhitaḥ

Warding off on every side the weapons of the heroes with his own weapons, he showed himself terrible, set fast upon fierce deeds.

  5. Verse 5

sa tān rathavarān rājann abhyatikrāmad arjunaḥ mohayann iva nārācair jayadrathavadhepsayā

That Arjuna, O king, passed beyond those foremost of car-warriors, bewildering them as it were with his iron shafts, in his longing to slay Jayadratha.

  6. Verse 6

visṛjan dikṣu sarvāsu śarān asitasārathiḥ sa raṇe vyacarat tūrṇaṃ prekṣaṇīyo dhanaṃjayaḥ

Loosing his arrows in all directions, Dhananjaya, whose charioteer was the dark one (Krishna), that sight worth beholding, ranged swiftly over the battle.

  7. Verse 7

bhramanta iva śūrasya śaravrātā mahātmanaḥ adṛśyantāntarikṣasthāḥ śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ

The volleys of shafts of that heroic, great-souled one, seeming to wheel about, were seen resting in mid-air by the hundred and by the thousand.

  8. Verse 8

ādadānaṃ maheṣvāsaṃ saṃdadhānaṃ ca pāṇḍavam visṛjantaṃ ca kaunteyaṃ nānupaśyāmahe tadā

That great bowman, the Pandava, son of Kunti, taking up his arrows, fitting them, and loosing them, we could not then discern at all.

  9. Verse 9

tathā sarvā diśo rājan sarvāṃś ca rathino raṇe ākulīkṛtya kaunteyo jayadratham upādravat vivyādha ca catuḥṣaṣṭyā śarāṇāṃ nataparvaṇām

Thus, O king, having thrown into confusion all the quarters and all the car-warriors in the battle, the son of Kunti rushed upon Jayadratha, and pierced him with sixty-four straight-jointed arrows.

  10. Verse 10

saindhavas tu tathā viddhaḥ śarair gāṇḍīvadhanvanā na cakṣame susaṃkruddhas tottrārdita iva dvipaḥ

But the ruler of the Sindhus, thus pierced by the shafts of the wielder of Gandiva, could not brook it, and grew greatly enraged, like an elephant tormented by the goad.

  11. Verse 11

That bearer of the boar-banner swiftly loosed at Savyasachin keen shafts, vulture-feathered and straight-flying, resembling venomous serpents and burnished by the smith.

  12. Verse 12

tribhis tu viddhvā gāṇḍīvaṃ nārācaiḥ ṣaḍbhir arjunam aṣṭābhir vājino 'vidhyad dhvajaṃ caikena patriṇā

Piercing the Gandiva with three arrows and Arjuna with six, he struck the horses with eight and the banner with a single shaft.

  13. Verse 13

Then Arjuna, warding off those keen shafts sent by the Saindhava, at once with two arrows cut off from his body the head of the ruler of the Sindhus' charioteer and his well-adorned banner.

  14. Verse 14

sa chinnayaṣṭiḥ sumahāñ śīryamāṇaḥ śarāhataḥ varāhaḥ sindhurājasya papātāgniśikhopamaḥ

That very great boar-banner of the Sindhu-king, its staff severed and itself shattered and struck by arrows, fell down resembling a flame of fire.

Meanwhile, as the sun was swiftly declining, Janardana in haste said to the Pandava there: 'This Saindhava, O Partha, has been set in the midst by six heroic mighty car-warriors; longing to live, O mighty-armed one, he stands there in fear. Without vanquishing these six car-warriors in battle, O bull among men, the Saindhava cannot be slain outright, O Arjuna. I shall here contrive by yoga a veiling of the sun. Then that Sindhu-king alone will plainly see it as though the sun had set. Longing to live, in his joy, for thy destruction, O lord, that evil-doer will by no means keep himself hidden. In that opening thou shouldst strike him, O best of the Kurus; no heed at all should be paid to the thought that the sun has set.' 'So be it,' Bibhatsu answered Kesava. Then Krishna, the yogin joined with yoga, Hari the lord of yogins, created a darkness to veil the sun. When that darkness had been made by Krishna, thy warriors, O ruler of men, rejoiced, thinking the sun had set, at the prospect of Partha's ruin. Rejoicing in the battle, O king, and not seeing the sun, thy soldiers raised up their faces; and so too did king Jayadratha. When the ruler of the Sindhus was thus gazing at the sun, Krishna again spoke this word to Dhananjaya: 'Behold the heroic lord of the Sindhus gazing at the sun, having cast off his great fear of thee, O best of the Bharatas. This is the hour, O mighty-armed one, for the slaying of that wicked-souled one; strike off his head swiftly, and make thy vow bear fruit.' Thus addressed by Kesava, the valiant son of Pandu began to slaughter thy host with shafts resembling the sun and fire. He pierced Kripa with twenty and Karna with fifty arrows; he smote Salya and Duryodhana each with six, Vrishasena with eight, and the Saindhava with sixty. And the mighty-armed son of Pandu, having deeply pierced with his arrows the other warriors of thine as well, O king, rushed upon Jayadratha. Beholding him standing near, like a licking flame, the protectors of Jayadratha fell into utmost doubt. Then, O great king, all thy warriors, longing for victory, drenched the son of the chastiser of Paka (Arjuna) with showers of shafts in the fight. Being covered again and again with nets of arrows, that mighty-armed, unvanquished delight of the Kurus, the son of Kunti, grew wrathful. Then that tiger among men, the son of the chastiser of Paka, loosed a dense net of arrows, seeking to slay thy host. Struck by that hero in the battle, O king, thy warriors abandoned the Saindhava in fear; not even two ran away together. Therein we beheld the wondrous prowess of Kunti's son; such as that greatly renowned one wrought has never been nor shall ever be. Elephants and elephant-riders, horses and horsemen, and car-warriors likewise he slew, as Rudra slays the beasts. In that battle, O ruler of men, I saw not a single elephant, horse, or man that was not struck by Partha's shafts. Their eyes veiled by dust and darkness, the warriors sank into a terrible stupor and knew not one another. Those soldiers, their vital parts pierced by the arrows sped by Partha, wandered, stumbled, fell, sank down and languished, O Bharata. In that most terrible, well-nigh impassable, and exceedingly dreadful battle, raging like the destruction of creatures, by the outpouring of blood and by the swiftness of the wind, that dust of the earth was laid, the ground being drenched with gore. The car-wheels of thy people sank to their naves in blood upon the battlefield, O king, and the maddened, swift elephants, their riders slain and their bodies torn, by the thousand, crushing their own ranks, fled away uttering cries of pain. Horses whose riders had fallen, and foot-soldiers too, O ruler of men, fled away in fear, struck by Dhananjaya's shafts. With hair dishevelled and armour cast off, streaming blood upon the earth, men fled in terror, abandoning the front of the battle. And some there were seized as if by cramp in the thighs and fell upon the ground; and others hid themselves in the midst of slain elephants. Thus, O king, having routed thy host, Dhananjaya slaughtered with his dreadful shafts the guardians of the Sindhu-king. Karna, Drona's son, Kripa, Salya, Vrishasena and Suyodhana the Pandava covered with a fierce net of arrows. Taking up, aiming, loosing, or fitting his arrows, O king, Arjuna could not by any means be discerned in the fight, so swift was he with his weapons. Only the circle of his drawn bow was ever seen as he shot, and the shafts were seen streaming forth on every side. Then, cutting off the bow of Karna and of Vrishasena, and with a broad-headed arrow felling Salya's charioteer from his car-seat, Arjuna, best of the victorious, in that battle made both the nephew and the uncle, Drona's son and the son of Saradvat (Kripa), deeply pierced with arrows. Having thus thrown into confusion those mighty car-warriors of thine, the Pandava took up a dreadful shaft resembling fire, like Indra's thunderbolt in aspect, consecrated with celestial-weapon mantras, ever able to bear any strain, great, and worshipped with perfumes and garlands. Joining it with the thunderbolt weapon according to rule, the mighty-armed Arjuna, delight of the Kurus, swiftly fitted it to Gandiva. When that shaft of flaming splendour was being fixed, a great roar of the beings arose in mid-air, O king. And Janardana in haste spoke there once again.

  16. Verse 16

'O Dhananjaya, strike off the head of the wicked-souled Saindhava! The sun is about to reach the best of mountains (the western mount) to set. Hear now my word concerning the slaying of Jayadratha.'

  17. Verse 17

Vriddhakshatra, the father of the Saindhava, is renowned in the world; after a long time he obtained the Saindhava as his son.

  18. Verse 18

jayadratham amitraghnaṃ taṃ covāca tato nṛpam antarhitā tadā vāṇī meghadundubhinisvanā

To Jayadratha, that slayer of foes, and to that king, an unseen voice then spoke, with a sound deep as clouds and drums.

  19. Verse 19

tavātmajo 'yaṃ martyeṣu kulaśīladamādibhiḥ guṇair bhaviṣyati vibho sadṛśo vaṃśayor dvayoḥ kṣatriyapravaro loke nityaṃ śūrābhisatkṛtaḥ

'This son of thine, O lord, among mortals shall in lineage, conduct, self-restraint and the other virtues become worthy of both the races; a foremost Kshatriya in the world, ever honoured by the brave.'

  20. Verse 20

śatrubhir yudhyamānasya saṃgrāme tv asya dhanvinaḥ śiraś chetsyati saṃkruddhaḥ śatrur nālakṣito bhuvi

'But of this bowman, while he fights with foes in battle, a wrathful enemy, unnoticed upon the earth, shall cut off the head.'

  21. Verse 21

etac chrutvā sindhurājo dhyātvā ciram ariṃdama jñātīn sarvān uvācedaṃ putrasnehābhipīḍitaḥ

Hearing this, the Sindhu-king pondered long, O subduer of foes, and, overcome by love for his son, spoke thus to all his kinsmen:

  22. Verse 22

saṃgrāme yudhyamānasya vahato mahatīṃ dhuram dharaṇyāṃ mama putrasya pātayiṣyati yaḥ śiraḥ tasyāpi śatadhā mūrdhā phaliṣyati na saṃśayaḥ

'Whoever shall cause the head of my son, as he fights in battle bearing a mighty burden, to fall upon the earth, his head too shall split into a hundred pieces; of that there is no doubt.'

  23. Verse 23

evam uktvā tato rājye sthāpayitvā jayadratham vṛddhakṣatro vanaṃ yātas tapaśceṣṭaṃ samāsthitaḥ

Having spoken thus and established Jayadratha upon the kingdom, Vriddhakshatra went to the forest and set himself to the austerest penance.

  24. Verse 24

so 'yaṃ tapyati tejasvī tapo ghoraṃ durāsadam samantapañcakād asmād bahir vānaraketana

That splendid one is now performing dreadful, well-nigh unbearable austerity, outside this very Samantapanchaka, O ape-bannered one.

  25. Verse 25

tasmāj jayadrathasya tvaṃ śiraś chittvā mahāmṛdhe divyenāstreṇa ripuhan ghoreṇādbhutakarmaṇā

Therefore, having cut off Jayadratha's head in this great battle, O slayer of foes, with a celestial, dreadful weapon of wondrous working,

  26. Verse 26

sakuṇḍalaṃ sindhupateḥ prabhañjanasutānuja utsaṅge pātayasvāśu vṛddhakṣatrasya bhārata

cast down swiftly the head of the Sindhu-lord, together with its earrings, upon the lap of Vriddhakshatra, O younger brother of the Wind-god's son (Bhima), O Bharata.

  27. Verse 27

atha tvam asya mūrdhānaṃ pātayiṣyasi bhūtale tavāpi śatadhā mūrdhā phaliṣyati na saṃśayaḥ

But if thou let his head fall upon the ground, thy own head too shall split into a hundred pieces; of that there is no doubt.

  28. Verse 28

Act, O best of the Kurus, having recourse to the celestial weapon, in such wise that that king, the lord of earth, may not know of it.

  29. Verse 29

na hy asādhyam akāryaṃ vā vidyate tava kiṃ cana samasteṣv api lokeṣu triṣu vāsavanandana

For there is nothing impossible or unachievable for thee in all the three worlds together, O delight of Vasava (Arjuna).

  30. Verse 30

etac chrutvā tu vacanaṃ sṛkkiṇī parisaṃlihan indrāśanisamasparśaṃ divyamantrābhimantritam

Hearing this word, licking the corners of his mouth, that shaft whose touch was like Indra's thunderbolt, consecrated with celestial mantras,

  31. Verse 31

sarvabhārasahaṃ śaśvadgandhamālyārcitaṃ śaram visasarjārjunas tūrṇaṃ saindhavasya vadhe vṛtaḥ

able to bear every burden, ever worshipped with perfumes and garlands, Arjuna swiftly loosed, intent upon the slaying of the Saindhava.

  32. Verse 32

sa tu gāṇḍīvanirmuktaḥ śaraḥ śyena ivāśugaḥ śakuntam iva vṛkṣāgrāt saindhavasya śiro 'harat

That shaft, loosed from Gandiva, swift as a hawk, bore off the head of the Saindhava, as a hawk bears off a bird from the top of a tree.

  33. Verse 33

aharat tat punaś caiva śarair ūrdhvaṃ dhanaṃjayaḥ durhṛdām apraharṣāya suhṛdāṃ harṣaṇāya ca

And Dhananjaya bore that head aloft again and again with his arrows, to the sorrow of his enemies and the joy of his friends.

  34. Verse 34

śaraiḥ kadambakīkṛtya kāle tasmiṃś ca pāṇḍavaḥ samantapañcakād bāhyaṃ śiras tad vyaharat tataḥ

Keeping it aloft in a cluster of shafts, the Pandava, at that moment, bore that head beyond Samantapanchaka.

  35. Verse 35

etasminn eva kāle tu vṛddhakṣatro mahīpatiḥ saṃdhyām upāste tejasvī saṃbandhī tava māriṣa

At that very time King Vriddhakshatra, the splendid one, thy kinsman, O revered sir, was worshipping at the twilight prayer.

  36. Verse 36

upāsīnasya tasyātha kṛṣṇakeśaṃ sakuṇḍalam sindhurājasya mūrdhānam utsaṅge samapātayat

Upon the lap of him as he sat, he let fall the black-haired, earring-decked head of the Sindhu-king.

  37. Verse 37

tasyotsaṅge nipatitaṃ śiras tac cārukuṇḍalam vṛddhakṣatrasya nṛpater alakṣitam ariṃdama

That head, adorned with fair earrings, fallen upon his lap, was not perceived by King Vriddhakshatra, O subduer of foes.

  38. Verse 38

kṛtajapyasya tasyātha vṛddhakṣatrasya dhīmataḥ uttiṣṭhatas tat sahasā śiro 'gacchad dharātalam

Then, when the wise Vriddhakshatra had finished his prayer and rose up suddenly, that head fell to the surface of the earth.

  39. Verse 39

tatas tasya narendrasya putramūrdhani bhūtalam gate tasyāpi śatadhā mūrdhāgacchad ariṃdama

And when the head of that king's son had reached the ground, his own head too split into a hundred pieces, O subduer of foes.

  40. Verse 40

tataḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni vismayaṃ jagmur uttamam vāsudevaś ca bībhatsuṃ praśaśaṃsa mahāratham

Then all beings were filled with the utmost wonder, and Vasudeva praised Bibhatsu, the mighty car-warrior.

  41. Verse 41

tato dṛṣṭvā vinihataṃ sindhurājaṃ jayadratham putrāṇāṃ tava netrebhyo duḥkhād bahv apataj jalam

Then, beholding the Sindhu-king Jayadratha slain, from the eyes of thy sons much water fell down in grief.

  42. Verse 42

bhīmaseno 'pi saṃgrāme bodhayann iva pāṇḍavam siṃhanādena mahatā pūrayām āsa rodasī

Bhimasena too, in the battle, as if to inform the Pandava (Yudhishthira), filled heaven and earth with a mighty lion's roar.

  43. Verse 43

taṃ śrutvā tu mahānādaṃ dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ saindhavaṃ nihataṃ mene phalgunena mahātmanā

Hearing that great roar, Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, concluded that the Saindhava had been slain by the great-souled Phalguna.

  44. Verse 44

tato vāditraghoṣeṇa svān yodhān abhiharṣayan abhyavartata saṃgrāme bhāradvājaṃ yuyutsayā

Then, gladdening his own warriors with the sound of musical instruments, he advanced in the battle against the son of Bharadvaja (Drona), longing to fight.

  45. Verse 45

tataḥ pravavṛte rājann astaṃ gacchati bhāskare droṇasya somakaiḥ sārdhaṃ saṃgrāmo lomaharṣaṇaḥ

Then, O king, as the sun was setting, there arose a hair-raising battle of Drona with the Somakas.

  46. Verse 46

te tu sarvaprayatnena bhāradvājaṃ jighāṃsavaḥ saindhave nihate rājann ayudhyanta mahārathāḥ

With every effort, longing to slay the son of Bharadvaja, those mighty car-warriors fought, O king, after the Saindhava had been slain.

  47. Verse 47

pāṇḍavās tu jayaṃ labdhvā saindhavaṃ vinihatya ca ayodhayaṃs tato droṇaṃ jayonmattās tatas tataḥ

The Pandavas, having won victory and slain the Saindhava, then fought against Drona here and there, intoxicated with triumph.

  48. Verse 48

arjuno 'pi raṇe yodhāṃs tāvakān rathasattamān ayodhayan mahārāja hatvā saindhavakaṃ nṛpam

Arjuna too, O great king, having slain the Saindhava king, fought in battle against thy warriors, those foremost of car-warriors.

  49. Verse 49

sa devaśatrūn iva devarājaḥ; kirīṭamālī vyadhamat samantāt yathā tamāṃsy abhyuditas tamoghnaḥ; pūrvāṃ pratijñāṃ samavāpya vīraḥ

He, the diadem-garlanded hero, having fulfilled his former vow, scattered them on every side as the king of the gods scatters the foes of the gods, as the risen dispeller of darkness (the sun) scatters the shades of night.
