  1. Verse 1

saṃjaya uvāca tasmin vilulite sainye saindhavāyārjune gate sātvate bhīmasene ca putras te droṇam abhyayāt tvarann ekarathenaiva bahukṛtyaṃ vicintayan

Sanjaya said: When that army was thrown into confusion, Arjuna having gone against the Saindhava, and the Satvata (Satyaki) and Bhimasena having pressed on, your son went to Drona, hastening on a single chariot, pondering the many things to be done.

  2. Verse 2

sa rathas tava putrasya tvarayā parayā yutaḥ tūrṇam abhyapatad droṇaṃ manomārutavegavān

That chariot of your son, endowed with utmost speed, swiftly rushed upon Drona, fleet as mind and wind.

  3. Verse 3

uvāca cainaṃ putras te saṃrambhād raktalocanaḥ arjuno bhīmasenaś ca sātyakiś cāparājitaḥ

And your son, red-eyed with agitation, said to him: 'Arjuna, and Bhimasena, and the unconquered Satyaki —'

  4. Verse 4

vijitya sarvasainyāni sumahānti mahārathāḥ saṃprāptāḥ sindhurājasya samīpam arikarśanāḥ vyāyacchanti ca tatrāpi sarva evāparājitāḥ

'having vanquished vast hosts, those great car-warriors, those grinders of foes, have reached the vicinity of the king of the Sindhus; and there too they all press on, unconquered.'

  5. Verse 5

yadi tāvad raṇe pārtho vyatikrānto mahārathaḥ kathaṃ sātyakibhīmābhyāṃ vyatikrānto 'si mānada

'If indeed Partha (Arjuna), that great car-warrior, has broken through in battle, how is it that you have been passed by Satyaki and Bhima, O giver of honour?'

  6. Verse 6

āścaryabhūtaṃ loke 'smin samudrasyeva śoṣaṇam nirjayaṃ tava viprāgrya sātvatenārjunena ca

'A marvel it is in this world, like the drying up of the ocean — this triumph over you, O foremost of Brahmanas, by the Satvata (Satyaki) and by Arjuna.'

  7. Verse 7

tathaiva bhīmasenena lokaḥ saṃvadate bhṛśam kathaṃ droṇo jitaḥ saṃkhye dhanurvedasya pāragaḥ

'And likewise the world speaks much of Bhimasena — how was Drona, master of the science of arms, vanquished in battle?'

  8. Verse 8

nāśa eva tu me nūnaṃ mandabhāgyasya saṃyuge yatra tvāṃ puruṣavyāghram atikrāntās trayo rathāḥ

'Surely it is my very ruin in the fray, luckless as I am, that three car-warriors have passed beyond you, O tiger among men.'

  9. Verse 9

evaṃ gate tu kṛtye 'smin brūhi yat te vivakṣitam yad gataṃ gatam eveha śeṣaṃ cintaya mānada

'This deed being thus done, say what you wish to say; what is gone is gone; consider the remnant, O giver of honour.'

  10. Verse 10

yat kṛtyaṃ sindhurājasya prāptakālam anantaram tad bravītu bhavān kṣipraṃ sādhu tat saṃvidhīyatām

'What must be done concerning the king of the Sindhus, being the immediate need, let you say quickly; let it be well arranged.'

  11. Verse 11

droṇa uvāca cintyaṃ bahu mahārāja kṛtyaṃ yat tatra me śṛṇu trayo hi samatikrāntāḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahārathāḥ yāvad eva bhayaṃ paścāt tāvad eṣāṃ puraḥsaram

Drona said: Much is to be pondered, O great king; hear the task that is mine there. Three great car-warriors of the Pandavas have broken through; as great as is the peril they pose in the rear, so great is it in the van.

  12. Verse 12

tad garīyastaraṃ manye yatra kṛṣṇadhanaṃjayau sā purastāc ca paścāc ca gṛhītā bhāratī camūḥ

That I deem the graver — where Krishna and Dhananjaya are; for the Bharata host is caught, both before and behind.

  13. Verse 13

tatra kṛtyam ahaṃ manye saindhavasyābhirakṣaṇam sa no rakṣyatamas tāta kruddhād bhīto dhanaṃjayāt

Therein I deem the task to be the protection of the Saindhava; he is most to be guarded by us, my son, in fear of the wrathful Dhananjaya.

  14. Verse 14

gatau hi saindhavaṃ vīrau yuyudhānavṛkodarau saṃprāptaṃ tad idaṃ dyūtaṃ yat tac chakunibuddhijam

For the two heroes, Yuyudhana (Satyaki) and Vrikodara (Bhima), have gone against the Saindhava. This dice-match, born of Shakuni's cunning, has now come to its reckoning.

  15. Verse 15

na sabhāyāṃ jayo vṛtto nāpi tatra parājayaḥ iha no glahamānānām adya tāta jayājayau

Not in the assembly-hall was the victory won, nor there the defeat; here, for us who stake today, my son, lie victory and defeat.

  16. Verse 16

yān sma tān glahate ghorāñ śakuniḥ kurusaṃsadi akṣān saṃmanyamānaḥ sa prā kśarās te durāsadāḥ

Those terrible stakes that Shakuni cast in the Kuru assembly, deeming them dice — those, in truth, are these arrows, hard to withstand, my son.

  17. Verse 17

yatra te bahavas tāta kuravaḥ paryavasthitāḥ senāṃ durodaraṃ viddhi śarān akṣān viśāṃ pate

Where the many Kurus, my son, are arrayed — know the army to be the gambling-board, and the arrows to be the dice, O lord of the people.

  18. Verse 18

glahaṃ ca saindhavaṃ rājann atra dyūtasya niścayaḥ saindhave hi mahādyūtaṃ samāsaktaṃ paraiḥ saha

And the Saindhava, O king, is the stake; herein lies the game's decision; for upon the Saindhava the great game is staked with the foes.

  19. Verse 19

atra sarve mahārāja tyaktvā jīvitam ātmanaḥ saindhavasya raṇe rakṣāṃ vidhivat kartum arhatha tatra no glahamānānāṃ dhruvau tāta jayājayau

Herein, O great king, all, casting away their own lives, ought duly to make the protection of the Saindhava in battle. Therein, for us who play, my son, victory and defeat are surely at stake.

  20. Verse 20

yatra te parameṣvāsā yattā rakṣanti saindhavam tatra yāhi svayaṃ śīghraṃ tāṃś ca rakṣasva rakṣiṇaḥ

Where the great bowmen, vigilant, guard the Saindhava, go there yourself quickly, and protect those guardians.

  21. Verse 21

ihaiva tv aham āsiṣye preṣayiṣyāmi cāparān nirotsyāmi ca pāñcālān sahitān pāṇḍusṛñjayaiḥ

But here I myself will remain, and will send forth others, and will hold back the Panchalas together with the Pandavas and the Srinjayas.

  22. Verse 22

tato duryodhanaḥ prāyāt tūrṇam ācāryaśāsanāt udyamyātmānam ugrāya karmaṇe sapadānugaḥ

Then Duryodhana at once set forth at the preceptor's command, rousing himself to a fierce deed, with his followers behind him.

  23. Verse 23

cakrarakṣau tu pāñcālyau yudhāmanyūttamaujasau bāhyena senām abhyetya jagmatuḥ savyasācinam

But the two Panchala wheel-guards, Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas, coming upon the army from the flank, went after Savyasachin (Arjuna).

  24. Verse 24

tau hi pūrvaṃ mahārāja vāritau kṛtavarmaṇā praviṣṭe tv arjune rājaṃs tava sainyaṃ yuyutsayā

For those two, O great king, had earlier been checked by Kritavarman, when Arjuna, O king, had entered your army eager for battle.

  25. Verse 25

tābhyāṃ duryodhanaḥ sārdham agacchad yuddham uttamam tvaritas tvaramāṇābhyāṃ bhrātṛbhyāṃ bhārato balī

With those two, hastening, the mighty Bharata Duryodhana engaged in an excellent combat, himself hastening against the hastening brothers.

  26. Verse 26

tāv abhidravatām enam ubhāv udyatakārmukau mahārathasamākhyātau kṣatriyapravarau yudhi

Both of those, with uplifted bows, rushed against him — both renowned as great car-warriors, foremost of kshatriyas in battle.

  27. Verse 27

yudhāmanyus tu saṃkruddhaḥ śarāṃs triṃśatam āyasān vyasṛjat tava putrasya tvaramāṇaḥ stanāntare

But Yudhamanyu, greatly enraged, hastily let fly thirty iron arrows into the breast of your son.

  28. Verse 28

duryodhano 'pi rājendra pāñcālyasyottamaujasaḥ jaghāna caturaś cāśvān ubhau ca pārṣṇisārathī

Duryodhana too, O king of kings, slew the four horses of the Panchala Uttamaujas, and both his flank-charioteers.

  29. Verse 29

uttamaujā hatāśvas tu hatasūtaś ca saṃyuge āruroha rathaṃ bhrātur yudhāmanyor abhitvaran

Uttamaujas, his horses and charioteer slain in the fray, mounted the chariot of his brother Yudhamanyu, hastening.

  30. Verse 30

sa rathaṃ prāpya taṃ bhrātur duryodhanahayāñ śaraiḥ bahubhis tāḍayām āsa te hatāḥ prāpatan bhuvi

Reaching that chariot of his brother, he struck Duryodhana's horses with many arrows; slain, they fell to the ground.

  31. Verse 31

hayeṣu patiteṣv asya ciccheda parameṣuṇā yudhāmanyur dhanuḥ śīghraṃ śarāvāpaṃ ca saṃyuge

When his horses had fallen, Yudhamanyu swiftly cut off with an excellent shaft, in the fray, Duryodhana's bow and quiver.

  32. Verse 32

From that chariot with slain steeds and charioteer, your son (Duryodhana), that great car-warrior, leaping down and taking up his mace, rushed at the two Panchalas.

  33. Verse 33

tam āpatantaṃ saṃprekṣya kruddhaṃ parapuraṃjayam avaplutau rathopasthād yudhāmanyūttamaujasau

Beholding him rushing on in wrath, that conqueror of hostile cities, the two, Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas, leapt down from their chariot-stand.

  34. Verse 34

tataḥ sa hemacitraṃ taṃ syandanapravaraṃ gadī gadayā pothayām āsa sāśvasūtadhvajaṃ raṇe

Then the mace-bearer smashed with his mace that excellent gold-wrought chariot, together with its horses, charioteer, and banner, in the battle.

  35. Verse 35

And having destroyed it, your son, his own horses and charioteer slain, that scorcher of foes, quickly mounted the chariot of the king of the Madras (Shalya).

  36. Verse 36

pāñcālānāṃ tu mukhyau tau rājaputrau mahābalau ratham anyaṃ samāruhya dhanaṃjayam abhīyatuḥ

But those two foremost of the Panchalas, the mighty princes, mounting another chariot, advanced against Dhananjaya (Arjuna).
