Verse 1
arjuna uvācha kiṁ tad brahma kim adhyātmaṁ kiṁ karma puruṣhottama adhibhūtaṁ cha kiṁ proktam adhidaivaṁ kim uchyate
Arjuna said: What is that Brahman? What is the nature of the Self (adhyatma)? What is action, O Supreme Person? What is said to be the physical realm (adhibhuta), and what is called the divine realm (adhidaiva)?
Verse 2
Who is the lord of sacrifice (adhiyajna), and how does he dwell in this body, O Krishna? And how are you to be known at the time of death by the self-controlled?
Verse 3
śhrī bhagavān uvācha akṣharaṁ brahma paramaṁ svabhāvo ’dhyātmam uchyate bhūta-bhāvodbhava-karo visargaḥ karma-sanjñitaḥ
The Blessed Lord said: The imperishable Brahman is the Supreme; its own essential nature is called the Self (adhyatma); and the creative force that brings beings into existence is called action.
Verse 4
adhibhūtaṁ kṣharo bhāvaḥ puruṣhaśh chādhidaivatam adhiyajño ’ham evātra dehe deha-bhṛitāṁ vara
The perishable physical existence is the realm of beings (adhibhuta); the cosmic Spirit is the divine realm (adhidaiva); and I alone am the lord of sacrifice here in this body, O best of the embodied.
Verse 5
anta-kāle cha mām eva smaran muktvā kalevaram yaḥ prayāti sa mad-bhāvaṁ yāti nāstyatra sanśhayaḥ
And whoever, at the time of death, leaves the body remembering Me alone, attains My being. Of this there is no doubt.
Verse 6
yaṁ yaṁ vāpi smaran bhāvaṁ tyajatyante kalevaram taṁ tam evaiti kaunteya sadā tad-bhāva-bhāvitaḥ
Whatever state of being one remembers when leaving the body at the end, to that very state one goes, O son of Kunti, ever absorbed in that thought.
Verse 7
tasmāt sarveṣhu kāleṣhu mām anusmara yudhya cha mayyarpita-mano-buddhir mām evaiṣhyasyasanśhayam
Therefore, at all times remember Me and fight. With your mind and intellect fixed on Me, you shall surely come to Me.
Verse 8
abhyāsa-yoga-yuktena chetasā nānya-gāminā paramaṁ puruṣhaṁ divyaṁ yāti pārthānuchintayan
With the mind disciplined by the practice of Yoga and not wandering to anything else, one who meditates on the supreme divine Person reaches Him, O Partha.
Verse 9
kaviṁ purāṇam anuśhāsitāram aṇor aṇīyānsam anusmared yaḥ sarvasya dhātāram achintya-rūpam āditya-varṇaṁ tamasaḥ parastāt
One who meditates on the Sage, the Ancient One, the Ruler, smaller than the smallest, the supporter of all, whose form is beyond thought, who is brilliant like the sun and beyond all darkness,
Verse 10
prayāṇa-kāle manasāchalena bhaktyā yukto yoga-balena chaiva bhruvor madhye prāṇam āveśhya samyak sa taṁ paraṁ puruṣham upaiti divyam
at the time of death, with an unmoving mind, endowed with devotion and the power of Yoga, fixing the life-breath fully between the eyebrows, attains that supreme divine Person.
Verse 11
yad akṣharaṁ veda-vido vadanti viśhanti yad yatayo vīta-rāgāḥ yad ichchhanto brahmacharyaṁ charanti tat te padaṁ saṅgraheṇa pravakṣhye
That which the knowers of the Veda call the imperishable, which the self-controlled and passion-free enter, and seeking which men practice celibacy, that goal I shall briefly declare to you.
Verse 12
sarva-dvārāṇi sanyamya mano hṛidi nirudhya cha mūrdhnyādhāyātmanaḥ prāṇam āsthito yoga-dhāraṇām
Controlling all the gates of the body, confining the mind within the heart, and fixing the life-breath in the head, established in the steadfastness of Yoga,
Verse 13
oṁ ityekākṣharaṁ brahma vyāharan mām anusmaran yaḥ prayāti tyajan dehaṁ sa yāti paramāṁ gatim
uttering the single syllable Om, which is Brahman, and remembering Me, one who departs leaving the body reaches the supreme goal.
Verse 14
ananya-chetāḥ satataṁ yo māṁ smarati nityaśhaḥ tasyāhaṁ sulabhaḥ pārtha nitya-yuktasya yoginaḥ
For the yogi who is ever steadfast and remembers Me constantly, with the mind fixed on nothing else, I am easy to attain, O Partha.
Verse 15
mām upetya punar janma duḥkhālayam aśhāśhvatam nāpnuvanti mahātmānaḥ sansiddhiṁ paramāṁ gatāḥ
Having come to Me, those great souls who have attained the highest perfection are not reborn into this impermanent abode of sorrow.
Verse 16
ā-brahma-bhuvanāl lokāḥ punar āvartino ’rjuna mām upetya tu kaunteya punar janma na vidyate
All the worlds, up to the realm of Brahma the creator, are subject to return, O Arjuna; but on reaching Me, O son of Kunti, there is no rebirth.
Verse 17
sahasra-yuga-paryantam ahar yad brahmaṇo viduḥ rātriṁ yuga-sahasrāntāṁ te ’ho-rātra-vido janāḥ
Those who know that a day of Brahma the creator lasts a thousand ages, and that his night also lasts a thousand ages, are the people who truly know day and night.
Verse 18
avyaktād vyaktayaḥ sarvāḥ prabhavantyahar-āgame rātryāgame pralīyante tatraivāvyakta-sanjñake
At the coming of Brahma's day, all manifest things arise from the unmanifest; and at the coming of night, they dissolve into that same unmanifest.
Verse 19
bhūta-grāmaḥ sa evāyaṁ bhūtvā bhūtvā pralīyate rātryāgame ’vaśhaḥ pārtha prabhavatyahar-āgame
This same multitude of beings, coming into being again and again, dissolves at the coming of night, helplessly, O Partha, and comes forth again at the coming of day.
Verse 20
paras tasmāt tu bhāvo ’nyo ’vyakto ’vyaktāt sanātanaḥ yaḥ sa sarveṣhu bhūteṣhu naśhyatsu na vinaśhyati
But higher than this unmanifest is another unmanifest, eternal Being, which does not perish when all beings perish.
Verse 21
avyakto ’kṣhara ityuktas tam āhuḥ paramāṁ gatim yaṁ prāpya na nivartante tad dhāma paramaṁ mama
This unmanifest is called the imperishable; it is said to be the supreme goal, on attaining which there is no return. That is My supreme abode.
Verse 22
puruṣhaḥ sa paraḥ pārtha bhaktyā labhyas tvananyayā yasyāntaḥ-sthāni bhūtāni yena sarvam idaṁ tatam
That supreme Person, O Partha, in whom all beings dwell and by whom all this is pervaded, is attainable through devotion alone, devotion directed to none other.
Verse 23
yatra kāle tvanāvṛittim āvṛittiṁ chaiva yoginaḥ prayātā yānti taṁ kālaṁ vakṣhyāmi bharatarṣhabha
Now I shall tell you, O best of the Bharatas, the times at which yogis depart and either return or do not return.
Verse 24
agnir jyotir ahaḥ śhuklaḥ ṣhaṇ-māsā uttarāyaṇam tatra prayātā gachchhanti brahma brahma-vido janāḥ
Fire, light, day, the bright fortnight, the six months of the sun's northward course: departing by this path, those who know Brahman go to Brahman.
Verses 8.24-26 describe the 'bright' and 'dark' paths (devayana and pitriyana); traditions differ on whether these are literal post-death routes or symbolic of knowledge versus ritual.
Verse 25
dhūmo rātris tathā kṛiṣhṇaḥ ṣhaṇ-māsā dakṣhiṇāyanam tatra chāndramasaṁ jyotir yogī prāpya nivartate
Smoke, night, the dark fortnight, the six months of the sun's southward course: by this path the yogi attains the lunar light and returns.
Verse 26
śhukla-kṛiṣhṇe gatī hyete jagataḥ śhāśhvate mate ekayā yātyanāvṛittim anyayāvartate punaḥ
These bright and dark paths of the world are held to be eternal. By the one, a person goes without return; by the other, he returns again.
Verse 27
naite sṛitī pārtha jānan yogī muhyati kaśhchana tasmāt sarveṣhu kāleṣhu yoga-yukto bhavārjuna
Knowing these two paths, O Partha, no yogi is ever deluded. Therefore at all times be steadfast in Yoga, O Arjuna.
Verse 28
vedeṣhu yajñeṣhu tapaḥsu chaiva dāneṣhu yat puṇya-phalaṁ pradiṣhṭam atyeti tat sarvam idaṁ viditvā yogī paraṁ sthānam upaiti chādyam
Knowing all this, the yogi goes beyond whatever fruits of merit are promised for the study of the Vedas, for sacrifices, for austerities, and for charity, and reaches the supreme primal abode.
