  1. Verse 1

śhrī bhagavān uvācha mayyāsakta-manāḥ pārtha yogaṁ yuñjan mad-āśhrayaḥ asanśhayaṁ samagraṁ māṁ yathā jñāsyasi tach chhṛiṇu

The Blessed Lord said: O Partha, hear how, with your mind attached to Me, practicing Yoga and taking refuge in Me, you will know Me fully and without doubt.

  2. Verse 2

jñānaṁ te ’haṁ sa-vijñānam idaṁ vakṣhyāmyaśheṣhataḥ yaj jñātvā neha bhūyo ’nyaj jñātavyam-avaśhiṣhyate

I shall declare to you in full this knowledge together with realization, knowing which nothing further remains to be known here.

  3. Verse 3

manuṣhyāṇāṁ sahasreṣhu kaśhchid yatati siddhaye yatatām api siddhānāṁ kaśhchin māṁ vetti tattvataḥ

Among thousands of people, scarcely one strives for perfection; and among those who strive and attain perfection, scarcely one knows Me in truth.

  4. Verse 4

bhūmir-āpo ’nalo vāyuḥ khaṁ mano buddhir eva cha ahankāra itīyaṁ me bhinnā prakṛitir aṣhṭadhā

Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect, and ego: this is My nature divided into eight parts.

  5. Verse 5

apareyam itas tvanyāṁ prakṛitiṁ viddhi me parām jīva-bhūtāṁ mahā-bāho yayedaṁ dhāryate jagat

This is My lower nature. But know My other, higher nature, O mighty-armed one, which is the life-principle by which this universe is sustained.

  6. Verse 6

etad-yonīni bhūtāni sarvāṇītyupadhāraya ahaṁ kṛitsnasya jagataḥ prabhavaḥ pralayas tathā

Understand that all beings have their source in these two natures. I am the origin of the entire universe and also its dissolution.

  7. Verse 7

mattaḥ parataraṁ nānyat kiñchid asti dhanañjaya mayi sarvam idaṁ protaṁ sūtre maṇi-gaṇā iva

There is nothing higher than Me, O Arjuna. All this is strung on Me like beads on a thread.

  8. Verse 8

raso ’ham apsu kaunteya prabhāsmi śhaśhi-sūryayoḥ praṇavaḥ sarva-vedeṣhu śhabdaḥ khe pauruṣhaṁ nṛiṣhu

I am the taste in water, O son of Kunti; I am the radiance in the moon and the sun; I am the sacred syllable Om in all the Vedas, the sound in ether, and the manliness in men.

  9. Verse 9

puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛithivyāṁ cha tejaśh chāsmi vibhāvasau jīvanaṁ sarva-bhūteṣhu tapaśh chāsmi tapasviṣhu

I am the pure fragrance of the earth and the brilliance in fire; I am the life in all beings and the austerity in those who practice austerity.

  10. Verse 10

bījaṁ māṁ sarva-bhūtānāṁ viddhi pārtha sanātanam buddhir buddhimatām asmi tejas tejasvinām aham

Know Me, O Partha, to be the eternal seed of all beings. I am the intelligence of the intelligent and the splendor of the splendid.

  11. Verse 11

balaṁ balavatāṁ chāhaṁ kāma-rāga-vivarjitam dharmāviruddho bhūteṣhu kāmo ’smi bharatarṣhabha

I am the strength of the strong, free from desire and attachment; and in beings I am desire that is not opposed to righteousness, O best of the Bharatas.

  12. Verse 12

ye chaiva sāttvikā bhāvā rājasās tāmasāśh cha ye matta eveti tān viddhi na tvahaṁ teṣhu te mayi

Whatever states of being there are, whether of goodness, passion, or darkness, know that they all come from Me. Yet I am not in them; they are in Me.

  13. Verse 13

tribhir guṇa-mayair bhāvair ebhiḥ sarvam idaṁ jagat mohitaṁ nābhijānāti māmebhyaḥ param avyayam

Deluded by these three states made of the qualities of nature, this whole world does not recognize Me, who am higher than them and imperishable.

  14. Verse 14

daivī hyeṣhā guṇa-mayī mama māyā duratyayā mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te

For this divine illusion of Mine, made of the qualities of nature, is hard to overcome. But those who take refuge in Me alone cross beyond this illusion.

  15. Verse 15

na māṁ duṣhkṛitino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ māyayāpahṛita-jñānā āsuraṁ bhāvam āśhritāḥ

The evil-doers, the deluded, and the lowest of men do not take refuge in Me; their knowledge stolen away by illusion, they cling to a demonic nature.

  16. Verse 16

chatur-vidhā bhajante māṁ janāḥ sukṛitino ’rjuna ārto jijñāsur arthārthī jñānī cha bharatarṣhabha

Four kinds of virtuous people worship Me, O Arjuna: the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise, O best of the Bharatas.

  17. Verse 17

teṣhāṁ jñānī nitya-yukta eka-bhaktir viśhiṣhyate priyo hi jñānino ’tyartham ahaṁ sa cha mama priyaḥ

Of these, the wise person, ever steadfast and devoted to the One, excels; for I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and he is dear to Me.

  18. Verse 18

udārāḥ sarva evaite jñānī tvātmaiva me matam āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā mām evānuttamāṁ gatim

All these are noble, but the wise person I regard as My very Self; for, with his mind steadfast, he is established in Me as the supreme goal.

  19. Verse 19

bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān māṁ prapadyate vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā su-durlabhaḥ

At the end of many births, the wise person takes refuge in Me, realizing that Vasudeva is all. Such a great soul is very rare.

  20. Verse 20

kāmais tais tair hṛita-jñānāḥ prapadyante ’nya-devatāḥ taṁ taṁ niyamam āsthāya prakṛityā niyatāḥ svayā

Those whose knowledge is stolen away by various desires take refuge in other gods, following this or that observance, constrained by their own nature.

  21. Verse 21

yo yo yāṁ yāṁ tanuṁ bhaktaḥ śhraddhayārchitum ichchhati tasya tasyāchalāṁ śhraddhāṁ tām eva vidadhāmyaham

Whatever form any devotee wishes to worship with faith, I make that devotee's faith in that form firm and unwavering.

  22. Verse 22

sa tayā śhraddhayā yuktas tasyārādhanam īhate labhate cha tataḥ kāmān mayaiva vihitān hi tān

Endowed with that faith, he seeks to worship that form and obtains from it the objects of his desire, which are in fact granted by Me alone.

  23. Verse 23

antavat tu phalaṁ teṣhāṁ tad bhavatyalpa-medhasām devān deva-yajo yānti mad-bhaktā yānti mām api

But the fruit gained by these people of small understanding is limited. The worshippers of the gods go to the gods, but My devotees come to Me.

  24. Verse 24

avyaktaṁ vyaktim āpannaṁ manyante mām abuddhayaḥ paraṁ bhāvam ajānanto mamāvyayam anuttamam

Those who lack understanding think of Me, the unmanifest, as having become manifest, not knowing My higher nature, which is imperishable and supreme.

  25. Verse 25

nāhaṁ prakāśhaḥ sarvasya yoga-māyā-samāvṛitaḥ mūḍho ’yaṁ nābhijānāti loko mām ajam avyayam

I am not revealed to all, being veiled by My divine power of illusion. This deluded world does not recognize Me as the unborn and imperishable.

  26. Verse 26

I know the beings of the past, the present, and the future, O Arjuna; but no one knows Me.

  27. Verse 27

ichchhā-dveṣha-samutthena dvandva-mohena bhārata sarva-bhūtāni sammohaṁ sarge yānti parantapa

All beings, O descendant of Bharata, are born into delusion, deluded by the pairs of opposites that arise from desire and aversion, O scorcher of foes.

  28. Verse 28

yeṣhāṁ tvanta-gataṁ pāpaṁ janānāṁ puṇya-karmaṇām te dvandva-moha-nirmuktā bhajante māṁ dṛiḍha-vratāḥ

But those people of virtuous deeds, whose sin has come to an end, freed from the delusion of the pairs of opposites, worship Me with firm resolve.

  29. Verse 29

jarā-maraṇa-mokṣhāya mām āśhritya yatanti ye te brahma tadviduḥ kṛitsnam adhyātmaṁ karma chākhilam

Those who strive for liberation from old age and death, taking refuge in Me, know Brahman fully, the nature of the Self, and the whole of action.

  30. Verse 30

sādhibhūtādhidaivaṁ māṁ sādhiyajñaṁ cha ye viduḥ prayāṇa-kāle ’pi cha māṁ te vidur yukta-chetasaḥ

Those who know Me together with the physical realm, the divine realm, and the realm of sacrifice, even at the time of death, know Me with steadfast minds.
