  1. Verse 1

arjuna uvācha sannyāsaṁ karmaṇāṁ kṛiṣhṇa punar yogaṁ cha śhansasi yach chhreya etayor ekaṁ tan me brūhi su-niśhchitam

Arjuna said: O Krishna, you praise the renunciation of actions and also the path of action (Yoga). Tell me decisively which one of these is better.

  2. Verse 2

śhrī bhagavān uvācha sannyāsaḥ karma-yogaśh cha niḥśhreyasa-karāvubhau tayos tu karma-sannyāsāt karma-yogo viśhiṣhyate

The Blessed Lord said: Both renunciation and the path of action lead to the highest good. But of the two, the path of action is better than the renunciation of action.

  3. Verse 3

One who neither hates nor desires should be known as a true renouncer; for free from the pairs of opposites, O mighty-armed one, he is easily released from bondage.

  4. Verse 4

sānkhya-yogau pṛithag bālāḥ pravadanti na paṇḍitāḥ ekamapyāsthitaḥ samyag ubhayor vindate phalam

Children, not the wise, speak of the path of knowledge (Sankhya) and the path of action (Yoga) as different. One who is firmly established in either obtains the fruit of both.

  5. Verse 5

yat sānkhyaiḥ prāpyate sthānaṁ tad yogair api gamyate ekaṁ sānkhyaṁ cha yogaṁ cha yaḥ paśhyati sa paśhyati

The state reached by the followers of knowledge is also reached by the followers of action. One who sees that knowledge and action are one truly sees.

  6. Verse 6

sannyāsas tu mahā-bāho duḥkham āptum ayogataḥ yoga-yukto munir brahma na chireṇādhigachchhati

But renunciation, O mighty-armed one, is hard to attain without Yoga. The sage who is established in Yoga quickly reaches Brahman.

  7. Verse 7

yoga-yukto viśhuddhātmā vijitātmā jitendriyaḥ sarva-bhūtātma-bhūtātmā kurvann api na lipyate

One established in Yoga, pure in mind, with self and senses controlled, who feels his own self to be the self of all beings, is not tainted even though he acts.

  8. Verse 8

naiva kiñchit karomīti yukto manyeta tattva-vit paśhyañ śhṛiṇvan spṛiśhañjighrann aśhnangachchhan svapañśhvasan pralapan visṛijan gṛihṇann unmiṣhan nimiṣhann api indriyāṇīndriyārtheṣhu vartanta iti dhārayan

The disciplined knower of truth thinks, "I do nothing at all," even while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, moving, sleeping, and breathing, speaking, releasing, grasping, opening and closing the eyes, holding firm to the truth that it is only the senses acting upon their objects.

  9. Verse 9

pralapan visṛjan gṛhṇann unmiṣan nimiṣann api indriyāṇīndriyārtheṣu vartanta iti dhārayan

Even while speaking, releasing, grasping, opening and closing the eyes, he holds firm to the truth that it is only the senses acting upon the objects of the senses.

  10. Verse 10

One who acts, offering all actions to Brahman and abandoning attachment, is untouched by sin, as a lotus leaf is untouched by water.

  11. Verse 11

kāyena manasā buddhyā kevalair indriyair api yoginaḥ karma kurvanti saṅgaṁ tyaktvātma-śhuddhaye

The yogis perform action with the body, mind, intellect, and even the senses alone, abandoning attachment, for the purification of the self.

  12. Verse 12

yuktaḥ karma-phalaṁ tyaktvā śhāntim āpnoti naiṣhṭhikīm ayuktaḥ kāma-kāreṇa phale sakto nibadhyate

One who is disciplined, having given up the fruit of action, attains lasting peace. But the undisciplined one, attached to the fruit through desire, is bound.

  13. Verse 13

sarva-karmāṇi manasā sannyasyāste sukhaṁ vaśhī nava-dvāre pure dehī naiva kurvan na kārayan

Renouncing all actions with the mind, the self-controlled embodied soul dwells happily in the city of nine gates, neither acting nor causing action.

  14. Verse 14

na kartṛitvaṁ na karmāṇi lokasya sṛijati prabhuḥ na karma-phala-saṅyogaṁ svabhāvas tu pravartate

The Lord creates neither the agency nor the actions of people, nor their connection with the fruits of action. It is one's own nature that operates.

  15. Verse 15

nādatte kasyachit pāpaṁ na chaiva sukṛitaṁ vibhuḥ ajñānenāvṛitaṁ jñānaṁ tena muhyanti jantavaḥ

The all-pervading Lord takes on neither the sin nor the merit of anyone. Knowledge is veiled by ignorance, and by this beings are deluded.

  16. Verse 16

jñānena tu tad ajñānaṁ yeṣhāṁ nāśhitam ātmanaḥ teṣhām āditya-vaj jñānaṁ prakāśhayati tat param

But for those whose ignorance is destroyed by the knowledge of the Self, that knowledge, like the sun, reveals the Supreme.

  17. Verse 17

    tad-buddhayas tad-ātmānas tan-niṣhṭhās tat-parāyaṇāḥ gachchhantyapunar-āvṛittiṁ jñāna-nirdhūta-kalmaṣhāḥ

Those whose intellect is fixed on the Supreme, whose self is merged in It, who are devoted to It and hold It as their highest goal, reach the state of no return, their sins washed away by knowledge.

  18. Verse 18

vidyā-vinaya-sampanne brāhmaṇe gavi hastini śhuni chaiva śhva-pāke cha paṇḍitāḥ sama-darśhinaḥ

The wise see with equal vision a learned and humble brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and even one who cooks dog meat.

  19. Verse 19

ihaiva tair jitaḥ sargo yeṣhāṁ sāmye sthitaṁ manaḥ nirdoṣhaṁ hi samaṁ brahma tasmād brahmaṇi te sthitāḥ

Even here in this life, rebirth is conquered by those whose minds are established in equanimity. For Brahman is flawless and the same in all; therefore they are established in Brahman.

  20. Verse 20

na prahṛiṣhyet priyaṁ prāpya nodvijet prāpya chāpriyam sthira-buddhir asammūḍho brahma-vid brahmaṇi sthitaḥ

One who is established in Brahman, with steady understanding and free from delusion, knowing Brahman, neither rejoices on obtaining what is pleasant nor grieves on obtaining what is unpleasant.

  21. Verse 21

bāhya-sparśheṣhvasaktātmā vindatyātmani yat sukham sa brahma-yoga-yuktātmā sukham akṣhayam aśhnute

One whose self is unattached to external contacts finds the happiness that is within the Self. Such a person, with the self united to Brahman through Yoga, enjoys imperishable happiness.

  22. Verse 22

The enjoyments born of contact with sense objects are only sources of pain; they have a beginning and an end, O son of Kunti. The wise person does not delight in them.

  23. Verse 23

śhaknotīhaiva yaḥ soḍhuṁ prāk śharīra-vimokṣhaṇāt kāma-krodhodbhavaṁ vegaṁ sa yuktaḥ sa sukhī naraḥ

One who, here in this life, before the body is cast off, is able to withstand the force arising from desire and anger is disciplined, and that person is happy.

  24. Verse 24

    yo 'ntaḥ-sukho 'ntar-ārāmas tathāntar-jyotir eva yaḥ sa yogī brahma-nirvāṇaṁ brahma-bhūto 'dhigachchhati

One who finds happiness within, who delights within, and who is illumined within, that yogi, having become one with Brahman, attains the bliss of Brahman.

  25. Verse 25

    labhante brahma-nirvāṇam ṛiṣhayaḥ kṣhīṇa-kalmaṣhāḥ chhinna-dvaidhā yatātmānaḥ sarva-bhūta-hite ratāḥ

Sages whose sins are destroyed, whose doubts are dispelled, who are self-controlled and devoted to the welfare of all beings, attain the bliss of Brahman.

  26. Verse 26

    kāma-krodha-viyuktānāṁ yatīnāṁ yata-chetasām abhito brahma-nirvāṇaṁ vartate viditātmanām

For the self-controlled ascetics who are free from desire and anger and who have realized the Self, the bliss of Brahman exists on every side.

  27. Verse 27

sparśhān kṛitvā bahir bāhyānśh chakṣhuśh chaivāntare bhruvoḥ prāṇāpānau samau kṛitvā nāsābhyantara-chāriṇau yatendriya-mano-buddhir munir mokṣha-parāyaṇaḥ vigatechchhā-bhaya-krodho yaḥ sadā mukta eva saḥ

Shutting out external contacts, fixing the gaze between the eyebrows, and making even the outgoing and incoming breaths that move within the nostrils,

  28. Verse 28

yatendriya-mano-buddhir munir mokṣa-parāyaṇaḥ vigatecchā-bhaya-krodho yaḥ sadā mukta eva saḥ

the sage whose senses, mind, and intellect are controlled, who is intent on liberation, and who is free from desire, fear, and anger, is forever liberated.

  29. Verse 29

bhoktāraṁ yajña-tapasāṁ sarva-loka-maheśhvaram suhṛidaṁ sarva-bhūtānāṁ jñātvā māṁ śhāntim ṛichchhati

Knowing Me as the enjoyer of sacrifices and austerities, the great Lord of all the worlds, and the friend of all beings, one attains peace.
