  1. Verse 1

tau rajanyāṃ prabhātāyāṃ snātau hutahutāśanau | yathoktam ṛṣiṇā pūrvaṃ tatra tatrābhyagāyatām

The two, when night had brightened into dawn, having bathed and offered oblations into the sacred fire, sang here and there, as the sage had directed before.

  2. Verse 2

tāṃ sa śuśrāva kākutsthaḥ pūrvacaryāṃ tatas tataḥ | apūrvāṃ pāṭhya jātiṃ ca geyena samalaṃkṛtām

Kākutstha heard that song from place to place — the earlier career [of Rāma] — a composition hitherto unknown, both a recited class [of verse] and adorned with melody.

  3. Verse 3

pramāṇair bahubhir baddhāṃ tantrīlayasamanvitām | bālābhyāṃ rāghavaḥ śrutvā kautūhalaparo 'bhavat

Bound with many measures, endowed with string-music and rhythm — hearing it from the two boys, Rāghava was filled with curiosity.

  4. Verse 4

atha karmāntare rājā samānīya mahāmunīn | pārthivāṃś ca naravyāghraḥ paṇḍitān naigamāṃs tathā

Then, in an interval of the rite, the tiger among men, the king, having assembled the great sages, and the kings, and the learned, and the townsmen likewise,

  5. Verse 5

paurāṇikāñ śabdavito ye ca vṛddhā dvijātayaḥ | etān sarvān samānīya gātārau samaveśayat

the reciters of the ancient lore, those versed in [the science of] sound, and the aged twice-born — having assembled all these, he had the two singers seated.

  6. Verse 6

hṛṣṭā ṛṣigaṇās tatra pārthivāś ca mahaujasaḥ | pibanta iva cakṣurbhyāṃ rājānaṃ gāyakau ca tau

Delighted were the hosts of sages there, and the kings of great might, as if drinking in with their eyes both the king and those two singers.

  7. Verse 7

parasparam athocus te sarva eva samaṃ tataḥ | ubhau rāmasya sadṛśau bimbād bimbam ivoddhṛtau

Then they all said to one another, alike: "These two are the very likeness of Rāma, as one image drawn from another.

  8. Verse 8

jaṭilau yadi na syātāṃ na valkaladharau yadi | viśeṣaṃ nādhigacchāmo gāyato rāghavasya ca

Were they not matted-haired, were they not wearers of bark-garments, we should find no difference between the two as they sing and Rāghava."

  9. Verse 9

teṣāṃ saṃvadatām evaṃ śrotṝṇāṃ harṣavardhanam | geyaṃ pracakratus tatra tāv ubhau munidārakau

As they conversed thus, [the song] heightening the joy of the listeners, those two boys of the sage began the singing there.

  10. Verse 10

tataḥ pravṛttaṃ madhuraṃ gāndharvam atimānuṣam | na ca tṛptiṃ yayuḥ sarve śrotāro geya saṃpadā

Then the sweet gāndharva music, more than human, began; and all the listeners did not come to satiety with the richness of the song.

  11. Verse 11

pravṛttam āditaḥ pūrvaṃ sargān nāradadarśanāt | tataḥ prabhṛti sargāṃś ca yāvadviṃśaty agāyatām

It began from the very beginning — the cantos from the sight of Nārada onward; and from that point on they sang the cantos, up to twenty.

  12. Verse 12

tato 'parāhṇasamaye rāghavaḥ samabhāṣata | śrutvā viṃśatisargāṃs tān bharataṃ bhrātṛvatsalaḥ

Then, at the hour of afternoon, Rāghava, affectionate to his brothers, having heard those twenty cantos, said to Bharata:

  13. Verse 13

aṣṭādaśa sahasrāṇi suvarṇasya mahātmanoḥ | dadasva śīghraṃ kākutstha bālayor mā vṛthā śramaḥ

"Eighteen thousand pieces of gold give quickly, O Kākutstha, to those two great souls; let their labor not be in vain."

  14. Verse 14

dīyamānaṃ suvarṇaṃ tan nāgṛhṇītāṃ kuśīlavau | ūcatuś ca mahātmānau kim aneneti vismitau

That gold, being given, the two — Kuśa and Lava — did not accept; and the two great souls, amazed, said: "What [is to be done] with this?

  15. Verse 15

vanyena phalamūlena niratu svo vanaukasau | suvarṇena hiraṇyena kiṃ kariṣyāvahe vane

We two forest-dwellers are content with the forest's fruits and roots; what shall we do with gold and wrought gold in the forest?"

  16. Verse 16

tathā tayoḥ prabruvatoḥ kautūhalasamanvitāḥ | śrotāraś caiva rāmaś ca sarva eva suvismitāḥ

As the two spoke thus, filled with wonder, the listeners and Rāma — all of them — were greatly amazed.

  17. Verse 17

tasya caivāgamaṃ rāmaḥ kāvyasya śrotum utsukaḥ | papraccha tau mahātejās tāv ubhau munidārakau

And Rāma, eager to hear the origin of that poem, the mightily radiant one, asked those two boys of the sage:

  18. Verse 18

kiṃpramāṇam idaṃ kāvyaṃ kā pratiṣṭhā mahātmanaḥ | kartā kāvyasya mahataḥ ko vāsau munipuṃgavaḥ

"Of what extent is this poem, and what the standing of its great-souled [author]? Who is the maker of this great poem, and who is that bull among sages?"

  19. Verse 19

pṛcchantaṃ rāghavaṃ vākyam ūcatur munidārakau | vālmīkir bhagavān kartā saṃprāpto yajñasaṃnidhim | yenedaṃ caritaṃ tubhyam aśeṣaṃ saṃpradarśitam

To Rāghava, who asked thus, the two boys of the sage spoke: "The revered Vālmīki is the author; he has come to the vicinity of the sacrifice — he by whom this whole story has been shown to you in full.

  20. Verse 20

ādiprabhṛti rājendra pañcasarga śatāni ca | pratiṣṭhā jīvitaṃ yāvat tāvad rājañ śubhāśubham

From the very beginning, O lord of kings, [it runs to] five hundred cantos; [it tells] the whole course and life [of Rāma], as far as it extends, O king, both the fair and the foul.

  21. Verse 21

yadi buddhiḥ kṛtā rājañ śravaṇāya mahāratha | karmāntare kṣaṇī hūtas tac chṛṇuṣva sahānujaḥ

If your resolve is made, O king, O great chariot-warrior, to hear it — being summoned in this interval of the rite, at your leisure, hear it, together with your younger brothers."

  22. Verse 22

bāḍham ity abravīd rāmas tau cānujñāpya rāghavam | prahṛṣṭau jagmatur vāsaṃ yatrāsau munipuṃgavaḥ

"So be it," said Rāma; and the two, taking leave of Rāghava, went, delighted, to the dwelling where that bull among sages was.

  23. Verse 23

rāmo 'pi munibhiḥ sārdhaṃ pārthivaiś ca mahātmabhiḥ | śrutvā tad gītamādhuryaṃ karmaśālām upāgamat

And Rāma too, together with the sages and the great-souled kings, having heard the sweetness of that song, went to the hall of rites.
