Verse 1
tathā vṛtravadhaṃ sarvam akhilena sa lakṣmaṇaḥ | kathayitvā naraśreṣṭhaḥ kathāśeṣam upākramat
Having thus told the whole slaying of Vṛtra in its entirety, that best of men, Lakṣmaṇa, began the remainder of the tale:
Verse 2
"Then, when the mighty Vṛtra, the terror of the gods, was slain, Śakra, enveloped by brahminicide, the slayer of Vṛtra, did not regain his senses.
Verse 3
so 'ntam āśritya lokānāṃ naṣṭasaṃjño vicetanaḥ | kālaṃ tatrāvasat kaṃ cid veṣṭamāno yathoragaḥ
Resorting to the end of the worlds, his senses lost and insensate, he dwelt there for some time, writhing like a serpent.
Verse 4
atha naṣṭe sahasrākṣe udvignam abhavaj jagat | bhūmiś ca dhvastasaṃkāśā niḥsnehā śuṣkakānanā
Now when the thousand-eyed one had vanished, the world became distressed; and the earth [grew] as if ruined, loveless, its forests dried up.
Verse 5
niḥsrotasaś cāmbuvāhā hradāś ca saritas tathā | saṃkṣobhaś caiva sattvānām anāvṛṣṭikṛto 'bhavat
The cloud water-bearers were without streams, and the lakes and rivers likewise; and there arose a convulsion of beings, caused by the drought.
Verse 6
kṣīyamāṇe tu loke 'smin saṃbhrāntamanasaḥ surāḥ | yad uktaṃ viṣṇunā pūrvaṃ taṃ yajñaṃ samupānayan
As this world was wasting away, the gods, with bewildered minds, brought forward that sacrifice which had been spoken of before by Viṣṇu.
Verse 7
tataḥ sarve suragaṇāḥ sopādhyāyāḥ saharṣibhiḥ | taṃ deśaṃ sahitā jagmur yatrendro bhayamohitaḥ
Then all the hosts of gods, with their teachers and with the sages, went together to that region where Indra was, bewildered by fear.
Verse 8
te tu dṛṣṭvā sahasrākṣaṃ mohitaṃ brahmahatyayā | taṃ puraskṛtya deveśam aśvamedhaṃ pracakrire
And they, seeing the thousand-eyed one bewildered by brahminicide, placing that lord of gods in front, performed the Aśvamedha.
Verse 9
tato 'śvamedhaḥ sumahān mahendrasya mahātmanaḥ | vavṛdhe brahmahatyāyāḥ pāvanārthaṃ nareśvara
Then the very great Aśvamedha of the great-souled Mahendra was accomplished, for the purifying from brahminicide, O lord of men.
Verse 10
tato yajñasamāptau tu brahmahatyā mahātmanaḥ | abhigamyābravīd vākyaṃ kva me sthānaṃ vidhāsyatha
Then, at the completion of the sacrifice, the Brahminicide of that great soul, approaching, said these words: 'Where will you provide a place for me?'
Verse 11
te tām ūcus tato devās tuṣṭāḥ prītisamanvitāḥ | caturdhā vibhajātmānam ātmanaiva durāsade
Then the gods, pleased and filled with affection, said to her: 'Divide yourself of your own accord into four parts, O one hard to approach.'
Verse 12
devānāṃ bhāṣitaṃ śrutvā brahmahatyā mahātmanām | saṃnidhau sthānam anyatra varayām āsa durvasā
Hearing the words of those great-souled gods, the Brahminicide, dire to dwell with, asked that a place be allotted elsewhere, in their presence.
Verse 13
ekenāṃśena vatsyāmi pūrṇodāsu nadīṣu vai | dvitīyena tu vṛkṣeṣu satyam etad bravīmi vaḥ
'With one portion I shall dwell in the full-flowing rivers; with the second, in the trees — this truth I tell you.
Verse 14
yo 'yam aṃśas tṛtīyo me strīṣu yauvanaśāliṣu | trirātraṃ darpaparṇāsu vasiṣye darpaghātinī
This third portion of mine [shall abide] among women flourishing in youth, for three nights — I, the destroyer of pride, shall dwell there.
This verse gives the traditional etiology whereby a share of the brahminicide lodges in women as the three-night menstrual impurity; the wording (darpaparṇāsu) is obscure and rendered by sense.
Verse 15
hantāro brāhmaṇān ye tu prekṣāpūrvam adūṣakān | tāṃś caturthena bhāgena saṃśrayiṣye surarṣabhāḥ
And those who deliberately slay brahmins who are no offenders — them I shall resort to with my fourth part, O bulls among gods.'
Verse 16
pratyūcus tāṃ tato devā yathā vadasi durvase | tathā bhavatu tat sarvaṃ sādhayasva yathepsitam
Then the gods replied to her: 'As you say, O dire-dwelling one, so let it all be; accomplish it as you desire.'
Verse 17
tataḥ prītyānvitā devāḥ sahasrākṣaṃ vavandire | vijvaraḥ pūtapāpmā ca vāsavaḥ samapadyata
Then the gods, filled with affection, paid homage to the thousand-eyed one; and Vāsava became free of distress and purified of sin.
Verse 18
praśāntaṃ ca jagat sarvaṃ sahasrākṣe pratiṣṭhate | yajñaṃ cādbhutasaṃkāśaṃ tadā śakro 'bhyapūjayat
And the whole world became tranquil, re-established in the thousand-eyed one; and Śakra then completed the sacrifice of wondrous aspect.
Verse 19
īdṛśo hy aśvamedhasya prabhāvo raghunandana | yajasva sumahābhāga hayamedhena pārthiva
Such indeed is the power of the Aśvamedha, O delight of the Raghus; sacrifice, O greatly blessed king, with the horse-sacrifice."
