  1. Verse 1

tathā tu karuṇaṃ tasya dvijasya paridevitam | śuśrāva rāghavaḥ sarvaṃ duḥkhaśokasamanvitam

Thus the piteous lamentation of that brahmin, full of pain and grief, Rāghava heard in its entirety.

  2. Verse 2

sa duḥkhena susaṃtapto mantriṇaḥ samupāhvayat | vasiṣṭhaṃ vāmadevaṃ ca bhrātṝṃś ca sahanaigamān

Sorely burned with grief, he summoned his ministers — Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva, and his brothers, together with the townsmen.

  3. Verse 3

tato dvijā vasiṣṭhena sārdham aṣṭau praveśitāḥ | rājānaṃ devasaṃkāśaṃ vardhasveti tato 'bruvan

Then eight brahmins, together with Vasiṣṭha, were ushered in; and they said to the king, godlike in aspect, "May you prosper!"

  4. Verse 4

mārkaṇḍeyo 'tha maudgalyo vāmadevaś ca kāśyapaḥ | kātyāyano 'tha jābālir gautamo nāradas tathā

Mārkaṇḍeya and Maudgalya, Vāmadeva and Kāśyapa, Kātyāyana and Jābāli, Gautama, and Nārada likewise —

  5. Verse 5

ete dvijarṣabhāḥ sarve āganeṣūpaveśitāḥ | mantriṇo naigamāś caiva yathārham anukūlataḥ

all these bulls among brahmins were seated upon seats; and the ministers and townsmen too were seated fittingly, according to their rank.

  6. Verse 6

teṣāṃ samupaviṣṭānāṃ sarveṣāṃ dīptatejasām | raghavaḥ sarvam ācaṣṭe dvijo yasmāt praroditi

When all those of blazing splendor were seated, Rāghava told them everything — the reason the brahmin wept.

  7. Verse 7

tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rājño dīnasya nāradaḥ | pratyuvāca śubhaṃ vākyam ṛṣīṇāṃ saṃnidhau nṛpam

Hearing those words of the sorrowing king, Nārada, in the presence of the sages, replied to the king with an auspicious speech:

  8. Verse 8

śṛṇu rājan yathākāle prāpto 'yaṃ bālasaṃkṣayaḥ | śrutvā kartavyatāṃ vīra kuruṣva raghunandana

"Hear, O king, how in due course this death of a child has come about; and having heard what must be done, do it, O hero, O delight of the Raghus.

  9. Verse 9

purā kṛtayuge rāma brāhmaṇā vai tapasvinaḥ | abrāhmaṇas tadā rājan na tapasvī kathaṃ cana

Of old, O Rāma, in the Kṛta age, brahmins alone were ascetics; a non-brahmin at that time, O king, was in no way an ascetic.

  10. Verse 10

tasmin yuge prajvalite brahmabhūte anāvṛte | amṛtyavas tadā sarve jajñire dīrghadarśinaḥ

In that age — resplendent, become one with the sacred, unobscured — all were then born free of death and far-seeing.

  11. Verse 11

tatas tretāyugaṃ nāma mānavānāṃ vapuṣmatām | kṣatriyā yatra jāyante pūrveṇa tapasānvitāḥ

Then came the age named Tretā, of men possessed of strong bodies, in which the kṣatriyas are born, endowed, as before, with austerity.

  12. Verse 12

vīryeṇa tapasā caiva te 'dhikāḥ pūrvajanmani | mānavā ye mahātmānas tasmiṃs tretāyuge yuge

In valor and in austerity they were pre-eminent, as in a former birth — those men who were great souls in that Tretā age.

  13. Verse 13

brahmakṣatraṃ tu tat sarvaṃ yat pūrvam aparaṃ ca yat | yugayor ubhayor āsīt samavīryasamanvitam

That whole order of brahman and kṣatra, both the earlier and the later, in both ages was endowed with equal valor.

  14. Verse 14

apaśyantas tu te sarve viśeṣam adhikaṃ tataḥ | sthāpanaṃ cakrire tatra cāturvarṇyasya sarvataḥ

But perceiving no surpassing distinction between them thereupon, they established there, in every respect, the ordering of the four varṇas.

  15. Verse 15

adharmaḥ pādam ekaṃ tu pātayat pṛthivītale | adharmeṇa hi saṃyuktās tena mandābhavan dvijāḥ

But unrighteousness set one foot down upon the surface of the earth; and joined with unrighteousness, the twice-born were thereby brought low.

  16. Verse 16

tataḥ prāduṣkṛtaṃ pūrvam āyuṣaḥ pariniṣṭhitam | śubhāny evācaraṃl lokāḥ satyadharmaparāyaṇāḥ

Then a fixed limit of lifespan was ordained as before; and the people, devoted to truth and righteousness, performed only auspicious deeds.

The first line is elliptical in the text; rendered according to the intelligible sense.

  17. Verse 17

tretāyuge tv avartanta brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyaś ca ye | tapo 'tapyanta te sarve śuśrūṣām apare janāḥ

In the Tretā age, the brahmins and the kṣatriyas who existed — all these practiced austerity; and the other folk practiced dutiful service.

  18. Verse 18

sa dharmaḥ paramas teṣāṃ vaiśyaśūdram athāgamat | pūjāṃ ca sarvavarṇānāṃ śūdrāś cakrur viśeṣataḥ

That supreme duty of theirs then passed to the vaiśya and the śūdra; and the śūdras especially rendered honor to all the varṇas.

  19. Verse 19

tataḥ pādam adharmasya dvitīyam avatārayat | tato dvāparasaṃkhyā sā yugasya samajāyata

Then unrighteousness brought down a second foot; and thereupon arose that reckoning of the age called Dvāpara.

  20. Verse 20

tasmin dvāparasaṃkhye tu vartamāne yugakṣaye | adharmaś cānṛtaṃ caiva vavṛdhe puruṣarṣabha

In that age reckoned as Dvāpara, as the decline of the age went forward, unrighteousness and untruth grew, O bull among men.

  21. Verse 21

tasmin dvāparasaṃkhyāte tapo vaiśyān samāviśat | na śūdro labhate dharmam ugraṃ taptaṃ nararṣabha

In that age counted as Dvāpara, austerity entered among the vaiśyas; the śūdra does not obtain the practice of fierce, heated austerity, O bull among men.

  22. Verse 22

hīnavarṇo naraśreṣṭha tapyate sumahat tapaḥ | bhaviṣyā śūdrayonyāṃ hi tapaścaryā kalau yuge

One of lower varṇa, O best of men, [comes to] practice great austerity [only later]; for the practice of austerity by one of śūdra birth shall come to be [proper] in the Kali age.

The verse looks ahead to the Kali age, when such austerity by a śūdra would be in season; in the present (Tretā) age it is out of season.

  23. Verse 23

adharmaḥ paramo rāma dvāpare śūdradhāritaḥ | sa vai viṣayaparyante tava rājan mahātapāḥ | śūdras tapyati durbuddhis tena bālavadho hy ayam

Supreme is the unrighteousness, O Rāma, when in the Dvāpara fashion it is undertaken by a śūdra. For indeed at the border of your realm, O king, a śūdra of great austerity and of evil mind is practicing penance — and through that has come this slaying of a child.

  24. Verse 24

yo hy adharmam akāryaṃ vā viṣaye pārthivasya hi | karoti rājaśārdūla pure vā durmatir naraḥ | kṣipraṃ hi narakaṃ yāti sa ca rājā na saṃśayaḥ

For the man of evil mind who commits unrighteousness or a forbidden deed in a king's realm or in his city, O tiger among kings, swiftly goes to hell — and that king too, without doubt.

  25. Verse 25

sa tvaṃ puruṣaśārdūla mārgasva viṣayaṃ svakam | duṣkṛtaṃ yatra paśyethās tatra yatnaṃ samācara

So do you, O tiger among men, search through your own realm; and where you perceive the misdeed, there apply your effort.

  26. Verse 26

evaṃ te dharmavṛddhiś ca nṛṇāṃ cāyurvivardhanam | bhaviṣyati naraśreṣṭha bālasyāsya ca jīvitam

Thus shall there be for you an increase of righteousness and a lengthening of the lives of men, O best of men, and the restoration to life of this child."
