atha saṃsmārayām āsa rāghavaṃ mātalis tadā | ajānann iva kiṃ vīra tvam enam anuvartase
Then Mātali reminded Rāghava: "As though you knew it not, O hero — why do you contend with him thus?"
Verse 2
visṛjāsmai vadhāya tvam astraṃ paitāmahaṃ prabho | vināśakālaḥ kathito yaḥ suraiḥ so 'dya vartate
"Loose upon him for his slaying, O lord, the weapon of the Grandsire (Brahmā); the hour of destruction foretold by the gods is now at hand."
Verse 3
tataḥ saṃsmārito rāmas tena vākyena mātaleḥ | jagrāha sa śaraṃ dīptaṃ niśvasantam ivoragam
Thus reminded by Mātali's words, Rāma took up a blazing arrow that hissed like a serpent.
Verse 4
yam asmai prathamaṃ prādād agastyo bhagavān ṛṣiḥ | brahmadattaṃ mahad bāṇam amoghaṃ yudhi vīryavān
It was the great, unerring shaft, bestowed by Brahmā, which the venerable sage Agastya had first given him, the valiant one, for the fight.
Verse 5
brahmaṇā nirmitaṃ pūrvam indrārtham amitaujasā | dattaṃ surapateḥ pūrvaṃ trilokajayakāṅkṣiṇaḥ
Fashioned of old by Brahmā of immeasurable might for Indra's sake, it had been given long ago to the lord of the gods when he sought to conquer the three worlds.

like the smoking fire of doom, flaming like a venomous serpent, swift to shatter hosts of chariots, elephants and horses,

a breaker of gates and iron bars and of very mountains, its body wet with manifold blood and smeared with marrow, most dreadful,
Verse 10

hard as adamant, loud-roaring, terrible in many a battle, striking terror into all, fearsome, hissing like a serpent,
Verse 11
kaṅkagṛdhrabalānāṃ ca gomāyugaṇarakṣasām | nityaṃ bhakṣapradaṃ yuddhe yamarūpaṃ bhayāvaham
ever a giver of food in war to herons, vultures, flocks of crows, packs of jackals and rākṣasas, fearful, in the very form of Yama,

the delight of the lords of monkeys, the undoing of rākṣasas, winged with the various fair and bright plumes of Garuḍa —
Verse 13
tam uttameṣuṃ lokānām ikṣvākubhayanāśanam | dviṣatāṃ kīrtiharaṇaṃ praharṣakaram ātmanaḥ
that peerless shaft, the dispeller of the Ikṣvākus' fear for the worlds, the robber of the glory of foes, the bringer of joy to himself —
Verse 14

having consecrated that great arrow with mantras, the mighty Rāma then, by the rite ordained in the Vedas, fitted the strong one to his bow.

Enraged at Rāvaṇa, drawing the bow hard to its full, utterly intent, he loosed that shaft that strikes to the vitals.
Verse 16
sa vajra iva durdharṣo vajrabāhuvisarjitaḥ | kṛtānta iva cāvāryo nyapatad rāvaṇorasi
Irresistible as the thunderbolt hurled by the thunderbolt-armed (Indra), unstoppable as Fate itself, it fell upon Rāvaṇa's breast.

Having slain Rāvaṇa, its hue reddened with blood, the arrow, its work done, quietly returned again to its own quiver.
Verse 20

Verse 22
taṃ dṛṣṭvā patitaṃ bhūmau hataśeṣā niśācarāḥ | hatanāthā bhayatrastāḥ sarvataḥ saṃpradudruvuḥ
Seeing him fallen to the ground, the surviving night-rangers, their lord slain and gripped by terror, fled in all directions.

Roaring, the tree-wielding monkeys fell upon them, beholding the slaying of the Ten-necked one and the victory of Rāghava.

Harried by the exultant monkeys, they fled in fear toward Laṅkā, their lord gone, their faces piteous and streaming with tears.
Verse 25

Then in the sky the gentle drums of the gods resounded, and a wind bearing celestial fragrance blew there most sweetly.

And a rain of flowers fell then from the sky to earth, strewing Rāghava's chariot — lovely blossoms hard to obtain.

Then the hosts of the Maruts grew calm, the quarters became clear, the sky turned spotless; the earth ceased to quake, the winds ceased to blow, and the sun shone with a steady light.

Then Sugrīva, Vibhīṣaṇa and the other close friends, with Lakṣmaṇa, gathering joyfully, honoured as is fitting Rāghava, radiant with victory and beauteous in the fight.

sa tu nihataripuḥ sthirapratijñaḥ; svajanabalābhivṛto raṇe rarāja | raghukulanṛpanandano mahaujās; tridaśagaṇair abhisaṃvṛto yathendraḥ
His foe slain, his vow kept firm, surrounded in the battle by his own kin and host, the mighty delight of the Raghu line shone forth, encompassed by the throngs of the thirty gods as Indra is encompassed.
