the branches of which on all sides stretched out a hundred yojanas — the tree to whose branch the mighty Garuḍa once came to feed, having taken a huge elephant and a tortoise.
Verse 29

Then that best of birds, the mighty Suparṇa, by his weight suddenly broke off that leaf-laden branch of it.

tatra vaikhānasā māṣā vālakhilyā marīcipāḥ | ajā babhūvur dhūmrāś ca saṃgatāḥ paramarṣayaḥ
There the Vaikhānasa, Māṣa, Vālakhilya, and Marīcipa sages, the supreme sages assembled (upon it), became distressed and ashen (with alarm).
The phrase 'ajā babhūvur dhūmrāḥ' is obscure; rendered by sense in keeping with the episode in which the Vālakhilyas hang from the branch.

ekapādena dharmātmā bhakṣayitvā tad āmiṣam | niṣādaviṣayaṃ hatvā śākhayā patagottamaḥ | praharṣam atulaṃ lebhe mokṣayitvā mahāmunīn
With but one foot the righteous best of birds devoured that flesh; and smiting the land of the Niṣādas with the branch, he gained matchless joy, having delivered the great sages.
Verse 33
sa tenaiva praharṣeṇa dviguṇīkṛtavikramaḥ | amṛtānayanārthaṃ vai cakāra matimān matim
By that very joy his prowess was doubled, and the wise one made up his mind to fetch the nectar (amṛta).
Verse 34
ayojālāni nirmathya bhittvā ratnagṛhaṃ varam | mahendrabhavanād guptam ājahārāmṛtaṃ tataḥ
Shattering the iron nets and breaking open the excellent jewel-chamber, he then carried off the guarded nectar from the dwelling of Mahendra.
Verse 35
taṃ maharṣigaṇair juṣṭaṃ suparṇakṛtalakṣaṇam | nāmnā subhadraṃ nyagrodhaṃ dadarśa dhanadānujaḥ
That nyagrodha, frequented by hosts of great sages, bearing the mark made by Suparṇa, named Subhadra, the younger brother of the Giver-of-wealth beheld.
Verse 36

Having reached the far shore of the ocean, lord of rivers, he saw a hermitage in a solitary, holy, delightful spot within the forest.
Verse 37
tatra kṛṣṇājinadharaṃ jaṭāvalkaladhāriṇam | dadarśa niyatāhāraṃ mārīcaṃ nāma rākṣasaṃ
There he saw a rākṣasa named Mārīca, wearing a black antelope-skin, bearing matted locks and bark garments, of controlled diet.
Verse 38
sa rāvaṇaḥ samāgamya vidhivat tena rakṣasā | tataḥ paścād idaṃ vākyam abravīd vākyakovidaḥ
Rāvaṇa, having duly met with that rākṣasa, thereafter — skilled in speech — spoke this word.
