Verse 1
tad drumāṇāṃ śilānāṃ ca varṣaṃ prāṇaharaṃ mahat | pratijagrāha dharmātmā rāghavas tīkṣṇasāyakaiḥ
That great, life-destroying rain of trees and boulders the righteous Rāghava received with his sharp arrows.
Verse 2
pratigṛhya ca tad varaṃ nimīlita ivarṣabhaḥ | rāmaḥ krodhaṃ paraṃ bheje vadhārthaṃ sarvarakṣasām
Having received that shower, Rāma — like a bull with eyes half-closed against it — gave himself over to supreme wrath, for the slaying of all the rākṣasas.
Verse 3
tataḥ krodhasamāviṣṭaḥ pradīpta iva tejasā | śarair abhyakirat sainyaṃ sarvataḥ sahadūṣaṇam
Then, filled with wrath and blazing as if with his own fiery splendour, he covered the army on every side with arrows, Dūṣaṇa along with it.
Verse 4
tataḥ senāpatiḥ kruddho dūṣaṇaḥ śatrudūṣaṇaḥ | jagrāha giriśṛṅgābhaṃ parighaṃ romaharṣaṇam
Then the enraged general Dūṣaṇa, tormentor of foes, seized a bludgeon (parigha) like a mountain-peak, a thing to make the hair bristle:
Verse 5
veṣṭitaṃ kāñcanaiḥ paṭṭair devasainyābhimardanam | āyasaiḥ śaṅkubhis tīkṣṇaiḥ kīrṇaṃ paravasokṣitām
bound about with bands of gold, a crusher of the hosts of the gods, studded with sharp iron spikes and smeared with the fat of foes;
Verse 6
vajrāśanisamasparśaṃ paragopuradāraṇam | taṃ mahoragasaṃkāśaṃ pragṛhya parighaṃ raṇe | dūṣaṇo 'bhyapatad rāmaṃ krūrakarmā niśācaraḥ
its touch like the thunderbolt and the lightning, a render of enemies' city-gates. Grasping in the fray that bludgeon resembling a great serpent, Dūṣaṇa, the night-ranger of cruel deeds, rushed upon Rāma.
Verse 7
tasyābhipatamānasya dūṣaṇasya sa rāghavaḥ | dvābhyāṃ śarābhyāṃ ciccheda sahastābharaṇau bhujau
As Dūṣaṇa charged, Rāghava with two arrows severed both his arms, their hand-ornaments still upon them.
Verse 8
bhraṣṭas tasya mahākāyaḥ papāta raṇamūrdhani | parighaś chinnahastasya śakradhvaja ivāgrataḥ
The huge bludgeon slipped from the one whose hands were cut away and fell at the front of the battle, like Indra's banner (toppling) before him.
Verse 9
sa karābhyāṃ vikīrṇābhyāṃ papāta bhuvi dūṣaṇaḥ | viṣāṇābhyāṃ viśīrṇābhyāṃ manasvīva mahāgajaḥ
With his two arms shorn away, Dūṣaṇa fell to the earth, like a proud great elephant with both its tusks shattered.
Verse 10
dṛṣṭvā taṃ patitaṃ bhūmau dūṣaṇaṃ nihataṃ raṇe | sādhu sādhv iti kākutsthaṃ sarvabhūtāny apūjayan
Seeing Dūṣaṇa fallen to the earth, slain in the battle, all beings honoured Kākutstha with cries of 'Well done! Well done!'
Verse 11
etasminn antare kruddhās trayaḥ senāgrayāyinaḥ | saṃhatyābhyadravan rāmaṃ mṛtyupāśāvapāśitāḥ | mahākapālaḥ sthūlākṣaḥ pramāthī ca mahābalaḥ
Meanwhile three leaders of the host, enraged, bound as if by the noose of death, charged together upon Rāma: Mahākapāla, Sthūlākṣa, and the mighty Pramāthin.
Verse 12
mahākapālo vipulaṃ śūlam udyamya rākṣasaḥ | sthūlākṣaḥ paṭṭiśaṃ gṛhya pramāthī ca paraśvadham
The rākṣasa Mahākapāla raising a broad pike (śūla), Sthūlākṣa taking up a paṭṭiśa, and Pramāthin a battle-axe (paraśvadha).
Verse 13
dṛṣṭvaivāpatatas tāṃs tu rāghavaḥ sāyakaiḥ śitaiḥ | tīkṣṇāgraiḥ pratijagrāha saṃprāptān atithīn iva
Seeing them rushing upon him, Rāghava received them with keen, sharp-pointed arrows, as one receives guests who have arrived.
Verse 14
mahākapālasya śiraś ciccheda raghunaṅganaḥ | asaṃkhyeyais tu bāṇaughaiḥ pramamātha pramāthinam
The delight of the Raghus severed Mahākapāla's head, and with countless floods of arrows he crushed Pramāthin.
Verse 15
sthūlākṣasyākṣiṇī tīkṣṇaiḥ pūrayām āsa sāyakaiḥ | sa papāta hato bhūmau viṭapīva mahādrumaḥ
He filled Sthūlākṣa's two eyes with sharp arrows; slain, he fell to the earth like a great branching tree.
Verse 16
tataḥ pāvakasaṃkāśair hemavajravibhūṣitaiḥ | jaghanaśeṣaṃ tejasvī tasya sainyasya sāyakaiḥ
Then with arrows resembling fire, adorned with gold and adamant, the radiant one (struck down) what remained of that army.
Verse 17
te rukmapuṅkhā viśikhāḥ sadhūmā iva pāvakāḥ | nijaghnus tāni rakṣāṃsi vajrā iva mahādrumān
Those gold-feathered shafts, like fires with smoke, struck down those rākṣasas as thunderbolts (strike) great trees.
Verse 18
rakṣasāṃ tu śataṃ rāmaḥ śatenaikena karṇinā | sahasraṃ ca sahasreṇa jaghāna raṇamūrdhani
A hundred of the rākṣasas Rāma slew with a single hundred-barbed shaft, and a thousand with a thousand, at the head of the battle.
Verse 19
tair bhinnavarmābharaṇāś chinnabhinnaśarāsanāḥ | nipetuḥ śoṇitādigdhā dharaṇyāṃ rajanīcarāḥ
By these their armour and ornaments were broken, their bows snapped and split, and the night-rangers fell to the ground smeared with blood.
Verse 20
tair muktakeśaiḥ samare patitaiḥ śoṇitokṣitaiḥ | āstīrṇā vasudhā kṛtsnā mahāvediḥ kuśair iva
With these fallen in the battle, their hair loosened and drenched in blood, the whole earth was strewn as a great sacrificial altar is strewn with kuśa grass.
Verse 21
kṣaṇena tu mahāghoraṃ vanaṃ nihatarākṣasaṃ | babhūva niraya prakhyaṃ māṃsaśoṇitakardamam
In a moment that most terrible forest, with its rākṣasas slain, became like a hell, a mire of flesh and blood.
Verse 22
caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasāṃ bhīmakarmaṇām | hatāny ekena rāmeṇa mānuṣeṇa padātinā
Fourteen thousand rākṣasas of fearsome deeds were slain by Rāma alone, a man on foot.
Verse 23
tasya sainyasya sarvasya kharaḥ śeṣo mahārathaḥ | rākṣasas triśirāś caiva rāmaś ca ripusūdanaḥ
Of all that army there remained Khara the great chariot-warrior, the rākṣasa Triśiras, and Rāma the slayer of foes.
Verse 24
tatas tu tad bhīmabalaṃ mahāhave; samīkṣya rāmeṇa hataṃ balīyasā | rathena rāmaṃ mahatā kharas tataḥ; samāsasādendra ivodyatāśaniḥ
Then, seeing that fearsome force slain by the mightier Rāma in the great battle, Khara advanced upon Rāma in his great chariot, like Indra with uplifted thunderbolt.
