tato daśāhe 'tigate kṛtaśauco nṛpātmajaḥ | dvādaśe 'hani saṃprāpte śrāddhakarmāṇy akārayat

Then, when the ten days were past, the prince, having performed the purification, when the twelfth day came, had the funerary offerings performed.

  2. Verse 2

brāhmaṇebhyo dadau ratnaṃ dhanam annaṃ ca puṣkalam | bāstikaṃ bahuśuklaṃ ca gāś cāpi śataśas tathā

He gave to the brahmins jewels and abundant wealth and food, goats and much white cloth, and cattle too by the hundred.

  3. Verse 3

dāsīdāsaṃ ca yānaṃ ca veśmāni sumahānti ca | brāhmaṇebhyo dadau putro rājñas tasyaurdhvadaihikam

Maidservants and menservants, carriages and very great houses the son gave to the brahmins for the king's hereafter.

  4. Verse 4

tataḥ prabhātasamaye divase 'tha trayodaśe | vilalāpa mahābāhur bharataḥ śokamūrchitaḥ

Then, at daybreak on the thirteenth day, the mighty-armed Bharata lamented, swooning with grief.

  5. Verse 5

śabdāpihitakaṇṭhaś ca śodhanārtham upāgataḥ | citāmūle pitur vākyam idam āha suduḥkhitaḥ

His throat choked by his own cries, come to gather the ashes, at the foot of the pyre he spoke this word to his father in bitter grief:

  6. Verse 6

tāta yasmin niṣṛṣṭo 'haṃ tvayā bhrātari rāghave | tasmin vanaṃ pravrajite śūnye tyakto 'smy ahaṃ tvayā

"Father, he to whom you entrusted me, my brother Raghava — he being gone to the forest, I am left forsaken by you in this emptiness."

  7. Verse 7

yathāgatir anāthāyāḥ putraḥ pravrājito vanam | tām ambāṃ tāta kausalyāṃ tyaktvā tvaṃ kva gato nṛpa

"Her son banished to the forest, and she left helpless — forsaking that mother, Kausalya, whither have you gone, O king?"

  8. Verse 8

dṛṣṭvā bhasmāruṇaṃ tac ca dagdhāsthisthānamaṇḍalam | pituḥ śarīra nirvāṇaṃ niṣṭanan viṣasāda ha

Beholding that circle of ground reddened with ashes where the charred bones lay, the extinguished body of his father, he lamented aloud and sank down.

  9. Verse 9

sa tu dṛṣṭvā rudan dīnaḥ papāta dharaṇītale | utthāpyamānaḥ śakrasya yantra dhvaja iva cyutaḥ

Seeing it, weeping, wretched, he fell to the ground; raised up, he was like the fallen mechanism of Indra's banner-staff.

  10. Verse 10

abhipetus tataḥ sarve tasyāmātyāḥ śucivratam | antakāle nipatitaṃ yayātim ṛṣayo yathā

Then all his ministers ran up to him of pure vows, as the sages ran to Yayati fallen at the end of his time.

  11. Verse 11

śatrughnaś cāpi bharataṃ dṛṣṭvā śokapariplutam | visaṃjño nyapatad bhūmau bhūmipālam anusmaran

Shatrughna too, seeing Bharata drowned in grief, fell senseless to the ground, remembering the lord of the earth.

  12. Verse 12

unmatta iva niścetā vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ | smṛtvā pitur guṇāṅgāni tāni tāni tadā tadā

Like one distraught, out of his senses, he lamented in bitter grief, recalling, one by one, those several virtues of his father.

  13. Verse 13

mantharā prabhavas tīvraḥ kaikeyīgrāhasaṃkulaḥ | varadānamayo 'kṣobhyo 'majjayac chokasāgaraḥ

"Arising from Manthara, fierce, swollen with the sea-monster that is Kaikeyi, made all of the granting of boons, unassailable — that ocean of grief has drowned us."

  14. Verse 14

sukumāraṃ ca bālaṃ ca satataṃ lālitaṃ tvayā | kva tāta bharataṃ hitvā vilapantaṃ gato bhavān

"Tender and but a child, cherished ever by you — forsaking Bharata who laments, whither, father, have you gone?"

  15. Verse 15

nanu bhojyeṣu pāneṣu vastreṣv ābharaṇeṣu ca | pravārayasi naḥ sarvāṃs tan naḥ ko 'dya kariṣyati

"Was it not you who indulged us all in foods and drinks, in garments and ornaments? Who will do that for us now?"

  16. Verse 16

avadāraṇa kāle tu pṛthivī nāvadīryate | vihīnā yā tvayā rājñā dharmajñena mahātmanā

"At the hour for splitting, the earth splits not asunder, bereft as she is of you, a king knowing righteousness, a great soul."

  17. Verse 17

pitari svargam āpanne rāme cāraṇyam āśrite | kiṃ me jīvita sāmarthyaṃ pravekṣyāmi hutāśanam

"My father gone to heaven, and Rama betaken to the forest, what strength to live have I? I shall enter the fire."

  18. Verse 18

hīno bhrātrā ca pitrā ca śūnyām ikṣvākupālitām | ayodhyāṃ na pravekṣyāmi pravekṣyāmi tapovanam

"Bereft of brother and of father, I shall not enter the empty Ayodhya that the Ikshvakus have ruled; I shall enter the forest of austerity."

  19. Verse 19

tayor vilapitaṃ śrutvā vyasanaṃ cānvavekṣya tat | bhṛśam ārtatarā bhūyaḥ sarva evānugāminaḥ

Hearing the lament of those two and considering that calamity, all the followers were again more deeply stricken than before.

  20. Verse 20

tato viṣaṇṇau śrāntau ca śatrughna bharatāv ubhau | dharaṇyāṃ saṃvyaceṣṭetāṃ bhagnaśṛṅgāv ivarṣabhau

Then, dejected and worn out, both Shatrughna and Bharata writhed upon the ground like two bulls with broken horns.

  21. Verse 21

tataḥ prakṛtimān vaidyaḥ pitur eṣāṃ purohitaḥ | vasiṣṭho bharataṃ vākyam utthāpya tam uvāca ha

Then their father's chaplain, the wise Vasishtha, raising Bharata up, spoke this word to him:

  22. Verse 22

trīṇi dvandvāni bhūteṣu pravṛttāny aviśeṣataḥ | teṣu cāparihāryeṣu naivaṃ bhavitum arhati

"Three pairs of opposites are set going among living beings without distinction; and since these cannot be escaped, it is not fitting to grieve thus."

The "three pairs" are the conventional dvandvas: pleasure and pain, gain and loss, and the like (traditionally also birth-and-death).

  23. Verse 23

sumantraś cāpi śatrughnam utthāpyābhiprasādya ca | śrāvayām āsa tattvajñaḥ sarvabhūtabhavābhavau

Sumantra too, raising Shatrughna and consoling him, who knew the truth, made him hear of the coming-to-be and passing-away of all beings.

  24. Verse 24

utthitau tau naravyāghrau prakāśete yaśasvinau | varṣātapapariklinnau pṛthag indradhvajāv iva

Those two tigers among men, the illustrious ones, risen up, shone forth like two banners of Indra drenched by rain and sun.

  25. Verse 25

aśrūṇi parimṛdnantau raktākṣau dīnabhāṣiṇau | amātyās tvarayanti sma tanayau cāparāḥ kriyāḥ

Wiping away their tears, their eyes red, speaking piteously, the ministers urged on the two sons to the remaining rites.
