atha rātryāṃ vyatītāyāṃ prātar evāpare 'hani | bandinaḥ paryupātiṣṭhaṃs tat pārthivaniveśanam

Now, when the night had passed, at daybreak on the following day, the court bards took their places around that royal dwelling.

tataḥ śucisamācārāḥ paryupasthāna kovidaḥ | strīvarṣavarabhūyiṣṭhā upatasthur yathāpuram

Then those of pure conduct, skilled in attendance, in the main women of advanced years, drew near as they did each day.

  3. Verse 3

haricandanasaṃpṛktam udakaṃ kāñcanair ghaṭaiḥ | āninyuḥ snānaśikṣājñā yathākālaṃ yathāvidhi

Water mingled with yellow sandal they brought in jars of gold, those versed in the rites of the bath, at the due time and in the due manner.

  4. Verse 4

maṅgalālambhanīyāni prāśanīyān upaskarān | upaninyus tathāpy anyāḥ kumārī bahulāḥ striyaḥ

Auspicious things fit to be touched, things to be eaten, and the appointed furnishings, still other women, many of them maidens, brought in.

  5. Verse 5

atha yāḥ kosalendrasya śayanaṃ pratyanantarāḥ | tāḥ striyas tu samāgamya bhartāraṃ pratyabodhayan

Then those women who stood nearest the couch of the lord of Kosala, coming together, sought to wake their master.

  6. Verse 6

tā vepathuparītāś ca rājñaḥ prāṇeṣu śaṅkitāḥ | pratisrotas tṛṇāgrāṇāṃ sadṛśaṃ saṃcakampire

Seized with trembling and anxious for the king's life, they shook like the tips of grasses against the current of a stream.

  7. Verse 7

atha saṃvepamanānāṃ strīṇāṃ dṛṣṭvā ca pārthivam | yat tad āśaṅkitaṃ pāpaṃ tasya jajñe viniścayaḥ

Then, seeing the king amid those trembling women, the certainty of the evil they had dreaded came home to them.

  8. Verse 8

tataḥ pracukruśur dīnāḥ sasvaraṃ tā varāṅganāḥ | kareṇava ivāraṇye sthānapracyutayūthapāḥ

At that those lovely women cried aloud in their misery, like she-elephants in the forest whose leader has been struck from his place.

  9. Verse 9

tāsām ākranda śabdena sahasodgatacetane | kausalyā ca sumitrāca tyaktanidre babhūvatuḥ

At the sound of their wailing, Kausalya and Sumitra, their senses suddenly roused, started from sleep.

  10. Verse 10

Kausalya and Sumitra, when they saw the king and touched him, crying "Alas, my lord!" fell to the ground.

sā kosalendraduhitā veṣṭamānā mahītale | na babhrāja rajodhvastā tāreva gaganacyutā

That daughter of the king of Kosala, writhing upon the earth, soiled with dust, shone no more, like a star fallen from the sky.

  12. Verse 12

That mansion of the god among men, who had met his appointed end, became all at once filled with terror and confusion, thronged with grief-stricken folk, loud on every side with tumultuous wailing, its kinsfolk anguished with pain,

  13. Verse 13

sadyo nipatitānandaṃ dīnaviklavadarśanam | babhūva naradevasya sadma diṣṭāntam īyuṣaḥ

its joy fallen in an instant, wretched and distraught in aspect.

  14. Verse 14

atītam ājñāya tu pārthivarṣabhaṃ; yaśasvinaṃ saṃparivārya patnayaḥ | bhṛśaṃ rudantyaḥ karuṇaṃ suduḥkhitāḥ; pragṛhya bāhū vyalapann anāthavat

Knowing that the bull among kings, the illustrious one, had passed away, his wives gathered about him and, weeping bitterly in grievous sorrow, clutching their arms, lamented like women left without a protector.
