  1. Verse 1

saṃjaya uvāca droṇaṃ sa jitvā puruṣapravīras; tathaiva hārdikyamukhāṃs tvadīyān prahasya sūtaṃ vacanaṃ babhāṣe; śinipravīraḥ kurupuṃgavāgrya

Sañjaya said: Having vanquished Droṇa, that foremost of men, and likewise your warriors led by the son of Hṛdika (Kṛtavarman), the foremost hero of the Sinis, that leader among the Kuru host, laughing, spoke this word to his charioteer:

  2. Verse 2

nimittamātraṃ vayam atra sūta; dagdhārayaḥ keśavaphalgunābhyām hatān nihanmeha nararṣabheṇa; vayaṃ sureśātmasamudbhavena

'We here, O charioteer, are but the instrumental cause; these foes have [already] been consumed by Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) and Phalguna (Arjuna). I do but slay here the [already] slain — I, [aided] by that bull among men (Arjuna) born of the very essence of the lord of the gods (Indra).'

  3. Verse 3

tam evam uktvā śinipuṃgavas tadā; mahāmṛdhe so 'gryadhanurdharo 'rihā kiran samantāt sahasā śarān balī; samāpatac chyena ivāmiṣaṃ yathā

Having said this, the bull of the Sinis then, in that great battle — that foremost wielder of the bow, that slayer of foes, the strong one — scattering arrows suddenly on every side, swooped down like a hawk upon its prey.

  4. Verse 4

taṃ yāntam aśvaiḥ śaśiśaṅkhavarṇair; vigāhya sainyaṃ puruṣapravīram nāśaknuvan vārayituṃ samantād; ādityaraśmipratimaṃ narāgryam

As that foremost of men went on with his horses of moon-and-conch hue, plunging into the army, they could not check him on any side — that best of men, [radiant] like the rays of the sun.

  5. Verse 5

asahyavikrāntam adīnasattvaṃ; sarve gaṇā bhārata durviṣahyam sahasranetrapratimaprabhāvaṃ; divīva sūryaṃ jaladavyapāye

His valour was unbearable, his spirit undaunted, hard for all the hosts to withstand, O Bhārata — of might like the thousand-eyed one (Indra), like the sun in the sky at the passing of the clouds.

  6. Verse 6

amarṣapūrṇas tv aticitrayodhī; śarāsanī kāñcanavarmadhārī sudarśanaḥ sātyakim āpatantaṃ; nyavārayad rājavaraḥ prasahya

But one full of wrath, a most wondrous fighter, a bowman, wearer of golden armour — Sudarśana, that best of kings — forcibly checked the onrushing Sātyaki.

  7. Verse 7

tayor abhūd bharata saṃprahāraḥ; sudāruṇas taṃ samabhipraśaṃsan yodhās tvadīyāś ca hi somakāś ca; vṛtrendrayor yuddham ivāmaraughāḥ

Between those two, O Bhārata, there was a most terrible encounter, which your warriors and the Somakas alike applauded — like the battle of Vṛtra and Indra applauded by the hosts of the immortals.

  8. Verse 8

śaraiḥ sutīkṣṇaiḥ śataśo 'bhyavidhyat; sudarśanaḥ sātvatamukhyam ājau anāgatān eva tu tān pṛṣatkāṃś; ciccheda bāṇaiḥ śinipuṃgavo 'pi

With very sharp arrows Sudarśana pierced by the hundreds the chief of the Sātvatas in battle; but the bull of the Sinis too cut those shafts with his arrows even before they arrived.

  9. Verse 9

tathaiva śakrapratimo 'pi sātyakiḥ; sudarśane yān kṣipati sma sāyakān dvidhā tridhā tān akarot sudarśanaḥ; śarottamaiḥ syandanavaryam āsthitaḥ

Likewise the arrows that Sātyaki, the peer of Śakra (Indra), cast at Sudarśana — those Sudarśana, mounted on his excellent chariot, cut into two and three pieces with his choice shafts.

  10. Verse 10

saṃprekṣya bāṇān nihatāṃs tadānīṃ; sudarśanaḥ sātyakibāṇavegaiḥ krodhād didhakṣann iva tigmatejāḥ; śarān amuñcat tapanīyacitrān

Seeing his arrows then struck down by the force of Sātyaki's arrows, Sudarśana, of fierce energy, as if wishing to burn [him] out of wrath, loosed arrows variegated with gold.

  11. Verse 11

punaḥ sa bāṇais tribhir agnikalpair; ākarṇapūrṇair niśitaiḥ supuṅkhaiḥ vivyādha dehāvaraṇaṃ vibhidya; te sātyaker āviviśuḥ śarīram

Again, with three fire-like arrows, drawn to the ear, sharp and well-nocked, he pierced him, cleaving his body-armour; those entered Sātyaki's body.

  12. Verse 12

tathaiva tasyāvanipālaputraḥ; saṃdhāya bāṇair aparair jvaladbhiḥ ājaghnivāṃs tān rajataprakāśāṃś; caturbhir aśvāṃś caturaḥ prasahya

Likewise that son of a king (Sudarśana), fitting other blazing arrows, forcibly struck those four silver-gleaming horses [of Sātyaki], four arrows to the four.

  13. Verse 13

tathā tu tenābhihatas tarasvī; naptā śiner indrasamānavīryaḥ sudarśanasyeṣugaṇaiḥ sutīkṣṇair; hayān nihatyāśu nanāda nādam

But the swift grandson of Sini (Sātyaki), of prowess equal to Indra, thus struck by him, having quickly slain [Sudarśana's] horses with very sharp flights of arrows, roared aloud.

  14. Verse 14

athāsya sūtasya śiro nikṛtya; bhallena vajrāśanisaṃnibhena sudarśanasyāpi śinipravīraḥ; kṣureṇa ciccheda śiraḥ prasahya

Then, cutting off the head of his (Sudarśana's) charioteer with a broad-headed arrow like the thunderbolt, the foremost hero of the Sinis forcibly cut off the head of Sudarśana too with a razor-arrow.

  15. Verse 15

sakuṇḍalaṃ pūrṇaśaśiprakāśaṃ; bhrājiṣṇu vaktraṃ nicakarta dehāt yathā purā vajradharaḥ prasahya; balasya saṃkhye 'tibalasya rājan

He severed from the body that shining face, set with earrings, bright as the full moon — as of old the wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra) forcibly [struck off the head] of the exceedingly strong Bala in battle, O king.

  16. Verse 16

nihatya taṃ pārthivaputrapautraṃ; raṇe yadūnām ṛṣabhas tarasvī mudā sametaḥ parayā mahātmā; rarāja rājan surarājakalpaḥ

Having slain that prince, the son and grandson of kings, in battle, the swift bull of the Yadus, the great-souled one, filled with supreme joy, shone, O king, like the king of the gods.

  17. Verse 17

tato yayāv arjunam eva yena; nivārya sainyaṃ tava mārgaṇaughaiḥ sadaśvayuktena rathena niryāl; lokān visismāpayiṣur nṛvīraḥ

Then he went on toward Arjuna, by [the path] whereby that hero among men, having checked your army with floods of arrows, had set out with a chariot yoked to good steeds, wishing to astonish [all] the worlds.

  18. Verse 18

tat tasya vismāpayanīyam agryam; apūjayan yodhavarāḥ sametāḥ yad vartamānān iṣugocare 'rīn; dadāha bāṇair hutabhug yathaiva

That foremost and astonishing feat of his the assembled best of warriors honoured — that he burnt with his arrows the foes who came within range of his shafts, even as the fire-god burns fuel.
