  1. Verse 1

saṃjaya uvāca kālyamāneṣu sainyeṣu śaineyena tatas tataḥ bhāradvājaḥ śaravrātair mahadbhiḥ samavākirat

Sañjaya said: As the armies were being driven off here and there by the Śaineya (Sātyaki), Bharadvāja's son covered him with great flights of arrows.

  2. Verse 2

sa saṃprahāras tumulo droṇasātvatayor abhūt paśyatāṃ sarvasainyānāṃ balivāsavayor iva

That tumultuous encounter between Droṇa and the Sātvata took place before all the armies — like [the battle] of Bali and Vāsava (Indra).

  3. Verse 3

tato droṇaḥ śineḥ pautraṃ citraiḥ sarvāyasaiḥ śaraiḥ tribhir āśīviṣākārair lalāṭe samavidhyata

Then Droṇa pierced the grandson of Sini on the forehead with three variegated, all-iron arrows resembling venomous serpents.

  4. Verse 4

tair lalāṭārpitair bāṇair yuyudhānas tv ajihmagaiḥ vyarocata mahārāja triśṛṅga iva parvataḥ

With those straight-flying arrows fixed upon his forehead, Yuyudhana, O great king, shone like a three-peaked mountain.

  5. Verse 5

tato 'sya bāṇān aparān indrāśanisamasvanān bhāradvājo 'ntaraprekṣī preṣayām āsa saṃyuge

Then Bharadvāja's son, watching for an opening, loosed other arrows at him, of sound like Indra's thunderbolt, in the fray.

  6. Verse 6

tān droṇacāpanirmuktān dāśārhaḥ patataḥ śarān dvābhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ supuṅkhābhyāṃ ciccheda paramāstravit

The Dāśārha (Sātyaki), that supreme knower of weapons, cut those falling arrows loosed from Droṇa's bow, two by two, with well-nocked shafts.

  7. Verse 7

tām asya laghutāṃ droṇaḥ samavekṣya viśāṃ pate prahasya sahasāvidhyad viṃśatyā śinipuṃgavam

Seeing that lightness of his, Droṇa, O lord of the people, laughing, suddenly pierced the bull of the Sinis with twenty arrows.

  8. Verse 8

punaḥ pañcāśateṣūṇāṃ śatena ca samārpayat laghutāṃ yuyudhānasya lāghavena viśeṣayan

Again he assailed him with fifty arrows, and with a hundred, surpassing Yuyudhana's lightness of hand with his own.

  9. Verse 9

samutpatanti valmīkād yathā kruddhā mahoragāḥ tathā droṇarathād rājann utpatanti tanucchidaḥ

As enraged great serpents spring up from an anthill, so, O king, spring up body-cleaving arrows from Droṇa's chariot.

  10. Verse 10

tathaiva yuyudhānena sṛṣṭāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ avākiran droṇarathaṃ śarā rudhirabhojanāḥ

In the same way, arrows loosed by Yuyudhana by the hundreds and thousands, blood-drinking, covered Droṇa's chariot.

  11. Verse 11

lāghavād dvijamukhyasya sātvatasya ca māriṣa viśeṣaṃ nādhyagacchāma samāvāstāṃ nararṣabhau

Because of the deftness of the foremost of Brahmins (Droṇa) and of the Sātvata, O revered one, we could find no difference between them; the two bulls among men were equal.

  12. Verse 12

sātyakis tu tato droṇaṃ navabhir nataparvabhiḥ ājaghāna bhṛśaṃ kruddho dhvajaṃ ca niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ sārathiṃ ca śatenaiva bhāradvājasya paśyataḥ

Then Sātyaki, exceedingly wroth, struck Droṇa with nine smooth-jointed arrows, and his banner with sharp arrows, and his charioteer with a full hundred, before the very eyes of Bharadvāja's son.

  13. Verse 13

lāghavaṃ yuyudhānasya dṛṣṭvā droṇo mahārathaḥ saptatyā sātyakiṃ viddhvā turagāṃś ca tribhis tribhiḥ dhvajam ekena vivyādha mādhavasya rathe sthitam

Seeing Yuyudhana's lightness, the great car-warrior Droṇa, having pierced Sātyaki with seventy arrows and his horses with three each, pierced with one arrow the banner set upon the Mādhava's chariot.

  14. Verse 14

athāpareṇa bhallena hemapuṅkhena patriṇā dhanuś ciccheda samare mādhavasya mahātmanaḥ

Then, with another broad-headed arrow, gold-nocked and feathered, he cut in battle the bow of the great-souled Mādhava.

  15. Verse 15

sātyakis tu tataḥ kruddho dhanus tyaktvā mahārathaḥ gadāṃ jagrāha mahatīṃ bhāradvājāya cākṣipat

But Sātyaki, then wroth, that great car-warrior, casting aside his bow, took up a great mace and hurled it at Bharadvāja's son.

  16. Verse 16

tām āpatantīṃ sahasā paṭṭabaddhām ayasmayīm nyavārayac charair droṇo bahubhir bahurūpibhiḥ

As it came on suddenly, iron and bound with plates, Droṇa warded it off with many arrows of many forms.

  17. Verse 17

athānyad dhanur ādāya sātyakiḥ satyavikramaḥ vivyādha bahubhir vīraṃ bhāradvājaṃ śilāśitaiḥ

Then, taking up another bow, Sātyaki of true valour pierced the hero Bharadvāja's son with many stone-whetted arrows.

  18. Verse 18

Having pierced Droṇa in battle, he uttered a lion's roar; but Droṇa, the best of all weapon-bearers, could not brook that.

  19. Verse 19

tathaḥ śaktiṃ gṛhītvā tu rukmadaṇḍām ayasmayīm tarasā preṣayām āsa mādhavasya rathaṃ prati

Then, taking up a dart with a golden staff, made of iron, he swiftly hurled it toward the Mādhava's chariot.

  20. Verse 20

anāsādya tu śaineyaṃ sā śaktiḥ kālasaṃnibhā bhittvā rathaṃ jagāmogrā dharaṇīṃ dāruṇasvanā

But that Death-like dart, not reaching the Śaineya himself, having pierced the chariot, went, terrible, into the earth with a dreadful sound.

  21. Verse 21

tato droṇaṃ śineḥ pautro rājan vivyādha patriṇā dakṣiṇaṃ bhujam āsādya pīḍayan bharatarṣabha

Then the grandson of Sini, O king, pierced Droṇa with a feathered arrow, striking his right arm and afflicting him, O bull of the Bharatas.

  22. Verse 22

droṇo 'pi samare rājan mādhavasya mahad dhanuḥ ardhacandreṇa ciccheda rathaśaktyā ca sārathim

Droṇa too in battle, O king, cut the great bow of the Mādhava with a crescent-headed arrow, and [struck] his charioteer with a chariot-dart.

  23. Verse 23

mumoha sarathis tasya rathaśaktyā samāhataḥ sa rathopastham āsādya muhūrtaṃ saṃnyaṣīdata

His charioteer, struck by the chariot-dart, swooned; reaching the platform of the chariot, he sank down for a moment.

  24. Verse 24

cakāra sātyakī rājaṃs tatra karmātimānuṣam ayodhayac ca yad droṇaṃ raśmīñ jagrāha ca svayam

There Sātyaki, O king, performed a more-than-human feat: he fought Droṇa and himself took hold of the reins.

  25. Verse 25

tataḥ śaraśatenaiva yuyudhāno mahārathaḥ avidhyad brāhmaṇaṃ saṃkhye hṛṣṭarūpo viśāṃ pate

Then Yuyudhana, that great car-warrior, of glad aspect, O lord of the people, pierced the Brahmin (Droṇa) in battle with a full hundred arrows.

  26. Verse 26

tasya droṇaḥ śarān pañca preṣayām āsa bhārata te tasya kavacaṃ bhittvā papuḥ śoṇitam āhave

To him Droṇa sent five arrows, O Bhārata; having pierced his armour, they drank his blood in the fight.

  27. Verse 27

nirviddhas tu śarair ghorair akrudhyat sātyakir bhṛśam sāyakān vyasṛjac cāpi vīro rukmarathaṃ prati

Pierced by those terrible arrows, Sātyaki grew exceedingly wroth; and the hero loosed shafts too toward the golden chariot [of Droṇa].

  28. Verse 28

tato droṇasya yantāraṃ nipātyaikeṣuṇā bhuvi aśvān vyadrāvayad bāṇair hatasūtān mahātmanaḥ

Then, having felled Droṇa's charioteer to the ground with a single arrow, he made the horses of the great-souled one bolt with his arrows, their driver slain.

  29. Verse 29

sa rathaḥ pradrutaḥ saṃkhye maṇḍalāni sahasraśaḥ cakāra rājato rājan bhrājamāna ivāṃśumān

That chariot, bolting in the battle, wheeled in circles by the thousands, O king — a silver car gleaming like the radiant sun.

  30. Verse 30

abhidravata gṛhṇīta hayān droṇasya dhāvata iti sma cukruśuḥ sarve rājaputrāḥ sarājakāḥ

'Rush on! Seize! Run to Droṇa's horses!' — so cried all the princes together with their kings.

  31. Verse 31

te sātyakim apāsyāśu rājan yudhi mahārathāḥ yato droṇas tataḥ sarve sahasā samupādravan

Casting Sātyaki aside, O king, all those great car-warriors in the fight suddenly rushed together to where Droṇa was.

  32. Verse 32

tān dṛṣṭvā pradrutān sarvān sātvatena śarārditān prabhagnaṃ punar evāsīt tava sainyaṃ samākulam

Seeing all those [warriors] routed and tormented by the Sātvata's arrows, your army was again broken and thrown into confusion.

  33. Verse 33

vyūhasyaiva punar dvāraṃ gatvā droṇo vyavasthitaḥ vātāyamānais tair aśvair hṛto vṛṣṇiśarārditaiḥ

Carried off by those wind-swift horses, [themselves] tormented by the Vṛṣṇi hero's arrows, Droṇa went once more to the gate of the array and took his stand.

  34. Verse 34

pāṇḍupāñcālasaṃbhagnaṃ vyūham ālokya vīryavān śaineye nākarod yatnaṃ vyūhasyaivābhirakṣaṇe

Beholding the array broken by the Pāṇḍavas and Pāñcālas, the valiant one (Droṇa) made no further effort against the Śaineya, [being intent] upon the protection of the array itself.

  35. Verse 35

nivārya pāṇḍupāñcālān droṇāgniḥ pradahann iva tasthau krodhāgnisaṃdīptaḥ kālasūrya ivoditaḥ

Having checked the Pāṇḍavas and Pāñcālas, Droṇa, like a blazing fire consuming all, stood kindled with the fire of wrath, like the risen sun of Doom.
