Verse 1
saṃjaya uvāca śṛṇuṣvaikamanā rājan yan māṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi drāvyamāṇe bale tasmin hārdikyena mahātmanā
Sañjaya said: Listen with undivided mind, O king, to that which you ask of me. When that force was being routed by the great-souled son of Hṛdika (Kṛtavarman),
Verse 2
lajjayāvanate cāpi prahṛṣṭaiś caiva tāvakaiḥ dvīpo ya āsīt pāṇḍūnām agādhe gādham icchatām
and [the Pāṇḍavas were] bowed down with shame while your men were filled with joy — he (Sātyaki), who had been an island to the Pāṇḍavas as they sought a foothold in the fathomless deep —
Verse 3
śrutvā tu ninadaṃ bhīmaṃ tāvakānāṃ mahāhave śaineyas tvarito rājan kṛtavarmāṇam abhyayāt
hearing the terrible din of your men in that great battle, the Śaineya (Sātyaki), hastening, O king, advanced against Kṛtavarman.
Verse 4
kṛtavarmā tu hārdikyaḥ śaineyaṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ avākirat susaṃkruddhas tato 'krudhyata sātyakiḥ
But Kṛtavarman the son of Hṛdika, greatly enraged, showered the Śaineya with sharp arrows; thereupon Sātyaki grew wroth.
Verse 5
tataḥ suniśitaṃ bhallaṃ śaineyaḥ kṛtavarmaṇe preṣayām āsa samare śarāṃś ca caturo 'parān
Then the Śaineya sent at Kṛtavarman a well-whetted broad-headed arrow in battle, and four other shafts.
Verse 6
te tasya jaghnire vāhān bhallenāsyācchinad dhanuḥ pṛṣṭharakṣaṃ tathā sūtam avidhyan niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
These slew his horses; with a broad-headed arrow he cut his bow; and he pierced his rear-guard and his charioteer with sharp shafts.
Verse 7
tatas taṃ virathaṃ kṛtvā sātyakiḥ satyavikramaḥ senām asyārdayām āsa śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ
Then, having made him carless, Sātyaki of true valour afflicted his army with smooth-jointed arrows.
Verse 8
sābhajyatātha pṛtanā śaineyaśarapīḍitā tataḥ prāyād vai tvaritaḥ sātyakiḥ satyavikramaḥ
Then that host, tormented by the Śaineya's arrows, broke; and thereupon Sātyaki of true valour swiftly went on.
Verse 9
śṛṇu rājan yad akarot tava sainyeṣu vīryavān atītya sa mahārāja droṇānīkamahārṇavam
Hear, O king, what that valiant one did amid your troops. Having crossed, O great king, the great ocean of Droṇa's army,
Verse 10
parājitya ca saṃhṛṣṭaḥ kṛtavarmāṇam āhave yantāram abravīc chūraḥ śanair yāhīty asaṃbhramam
and having vanquished Kṛtavarman in battle, the hero, glad, said to his charioteer without agitation: 'Go slowly.'
Verse 11
dṛṣṭvā tu tava tat sainyaṃ rathāśvadvipasaṃkulam padātijanasaṃpūrṇam abravīt sārathiṃ punaḥ
But seeing that army of yours, thronged with chariots, horses and elephants, and full of foot-soldiers, he spoke to his charioteer again:
Verse 12
yad etan meghasaṃkāśaṃ droṇānīkasya savyataḥ sumahat kuñjarānīkaṃ yasya rukmaratho mukham
'That great cloud-like elephant-division to the left of Droṇa's army, whose vanguard is the Rukmaratha —
Verse 13
ete hi bahavaḥ sūta durnivāryāś ca saṃyuge duryodhanasamādiṣṭā madarthe tyaktajīvitāḥ rājaputrā maheṣvāsāḥ sarve vikrāntayodhinaḥ
these many warriors, O charioteer, hard to ward off in battle, commanded by Duryodhana, having renounced their lives for my sake — princes, mighty bowmen, all valiant fighters,
Verse 14
trigartānāṃ rathodārāḥ suvarṇavikṛtadhvajāḥ mām evābhimukhā vīrā yotsyamānā vyavasthitāḥ
the noble car-warriors of the Trigartas, with banners wrought of gold, those heroes stand arrayed facing me, ready to fight.
Verse 15
atra māṃ prāpaya kṣipram aśvāṃś codaya sārathe trigartaiḥ saha yotsyāmi bhāradvājasya paśyataḥ
Bring me quickly there, urge on the horses, O charioteer; I will fight with the Trigartas before the very eyes of Bharadvāja's son (Droṇa).'
Verse 16
tataḥ prāyāc chanaiḥ sūtaḥ sātvatasya mate sthitaḥ rathenādityavarṇena bhāsvareṇa patākinā
Then the charioteer went slowly, abiding by the Sātvata's will, upon that chariot of sun-like hue, bright and banner-decked.
Verse 17
tam ūhuḥ sārather vaśyā valgamānā hayottamāḥ vāyuvegasamāḥ saṃkhye kundendurajataprabhāḥ
Those excellent horses, obedient to the driver, curvetting, bore him — equal to the wind's speed in battle, of the sheen of jasmine, the moon, and silver.
Verse 18
āpatantaṃ rathaṃ taṃ tu śaṅkhavarṇair hayottamaiḥ parivavrus tataḥ śūrā gajānīkena sarvataḥ kiranto vividhāṃs tīkṣṇān sāyakāṃl laghuvedhinaḥ
As that chariot came on with its excellent conch-hued horses, the heroes then surrounded it on all sides with their elephant-division, scattering sharp shafts of many kinds, those swift-piercing ones.
Verse 19
sātvato 'pi śitair bāṇair gajānīkam ayodhayat parvatān iva varṣeṇa tapānte jalado mahān
But the Sātvata too fought the elephant-division with sharp arrows, as a great cloud [pelts] the mountains with rain at the end of the hot season.
Verse 20
vajrāśanisamasparśair vadhyamānāḥ śarair gajāḥ prādravan raṇam utsṛjya śinivīryasamīritaiḥ
Smitten by arrows of touch like the thunderbolt and lightning, loosed by the strength of the Sini hero, the elephants fled, abandoning the battle —
Verse 21
śīrṇadantā virudhirā bhinnamastakapiṇḍakāḥ viśīrṇakarṇāsyakarā viniyantṛpatākinaḥ
their tusks broken, bloodied, the frontal globes of their heads split, their ears, mouths and trunks torn, their drivers and banners [gone],
Verse 22
saṃbhinnavarmaghaṇṭāś ca saṃnikṛttamahādhvajāḥ hatārohā diśo rājan bhejire bhraṣṭakambalāḥ
their armour and bells shattered, their great standards cut down, their riders slain, O king, their housings fallen — they scattered to all the quarters,
Verse 23
ruvanto vividhān rāvāñ jaladopamanisvanāḥ nārācair vatsadantaiś ca sātvatena vidāritāḥ
bellowing cries of many kinds, roaring like clouds, rent asunder by the Sātvata with iron shafts and calf-toothed arrows.
Verse 24
tasmin drute gajānīke jalasaṃdho mahārathaḥ yattaḥ saṃprāpayan nāgaṃ rajatāśvarathaṃ prati
When that elephant-division was routed, the great car-warrior Jalasandha, intent, brought his elephant against the chariot with silver horses.
Verse 25
rukmavarṇakaraḥ śūras tapanīyāṅgadaḥ śuciḥ kuṇḍalī mukuṭī śaṅkhī raktacandanarūṣitaḥ
A hero with gold-hued bracelets, with armlets of pure gold, pure, wearing earrings, a crown, and [carrying] a conch, smeared with red sandal,
Verse 26
śirasā dhārayan dīptāṃ tapanīyamayīṃ srajam urasā dhārayan niṣkaṃ kaṇṭhasūtraṃ ca bhāsvaram
bearing upon his head a blazing wreath of pure gold, and wearing upon his breast a golden ornament (niṣka) and a bright neck-chain,
Verse 27
cāpaṃ ca rukmavikṛtaṃ vidhunvan gajamūrdhani aśobhata mahārāja savidyud iva toyadaḥ
and brandishing a gold-wrought bow upon the elephant's head, he shone, O great king, like a cloud lit with lightning.
Verse 28
tam āpatantaṃ sahasā māgadhasya gajottamam sātyakir vārayām āsa velevodvṛttam arṇavam
As the excellent elephant of the Magadha prince suddenly came on, Sātyaki checked it, as the shore [checks] the surging sea.
Verse 29
nāgaṃ nivāritaṃ dṛṣṭvā śaineyasya śarottamaiḥ akrudhyata raṇe rājañ jalasaṃdho mahābalaḥ
Seeing his elephant checked by the choice shafts of the Śaineya, Jalasandha of great strength grew wroth in battle, O king.
Verse 30
tataḥ kruddho maheṣvāso mārgaṇair bhārasādhanaiḥ avidhyata śineḥ pautraṃ jalasaṃdho mahorasi
Then the wrathful mighty bowman Jalasandha pierced the grandson of Sini in the broad breast with heavy, penetrating shafts.
Verse 31
tato 'pareṇa bhallena pītena niśitena ca asyato vṛṣṇivīrasya nicakarta śarāsanam
Then, with another sharp, yellow arrow, he cut the bow of that Vṛṣṇi hero as he was shooting.
Verse 32
sātyakiṃ chinnadhanvānaṃ prahasann iva bhārata avidhyan māgadho vīraḥ pañcabhir niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
Jalasandha the hero, as if in sport, O Bhārata, pierced Sātyaki, whose bow was cut, with five sharp shafts.
Verse 33
sa viddho bahubhir bāṇair jalasaṃdhena vīryavān nākampata mahābāhus tad adbhutam ivābhavat
Pierced by many arrows by Jalasandha, that valiant mighty-armed one did not waver; and that was like a marvel.
Verse 34
acintayan vai sa śarān nātyarthaṃ saṃbhramād balī dhanur anyat samādāya tiṣṭha tiṣṭhety uvāca ha
The strong one, heeding the arrows but little and without great agitation, took up another bow and said, 'Stand, stand!'
Verse 35
etāvad uktvā śaineyo jalasaṃdhaṃ mahorasi vivyādha ṣaṣṭyā subhṛśaṃ śarāṇāṃ prahasann iva
Having said only this much, the Śaineya pierced Jalasandha very sorely in the broad breast with sixty arrows, as if in sport.
Verse 36
kṣurapreṇa ca pītena muṣṭideśe mahad dhanuḥ jalasaṃdhasya ciccheda vivyādha ca tribhiḥ śaraiḥ
And with a sharp, yellow razor-arrow he cut Jalasandha's great bow at the grip, and pierced him with three shafts.
Verse 37
jalasaṃdhas tu tat tyaktvā saśaraṃ vai śarāsanam tomaraṃ vyasṛjat tūrṇaṃ sātyakiṃ prati māriṣa
But Jalasandha, casting aside that bow with its arrow, swiftly hurled a lance at Sātyaki, O revered one.
Verse 38
sa nirbhidya bhujaṃ savyaṃ mādhavasya mahāraṇe abhyagād dharaṇīṃ ghoraḥ śvasann iva mahoragaḥ
Having pierced through the left arm of the Mādhava (Sātyaki) in that great battle, the terrible [lance] entered the earth, hissing like a great serpent.
Verse 39
nirbhinne tu bhuje savye sātyakiḥ satyavikramaḥ triṃśadbhir viśikhais tīkṣṇair jalasaṃdham atāḍayat
His left arm pierced through, Sātyaki of true valour smote Jalasandha with thirty sharp arrows.
Verse 40
pragṛhya tu tataḥ khaḍgaṃ jalasaṃdho mahābalaḥ ārṣabhaṃ carma ca mahac chatacandram alaṃkṛtam tata āvidhya taṃ khaḍgaṃ sātvatāyotsasarja ha
Then Jalasandha of great strength, taking up a sword and a great bull-hide shield decked with a hundred moons, whirled that sword and hurled it at the Sātvata.
Verse 41
śaineyasya dhanuś chittvā sa khaḍgo nyapatan mahīm alātacakravac caiva vyarocata mahīṃ gataḥ
Having cut the bow of the Śaineya, that sword fell to the ground; and, reaching the ground, it gleamed like a whirling firebrand.
Verse 42
athānyad dhanur ādāya sarvakāyāvadāraṇam śālaskandhapratīkāśam indrāśanisamasvanam visphārya vivyadhe kruddho jalasaṃdhaṃ śareṇa ha
Then, taking up another bow, able to rend every body, resembling the trunk of a sāla tree and of sound like Indra's thunderbolt, and drawing it, the wrathful one pierced Jalasandha with an arrow.
Verse 43
tataḥ sābharaṇau bāhū kṣurābhyāṃ mādhavottamaḥ sāṅgadau jalasaṃdhasya ciccheda prahasann iva
Then the best of the Mādhavas, with two razor-arrows, cut off, as if in sport, the two arms of Jalasandha, adorned with ornaments and armlets.
Verse 44
tau bāhū parighaprakhyau petatur gajasattamāt vasuṃdharadharād bhraṣṭau pañcaśīrṣāv ivoragau
Those two arms, like iron bludgeons, fell from that best of elephants, like two five-hooded serpents fallen from the earth-bearing mountain.
Verse 45
tataḥ sudaṃṣṭraṃ suhanu cārukuṇḍalam unnasam kṣureṇāsya tṛtīyena śiraś ciccheda sātyakiḥ
Then, with a third razor-arrow, Sātyaki cut off his head, with its fine teeth, fair jaw, lovely earrings and high nose.
Verse 46
tat pātitaśirobāhukabandhaṃ bhīmadarśanam dviradaṃ jalasaṃdhasya rudhireṇābhyaṣiñcata
The elephant of Jalasandha, fearsome to behold, bearing [its rider's] felled head and arms and his headless trunk, Sātyaki drenched with blood.
Verse 47
jalasaṃdhaṃ nihatyājau tvaramāṇas tu sātvataḥ naiṣādiṃ pātayām āsa gajaskandhād viśāṃ pate
Having slain Jalasandha in the fray, the Sātvata, hastening, cast down the Naiṣādi (the elephant-driver) from the elephant's shoulder, O lord of the people.
Verse 48
rudhireṇāvasiktāṅgo jalasaṃdhasya kuñjaraḥ vilambamānam avahat saṃśliṣṭaṃ param āsanam
Jalasandha's elephant, its body bathed in blood, bore off [the corpse] dangling and clinging to the lofty seat.
Verse 49
śarārditaḥ sātvatena mardamānaḥ svavāhinīm ghoram ārtasvaraṃ kṛtvā vidudrāva mahāgajaḥ
Tormented by the Sātvata's arrows, trampling its own army, uttering a terrible cry of distress, the great elephant fled.
Verse 50
hāhākāro mahān āsīt tava sainyasya māriṣa jalasaṃdhaṃ hataṃ dṛṣṭvā vṛṣṇīnām ṛṣabheṇa ha
A great cry of 'Alas! Alas!' arose from your army, O revered one, at the sight of Jalasandha slain by the bull of the Vṛṣṇis.
Verse 51
vimukhāś cābhyadhāvanta tava yodhāḥ samantataḥ palāyane kṛtotsāhā nirutsāhā dviṣajjaye
And your warriors, turning their faces away, ran on every side, resolved upon flight, without zeal for victory over the foe.
Verse 52
etasminn antare rājan droṇaḥ śastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ abhyayāj javanair aśvair yuyudhānaṃ mahāratham
In this interval, O king, Droṇa, the best of weapon-bearers, advanced with swift horses against the great car-warrior Yuyudhana.
Verse 53
tam udīrṇaṃ tathā dṛṣṭvā śaineyaṃ kurupuṃgavāḥ droṇenaiva saha kruddhāḥ sātyakiṃ paryavārayan
Seeing the Śaineya thus risen up, the Kuru bulls, wrathful, together with Droṇa, surrounded Sātyaki.
Verse 54
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ kurūṇāṃ sātvatasya ca droṇasya ca raṇe rājan ghoraṃ devāsuropamam
Then began the battle between the Kurus and the Sātvata, and Droṇa, in the fray, O king — terrible, like that of the gods and the Asuras.
