  1. Verse 1

saṃjaya uvāca sraṃsanta iva majjānas tāvakānāṃ bhayān nṛpa tau dṛṣṭvā samatikrāntau vāsudevadhanaṃjayau

Sanjaya said: As if their very marrow were melting from fear, O king, your (warriors), seeing those two, Vāsudeva and Dhanaṃjaya, passed beyond,

  2. Verse 2

sarve tu pratisaṃrabdhā hrīmantaḥ sattvacoditāḥ sthirībūtā mahātmānaḥ pratyagacchan dhanaṃjayam

yet all, roused again, ashamed and urged by (their innate) courage, the high-souled ones, standing firm, went back against Dhanaṃjaya.

  3. Verse 3

Those who went against the Pāṇḍava in the fight, filled with wrath and indignation — they do not return even now, like rivers (that return not) from the ocean.

  4. Verse 4

asantas tu nyavartanta vedebhya iva nāstikāḥ narakaṃ bhajamānās te pratyapadyanta kilbiṣam

But the base ones turned back, like unbelievers (turning) from the Vedas; sharing in hell, they attained to sin.

  5. Verse 5

tāv atītya rathānīkaṃ vimuktau puruṣarṣabhau dadṛśāte yathā rāhor āsyān muktau prabhākarau

Passing beyond the host of chariots, the two bulls among men, set free, appeared like two suns freed from the mouth of Rāhu.

  6. Verse 6

matsyāv iva mahājālaṃ vidārya vigatajvarau tathā kṛṣṇāv adṛśyetāṃ senājālaṃ vidārya tat

Like two fishes that have rent a great net and become free of distress, so did the two Kṛṣṇas appear, having rent that net of the host.

  7. Verse 7

vimuktau śastrasaṃbādhād droṇānīkāt sudurbhidāt adṛśyetāṃ mahātmānau kālasūryāv ivoditau

Freed from the press of weapons, from Droṇa's array hard to break, the two high-souled ones appeared like two suns of Time (Kāla) risen.

  8. Verse 8

astrasaṃbādhanirmuktau vimuktau śastrasaṃkaṭāt adṛśyetāṃ mahātmānau śatrusaṃbādhakāriṇau

Freed from the crush of weapons, delivered from the peril of arms, the two high-souled ones appeared as (those who) inflict distress on foes.

  9. Verse 9

vimuktau jvalanasparśān makarāsyāj jhaṣāv iva vyakṣobhayetāṃ senāṃ tau samudraṃ makarāv iva

Freed as from the touch of fire, like two fishes from the mouth of a crocodile (makara), they agitated the host as two makaras (agitate) the ocean.

  10. Verse 10

tāvakās tava putrāś ca droṇānīkasthayos tayoḥ naitau tariṣyato droṇam iti cakrus tadā matim

Your (warriors) and your sons, when those two were in Droṇa's array, then formed this thought: 'These two will not cross beyond Droṇa.'

  11. Verse 11

tau tu dṛṣṭvā vyatikrāntau droṇānīkaṃ mahādyutī nāśaśaṃsur mahārāja sindhurājasya jīvitam

But seeing the two of great splendour passed beyond Droṇa's array, O great king, they despaired of the life of the king of the Sindhus.

  12. Verse 12

āśā balavatī rājan putrāṇām abhavat tava droṇahārdikyayoḥ kṛṣṇau na mokṣyete iti prabho

Strong had been the hope of your sons, O king: 'The two Kṛṣṇas will not be let free by Droṇa and the son of Hṛdika (Kṛtavarman),' O lord.

  13. Verse 13

tām āśāṃ viphalāṃ kṛtvā nistīrṇau tau paraṃtapau droṇānīkaṃ mahārāja bhojānīkaṃ ca dustaram

Having made that hope vain, the two scorchers of foes crossed beyond Droṇa's array, O great king, and the hard-to-cross array of the Bhojas.

  14. Verse 14

atha dṛṣṭvā vyatikrāntau jvalitāv iva pāvakau nirāśāḥ sindhurājasya jīvitaṃ nāśaśaṃsire

Then, seeing the two passed beyond, blazing like two fires, they despaired and spoke not of the life of the king of the Sindhus.

  15. Verse 15

mithaś ca samabhāṣetām abhītau bhayavardhanau jayadrathavadhe vācas tās tāḥ kṛṣṇadhanaṃjayau

Fearless, terror-inspiring, the two Kṛṣṇas spoke together those various words about the slaying of Jayadratha:

  16. Verse 16

asau madhye kṛtaḥ ṣaḍbhir dhārtarāṣṭrair mahārathaiḥ cakṣurviṣayasaṃprāpto na nau mokṣyati saindhavaḥ

'He (Jayadratha) has been placed in the midst by the six mighty Dhārtarāṣṭra car-warriors; (yet), come within our sight, the Saindhava shall not escape us.

  17. Verse 17

yady asya samare goptā śakro devagaṇaiḥ saha tathāpy enaṃ haniṣyāva iti kṛṣṇāv abhāṣatām

Even if Śakra with the hosts of gods were his protector in battle, still we shall slay him,' — thus said the two Kṛṣṇas.

  18. Verse 18

iti kṛṣṇau mahābāhū mithaḥ kathayatāṃ tadā sindhurājam avekṣantau tat putrās tava śuśruvuḥ

While the two mighty-armed Kṛṣṇas thus spoke together, looking toward the king of the Sindhus, your sons heard it.

  19. Verse 19

atītya marudhanveva prayāntau tṛṣitau gajau pītvā vāri samāśvastau tathaivāstām ariṃdamau

Having passed beyond, like two elephants (that have crossed) a desert athirst, and, having drunk water, refreshed — even so were those two subduers of foes.

  20. Verse 20

vyāghrasiṃhagajākīrṇān atikramyeva parvatān adṛśyetāṃ mahābāhū yathā mṛtyujarātigau

Having passed over (mountains) infested with tigers, lions, and elephants, the two mighty-armed ones appeared like (those who) have overcome death and old age.

  21. Verse 21

tathā hi mukhavarṇo 'yam anayor iti menire tāvakā dṛśya muktau tau vikrośanti sma sarvataḥ

'Such indeed is the colour of the faces of these two,' so thought your (warriors); seeing the two set free, they cried out on every side.

  22. Verse 22

droṇād āśīviṣākārāj jvalitād iva pāvakāt anyebhyaḥ pārthivebhyaś ca bhāsvantāv iva bhāskarau

(Set free) from Droṇa, of serpent-like (venomous) form, blazing like fire, and from the other kings, the two shone like two suns.

  23. Verse 23

tau muktau sāgaraprakhyād droṇānīkād ariṃdamau adṛśyetāṃ mudā yuktau samuttīryārṇavaṃ yathā

Freed from Droṇa's ocean-like array, the two subduers of foes appeared, filled with joy, as (men) who have crossed the sea.

  24. Verse 24

śastraughān mahato muktau droṇahārdikyarakṣitān rocamānāv adṛśyetām indrāgnyoḥ sadṛśau raṇe

Freed from the great flood of weapons guarded by Droṇa and the son of Hṛdika, the two appeared radiant, like Indra and Agni in battle.

  25. Verse 25

udbhinnarudhirau kṛṣṇau bhāradvājasya sāyakaiḥ śitaiś citau vyarocetāṃ karṇikārair ivācalau

With blood springing forth, the two Kṛṣṇas, covered with the whetted arrows of the son of Bhāradvāja, shone like two Karṇikāra-(flowered) mountains.

  26. Verse 26

    droṇagrāhahradān muktau śaktyāśīviṣasaṃkaṭāt ayaḥśarogramakarāt kṣatriyapravarāmbhasaḥ

Freed from the lake whose crocodile was Droṇa, beset with the serpents of darts, with iron-arrow fierce crocodiles, whose water was the foremost Kṣatriyas,

  27. Verse 27

jyāghoṣatalanirhrādād gadānistriṃśavidyutaḥ droṇāstrameghān nirmuktau sūryendū timirād iva

from the thunder of the bowstring and palm-slaps, with maces and swords for its lightning — freed from Droṇa's cloud of weapons, (they shone) like the sun and moon (freed) from darkness.

  28. Verse 28

bāhubhyām iva saṃtīrṇau sindhuṣaṣṭhāḥ samudragāḥ tapānte saritaḥ pūrṇā mahāgrāhasamākulāḥ

The two appeared like (men) who had crossed over merely by their arms the ocean-going rivers — with the Sindhu as the sixth — full at the close of the hot season and infested with great crocodiles.

  29. Verse 29

iti kṛṣṇau maheṣvāsau yaśasā lokaviśrutau sarvabhūtāny amanyanta droṇāstrabalavismayāt

Thus (thinking of) the two Kṛṣṇas, great bowmen, renowned in the world for glory, all beings marvelled at (their escape from) the might of Droṇa's weapons.

  30. Verse 30

jayadrathaṃ samīpastham avekṣantau jighāṃsayā ruruṃ nipāne lipsantau vyāghravat tāv atiṣṭhatām

Looking toward Jayadratha, who was near, with intent to slay, the two stood like two tigers eyeing a ruru-deer at a watering-place.

  31. Verse 31

yathā hi mukhavarṇo 'yam anayor iti menire tava yodhā mahārāja hatam eva jayadratham

'Such indeed is the colour of the faces of these two,' so thought your warriors, O great king, (deeming) Jayadratha already slain.

  32. Verse 32

lohitākṣau mahābāhū saṃyattau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau sindhurājam abhiprekṣya hṛṣṭau vyanadatāṃ muhuḥ

The two mighty-armed ones, Kṛṣṇa and the Pāṇḍava, with reddened eyes, girt (for battle), looking toward the king of the Sindhus, joyfully roared again and again.

  33. Verse 33

śaurer abhīśuhastasya pārthasya ca dhanuṣmataḥ tayor āsīt pratibhrājaḥ sūryapāvakayor iva

Of Śauri (Kṛṣṇa) holding the reins and of Pārtha bearing the bow, there was a mutual radiance, as of the sun and fire.

  34. Verse 34

harṣa eva tayor āsīd droṇānīkapramuktayoḥ samīpe saindhavaṃ dṛṣṭvā śyenayor āmiṣaṃ yathā

There was joy in the two, freed from Droṇa's array, at the sight of the Saindhava near, as of two hawks (at the sight) of flesh.

  35. Verse 35

tau tu saindhavam ālokya vartamānam ivāntike sahasā petatuḥ kruddhau kṣipraṃ śyenāv ivāmiṣe

Beholding the Saindhava as it were close at hand, the two, wrathful, swooped suddenly, swift as two hawks upon flesh.

  36. Verse 36

tau tu dṛṣṭvā vyatikrāntau hṛṣīkeśadhanaṃjayau sindhurājasya rakṣārthaṃ parākrāntaḥ sutas tava

Seeing the two, Hṛṣīkeśa and Dhanaṃjaya, passed beyond, your son (Duryodhana), for the protection of the king of the Sindhus, showed his prowess.

  37. Verse 37

droṇenābaddhakavaco rājā duryodhanas tadā yayāv ekarathenājau hayasaṃskāravit prabho

With his armour bound on by Droṇa, King Duryodhana then went in a single car to the battle, skilled as he was in the management of steeds, O lord.

  38. Verse 38

kṛṣṇapārthau maheṣvāsau vyatikramyātha te sutaḥ agrataḥ puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ pratīyāya narādhipa

Passing beyond the two great bowmen, Kṛṣṇa and Pārtha, your son advanced ahead to face the lotus-eyed one (Kṛṣṇa), O ruler of men.

  39. Verse 39

tataḥ sarveṣu sainyeṣu vāditrāṇi prahṛṣṭavat prāvādyan samatikrānte tava putre dhanaṃjayam

Then throughout all the armies the instruments joyfully sounded, when your son had passed beyond Dhanaṃjaya.

  40. Verse 40

siṃhanādaravāś cāsañ śaṅkhadundubhimiśritāḥ dṛṣṭvā duryodhanaṃ tatra kṛṣṇayoḥ pramukhe sthitam

There arose lion-roars mingled with the sounds of conches and drums, at the sight of Duryodhana standing there before the two Kṛṣṇas.

  41. Verse 41
