Verse 1
saṃjaya uvāca salile janite tasmin kaunteyena mahātmanā nivārite dviṣatsainye kṛte ca śaraveśmani
Sanjaya said: When that water had been produced by the high-souled son of Kuntī, and the hostile host held back, and the arrow-house made,
Verse 2
vāsudevo rathāt tūrṇam avatīrya mahādyutiḥ mocayām āsa turagān vitunnān kaṅkapatribhiḥ
Vāsudeva of great splendour, swiftly descending from the car, freed the steeds that were pierced by kaṅka-feathered arrows.
Verse 3
adṛṣṭapūrvaṃ tad dṛṣṭvā siṃhanādo mahān abhūt siddhacāraṇasaṃghānāṃ sainikānāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ
Beholding that never-before-seen (deed), a great lion-roar arose from the hosts of Siddhas and Cāraṇas and from the soldiers all around.
Verse 4
padātinaṃ tu kaunteyaṃ yudhyamānaṃ nararṣabhāḥ nāśaknuvan vārayituṃ tad adbhutam ivābhavat
The bulls among men could not check the son of Kuntī, though fighting on foot; and this seemed a wonder.
Verse 5
āpatatsu rathaugheṣu prabhūtagajavājiṣu nāsaṃbhramat tadā pārthas tad asya puruṣān ati
Though floods of chariots with numerous elephants and steeds fell upon (him), Pārtha was not confounded; and this was beyond (ordinary) men.
Verse 6
The kings loosed floods of arrows at the Pāṇḍava; yet the righteous-souled son of Vāsava (Arjuna), slayer of hostile heroes, was not shaken.
Verse 7
sa tāni śarajālāni gadāḥ prāsāṃś ca vīryavān āgatān agrasat pārthaḥ saritaḥ sāgaro yathā
The valiant Pārtha devoured those nets of arrows, maces, and darts as they came, as the ocean (devours) the rivers.
Verse 8
astravegena mahatā pārtho bāhubalena ca sarveṣāṃ pārthivendrāṇām agrasat tāñ śarottamān
By the great force of his weapons and the strength of his arms, Pārtha devoured those excellent arrows of all those foremost kings.
Verse 9
tat tu pārthasya vikrāntaṃ vāsudevasya cobhayoḥ apūjayan mahārāja kauravāḥ paramādbhutam
That prowess of both Pārtha and Vāsudeva the Kauravas honoured, O great king, as most wonderful.
Verse 10
kim adbhutataraṃ loke bhavitāpy atha vāpy abhūt yad aśvān pārthagovindau mocayām āsatū raṇe
'What more wonderful thing has there been, or shall there be, in the world, than that Pārtha and Govinda unyoked their steeds in the battle?
Verse 11
bhayaṃ vipulam asmāsu tāv adhattāṃ narottamau tejo vidadhatuś cograṃ visrabdhau raṇamūrdhani
Those two best of men infused great fear in us, and displayed their fierce energy, confident at the very front of battle.'
Verse 12
athotsmayan hṛṣīkeśaḥ strīmadhya iva bhārata arjunena kṛte saṃkhye śaragarbhagṛhe tadā
Then Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa), smiling, as (a man at ease) amid women, O Bhārata, when the arrow-chambered enclosure had been made by Arjuna in the battle,
Verse 13
upāvartayad avyagras tān aśvān puṣkarekṣaṇaḥ miṣatāṃ sarvasainyānāṃ tvadīyānāṃ viśāṃ pate
the lotus-eyed one, unperturbed, led back (refreshed) those steeds, in the sight of all your armies, O lord of the people.
Verse 14
teṣāṃ śramaṃ ca glāniṃ ca vepathuṃ vamathuṃ vraṇān sarvaṃ vyapānudat kṛṣṇaḥ kuśalo hy aśvakarmaṇi
Their fatigue and weariness, their trembling, their frothing, and their wounds — all that Kṛṣṇa removed, skilled as he was in the management of steeds.
Verse 15
śalyān uddhṛtya pāṇibhyāṃ parimṛjya ca tān hayān upāvṛtya yathānyāyaṃ pāyayām āsa vāri saḥ
Drawing out the arrows with his hands and stroking those steeds, and leading them about duly, he gave them water to drink.
Verse 16
sa tāṃl labdhodakān snātāñ jagdhānnān vigataklamān yojayām āsa saṃhṛṣṭaḥ punar eva rathottame
Having watered, bathed, fed, and freed of fatigue those (steeds), he joyfully yoked them again to that excellent car.
Verse 17
sa taṃ rathavaraṃ śauriḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ samāsthāya mahātejāḥ sārjunaḥ prayayau drutam
Then the mighty Śauri (Kṛṣṇa), foremost of all weapon-bearers, of great splendour, mounting that best of cars, together with Arjuna, swiftly set forth.
Verse 18
rathaṃ rathavarasyājau yuktaṃ labdhodakair hayaiḥ dṛṣṭvā kurubalaśreṣṭhāḥ punar vimanaso 'bhavan
Beholding the excellent car of that foremost warrior yoked in battle with the watered steeds, the best of the Kuru host again became dispirited.
Verse 19
viniḥśvasantas te rājan bhagnadaṃṣṭrā ivoragāḥ dhig aho dhig gataḥ pārthaḥ kṛṣṇaś cety abruvan pṛthak
Sighing, O king, like serpents with broken fangs, they said, each apart, 'Shame, ah shame! Pārtha and Kṛṣṇa have gone (on)!
Verse 20
sarvakṣatrasya miṣato rathenaikena daṃśitau bālakrīḍanakeneva kadarthīkṛtya no balam
In the sight of all the Kṣatriyas, the two armour-clad ones, with a single car, have made light of our strength, as (with) a child's plaything!
Verse 21
krośatāṃ yatamānānām asaṃsaktau paraṃtapau darśayitvātmano vīryaṃ prayātau sarvarājasu
While (we) shouted and strove, those two scorchers of foes, unengaged (unhindered), having displayed their prowess, have gone on amid all the kings.'
Verse 22
tau prayātau punar dṛṣṭvā tadānye sainikābruvan tvaradhvaṃ kuravaḥ sarve vadhe kṛṣṇakirīṭinoḥ
Seeing the two set forth again, some of the soldiers then said: 'Hasten, all you Kurus, to the slaying of Kṛṣṇa and the Diadem-decked one (Arjuna)!
Verse 23
rathaṃ yuktvā hi dāśārho miṣatāṃ sarvadhanvinām jayadrathāya yāty eṣa kadarthīkṛtya no raṇe
For the Dāśārha (Kṛṣṇa), having yoked the car, in the sight of all the bowmen, is going toward Jayadratha, having made light of us in the battle.'
Verse 24
tatra ke cin mitho rājan samabhāṣanta bhūmipāḥ adṛṣṭapūrvaṃ saṃgrāme tad dṛṣṭvā mahad adbhutam
There some of the kings spoke together, O king, seeing that great wonder never before seen in battle:
Verse 25
sarvasainyāni rājā ca dhṛtarāṣṭro 'tyayaṃ gataḥ duryodhanāparādhena kṣatraṃ kṛtsnā ca medinī
'All the armies, and King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, have come to ruin; through the fault of Duryodhana, the Kṣatriya order and the whole earth
Verse 26
vilayaṃ samanuprāptā tac ca rājā na budhyate ity evaṃ kṣatriyās tatra bruvanty anye ca bhārata
have come to destruction; yet the king perceives it not.' Thus did the Kṣatriyas there, and others, speak, O Bhārata.
Verse 27
sindhurājasya yat kṛtyaṃ gatasya yamasādanam tat karotu vṛthādṛṣṭir dhārtarāṣṭro 'nupāyavit
'Let the Dhārtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana) of vain sight and ignorant of the means do what (can be done) for the king of the Sindhus, who is (as good as) gone to the abode of Yama.'
Verse 28
tataḥ śīghrataraṃ prāyāt pāṇḍavaḥ saindhavaṃ prati nivartamāne tigmāṃśau hṛṣṭaiḥ pītodakair hayaiḥ
Then the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) advanced yet more swiftly toward the Saindhava, as the fierce-rayed sun declined, with his steeds joyful and their thirst quenched.
Verse 29
taṃ prayāntaṃ mahābāhuṃ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varam nāśaknuvan vārayituṃ yodhāḥ kruddham ivāntakam
Him as he advanced, mighty-armed, foremost of all weapon-bearers, the warriors could not check, (any more than one could check) wrathful Antaka (Death).
Verse 30
vidrāvya tu tataḥ sainyaṃ pāṇḍavaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ yathā mṛgagaṇān siṃhaḥ saindhavārthe vyaloḍayat
Having routed the host, the Pāṇḍava, scorcher of foes, churned it up for the Saindhava's sake, as a lion (scatters) herds of deer.
Verse 31
gāhamānas tv anīkāni tūrṇam aśvān acodayat balākavarṇān dāśārhaḥ pāñcajanyaṃ vyanādayat
Plunging into the divisions, he swiftly urged on the steeds; the Dāśārha (Kṛṣṇa), (with steeds) crane-hued, blew (his conch) the Pāñcajanya.
Verse 32
kaunteyenāgrataḥ sṛṣṭā nyapatan pṛṣṭhataḥ śarāḥ tūrṇāt tūrṇataraṃ hy aśvās te 'vahan vātaraṃhasaḥ
The arrows loosed in front by the son of Kuntī fell behind (him); for swifter than swift the wind-fleet steeds bore (him along).
Verse 33
vātoddhūtapatākāntaṃ rathaṃ jaladanisvanam ghoraṃ kapidhvajaṃ dṛṣṭvā viṣaṇṇā rathino 'bhavan
Seeing that terrible car with its banner tossed by the wind, its (rumble) like a cloud, bearing the ape-standard, the (enemy) car-warriors became dispirited.
Verse 34
divākare 'tha rajasā sarvataḥ saṃvṛte bhṛśam śarārtāś ca raṇe yodhā na kṛṣṇau śekur īkṣitum
When the sun was wholly covered on every side by dust, the warriors, tormented by arrows in the battle, could not (even) look at the two Kṛṣṇas.
Verse 35
tato nṛpatayaḥ kruddhāḥ parivavrur dhanaṃjayam kṣatriyā bahavaś cānye jayadrathavadhaiṣiṇam
Then the wrathful kings, and many other Kṣatriyas, surrounded Dhanaṃjaya, who sought the slaying of Jayadratha.
Verse 36
apanīyatsu śalyeṣu dhiṣṭhitaṃ puruṣarṣabham duryodhanas tv agāt pārthaṃ tvaramāṇo mahāhave
When the arrows (of the steeds) had been extracted, and that bull among men (Arjuna) stood ready, Duryodhana, hastening, went against Pārtha in that great battle.
