Verse 1
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca yathā vadasi me sūta ekasya bahubhiḥ saha saṃgrāmaṃ tumulaṃ ghoraṃ jayaṃ caiva mahātmanaḥ
Dhritarashtra said: As you tell me, O Suta, of the tumultuous, terrible battle of the one against the many, and of the victory of that high-souled one --
Verse 2
aśraddheyam ivāścaryaṃ saubhadrasyātha vikramam kiṃ tu nātyadbhutaṃ teṣāṃ yeṣāṃ dharmo vyapāśrayaḥ
-- the prowess of the son of Subhadra seems an incredible marvel; yet it is not too wonderful in those whose refuge is righteousness.
Verse 3
duryodhane 'tha vimukhe rājaputraśate hate saubhadre pratipattiṃ kāṃ pratyapadyanta māmakāḥ
When Duryodhana had turned away and a hundred princes had been slain by the son of Subhadra, what resolve did my men adopt?
Verse 4
saṃjaya uvāca saṃśuṣkāsyāś calannetrāḥ prasvinnā lomaharṣiṇaḥ palāyanakṛtotsāhā nirutsāhā dviṣajjaye
Sanjaya said: Their mouths parched, their eyes rolling, sweating, their hair standing on end, their zeal now bent on flight, dispirited as to conquering the foe,
Verse 5
hatān bhrātṝn pitṝn putrān suhṛtsaṃbandhibāndhavān utsṛjyotsṛjya samiyus tvarayanto hayadvipān
abandoning their slain brothers, fathers, sons, friends, kinsmen, and relations one after another, they gathered in flight, urging on their horses and elephants.
Verse 6
tān prabhagnāṃs tathā dṛṣṭvā droṇo drauṇir bṛhadbalaḥ kṛpo duryodhanaḥ karṇaḥ kṛtavarmātha saubalaḥ
Seeing them thus broken, Drona, the son of Drona, Brihadbala, Kripa, Duryodhana, Karna, Kritavarman, and the son of Subala --
Verse 7
abhidrutāḥ susaṃkruddhāḥ saubhadram aparājitam te 'pi pautreṇa te rājan prāyaśo vimukhīkṛtāḥ
-- greatly enraged, rushed upon the unconquered son of Subhadra; but they too, O king, were mostly turned back by your grandson.
Verse 8
ekas tu sukhasaṃvṛddho bālyād darpāc ca nirbhayaḥ iṣvastravin mahātejā lakṣmaṇo ''rjunim abhyayāt
But one -- reared in comfort, fearless from youth and from pride, skilled in arrows and weapons, of great energy -- Lakshmana (Duryodhana's son) -- advanced against the son of Arjuna.
Verse 9
tam anvag evāsya pitā putragṛddhī nyavartata anu duryodhanaṃ cānye nyavartanta mahārathāḥ
Close behind him, his father, fond of his son, turned back to the fight; and after Duryodhana the other mighty car-warriors turned back.
Verse 10
taṃ te 'bhiṣiṣicur bāṇair meghā girim ivāmbubhiḥ sa ca tān pramamāthaiko viṣvag vāto yathāmbudān
They drenched him with arrows, as clouds drench a mountain with water; and he alone crushed them, as the wind scatters clouds in all directions.
Verse 11
pautraṃ tu tava durdharṣaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ priyadarśanam pituḥ samīpe tiṣṭhantaṃ śūram udyatakārmukam
Your grandson, the unassailable Lakshmana of pleasing aspect, that hero standing near his father, his bow upraised --
Verse 12
atyantasukhasaṃvṛddhaṃ dhaneśvarasutopamam āsasāda raṇe kārṣṇir matto mattam iva dvipam
-- reared in the utmost comfort, resembling the son of the Lord of Wealth -- him the son of Krishna's (line) approached in battle, like one furious elephant approaching another in rut.
Verse 13
lakṣmaṇena tu saṃgamya saubhadraḥ paravīrahā śaraiḥ suniśitais tīkṣṇair bāhvor urasi cārpitaḥ
Engaging with Lakshmana, the son of Subhadra, slayer of hostile heroes, was struck with very sharp, keen arrows on the arms and the breast.
Verse 14
saṃkruddho vai mahābāhur daṇḍāhata ivoragaḥ pautras tava mahārāja tava pautram abhāṣata
Greatly enraged, the mighty-armed one, like a serpent struck with a rod -- your grandson (Abhimanyu), O great king -- said to your grandson (Lakshmana):
Verse 15
sudṛṣṭaḥ kriyatāṃ loko amuṃ lokaṃ gamiṣyasi paśyatāṃ bāndhavānāṃ tvāṃ nayāmi yamasādanam
'Take a good look upon the world; you shall go to the other world. Before the eyes of your kinsmen, I send you to the abode of Yama.'
Verse 16
evam uktvā tato bhallaṃ saubhadraḥ paravīrahā udbabarha mahābāhur nirmuktoragasaṃnibham
Having said this, the mighty-armed son of Subhadra, slayer of hostile heroes, then drew forth a broad-headed shaft, resembling a serpent that has cast its slough.
Verse 17
sa tasya bhujanirmukto lakṣmaṇasya sudarśanam sunasaṃ subhru keśāntaṃ śiro 'hārṣīt sakuṇḍalam lakṣmaṇaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā hā hety uccukruśur janāḥ
Loosed from his arm, it bore off Lakshmana's comely head -- fair of nose, of brows, and of hair -- with its ear-rings. Seeing Lakshmana slain, the people cried out, 'Alas! Alas!'
Verse 18
tato duryodhanaḥ kruddhaḥ priye putre nipātite hatainam iti cukrośa kṣatriyān kṣatriyarṣabhaḥ
Then Duryodhana, enraged, his dear son struck down, that bull among the Kshatriyas cried out to the Kshatriyas: 'Slay this one!'
Verse 19
tato droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ karṇo droṇaputro bṛhadbalaḥ kṛtavarmā ca hārdikyaḥ ṣaḍ rathāḥ paryavārayan
Then Drona, Kripa, Karna, the son of Drona, Brihadbala, and Kritavarman the son of Hridika -- these six car-warriors surrounded him.
Verse 20
sa tān viddhvā śitair bāṇair vimukhīkṛtya cārjuniḥ vegenābhyapatat kruddhaḥ saindhavasya mahad balam
The son of Arjuna, having pierced them with sharp arrows and turned them back, wrathfully rushed with great speed against the mighty host of the Saindhava.
Verse 21
āvavrus tasya panthānaṃ gajānīkena daṃśitāḥ kaliṅgāś ca niṣādāś ca krāthaputraś ca vīryavān tat prasaktam ivātyarthaṃ yuddham āsīd viśāṃ pate
The Kalingas and the Nishadas, mailed, with a division of elephants, and the valiant son of Kratha, barred his path; and that battle became exceedingly relentless, O lord of peoples.
Verse 22
tatas tat kuñjarānīkaṃ vyadhamad dhṛṣṭam ārjuniḥ yathā vivān nityagatir jaladāñ śataśo 'mbare
Then the son of Arjuna, exultant, scattered that division of elephants, as the ever-moving wind scatters clouds by the hundred in the sky.
Verse 23
tataḥ krāthaḥ śaravrātair ārjuniṃ samavākirat athetare saṃnivṛttāḥ punar droṇamukhā rathāḥ paramāstrāṇi dhunvānāḥ saubhadram abhidudruvuḥ
Then the son of Kratha covered the son of Arjuna with volleys of arrows; and the other car-warriors, headed by Drona, having rallied again, brandishing their highest weapons, rushed upon the son of Subhadra.
Verse 24
tān nivāryārjunir bāṇaiḥ krāthaputram athārdayat śaraugheṇāprameyeṇa tvaramāṇo jighāṃsayā
Warding them off with his arrows, the son of Arjuna then, in his haste and with intent to slay, afflicted the son of Kratha with an immeasurable flood of arrows.
Verse 25
sadhanurbāṇakeyūrau bāhū samukuṭaṃ śiraḥ chatraṃ dhvajaṃ niyantāram aśvāṃś cāsya nyapātayat
He struck down his arms, with their bow, arrows, and armlets, and his head with its crown, and his umbrella, standard, driver, and steeds.
Verse 26
kulaśīlaśrutabalaiḥ kīrtyā cāstrabalena ca yukte tasmin hate vīrāḥ prāyaśo vimukhābhavan
When he -- endowed with noble birth, character, learning, strength, fame, and skill in weapons -- was slain, the heroes mostly turned their backs and fled.
