  1. Verse 1

saṃjaya uvāca samare 'tyugrakarmāṇaḥ karmabhir vyañjitaśramāḥ sakṛṣṇāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ pañca devair api durāsadāḥ

Sanjaya said: Of most terrible deeds in battle, their exertions made manifest by their feats, the five Pandavas, together with Krishna, are hard to assail even by the gods.

  2. Verse 2

sattvakarmānvayair buddhyā prakṛtyā yaśasā śriyā naiva bhūto na bhavitā kṛṣṇatulyaguṇaḥ pumān

In goodness, deeds, lineage, intellect, nature, fame, and fortune, there never was, nor shall there ever be, a man of qualities equal to Krishna.

  3. Verse 3

satyadharmaparo dātā viprapūjādibhir guṇaiḥ sadaiva tridivaṃ prāpto rājā kila yudhiṣṭhiraḥ

Devoted to truth and righteousness, a giver, endowed with the virtues of reverencing Brahmins and the like, King Yudhishthira has, it is said, ever attained (as though) to heaven itself.

  4. Verse 4

yugānte cāntako rājañ jāmadagnyaś ca vīryavān raṇastho bhīmasenaś ca kathyante sadṛśās trayaḥ

Death at the end of the age, the valiant son of Jamadagni (Parashurama), and Bhimasena stationed in battle -- these three, O king, are spoken of as alike.

  5. Verse 5

pratijñākarmadakṣasya raṇe gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ upamāṃ nādhigacchāmi pārthasya sadṛśīṃ kṣitau

For Partha, the wielder of the Gandiva, skilled in fulfilling his vows by deeds in battle, I can find no fitting comparison upon the earth.

  6. Verse 6

guruvātsalyam atyantaṃ naibhṛtyaṃ vinayo damaḥ nakule 'prātirūpyaṃ ca śauryaṃ ca niyatāni ṣaṭ

In Nakula six qualities are constant: exceeding tenderness toward his elders, discretion, modesty, self-restraint, unmatched (beauty), and valor.

  7. Verse 7

śrutagāmbhīryamādhuryasattvavīryaparākramaiḥ sadṛśo devayor vīraḥ sahadevaḥ kilāśvinoḥ

In learning, gravity, sweetness, goodness, valor, and prowess, the hero Sahadeva is, it is said, like the two gods, the Ashvins.

  8. Verse 8

ye ca kṛṣṇe guṇāḥ sphītāḥ pāṇḍaveṣu ca ye guṇāḥ abhimanyau kilaikasthā dṛśyante guṇasaṃcayāḥ

The abundant virtues that are in Krishna, and the virtues that are in the Pandavas -- all those aggregates of virtue are seen, it is said, gathered together in Abhimanyu alone.

  9. Verse 9

yudhiṣṭhirasya dhairyeṇa kṛṣṇasya caritena ca karmabhir bhīmasenasya sadṛśo bhīmakarmaṇaḥ

    In firmness he was like Yudhishthira; in conduct, like Krishna; in deeds, like Bhimasena of dreadful feats;

    धैर्य में युधिष्ठिर के समान, आचरण में श्रीकृष्ण के समान, और भयानक कर्म करने वाले भीमसेन के समान कर्मों वाला —

  10. Verse 10

dhanaṃjayasya rūpeṇa vikrameṇa śrutena ca vinayāt sahadevasya sadṛśo nakulasya ca

In beauty, prowess, and learning, like Dhananjaya; and in modesty, like Sahadeva and Nakula.

  11. Verse 11

dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca abhimanyum ahaṃ sūta saubhadram aparājitam śrotum icchāmi kārtsnyena katham āyodhane hataḥ

Dhritarashtra said: O Suta, I wish to hear in full concerning Abhimanyu, the unconquered son of Subhadra -- how he was slain in the battle.

  12. Verse 12

saṃjaya uvāca cakravyūho mahārāja ācāryeṇābhikalpitaḥ tatra śakropamāḥ sarve rājāno viniveśitāḥ

Sanjaya said: The Chakravyuha (wheel-array), O great king, was formed by the preceptor; therein were stationed all the kings, each like Shakra.

  13. Verse 13

saṃghāto rājaputrāṇāṃ sarveṣām abhavat tadā kṛtābhisamayāḥ sarve suvarṇavikṛtadhvajāḥ

There was then a gathering of all the princes; all had made a mutual compact, and all bore standards wrought of gold.

  14. Verse 14

raktāmbaradharāḥ sarve sarve raktavibhūṣaṇāḥ sarve raktapatākāś ca sarve vai hemamālinaḥ

All wore red garments, all wore red ornaments, all had red banners, and all wore golden garlands.

  15. Verse 15

teṣāṃ daśasahasrāṇi babhūvur dṛḍhadhanvinām pautraṃ tava puraskṛtya lakṣmaṇaṃ priyadarśanam

Of those firm bowmen there were ten thousand, having placed at their head your grandson Lakshmana, of pleasing aspect.

  16. Verse 16

anyonyasamaduḥkhās te anyonyasamasāhasāḥ anyonyaṃ spardhamānāś ca anyonyasya hite ratāḥ

They shared one another's sorrows, matched one another in daring, vied with one another, and were devoted to one another's welfare.

  17. Verse 17

karṇaduḥśāsanakṛpair vṛto rājā mahārathaiḥ devarājopamaḥ śrīmāñ śvetacchatrābhisaṃvṛtaḥ cāmaravyajanākṣepair udayann iva bhāskaraḥ

The king (Duryodhana), surrounded by the mighty car-warriors Karna, Duhshasana, and Kripa, glorious as the king of the gods, shaded by a white umbrella and fanned by the wavings of chamaras and fans, shone like the rising sun.

  18. Verse 18

pramukhe tasya sainyasya droṇo 'vasthitanāyake sindhurājas tathātiṣṭhac chrīmān merur ivācalaḥ

At the head of that army, of which Drona was the appointed leader, the king of the Sindhus (Jayadratha) took his stand, glorious and unmoving as Mount Meru.

  19. Verse 19

The king of the Gandharas (Shakuni), Kitava, Shalya, and Bhurishravas -- those mighty car-warriors -- shone at the side of the king of the Sindhus.
