Verse 1
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca teṣv evaṃ saṃnivṛtteṣu pratyudyāteṣu bhāgaśaḥ kathaṃ yuyudhire pārthā māmakāś ca tarasvinaḥ
Dhritarashtra said: When they had thus rallied and advanced against one another in their several groups, how did the Parthas and my own swift warriors fight?
Verse 2
kim arjunaś cāpy akarot saṃśaptakabalaṃ prati saṃśaptakā vā pārthasya kim akurvata saṃjaya
And what did Arjuna do against the host of the Samshaptakas? And what did the Samshaptakas do against Partha, O Sanjaya?
Verse 3
saṃjaya uvāca tathā teṣu nivṛtteṣu pratyudyāteṣu bhāgaśaḥ svayam abhyadravad bhīmaṃ nāgānīkena te sutaḥ
Sanjaya said: When they had thus rallied and advanced in their several groups, your son himself charged against Bhima with a division of elephants.
Verse 4
sa nāga iva nāgena govṛṣeṇeva govṛṣaḥ samāhūtaḥ svayaṃ rājñā nāgānīkam upādravat
He (Bhima), like an elephant challenged by an elephant, or a bull by a bull, being himself summoned by the king, charged against the elephant-division.
Verse 5
sa yuddhakuśalaḥ pārtho bāhuvīryeṇa cānvitaḥ abhinat kuñjarānīkam acireṇaiva māriṣa
That son of Pritha, skilled in battle and endowed with the might of his arms, shattered the elephant-division in but a moment, O sire.
Verse 6
te gajā girisaṃkāśāḥ kṣarantaḥ sarvato madam bhīmasenasya nārācair vimukhā vimadīkṛtāḥ
Those elephants, huge as hills, streaming with rut on every side, were turned back and stripped of their fury by the iron shafts of Bhimasena.
Verse 7
vidhamed abhrajālāni yathā vāyuḥ samantataḥ vyadhamat tāny anīkāni tathaiva pavanātmajaḥ
As the wind scatters masses of cloud on every side, so did the son of the Wind scatter those (elephant) hosts.
Verse 8
sa teṣu visṛjan bāṇān bhīmo nāgeṣv aśobhata bhuvaneṣv iva sarveṣu gabhastīn udito raviḥ
Bhima, loosing his arrows upon those elephants, shone forth as the risen sun shines, casting its rays upon all the worlds.
Verse 9
te bhīmabāṇaiḥ śataśaḥ saṃsyūtā vibabhur gajāḥ gabhastibhir ivārkasya vyomni nānābalāhakāḥ
Those elephants, pierced by the hundreds by Bhima's arrows, shone like diverse clouds in the sky pierced by the rays of the sun.
Verse 10
tathā gajānāṃ kadanaṃ kurvāṇam anilātmajam kruddho duryodhano 'bhyetya pratyavidhyac chitaiḥ śaraiḥ
As the son of the Wind was thus making havoc of the elephants, the wrathful Duryodhana, coming up, pierced him in return with sharp arrows.
Verse 11
tataḥ kṣaṇena kṣitipaṃ kṣatajapratimekṣaṇaḥ kṣayaṃ ninīṣur niśitair bhīmo vivyādha patribhiḥ
Then in an instant Bhima, his eyes red as blood, seeking to bring the king to destruction, pierced him with sharp winged arrows.
Verse 12
sa śarārpitasarvāṅgaḥ kruddho vivyādha pāṇḍavam nārācair arkaraśmyābhair bhīmasenaṃ smayann iva
He (Duryodhana), all his limbs stuck with arrows, wrathful, pierced the Pandava Bhimasena with iron shafts bright as the sun's rays, as though smiling.
Verse 13
tasya nāgaṃ maṇimayaṃ ratnacitraṃ dhvaje sthitam bhallābhyāṃ kārmukaṃ caiva kṣipraṃ ciccheda pāṇḍavaḥ
The Pandava quickly cut off, with two broad-headed shafts, the jeweled elephant, bright with gems, that stood upon Duryodhana's standard, and his bow as well.
Verse 14
duryodhanaṃ pīḍyamānaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhīmena māriṣa cukṣobhayiṣur abhyāgād aṅgo mātaṅgam āsthitaḥ
Seeing Duryodhana hard pressed by Bhima, O sire, the king of the Angas, mounted upon an elephant, came up, wishing to throw (Bhima) into confusion.
Verse 15
tam āpatantaṃ mātaṅgam ambudapratimasvanam kumbhāntare bhīmaseno nārācenārdayad bhṛśam
As that elephant, whose trumpeting was like the roar of clouds, rushed on, Bhimasena sorely smote it between the frontal globes with an iron shaft.
Verse 16
tasya kāyaṃ vinirbhidya mamajja dharaṇītale tataḥ papāta dvirado vajrāhata ivācalaḥ
Piercing through its body, (the shaft) sank into the earth; and then the elephant fell like a mountain struck by the thunderbolt.
Verse 17
tasyāvarjitanāgasya mlecchasyāvapatiṣyataḥ śiraś ciccheda bhallena kṣiprakārī vṛkodaraḥ
As the Mleccha (king of the Angas), his elephant overthrown, was about to fall, the swift-handed Vrikodara cut off his head with a broad-headed shaft.
Verse 18
tasmin nipatite vīre saṃprādravata sā camūḥ saṃbhrāntāśvadviparathā padātīn avamṛdnatī
When that hero fell, that host broke and fled, its horses, elephants, and cars thrown into panic, trampling down its own foot-soldiers.
Verse 19
teṣv anīkeṣu sarveṣu vidravatsu samantataḥ prāgjyotiṣas tato bhīmaṃ kuñjareṇa samādravat
When all those hosts were fleeing on every side, the king of Pragjyotisha (Bhagadatta) then charged against Bhima with his elephant.
Verse 20
yena nāgena maghavān ajayad daityadānavān sa nāgapravaro bhīmaṃ sahasā samupādravat
That foremost of elephants, upon which Maghavat had of old conquered the Daityas and Danavas, charged suddenly against Bhima.
Verse 21
śravaṇābhyām atho padbhyāṃ saṃhatena kareṇa ca vyāvṛttanayanaḥ kruddhaḥ pradahann iva pāṇḍavam
With its ears, its feet, and its coiled trunk, its eyes rolling, enraged, (the elephant advanced) as if to consume the Pandava.
Verse 22
tataḥ sarvasya sainyasya nādaḥ samabhavan mahān hā hā vinihato bhīmaḥ kuñjareṇeti māriṣa
Then from the whole army there arose a great cry: 'Alas, alas! Bhima is slain by the elephant!' -- so it was, O sire.
Verse 23
tena nādena vitrastā pāṇḍavānām anīkinī sahasābhyadravad rājan yatra tasthau vṛkodaraḥ
Alarmed by that cry, the host of the Pandavas rushed at once, O king, to where Vrikodara stood.
Verse 24
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā hataṃ matvā vṛkodaram bhagadattaṃ sapāñcālaḥ sarvataḥ samavārayat
Then King Yudhishthira, believing Vrikodara slain, together with the Panchalas, hemmed in Bhagadatta on every side.
Verse 25
taṃ rathai rathināṃ śreṣṭhāḥ parivārya samantataḥ avākirañ śarais tīkṣṇaiḥ śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ
Those foremost of car-warriors, surrounding him on all sides with their cars, covered him with sharp arrows by the hundreds and the thousands.
Verse 26
sa vighātaṃ pṛṣatkānām aṅkuśena samācaran gajena pāṇḍupāñcālān vyadhamat parvateśvaraḥ
That lord of the mountains (Bhagadatta), warding off the arrows with his goad, scattered the Pandavas and Panchalas with his elephant.
Verse 27
tad adbhutam apaśyāma bhagadattasya saṃyuge tathā vṛddhasya caritaṃ kuñjareṇa viśāṃ pate
We beheld that wondrous feat of Bhagadatta in the battle, O lord of peoples -- of that aged one, fighting with his elephant.
Verse 28
tato rājā daśārṇānāṃ prāgjyotiṣam upādravat tiryagyātena nāgena samadenāśugāminā
Then the king of the Dasharnas charged against the king of Pragjyotisha with his rutting, swift-going elephant, advancing obliquely.
Verse 29
tayor yuddhaṃ samabhavan nāgayor bhīmarūpayoḥ sapakṣayoḥ parvatayor yathā sadrumayoḥ purā
A battle took place between those two elephants of dreadful form, like that of old between two winged mountains covered with trees.
Verse 30
prāgjyotiṣapater nāgaḥ saṃnipatyāpavṛtya ca pārśve daśārṇādhipater bhittvā nāgam apātayat
The elephant of the lord of Pragjyotisha, closing in and then wheeling about, pierced the elephant of the lord of the Dasharnas in the flank and brought it down.
Verse 31
tomaraiḥ sūryaraśmyābhair bhagadatto 'tha saptabhiḥ jaghāna dviradasthaṃ taṃ śatruṃ pracalitāsanam
Then Bhagadatta, with seven lances bright as the sun's rays, slew that foe upon his elephant, who was already tottering from his seat.
Verse 32
upasṛtya tu rājānaṃ bhagadattaṃ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rathānīkena mahatā sarvataḥ paryavārayat
But Yudhishthira, approaching King Bhagadatta, surrounded him on every side with a great division of chariots.
Verse 33
sa kuñjarastho rathibhiḥ śuśubhe sarvato vṛtaḥ parvate vanamadhyastho jvalann iva hutāśanaḥ
He, upon his elephant, encircled on all sides by the car-warriors, shone like a blazing fire set amid a forest upon a mountain.
Verse 34
maṇḍalaṃ sarvataḥ śliṣṭaṃ rathinām ugradhanvinām kiratāṃ śaravarṣāṇi sa nāgaḥ paryavartata
That elephant wheeled about amid the close-drawn ring of fierce-bowed car-warriors on every side, who poured down showers of arrows.
Verse 35
tataḥ prāgjyotiṣo rājā parigṛhya dviparṣabham preṣayām āsa sahasā yuyudhānarathaṃ prati
Then the king of Pragjyotisha, wheeling his bull-elephant, drove it suddenly against the car of Yuyudhana (Satyaki).
Verse 36
śineḥ pautrasya tu rathaṃ parigṛhya mahādvipaḥ abhicikṣepa vegena yuyudhānas tv apākramat
The great elephant, seizing the car of the grandson of Shini, hurled it away with force; but Yuyudhana leapt clear.
Verse 37
bṛhataḥ saindhavān aśvān samutthāpya tu sārathiḥ tasthau sātyakim āsādya saṃplutas taṃ rathaṃ punaḥ
But the charioteer, having got the large Sindhu-bred steeds up again, stood firm; and reaching him, Satyaki leapt once more onto that car.
Verse 38
sa tu labdhvāntaraṃ nāgas tvarito rathamaṇḍalāt niścakrāma tataḥ sarvān paricikṣepa pārthivān
That elephant, finding an opening, swiftly broke out of the ring of chariots, and then scattered all the kings.
Verse 39
te tv āśugatinā tena trāsyamānā nararṣabhāḥ tam ekaṃ dviradaṃ saṃkhye menire śataśo nṛpāḥ
Those bulls among men, terrified by that swift-moving elephant, those kings in battle deemed that single elephant to be as though a hundred.
Verse 40
te gajasthena kālyante bhagadattena pāṇḍavāḥ airāvatasthena yathā devarājena dānavāḥ
The Pandavas were driven by Bhagadatta upon his elephant, as the Danavas were driven by the king of the gods upon Airavata.
Verse 41
teṣāṃ pradravatāṃ bhīmaḥ pāñcālānām itas tataḥ gajavājikṛtaḥ śabdaḥ sumahān samajāyata
As those Panchalas fled hither and thither, a fearful and mighty din, made by elephants and horses, arose.
Verse 42
bhagadattena samare kālyamāneṣu pāṇḍuṣu prāgjyotiṣam abhikruddhaḥ punar bhīmaḥ samabhyayāt
As the Pandavas were being driven by Bhagadatta in the battle, Bhima, greatly enraged, again advanced against the king of Pragjyotisha.
Verse 43
tasyābhidravato vāhān hastamuktena vāriṇā siktvā vyatrāsayan nāgas te pārtham aharaṃs tataḥ
As Bhima charged, the elephant, sprinkling his steeds with water loosed from its trunk, threw them into panic; and they then bolted, carrying Partha away.
Verse 44
tatas tam abhyayāt tūrṇaṃ ruciparvākṛtīsutaḥ samukṣañ śaravarṣeṇa rathastho 'ntakasaṃnibhaḥ
Then Ruchiparvan, of fair form, swiftly advanced against him, standing upon his car like Death itself, drenching (him) with a shower of arrows.
Verse 45
tato ruciraparvāṇaṃ śareṇa nataparvaṇā suparvā parvatapatir ninye vaivasvatakṣayam
Then the lord of the mountains (Bhagadatta), himself well-formed, with a straight-jointed arrow sent Ruchiraparvan to the abode of Vaivasvata.
Verse 46
tasmin nipatite vīre saubhadro draupadīsutāḥ cekitāno dhṛṣṭaketur yuyutsuś cārdayan dvipam
When that hero fell, the son of Subhadra, the sons of Draupadi, Chekitana, Dhrishtaketu, and Yuyutsu assailed the elephant.
Verse 47
ta enaṃ śaradhārābhir dhārābhir iva toyadāḥ siṣicur bhairavān nādān vinadanto jighāṃsavaḥ
They drenched it with streams of arrows, as rain-clouds with torrents of water, uttering fearful roars, eager to slay it.
Verse 48
tataḥ pārṣṇyaṅkuśāṅguṣṭhaiḥ kṛtinā codito dvipaḥ prasāritakaraḥ prāyāt stabdhakarṇekṣaṇo drutam
Then the elephant, urged on by the skilled (rider) with heel, goad, and thumb, went forward swiftly, its trunk outstretched, its ears and eyes held rigid.
Verse 49
so 'dhiṣṭhāya padā vāhān yuyutsoḥ sūtam ārujat putras tu tava saṃbhrāntaḥ saubhadrasyāpluto ratham
Treading with its foot upon the steeds of Yuyutsu, it crushed his charioteer; but your son (Yuyutsu), in alarm, leapt onto the car of the son of Subhadra.
Verse 50
sa kuñjarastho visṛjann iṣūn ariṣu pārthivaḥ babhau raśmīn ivādityo bhuvaneṣu samutsṛjan
That king (Bhagadatta), upon his elephant, loosing arrows upon his foes, shone like the sun casting its rays upon the worlds.
Verse 51
tam ārjunir dvādaśabhir yuyutsur daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ tribhis tribhir draupadeyā dhṛṣṭaketuś ca vivyadhuḥ
The son of Arjuna pierced him with twelve arrows, Yuyutsu with ten, and the sons of Draupadi and Dhrishtaketu each with three.
Verse 52
so 'riyatnārpitair bāṇair ācito dvirado babhau saṃsyūta iva sūryasya raśmibhir jalado mahān
That elephant, studded with arrows driven in by the effort of the foe, shone like a great cloud pierced through by the rays of the sun.
Verse 53
niyantuḥ śilpayatnābhyāṃ preṣito 'riśarārditaḥ paricikṣepa tān nāgaḥ sa ripūn savyadakṣiṇam
Urged on by the skill and effort of its driver, though tormented by the arrows of the foe, that elephant scattered those enemies to the left and to the right.
Verse 54
gopāla iva daṇḍena yathā paśugaṇān vane āveṣṭayata tāṃ senāṃ bhagadattas tathā muhuḥ
As a cowherd with his staff drives the herds of cattle about in the forest, so did Bhagadatta again and again wheel that army round.
Verse 55
kṣipraṃ śyenābhipannānāṃ vāyasānām iva svanaḥ babhūva pāṇḍaveyānāṃ bhṛśaṃ vidravatāṃ svanaḥ
The clamor of the Pandavas, fleeing in haste, was like the cawing of crows swiftly set upon by a hawk.
Verse 56
sa nāgarājaḥ pravarāṅkuśāhataḥ; purā sapakṣo 'drivaro yathā nṛpa bhayaṃ tathā ripuṣu samādadhad bhṛśaṃ; vaṇiggaṇānāṃ kṣubhito yathārṇavaḥ
That king of elephants, struck by the excellent goad, O king, like a winged mountain-lord of old, spread great terror among the foes, as the surging ocean strikes terror into a band of merchants.
Verse 57
tato dhvanir dviradarathāśvapārthivair; bhayād dravadbhir janito 'tibhairavaḥ kṣitiṃ viyad dyāṃ vidiśo diśas tathā; samāvṛṇot pārthiva saṃyuge tadā
Then a most fearful din, raised by the elephants, cars, horses, and kings fleeing in terror, filled the earth, the mid-air, the heavens, and all the quarters and intermediate quarters, O king, in that battle.
Verse 58
sa tena nāgapravareṇa pārthivo; bhṛśaṃ jagāhe dviṣatām anīkinīm purā suguptāṃ vibudhair ivāhave; virocano devavarūthinīm iva
That king, upon that foremost of elephants, plunged deep into the host of his foes -- well guarded though it was -- as of old Virochana plunged into the host of the gods in battle.
Verse 59
bhṛśaṃ vavau jvalanasakho viyad rajaḥ; samāvṛṇon muhur api caiva sainikān tam ekanāgaṃ gaṇaśo yathā gajāḥ; samantato drutam iva menire janāḥ
The friend of fire (the wind) blew hard; dust filled the sky and again and again covered over the soldiers; and men deemed that single elephant to be, as it were, whole troops of elephants rushing on from every side.
