Verse 1
saṃjaya uvāca mahad bhairavam āsīn naḥ saṃnivṛtteṣu pāṇḍuṣu dṛṣṭvā droṇaṃ chādyamānaṃ tair bhāskaram ivāmbudaiḥ
Sanjaya said: Great was the terror that fell upon us when the Pandavas turned back to the fight, seeing Drona veiled by them as the sun is veiled by clouds.
Verse 2
taiś coddhūtaṃ rajas tīvram avacakre camūṃ tava tato hatam amanyāma droṇaṃ dṛṣṭipathe hate
The thick dust they raised swallowed up your army; and when the range of vision was lost, we thought Drona already slain.
Verse 3
tāṃs tu śūrān maheṣvāsān krūraṃ karma cikīrṣataḥ dṛṣṭvā duryodhanas tūrṇaṃ svasainyaṃ samacūcudat
But seeing those heroic great archers bent on a cruel deed, Duryodhana swiftly urged on his own troops.
Verse 4
yathāśakti yathotsāhaṃ yathāsattvaṃ narādhipāḥ vārayadhvaṃ yathāyogaṃ pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm
'According to your power, your zeal, and your strength, O kings, hold back, as best you can, the host of the Pandavas.'
Verse 5
tato durmarṣaṇo bhīmam abhyagacchat sutas tava ārād dṛṣṭvā kiran bāṇair icchan droṇasya jīvitam
Then your son Durmarshana advanced against Bhima, seeing him from afar, showering arrows, longing to preserve Drona's life.
Verse 6
taṃ bāṇair avatastāra kruddho mṛtyum ivāhave taṃ ca bhīmo 'tudad bāṇais tadāsīt tumulaṃ mahat
Wrathful, he overspread with arrows that (Bhima) who was like Death itself in battle; and Bhima in turn smote him with arrows. Then arose a great tumult.
Verse 7
ta īśvarasamādiṣṭāḥ prājñāḥ śūrāḥ prahāriṇaḥ bāhyaṃ mṛtyubhayaṃ kṛtvā pratyatiṣṭhan parān yudhi
Those wise, heroic smiters, commanded by their lord, set aside all fear of death and stood firm against the foe in battle.
Verse 8
kṛtavarmā śineḥ putraṃ droṇaprepsuṃ viśāṃ pate paryavārayad āyāntaṃ śūraṃ samitiśobhanam
Kritavarman, O lord of peoples, held back the advancing son of Shini -- that hero, resplendent in the assembly of warriors -- who was eager to reach Drona.
Verse 9
taṃ śaineyaḥ śaravrātaiḥ kruddhaḥ kruddham avārayat kṛtavarmā ca śaineyaṃ matto mattam iva dvipam
The wrathful grandson of Shini held back the wrathful (Kritavarman) with volleys of arrows; and Kritavarman held back the son of Shini, as one elephant in rut holds back another.
Verse 10
saindhavaḥ kṣatradharmāṇam āpatantaṃ śaraughiṇam ugradhanvā maheṣvāsaṃ yatto droṇād avārayat
The ruler of the Sindhus, a great archer of fierce bow, striving hard, held back from Drona the onrushing Kshatradharman, who poured forth floods of arrows.
Verse 11
kṣatradharmā sindhupateś chittvā ketanakārmuke nārācair bahubhiḥ kruddhaḥ sarvamarmasv atāḍayat
Kshatradharman, having cut away the standard and the bow of the lord of the Sindhus, in his wrath struck him in all his vital parts with many iron shafts.
Verse 12
athānyad dhanur ādāya saindhavaḥ kṛtahastavat vivyādha kṣatradharmāṇaṃ raṇe sarvāyasaiḥ śaraiḥ
Then the Saindhava, taking up another bow, with practiced hand pierced Kshatradharman in the battle with arrows made wholly of iron.
Verse 13
yuyutsuṃ pāṇḍavārthāya yatamānaṃ mahāratham subāhur bhrātaraṃ śūraṃ yatto droṇād avārayat
Subahu, striving, held back from Drona his own brave brother Yuyutsu, that mighty car-warrior who was exerting himself for the Pandavas' cause.
Verse 14
subāhoḥ sadhanurbāṇāv asyataḥ parighopamau yuyutsuḥ śitapītābhyāṃ kṣurābhyām acchinad bhujau
As Subahu, whose arms were like iron bludgeons, was loosing bow and arrows, Yuyutsu with two sharp, whetted razor-headed shafts cut off both his arms.
Verse 15
rājānaṃ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhaṃ dharmātmānaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram veleva sāgaraṃ kṣubdhaṃ madrarāṭ samavārayat
The king of the Madras held back King Yudhishthira, best of the Pandavas, the righteous-souled, as the shore holds back the surging sea.
Verse 16
taṃ dharmarājo bahubhir marmabhidbhir avākirat madreśas taṃ catuḥṣaṣṭyā śarair viddhvānadad bhṛśam
The Dharma-king covered him with many shafts that pierce the vitals; and the lord of the Madras, piercing him with sixty-four arrows, roared aloud.
Verse 17
tasya nānadataḥ ketum uccakarta sakārmukam kṣurābhyāṃ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhas tata uccukruśur janāḥ
As he was roaring, the best of the Pandavas with two razor-headed shafts struck down his standard together with his bow; and thereupon the troops shouted aloud.
Verse 18
tathaiva rājā bāhlīko rājānaṃ drupadaṃ śaraiḥ ādravantaṃ sahānīkaṃ sahānīko nyavārayat
Likewise King Bahlika, with his own forces, held back with arrows King Drupada, who was rushing on together with his troops.
Verse 19
tad yuddham abhavad ghoraṃ vṛddhayoḥ sahasenayoḥ yathā mahāyūthapayor dvipayoḥ saṃprabhinnayoḥ
Terrible was that battle between those two aged (kings) with their armies, like that between two great herd-leading elephants in rut.
Verse 20
vindānuvindāv āvantyau virāṭaṃ matsyam ārcchatām sahasainyau sahānīkaṃ yathendrāgnī purā balim
Vinda and Anuvinda of Avanti, with their troops, assailed Virata the Matsya (king) with his forces, as Indra and Agni of old assailed Bali.
Verse 21
tad utpiñjalakaṃ yuddham āsīd devāsuropamam matsyānāṃ kekayaiḥ sārdham abhītāśvarathadvipam
That confused and tumultuous battle of the Matsyas together with the Kekayas -- with steeds, cars, and elephants all fearless -- resembled that of the gods and the Asuras.
Verse 22
nākuliṃ tu śatānīkaṃ bhūtakarmā sabhāpatiḥ asyantam iṣujālāni yāntaṃ droṇād avārayat
But Bhutakarman, also called Sabhapati, held back from Drona the son of Nakula, Shatanika, who advanced shooting nets of arrows.
Verse 23
tato nakuladāyādas tribhir bhallaiḥ susaṃśitaiḥ cakre vibāhuśirasaṃ bhūtakarmāṇam āhave
Then the son of Nakula, with three well-whetted broad-headed shafts, made Bhutakarman armless and headless in that battle.
Verse 24
sutasomaṃ tu vikrāntam āpatantaṃ śaraughiṇam droṇāyābhimukhaṃ vīraṃ viviṃśatir avārayat
But Vivimsati held back the valiant hero Sutasoma, who was rushing on toward Drona, pouring forth floods of arrows.
Verse 25
sutasomas tu saṃkruddhaḥ svapitṛvyam ajihmagaiḥ viviṃśatiṃ śarair viddhvā nābhyavartata daṃśitaḥ
But Sutasoma, greatly enraged, having pierced his own uncle Vivimsati with straight-flying arrows, mailed as he was, did not turn back.
Verse 26
atha bhīmarathaḥ śālvam āśugair āyasaiḥ śitaiḥ ṣaḍbhiḥ sāśvaniyantāram anayad yamasādanam
Then Bhimaratha, with six swift, sharp iron arrows, sent Shalva, together with his steeds and driver, to the abode of Yama.
Verse 27
śrutakarmāṇam āyāntaṃ mayūrasadṛśair hayaiḥ caitrasenir mahārāja tava pautro nyavārayat
Your grandson, the son of Chitrasena, O great king, held back Shrutakarman, who advanced borne by steeds resembling peacocks.
Verse 28
tau pautrau tava durdharṣau parasparavadhaiṣiṇau pitṝṇām arthasiddhyarthaṃ cakratur yuddham uttamam
Those two grandsons of yours, both unassailable, each seeking to slay the other, waged a splendid battle for the accomplishment of their fathers' aims.
Verse 29
tiṣṭhantam agrato dṛṣṭvā prativindhyaṃ tam āhave drauṇir mānaṃ pituḥ kurvan mārgaṇaiḥ samavārayat
Seeing Prativindhya stationed in the van of that battle, the son of Drona, upholding his father's honor, held him back with his arrows.
Verse 30
taṃ kruddhaḥ prativivyādha prativindhyaḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ siṃhalāṅgūlalakṣmāṇaṃ pitur arthe vyavasthitam
Prativindhya, enraged, pierced him in return with sharp arrows -- (Ashvatthaman) who bore the device of a lion's tail on his banner and stood there for his father's sake.
Verse 31
pravapann iva bījāni bījakāle nararṣabha drauṇāyanir draupadeyaṃ śaravarṣair avākirat
As a sower scatters seeds at the sowing season, O bull among men, so did the son of Drona cover the son of Draupadi with showers of arrows.
Verse 32
yas tu śūratamo rājan senayor ubhayor mataḥ taṃ paṭaccarahantāraṃ lakṣmaṇaḥ samavārayat
But Lakshmana held back that slayer of the Patachcharas who, O king, was reckoned in both armies the bravest of the brave.
Verse 33
sa lakṣmaṇasyeṣvasanaṃ chittvā lakṣma ca bhārata lakṣmaṇe śarajālāni visṛjan bahv aśobhata
He, O Bharata, having cut off Lakshmana's bow and his banner-device, shone resplendent as he loosed nets of arrows upon Lakshmana.
Verse 34
vikarṇas tu mahāprājño yājñaseniṃ śikhaṇḍinam paryavārayad āyāntaṃ yuvānaṃ samare yuvā
But the highly wise Vikarna, himself a youth, held back in battle the advancing youthful Shikhandin, son of Yajnasena.
Verse 35
tatas tam iṣujālena yājñaseniḥ samāvṛṇot vidhūya tad bāṇajālaṃ babhau tava suto balī
Then the son of Yajnasena enveloped him with a net of arrows; but your mighty son, shaking off that net of arrows, shone forth.
Verse 36
aṅgado 'bhimukhaḥ śūram uttamaujasam āhave droṇāyābhimukhaṃ yāntaṃ vatsadantair avārayat
Angada, facing him, held back with calf-tooth-headed shafts the hero Uttamaujas, who was advancing toward Drona in the battle.
Verse 37
sa saṃprahāras tumulas tayoḥ puruṣasiṃhayoḥ sainikānāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ tayoś ca prītivardhanaḥ
That tumultuous combat between those two lions among men heightened the delight both of all the soldiers and of the two warriors themselves.
Verse 38
durmukhas tu maheṣvāso vīraṃ purujitaṃ balī droṇāyābhimukhaṃ yāntaṃ kuntibhojam avārayat
But the mighty great archer Durmukha held back the heroic Purujit Kuntibhoja, who was advancing toward Drona.
Verse 39
sa durmukhaṃ bhruvor madhye nārācena vyatāḍayat tasya tad vibabhau vaktraṃ sanālam iva paṅkajam
Purujit struck Durmukha between the brows with an iron shaft; and his face therewith shone like a lotus upon its stalk.
Verse 40
karṇas tu kekayān bhrātṝn pañca lohitakadhvajān droṇāyābhimukhaṃ yātāñ śaravarṣair avārayat
But Karna held back with showers of arrows the five Kekaya brothers, bearing red standards, who were advancing toward Drona.
Verse 41
And they, greatly enraged, covered him with volleys of arrows; and he in turn covered them again and again with nets of arrows.
Verse 42
Neither Karna nor those five could any longer be seen, veiled in arrows -- they with their steeds, drivers, standards, and cars, all covered over by one another's shafts.
Verse 43
putras te durjayaś caiva jayaś ca vijayaś ca ha nīlaṃ kāśyaṃ jayaṃ śūrās trayas trīn pratyavārayan
Your sons Durjaya, Jaya, and Vijaya -- those three heroes -- held back three foes: Nila, the prince of the Kashis, and Jaya.
Verse 44
tad yuddham abhavad ghoram īkṣitṛprītivardhanam siṃhavyāghratarakṣūṇāṃ yathebhamahiṣarṣabhaiḥ
That battle became terrible, heightening the delight of the onlookers, like that of lions, tigers, and hyenas with elephants, buffaloes, and bulls.
Verse 45
kṣemadhūrtibṛhantau tau bhrātarau sātvataṃ yudhi droṇāyābhimukhaṃ yāntaṃ śarais tīkṣṇais tatakṣatuḥ
Those two brothers, Kshemadhurti and Brihanta, in battle mangled with sharp arrows the Satvata (Satyaki), who was advancing toward Drona.
Verse 46
tayos tasya ca tad yuddham atyadbhutam ivābhavat siṃhasya dvipamukhyābhyāṃ prabhinnābhyāṃ yathā vane
That battle between the two of them and him became most wonderful, like that of a lion with two foremost elephants in rut in the forest.
Verse 47
rājānaṃ tu tathāmbaṣṭham ekaṃ yuddhābhinandinam cedirājaḥ śarān asyan kruddho droṇād avārayat
And the king of the Chedis, wrathfully shooting arrows, held back from Drona the king of the Ambashthas, that solitary lover of battle.
Verse 48
tam ambaṣṭho 'sthibhedinyā niravidhyac chalākayā sa tyaktvā saśaraṃ cāpaṃ rathād bhūmim athāpatat
The Ambashtha pierced him with a bone-splitting shaft; and he, letting go his bow with its arrow, fell from his car to the ground.
Verse 49
vārdhakṣemiṃ tu vārṣṇeyaṃ kṛpaḥ śāradvataḥ śaraiḥ akṣudraḥ kṣudrakair droṇāt kruddharūpam avārayat
But Kripa, son of Sharadvata, himself no mean warrior, held back from Drona with small arrows the wrathful Vardhakshemi of the Vrishni race.
Verse 50
yudhyantau kṛpavārṣṇeyau ye 'paśyaṃś citrayodhinau te yuddhasaktamanaso nānyā bubudhire kriyāḥ
Those who beheld Kripa and the Vrishni warrior fighting, both skilled in varied modes of war, became so absorbed in that combat that they took note of no other deed.
Verse 51
saumadattis tu rājānaṃ maṇimantam atandritam paryavārayad āyāntaṃ yaśo droṇasya vardhayan
But the son of Somadatta, enhancing the glory of Drona, held back the advancing, tireless King Manimat.
Verse 52
sa saumadattes tvaritaś chittveṣvasanaketane punaḥ patākāṃ sūtaṃ ca chatraṃ cāpātayad rathāt
He (Manimat), swift of hand, having cut off the bow and standard of Somadatta's son, further struck down from his car his banner, his driver, and his umbrella.
Verse 53
athāplutya rathāt tūrṇaṃ yūpaketur amitrahā sāśvasūtadhvajarathaṃ taṃ cakarta varāsinā
Then the slayer of foes who bore the sacrificial-stake device on his banner, swiftly leaping down from his car, cut down (Manimat), together with his steeds, driver, standard, and car, with his excellent sword.
Verse 54
rathaṃ ca svaṃ samāsthāya dhanur ādāya cāparam svayaṃ yacchan hayān rājan vyadhamat pāṇḍavīṃ camūm
And mounting his own car again, taking up another bow, and guiding his steeds himself, O king, he scattered the Pandava host.
Verse 55
musalair mudgaraiś cakrair bhiṇḍipālaiḥ paraśvadhaiḥ pāṃsuvātāgnisalilair bhasmaloṣṭhatṛṇadrumaiḥ
With pestles, maces, discs, javelins, and battle-axes; with dust, wind, fire, and water; with ashes, clods of earth, straw, and trees --
Verse 56
ārujan prarujan bhañjan nighnan vidrāvayan kṣipan senāṃ vibhīṣayann āyād droṇaprepsur ghaṭotkacaḥ
-- shattering, crushing, breaking, striking, routing, and hurling (the foe), and terrifying the army, came Ghatotkacha, eager to reach Drona.
Verse 57
taṃ tu nānāpraharaṇair nānāyuddhaviśeṣaṇaiḥ rākṣasaṃ rākṣasaḥ kruddhaḥ samājaghne hy alambusaḥ
But the Rakshasa Alambusha, enraged, assailed that Rakshasa (Ghatotkacha) with diverse weapons and diverse modes of warfare.
Verse 58
tayos tad abhavad yuddhaṃ rakṣogrāmaṇimukhyayoḥ tādṛg yādṛk purā vṛttaṃ śambarāmararājayoḥ
That battle between those two foremost of Rakshasa chiefs was such as that which took place of old between Shambara and the king of the gods.
Verse 59
evaṃ dvaṃdvaśatāny āsan rathavāraṇavājinām padātīnāṃ ca bhadraṃ te tava teṣāṃ ca saṃkulam
Thus, blessings be upon you, there were hundreds of single combats, a confused melee of chariots, elephants, horses, and foot-soldiers, both of yours and of theirs.
Verse 60
naitādṛśo dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ saṃgrāmo naiva ca śrutaḥ droṇasyābhāvabhāveṣu prasaktānāṃ yathābhavat
Never before was such a battle seen or heard of as that which took place among those intent upon the destruction or the protection of Drona.
Verse 61
idaṃ ghoram idaṃ citram idaṃ raudram iti prabho tatra yuddhāny adṛśyanta pratatāni bahūni ca
'This is terrible; this is wondrous; this is fierce' -- thus, O lord, were many far-extending battles seen there.
