  1. Verse 1

saṃjaya uvāca dṛṣṭvā tu saṃnivṛttāṃs tān saṃśaptakagaṇān punaḥ vāsudevaṃ mahātmānam arjunaḥ samabhāṣata

Sañjaya said: Seeing those hosts of the saṃśaptakas turned back again, Arjuna spoke to the great-souled Vāsudeva:

  2. Verse 2

codayāśvān hṛṣīkeśa saṃśaptakagaṇān prati naite hāsyanti saṃgrāmaṃ jīvanta iti me matiḥ

'Urge the horses, O Hṛṣīkeśa, against the hosts of the saṃśaptakas; these will not quit the battle while they live — such is my thought.'

  3. Verse 3

paśya me 'strabalaṃ ghoraṃ bāhvor iṣvasanasya ca adyaitān pātayiṣyāmi kruddho rudraḥ paśūn iva

'Behold the dreadful weapon-might of my arms and of my bow: this day I shall fell them, as Rudra enraged fells the beasts.'

  4. Verse 4

tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ smitaṃ kṛtvā pariṇandya śivena tam prāveśayata durdharṣo yatra yatraicchad arjunaḥ

Then Kṛṣṇa, smiling and greeting him with a blessing, the unassailable one, drove in wherever Arjuna wished.

  5. Verse 5

babhrāje sa ratho 'tyartham uhyamāno raṇe tadā uhyamānam ivākāśe vimānaṃ pāṇḍurair hayaiḥ

That chariot, borne along in battle then, shone exceedingly, like an aerial car borne through the sky by white steeds.

  6. Verse 6

maṇḍalāni tataś cakre gatapratyāgatāni ca yathā śakraratho rājan yuddhe devāsure purā

Then he wrought circling-figures, going and returning, as of old the chariot of Śakra, O king, in the war of gods and Asuras.

  7. Verse 7

atha nārāyaṇāḥ kruddhā vividhāyudhapāṇayaḥ chādayantaḥ śaravrātaiḥ parivavrur dhanaṃjayam

Then the Nārāyaṇas, enraged, weapons of many kinds in hand, covering him with masses of arrows, surrounded Dhanaṃjaya.

  8. Verse 8

adṛśyaṃ ca muhūrtena cakrus te bharatarṣabha kṛṣṇena sahitaṃ yuddhe kuntīputraṃ dhanaṃjayam

And in a moment they made Kuntī's son Dhanaṃjaya, together with Kṛṣṇa, invisible in the battle, O bull of the Bharatas.

  9. Verse 9

kruddhas tu phalgunaḥ saṃkhye dviguṇīkṛtavikramaḥ gāṇḍīvam upasaṃmṛjya tūrṇaṃ jagrāha saṃyuge

But Phalguna, enraged in battle, his valour doubled, wiping the Gāṇḍīva, quickly grasped it in the fray.

  10. Verse 10

baddhvā ca bhṛkuṭīṃ vaktre krodhasya pratilakṣaṇam devadattaṃ mahāśaṅkhaṃ pūrayām āsa pāṇḍavaḥ

And, binding a frown upon his face — the mark of wrath — the Pāṇḍava filled the great conch Devadatta with his breath.

  11. Verse 11

athāstram arisaṃghaghnaṃ tvāṣṭram abhyasyad arjunaḥ tato rūpasahasrāṇi prādurāsan pṛthak pṛthak

Then Arjuna discharged the Tvāṣṭra weapon, the slayer of the enemy's hosts; then thousands of forms appeared, each apart.

  12. Verse 12

ātmanaḥ pratirūpais tair nānārūpair vimohitāḥ anyonyam arjunaṃ matvā svam ātmānaṃ ca jaghnire

Bewildered by those likenesses of himself, of various shapes, deeming one another to be Arjuna, they slew their own selves.

  13. Verse 13

ayam arjuno 'yaṃ govinda imau yādavapāṇḍavau iti bruvāṇāḥ saṃmūḍhā jaghnur anyonyam āhave

'This is Arjuna, this is Govinda, here are the two — the Yādava and the Pāṇḍava!' — thus saying, bewildered, they slew one another in battle.

  14. Verse 14

mohitāḥ paramāstreṇa kṣayaṃ jagmuḥ parasparam aśobhanta raṇe yodhāḥ puṣpitā iva kiṃśukāḥ

Bewildered by the supreme weapon, they went to destruction, each by the other; the warriors shone in battle like blossoming kiṃśuka trees.

  15. Verse 15

tataḥ śarasahasrāṇi tair vimuktāni bhasmasāt kṛtvā tad astraṃ tān vīrān anayad yamasādanam

Then the thousands of arrows loosed by them, that weapon reduced to ashes, and led those heroes to the abode of Yama.

  16. Verse 16

atha prahasya bībhatsur lalitthān mālavān api mācellakāṃs trigartāṃś ca yaudheyāṃś cārdayac charaiḥ

Then Bībhatsu, laughing, afflicted with arrows the Lalitthas and the Mālavas, the Mācellakas, the Trigartas, and the Yaudheyas.

  17. Verse 17

te vadhyamānā vīreṇa kṣatriyāḥ kālacoditāḥ vyasṛjañ śaravarṣāṇi pārthe nānāvidhāni ca

Being slain by the hero, those Kṣatriyas, urged on by fate, loosed showers of arrows of many kinds at Pārtha.

  18. Verse 18

Then neither Arjuna there, nor his chariot, nor Keśava was seen, enveloped by that dreadful shower of arrows.

  19. Verse 19

tatas te labdhalakṣyatvād anyonyam abhicukruśuḥ hatau kṛṣṇāv iti prītā vāsāṃsy ādudhuvus tadā

Then they, thinking they had hit their mark, cried out to one another; delighted, [saying] 'The two Kṛṣṇas are slain!', they then waved their garments.

  20. Verse 20

bherīmṛdaṅgaśaṅkhāṃś ca dadhmur vīrāḥ sahasraśaḥ siṃhanādaravāṃś cogrāṃś cakrire tatra māriṣa

The heroes blew kettledrums, tabors, and conches by the thousand, and made fierce lion-roars there, O honoured one.

  21. Verse 21

tataḥ prasiṣvide kṛṣṇaḥ khinnaś cārjunam abravīt kvāsi pārtha na paśye tvāṃ kaccij jīvasi śatruhan

Then Kṛṣṇa broke into sweat, and, wearied, said to Arjuna: 'Where are you, Pārtha? I do not see you; do you yet live, O slayer of foes?'

  22. Verse 22

tasya taṃ mānuṣaṃ bhāvaṃ bhāvajño ''jñāya pāṇḍavaḥ vāyavyāstreṇa tair astāṃ śaravṛṣṭim apāharat

Knowing that human mood of his, the Pāṇḍava, reader of moods, with the Vāyavya weapon bore away the arrow-rain loosed by them.

  23. Verse 23

tataḥ saṃśaptakavrātān sāśvadviparathāyudhān uvāha bhagavān vāyuḥ śuṣkaparṇacayān iva

Then the throngs of the saṃśaptakas, with their horses, elephants, chariots, and weapons, the blessed Wind bore off, like heaps of dry leaves.

  24. Verse 24

uhyamānās tu te rājan bahv aśobhanta vāyunā praḍīnāḥ pakṣiṇaḥ kāle vṛkṣebhya iva māriṣa

Being borne along by the wind, they showed greatly, O king, like birds flown up in season from the trees, O honoured one.

  25. Verse 25

tāṃs tathā vyākulīkṛtya tvaramāṇo dhanaṃjayaḥ jaghāna niśitair bāṇaiḥ sahasrāṇi śatāni ca

Having thus thrown them into confusion, Dhanaṃjaya, hastening, slew with sharp arrows thousands and hundreds.

  26. Verse 26

śirāṃsi bhallair aharad bāhūn api ca sāyudhān hastihastopamāṃś corūñ śarair urvyām apātayat

He took off heads with broad-headed shafts, and arms too with their weapons, and thighs like elephants' trunks he felled to the earth with arrows.

  27. Verse 27

pṛṣṭhacchinnān vicaraṇān vimastiṣkekṣaṇāṅgulīn nānāṅgāvayavair hīnāṃś cakārārīn dhanaṃjayaḥ

Cut in the back, deprived of feet, of brains, eyes, and fingers, bereft of their various limbs — thus did Dhanaṃjaya make the foes.

  28. Verse 28

gandharvanagarākārān vidhivat kalpitān rathān śarair viśakalīkurvaṃś cakre vyaśvarathadvipān

Chariots like Gandharva-cities, duly fashioned, he made into fragments with arrows, deprived of their horses, cars, and elephants.

  29. Verse 29

muṇḍatālavanānīva tatra tatra cakāśire chinnadhvajarathavrātāḥ ke cit ke cit kva cit kva cit

Like groves of shorn palm-trees they gleamed here and there — the throngs of chariots with severed banners, some in one place, some in another.

  30. Verse 30

sottarāyudhino nāgāḥ sapatākāṅkuśāyudhāḥ petuḥ śakrāśanihatā drumavanta ivācalāḥ

Elephants with their upper weapons, armed with banners and goads, fell, struck as by Śakra's thunderbolt, like mountains with their trees.

  31. Verse 31

cāmarāpīḍakavacāḥ srastāntranayanāsavaḥ sārohās turagāḥ petuḥ pārthabāṇahatāḥ kṣitau

With yak-tail plumes, crests, and armour, their entrails, eyes, and life slipping out, the horses with their riders fell, slain by Pārtha's arrows, to the ground.

  32. Verse 32

vipraviddhāsinakharāś chinnavarmarṣṭiśaktayaḥ pattayaś chinnavarmāṇaḥ kṛpaṇaṃ śerate hatāḥ

Their swords and daggers scattered, their armour, lances, and spears sundered, the foot-soldiers, their mail cut, lay slain, piteously.

  33. Verse 33

tair hatair hanyamānaiś ca patadbhiḥ patitair api bhramadbhir niṣṭanadbhiś ca ghoram āyodhanaṃ babhau

With those slain and being slain, with the falling and the fallen, with those whirling about and groaning, the battlefield looked dreadful.

  34. Verse 34

rajaś ca mahad udbhūtaṃ śāntaṃ rudhiravṛṣṭibhiḥ mahī cāpy abhavad durgā kabandhaśatasaṃkulā

And a great dust that had arisen was laid by showers of blood; and the earth, too, became hard to traverse, crowded with hundreds of headless trunks.

  35. Verse 35

tad babhau raudrabībhatsaṃ bībhatsor yānam āhave ākrīḍa iva rudrasya ghnataḥ kālātyaye paśūn

That progress of Bībhatsu in battle appeared dreadful and hideous, like the playground of Rudra as he slays the beasts at the passing of the age.

  36. Verse 36

te vadhyamānāḥ pārthena vyākulāśvarathadvipāḥ tam evābhimukhāḥ kṣīṇāḥ śakrasyātithitāṃ gatāḥ

Being slain by Pārtha, their horses, chariots, and elephants in confusion, yet facing him, diminished, they attained to the guest-state of Śakra.

  37. Verse 37

sā bhūmir bharataśreṣṭha nihatais tair mahārathaiḥ āstīrṇā saṃbabhau sarvā pretībhūtaiḥ samantataḥ

That ground, O best of the Bharatas, strewn with those slain great car-warriors turned to corpses, appeared covered [with them] on every side.

  38. Verse 38

etasminn antare caiva pramatte savyasācini vyūḍhānīkas tato droṇo yudhiṣṭhiram upādravat

And in this very interval, the left-handed archer being intent elsewhere, Droṇa then, his army arrayed, rushed upon Yudhiṣṭhira.

  39. Verse 39

taṃ pratyagṛhṇaṃs tvaritā vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraṃ parīpsantas tadāsīt tumulaṃ mahat

Him the smiters, their ranks arrayed, hastily received, seeking to save Yudhiṣṭhira; then there was a great tumult.
