Verse 1
saṃjaya uvāca tataḥ saṃśaptakā rājan same deśe vyavasthitāḥ vyūhyānīkaṃ rathair eva candrārdhākhyaṃ mudānvitāḥ
Sañjaya said: Then the saṃśaptakas, O king, stationed on level ground, filled with joy, having arrayed their line of chariots in what is called the half-moon formation—
Verse 2
te kirīṭinam āyāntaṃ dṛṣṭvā harṣeṇa māriṣa udakrośan naravyāghrāḥ śabdena mahatā tadā
seeing the Diademed one coming, out of gladness, O honoured one, those tigers among men cried out with a great sound.
Verse 3
sa śabdaḥ pradiśaḥ sarvā diśaḥ khaṃ ca samāvṛṇot āvṛtatvāc ca lokasya nāsīt tatra pratisvanaḥ
That sound filled all the intermediate points, all the quarters, and the sky; and, the whole world being filled, there was there no echo.
Verse 4
atīva saṃprahṛṣṭāṃs tān upalabhya dhanaṃjayaḥ kiṃ cid abhyutsmayan kṛṣṇam idaṃ vacanam abravīt
Perceiving them exceedingly joyful, Dhanaṃjaya, smiling a little, spoke this word to Kṛṣṇa:
Verse 5
paśyaitān devakīmātar mumūrṣūn adya saṃyuge bhrātṝṃs traigartakān evaṃ roditavye praharṣitān
'Behold, O son of Devakī, these brothers, the Trigartas, doomed to die this day in battle, rejoicing when they ought rather to weep.'
Verse 6
atha vā harṣakālo 'yaṃ traigartānām asaṃśayam kunarair duravāpān hi lokān prāpsyanty anuttamān
'Or rather, this is indeed a time of joy for the Trigartas, without doubt; for they will attain the highest worlds, hard for base men to reach.'
Verse 7
evam uktvā mahābāhur hṛṣīkeśaṃ tato 'rjunaḥ āsasāda raṇe vyūḍhāṃ traigartānām anīkinīm
Having spoken thus to Hṛṣīkeśa, the mighty-armed Arjuna then came in battle upon the arrayed host of the Trigartas.
Verse 8
sa devadattam ādāya śaṅkhaṃ hemapariṣkṛtam dadhmau vegena mahatā phalgunaḥ pūrayan diśaḥ
Taking up the Devadatta, his conch adorned with gold, Phalguna blew it with great force, filling the quarters.
Verse 9
tena śabdena vitrastā saṃśaptakavarūthinī niśceṣṭāvasthitā saṃkye aśmasāramayī yathā
By that sound the saṃśaptaka host, terrified, stood motionless in battle, as if made of iron.
Verse 10
vāhās teṣāṃ vivṛttākṣāḥ stabdhakarṇaśirodharāḥ viṣṭabdhacaraṇā mūtraṃ rudhiraṃ ca prasusruvuḥ
Their horses, with rolling eyes, ears, necks, and heads rigid, their legs planted stiff, let flow urine and blood.
Verse 11
upalabhya ca te saṃjñām avasthāpya ca vāhinīm yugapat pāṇḍuputrāya cikṣipuḥ kaṅkapatriṇaḥ
And, recovering their senses and steadying the host, they all at once cast their heron-feathered shafts at the son of Pāṇḍu.
Verse 12
tāny arjunaḥ sahasrāṇi daśa pañcaiva cāśugaiḥ anāgatāny eva śaraiś cicchedāśuparākramaḥ
Those fifteen thousand shafts, Arjuna, of swift prowess, cut with his own swift arrows before they even reached him.
Verse 13
tato 'rjunaṃ śitair bāṇair daśabhir daśabhiḥ punaḥ pratyavidhyaṃs tataḥ pārthas tān avidhyat tribhis tribhiḥ
Then they pierced Arjuna in return with ten sharp arrows each; and Pārtha then pierced them with three each.
Verse 14
ekaikas tu tataḥ pārthaṃ rājan vivyādha pañcabhiḥ sa ca tān prativivyādha dvābhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ parākramī
Then each one pierced Pārtha with five, O king; and he, the valiant one, pierced them in return with two each.
Verse 15
bhūya eva tu saṃrabdhās te 'rjunaṃ sahakeśavam āpūrayañ śarais tīkṣṇais taṭākam iva vṛṣṭibhiḥ
Then again, enraged, they filled Arjuna together with Keśava with sharp arrows, as a pool is filled with showers of rain.
Verse 16
tataḥ śarasahasrāṇi prāpatann arjunaṃ prati bhramarāṇām iva vrātāḥ phulladrumagaṇe vane
Then thousands of arrows fell upon Arjuna, like swarms of bees in a forest of flowering trees.
Verse 17
tataḥ subāhus triṃśadbhir adrisāramayair dṛḍhaiḥ avidhyad iṣubhir gāḍhaṃ kirīṭe savyasācinam
Then Subāhu, with thirty firm shafts of iron, pierced deeply the left-handed archer in his diadem.
Verse 18
taiḥ kirīṭī kirīṭasthair hemapuṅkhair ajihmagaiḥ śātakumbhamayāpīḍo babhau yūpa ivocchritaḥ
By those arrows fixed in his diadem, gold-feathered and straight, the Diademed one, with the gold for his crest-jewel, shone like an uplifted sacrificial post.
Verse 19
hastāvāpaṃ subāhos tu bhallena yudhi pāṇḍavaḥ ciccheda taṃ caiva punaḥ śaravarṣair avākirat
With a broad-headed arrow the Pāṇḍava cut off Subāhu's hand-guard in battle, and again covered him with showers of arrows.
Verse 20
tataḥ suśarmā daśabhiḥ surathaś ca kirīṭinam sudharmā sudhanuś caiva subāhuś ca samarpayan
Then Suśarman with ten, and Suratha, pierced the Diademed one; and Sudharman, Sudhanus, and Subāhu joined in, delivering their shafts.
Verse 21
tāṃs tu sarvān pṛthag bāṇair vānarapravaradhvajaḥ pratyavidhyad dhvajāṃś caiṣāṃ bhallaiś ciccheda kāñcanān
But all of them the ape-bannered one pierced in return with separate arrows, and cut their golden banners with broad-headed shafts.
Verse 22
sudhanvano dhanuś chittvā hayān vai nyavadhīc charaiḥ athāsya saśirastrāṇaṃ śiraḥ kāyād apāharat
Cutting Sudhanvan's bow, he slew his horses with arrows; then he bore off from his body his head, with its helmet.
Verse 23
tasmiṃs tu patite vīre trastās tasya padānugāḥ vyadravanta bhayād bhītā yena dauryodhanaṃ balam
That hero having fallen, his foot-followers, terrified, fled in fear to where the army of Duryodhana was.
Verse 24
tato jaghāna saṃkruddho vāsavis tāṃ mahācamūm śarajālair avicchinnais tamaḥ sūrya ivāṃśubhiḥ
Then the son of Vāsava, enraged, smote that great host with unbroken nets of arrows, as the sun dispels darkness with its rays.
Verse 25
tato bhagne bale tasmin viprayāte samantataḥ savyasācini saṃkruddhe traigartān bhayam āviśat
Then, that force being broken and dispersed on every side, the left-handed archer being enraged, fear entered the Trigartas.
Verse 26
te vadhyamānāḥ pārthena śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ amuhyaṃs tatra tatraiva trastā mṛgagaṇā iva
Being slain by Pārtha with straight-jointed shafts, they were bewildered here and there, like terrified herds of deer.
Verse 27
tatas trigartarāṭ kruddhas tān uvāca mahārathān alaṃ drutena vaḥ śūrā na bhayaṃ kartum arhatha
Then the king of the Trigartas, enraged, said to those great car-warriors: 'Enough of flight, O heroes! You ought not to give way to fear.'
Verse 28
śaptvā tu śapathān ghorān sarvasainyasya paśyataḥ gatvā dauryodhanaṃ sainyaṃ kiṃ vai vakṣyatha mukhyagāḥ
'Having sworn dreadful oaths in the sight of the whole army, and going back to Duryodhana's host — what, indeed, will you, the foremost, say?'
Verse 29
nāvahāsyāḥ kathaṃ loke karmaṇānena saṃyuge bhavema sahitāḥ sarve nivartadhvaṃ yathābalam
'How shall we not become a laughing-stock in the world by this deed in battle? Let us all together turn back and fight to the utmost of our strength.'
Verse 30
evam uktās tu te rājann udakrośan muhur muhuḥ śaṅkhāṃś ca dadhmire vīrā harṣayantaḥ parasparam
Thus addressed, O king, those heroes cried out again and again, and blew their conches, gladdening one another.
Verse 31
tatas te saṃnyavartanta saṃśaptakagaṇāḥ punaḥ nārāyaṇāś ca gopālāḥ kṛtvā mṛtyuṃ nivartanam
Then those hosts of the saṃśaptakas turned back once more, and the Nārāyaṇas and the cowherds too, having made death their retreat.
