Verse 1
saṃjaya uvāca te tathaiva mahārāja daṃśitā raṇamūrdhani saṃdhyāgataṃ sahasrāṃśum ādityam upatasthire
Sanjaya said: Thus mailed, O great king, [standing] at the front of the battle, they waited upon the thousand-rayed sun come to the [morning] twilight.
Verse 2
udite tu sahasrāṃśau taptakāñcanasaprabhe prakāśiteṣu lokeṣu punar yuddham avartata
When the thousand-rayed one had risen, with the splendor of heated gold, and the worlds were made bright, the battle went on again.
Verse 3
dvaṃdvāni yāni tatrāsan saṃsaktāni purodayāt tāny evābhyudite sūrye samasajjanta bhārata
Those duels which were locked there before the [sun's] rising — those same, when the sun had risen, engaged again, O Bharata.
Verse 4
rathair hayā hayair nāgāḥ pādātāś cāpi kuñjaraiḥ hayā hayaiḥ samājagmuḥ pādātāś ca padātibhiḥ saṃsaktāś ca viyuktāś ca yodhāḥ saṃnyapatan raṇe
Horse [met] cars, elephants horse, and foot-soldiers elephants; horse met horse, and foot-soldiers foot-soldiers; locked together and torn apart, the warriors fell upon [one another] in the battle.
Verse 5
te rātrau kṛtakarmāṇaḥ śrāntāḥ sūryasya tejasā kṣutpipāsāparītāṅgā visaṃjñā bahavo 'bhavan
Those who had done their work in the night, wearied by the sun's heat, their limbs beset by hunger and thirst, many became senseless.
Verse 6
śaṅkhabherīmṛdaṅgānāṃ kuñjarāṇāṃ ca garjatām visphāritavikṛṣṭānāṃ kārmukāṇāṃ ca kūjatām
Of conchs, kettledrums and tabors, and of the elephants roaring, and of the bows twanged and drawn, a sound arose —
Verse 7
śabdaḥ samabhavad rājan divispṛg bharatarṣabha dravatāṃ ca padātīnāṃ śastrāṇāṃ vinipātyatām
a sound that touched the sky, O king, O bull of the Bharatas; and [there was the noise] of the rushing foot-soldiers and of the weapons falling,
Verse 8
hayānāṃ heṣatāṃ caiva rathānāṃ ca nivartatām krośatāṃ garjatāṃ caiva tadāsīt tumulaṃ mahat
and of the horses neighing, and of the cars wheeling back, and of [men] crying out and roaring — there arose then a great tumult.
Verse 9
vivṛddhas tumulaḥ śabdo dyām agacchan mahāsvanaḥ nānāyudhanikṛttānāṃ ceṣṭatām āturaḥ svanaḥ
That swollen, tumultuous sound, of great volume, went up to the sky; the anguished cry of those hacked by various weapons and writhing
Verse 10
bhūmāv aśrūyata mahāṃs tadāsīt kṛpaṇaṃ mahat patatāṃ patitānāṃ ca pattyaśvarathahastinām
was heard great upon the earth; then was there great piteousness — of the falling and the fallen, of foot, horse, car and elephant.
Verse 11
teṣu sarveṣv anīkeṣu vyatiṣakteṣv anekaśaḥ sve svāñ jaghnuḥ pare svāṃś ca sve parāṃś ca parān pare
As all those hosts were intermingled in many ways, one's own slew their own, and foes their own, and one's own the foes, and foes the foes.
Verse 12
vīrabāhuvisṛṣṭāś ca yodheṣu ca gajeṣu ca asayaḥ pratyadṛśyanta vāsasāṃ nejaneṣv iva
And the swords let loose by the arms of heroes upon warriors and elephants were seen [flashing], as at the washing-places of garments.
Verse 13
udyatapratipiṣṭānāṃ khaḍgānāṃ vīrabāhubhiḥ sa eva śabdas tadrūpo vāsasāṃ nijyatām iva
Of the swords upraised and dashed down by the arms of heroes, that very sound was of the same kind as of garments being beaten [at the wash].
Verse 14
ardhāsibhis tathā khaḍgais tomaraiḥ saparaśvadhaiḥ nikṛṣṭayuddhaṃ saṃsaktaṃ mahad āsīt sudāruṇam
With half-swords and with [full] swords, with javelins and battle-axes, there was a great close-quarter fight, locked together, exceedingly dreadful.
Verse 15
gajāśvakāyaprabhavāṃ naradehapravāhinīm śastramatsyasusaṃpūrṇāṃ māṃsaśoṇitakardamām
A river, arising from the bodies of elephants and horses, bearing along the bodies of men, full of weapons for its fishes, its mire of flesh and blood —
Verse 16
ārtanādasvanavatīṃ patākāvastraphenilām nadīṃ prāvartayan vīrāḥ paralokapravāhinīm
resounding with cries of anguish, foaming with banners and garments — that river, flowing to the other world, did the heroes cause to flow.
Verse 17
śaraśaktyarditāḥ klāntā rātrimūḍhālpacetasaḥ viṣṭabhya sarvagātrāṇi vyatiṣṭhan gajavājinaḥ saṃśuṣkavadanā vīrāḥ śirobhiś cārukuṇḍalaiḥ
Afflicted by arrows and spears, wearied, dull from the night, their little sense [gone], the elephants and horses stood, bracing all their limbs; and the heroes [stood] with parched faces; and [there lay] heads with lovely earrings,
Verse 18
yuddhopakaraṇaiś cānyais tatra tatra prakāśitaiḥ kravyādasaṃghair ākīrṇaṃ mṛtair ardhamṛtair api nāsīd rathapathas tatra sarvam āyodhanaṃ prati
and other implements of war gleaming here and there; strewn with troops of carrion-eaters, with the dead and the half-dead — there was no path for a car there, over all the battlefield.
Verse 19
majjatsu cakreṣu rathān sattvam āsthāya vājinaḥ kathaṃ cid avahañ śrāntā vepamānāḥ śarārditāḥ kulasattvabalopetā vājino vāraṇopamāḥ
As the wheels sank, the horses, summoning their courage, somehow drew the cars — wearied, trembling, afflicted by arrows — those horses [yet] endowed with breeding, spirit and strength, like elephants.
Verse 20
vihvalaṃ tat samudbhrāntaṃ sabhayaṃ bhāratāturam balam āsīt tadā sarvam ṛte droṇārjunāv ubhau
Reeling, whirled about, filled with fear, that whole Bharata force was then sore afflicted, save only the two, Drona and Arjuna.
Verse 21
tāv evāstāṃ nilayanaṃ tāv ārtāyanam eva ca tāv evānye samāsādya jagmur vaivasvatakṣayam
Those two alone were [each his side's] shelter, and those two alone the refuge of the distressed; while others, encountering those two, went to the abode of Vaivasvata (Yama).
Verse 22
āvignam abhavat sarvaṃ kauravāṇāṃ mahad balam pāñcālānāṃ ca saṃsaktaṃ na prājñāyata kiṃ cana
The whole great army of the Kauravas became agitated, and [that] of the Panchalas, [all] locked together; nothing at all could be discerned.
Verse 23
antakākrīḍasadṛśe bhīrūṇāṃ bhayavardhane pṛthivyāṃ rājavaṃśānām utthite mahati kṣaye
In [that battle] resembling the playground of the Destroyer, increasing the fear of the timid, when a great destruction of the royal lines had arisen upon the earth —
Verse 24
na tatra karṇaṃ na droṇaṃ nārjunaṃ na yudhiṣṭhiram na bhīmasenaṃ na yamau na pāñcālyaṃ na sātyakim
there neither Karna, nor Drona, nor Arjuna, nor Yudhishthira,
Verse 25
na ca duḥśāsanaṃ drauṇiṃ na duryodhanasaubalau na kṛpaṃ madrarājaṃ vā kṛtavarmāṇam eva ca
nor Bhima-sena, nor the twins, nor the Panchala prince (Dhrishtadyumna), nor Satyaki, nor Duhshasana, nor Drona's son (Ashvatthama), nor Duryodhana and the son of Subala (Shakuni),
Verse 26
na cānyān naiva cātmānaṃ na kṣitiṃ na diśas tathā paśyāma rājan saṃsaktān sainyena rajasāvṛtān
nor Kripa, nor the king of the Madras (Shalya), nor Kritavarman, nor any others, nor even ourselves, nor the earth, nor the quarters — did we see, O king, [all] locked together and veiled by the army's dust.
Verse 27
saṃbhrānte tumule ghore rajomeghe samutthite dvitīyām iva saṃprāptām amanyanta niśāṃ tadā
When the confused, tumultuous, dreadful cloud of dust had arisen, they deemed then that a second night had come.
Verse 28
na jñāyante kauraveyā na pāñcālā na pāṇḍavāḥ na diśo na divaṃ norvīṃ na samaṃ viṣamaṃ tathā
The Kauravas were not known, nor the Panchalas, nor the Pandavas; nor the quarters, nor the sky, nor the earth, nor the level and the uneven [ground].
Verse 29
hastasaṃsparśam āpannān parān vāpy atha vā svakān nyapātayaṃs tadā yuddhe narāḥ sma vijayaiṣiṇaḥ
Those who came within the touch of the hand, whether foes or their own, the men, eager for victory, struck them down then in the battle.
Verse 30
uddhūtatvāt tu rajasaḥ prasekāc choṇitasya ca praśaśāma rajo bhaumaṃ śīghratvād anilasya ca
But by the settling of the dust, from the drenching of blood and from the swiftness of the wind, the earthy dust was quelled.
Verse 31
tatra nāgā hayā yodhā rathino 'tha padātayaḥ pārijātavanānīva vyarocan rudhirokṣitāḥ
There the elephants, horses, warriors, car-riders and foot-soldiers, drenched with blood, shone like groves of Parijata [trees in red bloom].
Verse 32
tato duryodhanaḥ karṇo droṇo duḥśāsanas tathā pāṇḍavaiḥ samasajjanta caturbhiś caturo rathāḥ
Then Duryodhana, Karna, Drona and Duhshasana engaged with the Pandavas — four cars with four.
Verse 33
duryodhanaḥ saha bhrātrā yamābhyāṃ samasajjata vṛkodareṇa rādheyo bhāradvājena cārjunaḥ
Duryodhana, with his brother, engaged with the twins; Radha's son (Karna) with Vrikodara (Bhima), and Arjuna with the son of Bharadvaja (Drona).
Verse 34
tad ghoraṃ mahad āścaryaṃ sarve praikṣan samantataḥ ratharṣabhāṇām ugrāṇāṃ saṃnipātam amānuṣam
That dreadful, great marvel all beheld on every side — the more-than-human collision of those fierce bulls among car-warriors.
Verse 35
rathamārgair vicitraiś ca vicitrarathasaṃkulam apaśyan rathino yuddhaṃ vicitraṃ citrayodhinām
By their varied chariot-courses [that field] was crowded with wondrous cars; the car-warriors beheld the wondrous battle of those fighters of varied skill.
Verse 36
yatamānāḥ parākrāntāḥ parasparajigīṣavaḥ jīmūtā iva gharmānte śaravarṣair avākiran
Striving, valiant, each seeking to conquer the other, they rained showers of arrows, like clouds at the end of the hot season.
Verse 37
te rathān sūryasaṃkāśān āsthitāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ aśobhanta yathā meghāḥ śāradāḥ samupasthitāḥ
Those bulls among men, mounted on their sun-bright cars, shone like autumn clouds gathered [in the sky].
Verse 38
spardhinas te maheṣvāsāḥ kṛtayatnā dhanurdharāḥ abhyagacchaṃs tathānyonyaṃ mattā gajavṛṣā iva
Those rival great bowmen, striving, bearers of the bow, advanced upon one another like rutting bull-elephants.
Verse 39
na nūnaṃ dehabhedo 'sti kāle tasmin samāgate yatra sarve na yugapad vyaśīryanta mahārathāḥ
Surely there is no [easy] breaking of the body until the [appointed] time is come, since all those mighty car-warriors were not shattered at once.
Verse 40
bāhubhiś caraṇaiś chinnaiḥ śirobhiś cārukuṇḍalaiḥ kārmukair viśikhaiḥ prāsaiḥ khaḍgaiḥ paraśupaṭṭiśaiḥ
[The field was covered] with arms and feet cut off, with heads [bearing] lovely earrings, with bows, arrows, javelins, swords, battle-axes and pikes,
Verse 41
nālīkakṣuranārācair nakharaiḥ śaktitomaraiḥ anyaiś ca vividhākārair dhautaiḥ praharaṇottamaiḥ
with nalikas, razor-arrows and iron shafts, with claw-weapons, spears and lances, and with other burnished, excellent weapons of various shapes,
Verse 42
citraiś ca vividhākāraiḥ śarīrāvaraṇair api vicitraiś ca rathair bhagnair hataiś ca gajavājibhiḥ
and with variegated body-armor of various forms; and with wondrous cars broken, and with slain elephants and horses;
Verse 43
śūnyaiś ca nagarākārair hatayodhadhvajai rathaiḥ amanuṣyair hayais trastaiḥ kṛṣyamāṇais tatas tataḥ
and with empty cars resembling cities, their warriors and standards slain, [drawn] by man-less, terrified horses dragged here and there,
Verse 44
vātāyamānair asakṛd dhatavīrair alaṃkṛtaiḥ vyajanaiḥ kaṅkaṭaiś caiva dhvajaiś ca vinipātitaiḥ
coursing again and again like the wind, adorned [though their] heroes were slain; and with fans, coats of mail and standards cast down;
जो वीरों के मारे जाने पर भी अलंकृत होकर बारम्बार वायु के समान दौड़ रहे थे; तथा गिराए गए व्यजनों, कवचों और ध्वजों से;
Verse 45
chatrair ābharaṇair vastrair mālyaiś ca susugandhibhiḥ hāraiḥ kirīṭair mukuṭair uṣṇīṣaiḥ kiṅkiṇīgaṇaiḥ
with umbrellas, ornaments, garments, and sweet-scented garlands; with necklaces, diadems, crowns, turbans and clusters of little bells;
छत्रों, आभूषणों, वस्त्रों और सुगन्धित मालाओं से; हारों, किरीटों, मुकुटों, उष्णीषों और घुँघुरुओं के समूहों से;
Verse 46
urasyair maṇibhir niṣkaiś cūḍāmaṇibhir eva ca āsīd āyodhanaṃ tatra nabhas tārāgaṇair iva
with breast-jewels, golden ornaments and crest-jewels — that battlefield there [shone] like the sky with its hosts of stars.
Verse 47
tato duryodhanasyāsīn nakulena samāgamaḥ amarṣitena kruddhasya kruddhenāmarṣitasya ca
Then befell the encounter of Duryodhana with Nakula — of the wrathful with the enraged, and of the enraged with the wrathful.
Verse 48
apasavyaṃ cakārātha mādrīputras tavātmajam kirañ śaraśatair hṛṣṭas tatra nādo mahān abhūt
Then the son of Madri (Nakula) circled thy son, keeping him on his left, scattering hundreds of arrows in delight; and there a great roar arose.
Verse 49
apasavyaṃ kṛtaḥ saṃkhye bhrātṛvyenātyamarṣiṇā so 'marṣitas tam apy ājau praticakre 'pasavyataḥ
Being so circled in battle by his cousin of exceeding wrath, he (Duryodhana), enraged, in turn circled him too in the fight from the left.
Verse 50
tataḥ praticikīrṣantam apasavyaṃ tu te sutam nyavārayata tejasvī nakulaś citramārgavit
Then, as thy son sought to circle [back], the resplendent Nakula, knowing wondrous [chariot-]tracks, warded him off.
Verse 51
sarvato vinivāryainaṃ śarajālena pīḍayan vimukhaṃ nakulaś cakre tat sainyāḥ samapūjayan
Warding him off on every side and pressing him with a net of arrows, Nakula made [Duryodhana] turn away; and the soldiers there applauded.
Verse 52
tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti nakulo babhāṣe tanayaṃ tava saṃsmṛtya sarvaduḥkhāni tava durmantritena ca
“Stand, stand!” said Nakula to thy son, remembering all [their] sorrows and thy evil counsel.
