dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca tasmin praviṣṭe durdharṣe sṛñjayān amitaujasi amṛṣyamāṇe saṃrabdhe kā vo 'bhūd vai matis tadā

Dhritarashtra said: When that unassailable one of measureless energy had entered among the Srinjayas, unable to bear [his grief] and enraged, what then was your resolve?

  2. Verse 2

duryodhanaṃ tathā putram uktvā śāstrātigaṃ mama yat prāviśad ameyātmā kiṃ pārthaḥ pratyapadyata

When, having rebuked my son Duryodhana, the transgressor of instruction, that one of immeasurable soul entered [the host], what did Partha do?

  3. Verse 3

nihate saindhave vīre bhūriśravasi caiva hi yad abhyagān mahātejāḥ pāñcālān aparājitaḥ

When the hero Saindhava had been slain, and Bhurisravas too, and when that one of great energy, unvanquished, advanced against the Panchalas,

  4. Verse 4

kim amanyata durdharṣaḥ praviṣṭe śatrutāpane duryodhanaś ca kiṃ kṛtyaṃ prāptakālam amanyata

what did the unassailable one think, when that scorcher of foes had entered? And what deed suited to the hour did Duryodhana think of?

  5. Verse 5

ke ca taṃ varadaṃ vīram anvayur dvijasattamam ke cāsya pṛṣṭhato 'gacchan vīrāḥ śūrasya yudhyataḥ ke purastād ayudhyanta nighnataḥ śātravān raṇe

Who followed that heroic boon-giver, that best of the twice-born? Who went behind that hero as he fought? Who fought before him as he smote his foes in battle?

  6. Verse 6

manye 'haṃ pāṇḍavān sarvān bhāradvājaśarārditān śiśire kampamānā vai kṛśā gāva ivābhibho

I deem that all the Pandavas, afflicted by the shafts of the son of Bharadvaja, trembled like lean cattle in the frost, O mighty lord.

  7. Verse 7

praviśya sa maheṣvāsaḥ pāñcālān arimardanaḥ kathaṃ nu puruṣavyāghraḥ pañcatvam upajagmivān

Having entered among the Panchalas, that great bowman, that crusher of foes, that tiger among men, how then did he come to his death?

  8. Verse 8

sarveṣu sainyeṣu ca saṃgateṣu; rātrau sameteṣu mahāratheṣu saṃloḍyamāneṣu pṛthagvidheṣu; ke vas tadānīṃ matimanta āsan

When all the hosts were joined together, when the mighty car-warriors met in the night, and were being tossed about in their several ways, who among you were then the wise ones?

  9. Verse 9

hatāṃś caiva viṣaktāṃś ca parābhūtāṃś ca śaṃsasi rathino virathāṃś caiva kṛtān yuddheṣu māmakān

Thou tellest of my men slain, entangled, and worsted, car-warriors made carless in the fighting.

  10. Verse 10

katham eṣāṃ tadā tatra pārthānām apalāyinām prakāśam abhavad rātrau kathaṃ kuruṣu saṃjaya

How then, there in the night, was there light for those unfleeing Parthas, and how for the Kurus, O Sanjaya?

  11. Verse 11

saṃjaya uvāca rātriyuddhe tadā rājan vartamāne sudāruṇe droṇam abhyadravan rātrau pāṇḍavāḥ sahasainikāḥ

Sanjaya said: While that most cruel night-battle was in progress, O king, the Pandavas with their soldiers rushed against Drona in the night.

  12. Verse 12

tato droṇaḥ kekayāṃś ca dhṛṣṭadyumnasya cātmajān preṣayan mṛtyulokāya sarvān iṣubhir āśugaiḥ

Then Drona, with swift arrows, sent the Kekayas and the sons of Dhrishtadyumna, all of them, to the world of Death.

  13. Verse 13

tasya pramukhato rājan ye 'vartanta mahārathāḥ tān sarvān preṣayām āsa paralokāya bhārata

Whatever mighty car-warriors, O king, turned to face him in front, all of them he sent to the other world, O Bharata.

  14. Verse 14

pramathnantaṃ tadā vīraṃ bhāradvājaṃ mahāratham abhyavartata saṃkruddhaḥ śibī rājan pratāpavān

As that hero, the son of Bharadvaja, the great car-warrior, was crushing [the foe], the valiant king Shibi, enraged, advanced against him, O king.

  15. Verse 15

tam āpatantaṃ saṃprekṣya pāṇḍavānāṃ mahāratham vivyādha daśabhir droṇaḥ sarvapāraśavaiḥ śaraiḥ

Beholding him rushing on, that mighty car-warrior of the Pandavas, Drona pierced him with ten arrows made wholly of iron.

  16. Verse 16

taṃ śibiḥ prativivyādha triṃśatā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ sārathiṃ cāsya bhallena smayamāno nyapātayat

Shibi pierced him in return with thirty keen shafts, and, smiling, felled his charioteer with a broad-headed arrow.

  17. Verse 17

tasya droṇo hayān hatvā sārathiṃ ca mahātmanaḥ athāsya saśirastrāṇaṃ śiraḥ kāyād apāharat

Drona, having slain the horses and the charioteer of that great-souled one, then bore off from his body his head together with its helmet.

  18. Verse 18

kaliṅgānāṃ ca sainyena kaliṅgasya suto raṇe pūrvaṃ pitṛvadhāt kruddho bhīmasenam upādravat

And with the host of the Kalingas, the son of the Kalinga king in battle, enraged at the former slaying of his father, rushed against Bhimasena.

  19. Verse 19

sa bhīmaṃ pañcabhir viddhvā punar vivyādha saptabhiḥ viśokaṃ tribhir ājaghne dhvajam ekena patriṇā

Having pierced Bhima with five arrows, he pierced him again with seven, struck Vishoka (Bhima's charioteer) with three, and the banner with a single winged shaft.

  20. Verse 20

kaliṅgānāṃ tu taṃ śūraṃ kruddhaṃ kruddho vṛkodaraḥ rathād ratham abhidrutya muṣṭinābhijaghāna ha

That enraged hero of the Kalingas, the enraged Vrikodara, rushing from car to car, struck with his fist.

  21. Verse 21

tasya muṣṭihatasyājau pāṇḍavena balīyasā sarvāṇy asthīni sahasā prāpatan vai pṛthak pṛthak

Of him, struck with the fist in battle by the stronger Pandava, all the bones suddenly fell asunder, one from another.

  22. Verse 22

taṃ karṇo bhrātaraś cāsya nāmṛṣyanta mahārathāḥ te bhīmasenaṃ nārācair jaghnur āśīviṣopamaiḥ

Karna and his brothers, those mighty car-warriors, could not brook this; they smote Bhimasena with iron shafts resembling venomous serpents.

  23. Verse 23

tataḥ śatrurathaṃ tyaktvā bhīmo dhruvarathaṃ gataḥ dhruvaṃ cāsyantam aniśaṃ muṣṭinā samapothayat sa tathā pāṇḍuputreṇa balinā nihato 'patat

Then, leaving the enemy's car, Bhima went to the car of Dhruva, and Dhruva, who was shooting ceaselessly, he crushed with his fist; thus struck by the strong son of Pandu, he fell.

  24. Verse 24

taṃ nihatya mahārāja bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ jayarātarathaṃ prāpya muhuḥ siṃha ivānadat

Having slain him, O great king, the mighty Bhimasena, reaching the car of Jayarata, roared again and again like a lion.

  25. Verse 25

jayarātam athākṣipya nadan savyena pāṇinā talena nāśayām āsa karṇasyaivāgrataḥ sthitam

Then, seizing Jayarata and roaring, with the palm of his left hand he destroyed him as he stood in front of Karna himself.

  26. Verse 26

karṇas tu pāṇḍave śaktiṃ kāñcanīṃ samavāsṛjat tatas tām eva jagrāha prahasan pāṇḍunandanaḥ

Karna then hurled a golden spear (shakti) at the Pandava; but the delight of Pandu, smiling, caught it.

  27. Verse 27

karṇāyaiva ca durdharṣaś cikṣepājau vṛkodaraḥ tām antarikṣe ciccheda śakunis tailapāyinā

And the unassailable Vrikodara flung it in battle at Karna himself; but Shakuni cut it in mid-air with a well-oiled shaft.

  28. Verse 28

tatas tava sutā rājan bhīmasya ratham āvrajan mahatā śaravarṣeṇa chādayanto vṛkodaram

Then thy sons, O king, came against Bhima's car, covering Vrikodara with a great shower of arrows.

  29. Verse 29

durmadasya tato bhīmaḥ prahasann iva saṃyuge sārathiṃ ca hayāṃś caiva śarair ninye yamakṣayam durmadas tu tato yānaṃ duṣkarṇasyāvapupluve

Then Bhima, as if smiling in the fray, sent the charioteer and the horses of Durmada to Yama's abode with his arrows; but Durmada leapt over onto the vehicle of Duhkarna.

  30. Verse 30

tāv ekaratham ārūḍhau bhrātarau paratāpanau saṃgrāmaśiraso madhye bhīmaṃ dvāv abhyadhāvatām yathāmbupatimitrau hi tārakaṃ daityasattamam

Those two brothers, scorchers of foes, mounted upon one car, in the midst of the battle-front, rushed both against Bhima, as the two friends of the lord of waters (Varuna) rushed against Taraka, that best of the Daityas.

  31. Verse 31

tatas tu durmadaś caiva duṣkarṇaś ca tavātmajau ratham ekaṃ samāruhya bhīmaṃ bāṇair avidhyatām

Then Durmada and Duhkarna, thy sons, mounting a single car, pierced Bhima with arrows.

  32. Verse 32

tataḥ karṇasya miṣato drauṇer duryodhanasya ca kṛpasya somadattasya bāhlīkasya ca pāṇḍavaḥ

Then, before the eyes of Karna, of Drona's son, of Duryodhana, of Kripa, of Somadatta and of Bahlika, the Pandava,

  33. Verse 33

durmadasya ca vīrasya duṣkarṇasya ca taṃ ratham pādaprahāreṇa dharāṃ prāveśayad ariṃdamaḥ

that subduer of foes, with the stamp of his foot, sent the car of the hero Durmada and of Duhkarna into the earth.

  34. Verse 34

tataḥ sutau te balinau śūrau duṣkarṇadurmadau muṣṭināhatya saṃkruddho mamarda caraṇena ca

Then thy two strong, heroic sons, Duhkarna and Durmada, enraged, he struck with his fist and crushed with his foot.

  35. Verse 35

tato hāhākṛte sainye dṛṣṭvā bhīmaṃ nṛpābruvan rudro 'yaṃ bhīmarūpeṇa dhārtarāṣṭreṣu gṛdhyati

Then, when the host cried out in dismay, beholding Bhima, the kings said: 'This is Rudra in Bhima's form, greedy for the sons of Dhritarashtra.'

  36. Verse 36

evam uktvāpalāyanta sarve bhārata pārthivāḥ visaṃjñāvāhayan vāhān na ca dvau saha dhāvataḥ

Having spoken thus, all the kings fled, O Bharata; senseless, they urged on their mounts, and not even two ran together.

  37. Verse 37

tato bale bhṛśalulite niśāmukhe; supūjito nṛpavṛṣabhair vṛkodaraḥ mahābalaḥ kamalavibuddhalocano; yudhiṣṭhiraṃ nṛpatim apūjayad balī

Then, when the host was sorely churned at nightfall, Vrikodara, honoured by the bulls among kings, the mighty one, his eyes like full-blown lotuses, that strong one honoured King Yudhishthira.

  38. Verse 38

tato yamau drupadavirāṭakekayā; yudhiṣṭhiraś cāpi parāṃ mudaṃ yayuḥ vṛkodaraṃ bhṛśam abhipūjayaṃś ca te; yathāndhake pratinihate haraṃ surāḥ

Then the twins, Drupada, Virata and the Kekayas, and Yudhishthira too, attained supreme joy, and greatly honoured Vrikodara, as the gods honoured Hara when Andhaka was slain.

  39. Verse 39

tataḥ sutās tava varuṇātmajopamā; ruṣānvitāḥ saha guruṇā mahātmanā vṛkodaraṃ sarathapadātikuñjarā; yuyutsavo bhṛśam abhiparyavārayan

Then thy sons, like the sons of Varuna, filled with wrath, together with the great-souled preceptor, with cars, foot-soldiers and elephants, eager to fight, sorely surrounded Vrikodara on every side.

  40. Verse 40
