Verse 1
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ahany ahani me dīptaṃ yaśaḥ patati saṃjaya hatā me bahavo yodhā manye kālasya paryayam
Dhritarashtra said: Day by day my bright glory falls away, O Sanjaya; many of my warriors are slain — I deem it the turning of Time.
Verse 2
dhanaṃjayas tu saṃkruddhaḥ praviṣṭo māmakaṃ balam rakṣitaṃ droṇakarṇābhyām apraveśyaṃ surair api
Dhananjaya, enraged, has entered my host, guarded by Drona and Karna, unenterable even by the gods,
Verse 3
tābhyām ūrjitavīryābhyām āpyāyitaparākramaḥ sahitaḥ kṛṣṇabhīmābhyāṃ śinīnām ṛṣabheṇa ca
his prowess nourished, united with those two of surpassing valour, Krishna and Bhima, and with the bull of the Shinis (Satyaki).
Verse 4
tadā prabhṛti mā śoko dahaty agnir ivāśayam grastān hi pratipaśyāmi bhūmipālān sasaindhavān
From that time grief burns my heart like fire; for I behold the guardians of the earth, together with the Saindhava, swallowed up by death.
Verse 5
apriyaṃ sumahat kṛtvā sindhurājaḥ kirīṭinaḥ cakṣurviṣayam āpannaḥ kathaṃ mucyeta jīvitaḥ
Having done a very great wrong to the Diademed one (Arjuna), the king of the Sindhus, come within range of his eye — how shall he escape with his life?
Verse 6
anumānāc ca paśyāmi nāsti saṃjaya saindhavaḥ yuddhaṃ tu tad yathā vṛttaṃ tan mamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ
By inference I see, O Sanjaya, that the Saindhava is no more; but tell me, as I ask, how that battle went on.
Verse 7
yac ca vikṣobhya mahatīṃ senāṃ saṃloḍya cāsakṛt ekaḥ praviṣṭaḥ saṃkruddho nalinīm iva kuñjaraḥ
And how, having shaken the great army and churned it up again and again, he alone, enraged, entered it, like an elephant entering a lotus-pond.
Verse 8
tasya vṛṣṇipravīrasya brūhi yuddhaṃ yathātatham dhanaṃjayārthe yat tasya kuśalo hy asi saṃjaya
Tell me, as it truly was, the battle of that hero of the Vrishnis (Satyaki), waged for Dhananjaya's sake; for you are skilled in narration, O Sanjaya.
Verse 9
saṃjaya uvāca tathā tu vaikartanapīḍitaṃ taṃ; bhīmaṃ prayāntaṃ puruṣapravīram samīkṣya rājan naravīramadhye; śinipravīro 'nuyayau rathena
Sanjaya said: As that foremost of men, Bhima, afflicted by Vaikartana (Karna), was withdrawing, beholding it, O king, amid the heroes of men, the hero of the Shinis (Satyaki) followed on his chariot.
Verse 10
nadan yathā vajradharas tapānte; jvalan yathā jaladānte ca sūryaḥ nighnann amitrān dhanuṣā dṛḍhena; saṃkampayaṃs tava putrasya senām
Roaring like the thunderbolt-bearer at the end of the hot season, blazing like the sun at the end of the rains, smiting the foes with his firm bow, and making your son's army tremble,
Verse 11
taṃ yāntam aśvai rajataprakāśair; āyodhane naravīraṃ carantam nāśaknuvan vārayituṃ tvadīyāḥ; sarve rathā bhārata mādhavāgryam
him, going with horses of silvery sheen, ranging over the battlefield — that hero of men, foremost of the Madhavas — all your car-warriors, O Bharata, could not check.
Verse 12
amarṣapūrṇas tv anivṛttayodhī; śarāsanī kāñcanavarmadhārī alambusaḥ sātyakiṃ mādhavāgryam; avārayad rājavaro 'bhipatya
But, full of indignation, a fighter who never turns back, wielding a bow, clad in golden armour, Alambusha, that best of kings, rushing forth, checked Satyaki, foremost of the Madhavas.
Verse 13
tayor abhūd bhārata saṃprahāras; tathāgato naiva babhūva kaś cit praikṣanta evāhavaśobhinau tau; yodhās tvadīyāś ca pare ca sarve
There arose between the two, O Bharata, such a clash as had never been; both your warriors and the others all gazed at those two, resplendent in battle.
Verse 14
avidhyad enaṃ daśabhiḥ pṛṣatkair; alambuso rājavaraḥ prasahya anāgatān eva tu tān pṛṣatkāṃś; ciccheda bāṇaiḥ śinipuṃgavo 'pi
Alambusha, that best of kings, forcibly pierced him with ten arrows; but the bull of the Shinis (Satyaki) cut those arrows with his own arrows ere they reached him.
Verse 15
punaḥ sa bāṇais tribhir agnikalpair; ākarṇapūrṇair niśitaiḥ supuṅkhaiḥ vivyādha dehāvaraṇaṃ vidārya; te sātyaker āviviśuḥ śarīram
Again, with three arrows like fire, keen, well-feathered, drawn to the ear, he pierced him; rending his body-armour, they entered Satyaki's body.
Verse 16
taiḥ kāyam asyāgnyanilaprabhāvair; vidārya bāṇair aparair jvaladbhiḥ ājaghnivāṃs tān rajataprakāśān; aśvāṃś caturbhiś caturaḥ prasahya
Rending his (Satyaki's) body with those arrows of the power of fire and wind, and with other blazing arrows, Alambusha forcibly struck those four silver-sheened horses with four shafts.
Verse 17
tathā tu tenābhihatas tarasvī; naptā śineś cakradharaprabhāvaḥ alambusasyottamavegavadbhir; hayāṃś caturbhir nijaghāna bāṇaiḥ
Thus struck by him, the swift grandson of Shini (Satyaki), of the power of the discus-bearer (Krishna), slew Alambusha's four horses with arrows of surpassing speed.
Verse 18
athāsya sūtasya śiro nikṛtya; bhallena kālānalasaṃnibhena sakuṇḍalaṃ pūrṇaśaśiprakāśaṃ; bhrājiṣṇu vaktraṃ nicakarta dehāt
Then, cutting off the head of his charioteer with a broad-headed arrow like the fire of doom, he severed from the body the shining face, with its earrings, bright as the full moon.
Verse 19
nihatya taṃ pārthivaputrapautraṃ; saṃkhye madhūnām ṛṣabhaḥ pramāthī tato 'nvayād arjunam eva vīraḥ; sainyāni rājaṃs tava saṃnivārya
Having slain that royal scion in battle, the bull of the Madhus (Satyaki), the crusher of foes, then, O king, followed Arjuna, holding back your armies.
Verse 20
anvāgataṃ vṛṣṇivaraṃ samīkṣya; tathārimadhye parivartamānam ghnantaṃ kurūṇām iṣubhir balāni; punaḥ punar vāyur ivābhrapūgān
Beholding the best of the Vrishnis (Satyaki) coming on, thus wheeling amid the foes, smiting the forces of the Kurus with arrows again and again, like the wind scattering masses of cloud —
Verse 21
tato 'vahan saindhavāḥ sādhu dāntā; gokṣīrakundenduhimaprakāśāḥ suvarṇajālāvatatāḥ sadaśvā; yato yataḥ kāmayate nṛsiṃhaḥ
then the well-tamed, good Sindhu-bred horses, bright as cow's milk, jasmine, the moon, and snow, spread over with nets of gold, those good steeds bore that lion among men whithersoever he desired.
Verse 22
athātmajās te sahitābhipetur; anye ca yodhās tvaritās tvadīyāḥ kṛtvā mukhaṃ bhārata yodhamukhyaṃ; duḥśāsanaṃ tvatsutam ājamīḍha
Then your sons rushed on together, and other warriors of yours, hastening, having made that chief of warriors, Duhshasana your son, their van, O Ajamidha.
Verse 23
te sarvataḥ saṃparivārya saṃkhye; śaineyam ājaghnur anīkasāhāḥ sa cāpi tān pravaraḥ sātvatānāṃ; nyavārayad bāṇajālena vīraḥ
They, surrounding him on all sides in battle, those bearers of hosts, struck the grandson of Shini (Satyaki); but that best of the Satvatas, the hero, warded them off with a net of arrows.
Verse 24
nivārya tāṃs tūrṇam amitraghātī; naptā śineḥ patribhir agnikalpaiḥ duḥśāsanasyāpi jaghāna vāhān; udyamya bāṇāsanam ājamīḍha
Having quickly warded them off, that slayer of foes, the grandson of Shini, with fire-like feathered arrows slew even Duhshasana's horses, raising his bow, O Ajamidha.
